  • 8 5. DORMITORY

General Normally, all our students are placed in a double room in the dormitory called Hafnerriegel. If there is no room during a term, it is possible that you get a room in a flat share. The costs of the room are paid by the AMSA. The rooms are equipped with a bed, a desk and a wardrobe. The students live together in units, which are like small flat shares. Either 6 (in double rooms) or 5 people (in single rooms) share a unit, which also means sharing a kitchen and a bathroom. Address:

    Hafnerriegel 53 A-8010 Graz

What to take with you It is important to bring your own bedclothes. Some kitchens are equipped with dishes and kitchenware, but in some units there is nothing like that. So take no risks and bring your own stuff with you, if you dont want to eat at the hospital. Washing You can wash your clothes in the dormitory. Therefore you have to buy chips for 0,5. If you want to wash your clothes you need a fixed date. You can write your name on lists, which are pinned on the washing machines. For a wash under 60 you need one chip, over 60 you need two. Link For more information you can visit the homepage of the dormitory: http://www.hr.vc-graz.ac.at/index.php?newlang=english. Division We dont do the division of the rooms, because this is the business of the manager of the dormitory (Alexander Walter). If you like to share a room with a certain person, please tell them at your arrival.

  • 9 Arrival Its important to tell us your arrival details ([email protected]), so we can organize someone to give you the key for your room and an introduction to you stay in Graz. You will get an email about the check-in information. Notice Board There is a notice board in the entrance hall where all the important information for AMSA-students is published. Please check it every day! You can also find information about the social program on the notice board, as well as a list of all AMSA-students (incl. room- and interior phone number). Phone calls The dormitory has a free interior phone, which you can use to call other units. You cant call out, but people from outside can reach you in the dormitory under this number: +43 (0)316-8046-XX (the last two numbers are different for each unit! You can find a list with the phone extensions in the entrance hall). Key Please do not lose your key. It is expensive to reproduce it. Internet You can use computers in the computer room (D1). Or you can bring your PC and LAN wire for Internet in your room. CAF The dormitory has a party room which is called "CAF". Regularly, there are parties which are always announced in the entrance hall. There is also a party room which can be rented. If you want to do that, please contact

    the spokesperson of the dormitory.

They serve typical Austrian cuisine; the dishes (e.g. Wiener Schnitzel) are big and cheap! Posaune Zinzendorfgasse 34, 8010 Graz It is also located near the university and it is famous for its pizza, salads and toasts. • 21 12. NIGHTLIFE

THE WAY TO GO OUT IN GRAZ... Most of the good places to go out are focused around the university and the bermuda triangle (next to Hauptplatz, going uphill). There you can find plenty of pubs and bars, good and cheap restaurants where people usually start to go out between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Around midnight most of the people are in the Kultus or Three Monkeys. For a small town, Graz has a good night-life, although, you will not find typical discos. Still, there are a lot of opportunities to have some nice evenings out with friends or to make party all night long. You can be sure to meet a lot of people! Pubs, bars or restaurants are open every night, but most of the people only go out between (Tuesday) Wednesday and Saturday. THE UNIVERSITY-DISTRICT

Kultus (Kulturhauskeller): Elisabethstrae 30 The place where you can get lost every night...! Even when the town seams empty, you will always find people in the Kultus! The entry is 3, but before 11:00 p.m. it is free. The drinks are a little bit expensive, so it is better to go to a pub before. The pizza is recommendable (there is a pizza happy-hour). There is live-music every Tuesday and on Wednesdays you can try to sing Karaoke! Sometimes people stay here until morning, but when you want to go somewhere else, the Three Monkeys is across the road!

Three Monkeys: Elisabethstrae 31 Its a little bit smaller than the Kultus but just as busy. People stay here until morning! The entrance is 3 and most of the people go there after midnight. Here too, there is a live-band on Tuesdays and on Wednesdays you can sing Karaoke!

Orange: Elisabethstrae 30 A bar, literally above the Kultus! You dont have to pay to get in. People usually go there for an early drink. If you have been out all night, you can go there for breakfast!

Merano: Elisabethstrae 37 Its a nice bar on the corner Elisabethstrae Merangasse and the best of it:

They serve hamburgers, Schnitzel-burgers or fries until morning! It is just normal fast food, but Im sure youll use it!

  • 22 Pharmacy:Leonhardstrae 35, see http://www.pharmacy-bar.com/

Its a nice cocktail bar, where you can chill and order a lot of different cocktails: If there is something not on the menu just speak to the barkeeper, they probably mix it!

    Posaune: Zinzendorfgasse 34

It is at the roundabout next to the university. Maybe one of the best and cheapest restaurants/pubs in Graz! It is crowded from noon until long after midnight. Sometimes it can be hard to get a seat (you can book a table: 0316 / 327073). The beer is very cheap (2,70) and it is famous for its pizza (see restaurants). It often is the starting-point when you go out.

Glockenspielplatz Around here, you can find plenty of different pubs, bars and restaurants! It is a good area to have a comfortable night out! The difference to the university-district is that older people go out in this area as well, not only students. There are no bigger bars or clubs around here.

Nachtexpress: Frberplatz 1, (next to Glockenspielplatz)

Its a Rockbar, where old and new Rockmusic is played. One cool feature is that the play most of the songs on a videowall. Its a little bit tricky to find so just ask somebody if you are around there.

Postgarage: Dreihackengasse 42 (next to Griesplatz), see www.postgarage.at

for a program. A big place where a lot of concerts take place. Many different types of music, so you should really check the program.

    Dom im Berg: inside Schloberg

Inside the Schloberg, there is a big cave, a unique place to make party! It is a kind of club; the entry can be quite expensive (about 10 or more). A lot of concerts take place here. Especially the periodical Club 2 is recommendable!

Parkhaus: in the middle of the Stadtpark (municipal park) If the weather is nice, it is the perfect place to go out at night! You can sit outside, have a couple of drinks and they play really good jazz sometimes! If you want to save some money, you can bring your own wine or beer, sit on one of the benches and listen to the music! Many people do that, because it is a wonderful place to relax!

ppc: Neubaugasse 6, http://popculture.at They have there different concerts. Check out the homepage for the program and go there for your favourite music.

  • 23
