This Summer Is Awards Summer

As the midpoint of this very strange year has finally been crest-

ed, the Grassmarket Community Picture House is really pleased

to be bringing you the very best films of the awards season. We

have Oscar winners in the shape of Nomadland, Minari, Sound

of Metal and Another Round.

After the success of last season’s ‘Bad Trip’ programme, Ewan

McCorry is bringing us a small selection of noir-tinged films, that

kicks off with Edward Norton’s labour-of-love Motherless Brook-

lyn. Be sure to also look out for Ida Lupino’s noir melodrama

The Bigamist and Carl Reiner’s wonderful spoof of the genre

Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, featuring Steve Martin.

We have chosen to temporarily suspend the online film chats for

the summer, but please feel free to come and chat with us after

screenings about what you’ve like and not liked over the sea-

son.

Judas and the Black Messiah (2021)

Dir: Shaka King

15, US, Drama/Biopic, 126mins

Wednesday 7th July, 7:30pm

Kicking off our new 'awards' season of summer screenings is this

entrancing biopic of Fred Hampton (an Oscar-winning performance

from Daniel Kaluuya) and William O'Neal (Lakeith Stanfield). Hamp-

ton was the 'Chairman' of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther

party and was an articulate and vocal opponent of the systemic ra-

cial oppression within 1960s America. O'Neal was a malleable teen-

age petty criminal, who is manipulated into infiltrating the organisa-

tion by the FBI.

NOTE: Features strong and frequently racist language throughout.

Contains scenes of police, activist and racial violence.

Nomadland (2020)

Dir: Chloe Zhao

12A, US, Drama, 107mins

Wednesday 14thJuly, 7:30pm

Chloe Zhao’s awards favourite comes to the Grassmarket. Frances McDormand won her third oscar for her performance as Fern, a woman that following the death of her husband and losing her job, buys a van to live in as she pursues more work, rather than stay in an economically devastated town she is no longer attached to. Whilst working precariously around the southwest, Fern finds com-munity amongst other ‘nomads’ who live in their vans as she adapts to her new way of life, finding fulfilment along the way.

NOTE: Features some bad language, brief nudity and references to suicide and drug use.

Motherless Brooklyn (2019)

Dir: Edward Norton

15, US, Drama / Crime 138mins

Wednesday 21st July, 7:30pm,

Film Noir Season

Edward Norton’s turn as writer/director/star in this liberal adaptation

of Jonathan Lethem’s novel proves that noir is not dead. Set in 1957

the film follows Lionel Essrog (Norton), a private detective with Tou-

rettes and OCD, as he tries to solve the murder of his mentor (Bruce

Willis). As he gets closer to the truth Lionel uncovers a complex

conspiracy of power and corruption that threatens the marginalised

and poor neighbourhoods of New York.

NOTE: Violence and strong language throughout. Drug use.

Sound of Metal (2019)

Dir: Darius Marder

15, US, Drama, 115mins

Monday 26th July, 6:00pm

Due to popular demand from our regular audience members we have put together this special Monday screening of another award-winning film from last year. Riz Ahmed gives an extraordinary per-formance as Ruben, a drummer with the heavy metal act Blackgam-mon. Ruben’s life is sent off kilter when he finds he is beginning to lose his hearing. How can he continue to be a successful rock drummer when his hearing is in such a precarious state? Marder’s directorial debut, having previously written The Place Beyond the Pines, is an intense study in addiction, performance, and living with disability.

NOTE: Features strong language and sexual references.

Minari (2020)

Dir: Lee Isaac Chung

12, US, Drama, 115mins

Wednesday 28th July, 7:30pm

Lee Isaac Chung’s semi-

autobiographical feature is a touching meditation on the immigrant experi-

ence. Davids life is changed when he and his family move from California

to rural Arkansas to become farmers specialising in Korean produce. As

the family struggle to work the land and get the right conditions for their

crops, they must also navigate their immigrant idenitity in the local parochi-

al community. David’s identity also challenged when his grandmother

comes to stay, whose Korean presence clashes with his American percep-

tion of what a grandmother should be. Steven Yuen is brilliant in his role as

an immigrant father trying his best to provide for his family, but it’s Youn

Yuh-jung, who won the oscar for her role as Soon-ja, and Alan Kim that

together make this a film that will both warm and break your heart. NOTE:

Suicide references

Bigamist, The (1953)

Dir: Ida Lupino

PG, US, Thriller, 80mins

Wednesday 4th August, 7:30pm

As part of our Classic Hollywood and Film Noir seasons we

are giving a rare screen outing to Ida Lupino’s impressive

thriller about an adoption process that reveals rather more

about a marriage than a couple were expecting. Joan Fontaine

is Eve a woman who wants a family, but is infertile. Harry

(Edmond O’Brien) is her loving husband, with something to

hide. This gripping drama has the added frisson of Lupino di-

recting Fontaine, who was married to the producer Collier

Young, Lupino’s ex-husband.

Emma (2020)

Dir: Philippa Lowthorpe

U, UK, Comedy / Drama

124mins

Wednesday 11th

August, 7:30pm

A sparklingly witty updating of the Jane Austen classic about a med-

dlesome society girl who wishes to be matchmaker. Autumn de

Wilde’s sumptuously shot film is a perfect vehicle for up-and-coming

screen talents Anya Taylor-Joy, Jonny Flynnand Mia Goth. Staying

faithful to the period setting and the general thrust of Austen’s novel,

this version of Emma does manage to more strongly embrace the

humour of the source material. De Wilde is ably abetted by some

fine cameos from the very best in British comic acting, including Bill

Nighy and Miranda Hart.

Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid

(1982)

Dir: Carl Reiner

12, US, Comedy, 88mins

Wednesday 18h August,

7:30pm, Film Noir Season

Concluding our film noir series this week with the late great Carl Reiner’s loving parody of the genre. Rigby Reardon (Steve Martin) is a hard-boiled detective hired by the daughter of a noted scientist to investigate his death. With the help of his elusive mentor Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart), Reardon tries to solve the case whilst encoun-tering a varied cast of characters, some that might look familiar due to a fantastic bit of editing, creating a collage of classic noir actors for Reardon to interact with. Coupled with a hilarious script, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid is a brilliant piece of filmmaking, they just don’t make them like this anymore.

Another Round (2020)

Dir: Thomas Vinterberg

12A, Dan / Swe / Ned, Comedy,

117mins

Monday 25th August, 7:30pm

Thomas Vinterberg returns to form

with this provocative black comedy about a quartet of male high

school teachers who ‘experiment’ with alcoholism to see what im-

pact it has on their work and personal lives. The cast is headed up

by the always watchable Mads Mikkelsen and walked away with

wins at the Oscars, Baftas and European Film Awards. With Subti-

tles.

NOTE: Features strong language, sexual scenes and scenes of

substance abuse.
