Cincinnati Reds Mission Statement
THE RETURN OF KAHN’S REDSFEST The premier Reds event of the offseason returned this winter, as Kahn’s Redsfest 2006, presented by Great American Insurance Group lived up to its billing as a bigger and better event than ever before. The fan festival provided the perfect venue for the club to release its new uniforms to fans.
The eighth fan festival returned to the Duke Energy Center Dec. 1-2, 2006, after a two-year hiatus due to construction on the convention center. More than 18,000 fans attended the two-day event, which raised $167,000 for the Reds Community Fund.
“Redsfest was an enormous success,” said Reds President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Castellini. “Thank you to our fans for attending, and I am grateful to our sponsors and players for making this one of Major League Baseball’s most extravagant celebrations. Redsfest entertained fans of every age and magnified the power of the Reds’ tradition.”
BIGGER AND BETTER While the event stayed true to its roots as an opportunity for fans to mingle with players for autographs and pictures and gather Reds memorabilia, the club made sure this Redsfest would be more memorable than ever before.
One of the major highlights was a Friday night concert headlined by Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo that also featured Screaming Mimes, Freekbass, psychodots and Noah Hunt and The All Stars. Each band played songs from the “Cincinnati Clutch Hits” CD. Saturday night, Arroyo performed an acoustic concert to close out the weekend’s festivities.
Aside from the main stage jams, Kahn’s Redsfest 2006 also featured a number of new exhibits, including the Pepsi MLB Tour Vehicle, the Rawlings “Making of the Game” Display, the New Era Minor League Baseball Hat Wall and a number of historic displays in the expanded Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum area.
A NEW LOOK The action-packed weekend kicked off on Friday, Dec. 1 with a fashion show to unveil the Reds’ new uniforms, complete with a full-size stage and catwalk. Infielder Brandon Phillips, outfielder Chris Denorfia and relief pitcher Todd Coffey debuted the new threads, while Macy’s modeled other Reds gear and winter fashions.
In an effort to honor the tradition of the franchise and create a new look for the future at the same time, the Reds did away with the sleeveless vests and pinstripes
and brought back all red home caps and a Mr. Redlegs patch to honor the popular icon of the 1950s and ’60s. Uniform numbers and lettering appears in an old-fashioned “Redlegs” font, which was designed exclusively for the Reds by Major League Baseball.
The new home uniform is white with red trim, red piping and the Mr. Redlegs patch on the left sleeve, while the alternate home uniform remains all-red but now features white trim and piping along with the Mr. Redlegs patch. The road uniform is the traditional gray with “CINCINNATI” arched across the front with the new font and red replacing black as the primary accent.
FOR THE COMMUNITY While Redsfest certainly served its purpose as a fun weekend for fans, the event was even more special because proceeds benefited the Reds Community Fund and its community-involvement efforts.
“Redsfest helped generate the type of exposure and financial support we’ve never experienced previously,” said Charley Frank, the Community Fund’s executive director. “It was exciting for the Community Fund to be featured so prominently throughout the event and to see many of our kids, coaches, volunteers and partners participating in different ways.”
One of the main reasons the Community Fund had a strong presence at Redsfest was the Buddy’s Carpet Field of Dreams, a miniature indoor baseball field that held a Wiffle Ball tournament, celebrity home-run contest and baseball clinics throughout the event. The Community Fund also took center stage on Saturday night with the first ever Reds Community Fund Celebrity Poker Tournament, a Texas Hold ‘em event that allowed fans to play alongside current and former Reds players, coaches and local celebrities.
Kahn’s Redsfest 2007 is scheduled for Dec. 7 and 8 at the Duke Energy Center.
