This image (left) I created uses standard type, with a symmetrical composition and a triad relationship colour. The word ‘defeat’ was the fi rst word that came into my head at the time when thinking about what to write. However after experimenting with the and type, the horizontal line which lays directly in the middle of the words act as part of each letter. I thought this looked very effective. The black and white image below was the fi rst experimental image I created and then I experimented with it further and created the fi nal outcome, which uses a symmetrical composition and triad colour relationship, interpreting primary colours.

This image was taken from the Pepsi Cola logo. It’s classed as a vernacular type piece using the rule of thirds. I’ve also used a split complementary colour relationship within this image. I went around creating this by us-ing the pen tool, which is a more precise way of cutting around shapes and letters, rather than using the magic wand or polyg-onal lasso tool in Photoshop, then fi lling the space in after-wards.

Analogus Relationshipcolour pallette

The image I created uses a analogus relationship colour, the composition is the rule of odds and fi nally uses an ab-stract type. The images I photo-graphed were taken around the university, from fancy railings to signs and posters. I decided to take a selected three photos into Photoshop and use tools such as the pen tool, select tool and magic want tool to create the letters I wanted to use. Then, in a new page, I gathered all the letteres together and applied the analogus colours on them.

The first image shown above is an image I found on google which I was using to experiment with for my first practice in 3D Studio Max. I particularly chose this image because I wanted to place a word on the floor and give it a shadow from the light behind.

The second image i collected of instruments from a band implements the word ‘Music’. I thought music was a great word to use with this image because from the instru-ments you automatically think of music, also this is how music is generated. I added a bevel and adjust-ed sections level 2 and 3 to create the 3D look. I also added a shadow from the light affect in the background so the word looks more realistic and not floating in mid air.

Michael Jackson - The Earh Song

What about sunrise,What about rain,What about all the things,That you said were to gain,What about killing fi elds,Is there a time,What about all the things, That you said was yours and mine,Did you ever stop to notice,All the blood we’ve shed before,Did you ever stop to notice,The crying earth,The weeping shores.

Sketch Book Story Boarding

My stop motion video was based around a seed emerging into a flower with rain continu-ously falling from the clouds. I came up with this idea because I was inspired by the nature around me. I chose to incorpo-rate different colours into the video to make it more colourful and eye catching.

17th Century Painting

One of the following 3 items to choose from1) What’s shown (wealth/power)/what’s hidden (exploitation/consequences).2) Present monotony/future dreams.3) Increase in envy/increase in democracy.

I have chosen to use the fi rst option for the development of my animation which is ‘What’s shown (wealth/power)/what’s hidden (exploitation/consequences)’.First of all, the image shows a man being smothered by two women. To empha-size the power the man has, I have animated the women to be very touchy feely on him, such as rubbing his leg. This is giving him the attention he needs and declared. This shows that the man is getting the women to do what he wants to them to do. Also, when the man rubs the woman’s back that is knelt on the fl oor, it seems as if it’s a patronising rub. This shows his power and domination. I also added additional animated sequences such as the vase falling, which is caused by the fruits falling and the fl ying butterfl y, which hovers around. This is just extra footage I incorporated.

Narrative AnalysisFelix Finds Out: 1924

In Felix Finds Out 1924, in the first scene we are led to believe that Felix is trying to persuade the kid to leave school. Howev-er, we are expected to think that the child wont leave but is easily distracted when Felix finds a shiny coin on the floor which catches the little boys attention and then the boys mind is led to go and buy something with the coin.

In the next scene, it has been revealed that Felix and the little boy have missed school by ac-cident, with distraction from this found coin. After missing school, they are both drifted towards the thought of buying a hotdog.

Just over a minute into the animation, we are led to expect that the hotdog is going to be eaten by Felix, because he was the one with the idea of buying it and he purchased it. However, what actually happens is that there is rival over which one of the two characters gets the hot-dog. A firm discussion is going to be made.

We are led to expect that the hotdog would be eaten, how-ever out of the blue the hotdog comes alive, with hands, feet and eyes and runs back to the hotdog stand.

A minute and a half in, after the conflict, Felix flips a coin to make a fair decision on who gets to eat the hotdog. We are lead to expect the coin will either fall on ‘heads’ or ‘tails’, however, ironically it falls on its side and the food is divided between the two of them. This situation is hard to believe be-cause its never an occurrence when a coin lands on its side, however it is a fictional anima-tion.

Three and a half minutes in, the school bell rings. We expect Felix and the boy to go back to school, however the little boy doesn’t know his time table times and strolls into class late when the viewer expected him to not go. However, when the teacher spots him, he gets told off and is being forces to do mathematical sums. Out of the blue, Felix comes to the rescue when the little boy needs help with the sums.

Severn minutes into the anima-tion and Felix goes to speak to the moon. We expect the moon to be nice and gentle but, when Felix gets to speak to the moon, the moon gets very cheeky which surprisingly annoys Felix. The moon goes back up into the sky.

Towards the eighth minute after Felix was annoyed at the moon, he goes for a walk and leans on a tree. Unexpectedly, the tree comes alive, gets up and walks away leaving poor Felix puz-zled, then he starts following the tree. You would have thought he would have gone home and called it a day but no, he carried on. At the end, little do we know, the tree reveals itself to be a person.

This wallpaper is used with two colours, which are grey and white. The reason why it appears that there are different shades of grey is because I changed the affect to mul-tiply which gives the stamp a slight opacity. This wallpaper also uses a regular rhythm and is poly-rhythmic.

This wallpaper was designed for an android phone. It was designed using a colour palette of my choice. I made this wall-paper using the tools in Pho-toshop. The pen tool allowed me to create the swirled lines, and then I added an outer glow to the lines. I then copies and pasted each line and changed the colour of them to give a rain-bow effect. I added some solid shaped circles into the pattern just to give it a slight edge of attitude. This wallpaper uses a fl owing and mono-rhythmic rhythm.

MONO-RHYTHMIC : One rhythm through-out a piece

POLY-RHYTHMIC : A simultaneous combination of contrasting rhythms.

This wallpaper has a progres-sive rhythm fl ow to it. This pattern was created uses the rectangular shaped tool in Photoshop. After the shape was created, I rotated it on an angles which aloud me to cre-ate the tilting affect. I then simply copied and pasted each rectangle and changed the colours and sizes of each rectangle. After this, I lined al the rectangles up and merged them all together which gave me one shape. After my shape was created I simply copy and pasted the shape and changed the sizes which created my overall wallpa-per.

Wallpaper in use

This wallpaper I created from my own choice. The wallpaper was an experiment I decided to do with the brush tool on Photoshop. By choosing a circular brush and changing the size and opacity on it aloud me to created the blend-ing effect between the two co-lours. This could be done with any colour, however, I decided to use these specific colours because it reminded me of a sun and how the yellow and orange blend to-gether creating a summer theme to it. Even though this design is very simple, I think it’s rather effective and can be used as a desktop wallpaper.

- DONT NEGLECT, PROTECT!- DONT INJECT, PROTECT!- DONT NEGLECT, MAKE AN AFFECT!- QUIT INJECTING, START PROTECTING!

CHOSEN SLOGAN: DONT INJECT, PROTECT!

I chose to base my placard design around animal testing and animal cruelty. This is something I feel very strongly about and is very wrong. Thousands of animals die every year due to animal testing, being injected with substances which have a high percentage of chemicals in, poisonous and potentially life threatening. If these substances which are being inject-ed and tested on animals are not even suitable to be tested on humans, which gives the people rights to test them on animals? Animals have the same feelings as humans, but they just don’t have a say. In my opinion, I think this is disgusting and should be banned!

PresentationDo people respond to work differently at different times of the day?

28 29

Page 29: Graphic Design: New Media (UCA) year 1. Final Briefs

I am relating the question to one of my pieces of work I made on week fives brief. This was to do with stimulating and manipulat-ing imagination. Further into the brief, we were asked to think of 20 questions you can ask some-one after showing them the cre-ated images. The image I have chosen to focus on is called ‘Captured’. For my findings, I videoed everyones answers which was my research meth-od. In my opinion, by videoing their responses, I find that it’s more accurate in comparison to writing them down. In my opin-ion, by videoing its a lot more accurate further more, you will gain more information because people will freely talk, however when writing, people can be lazy or not elaborate as much as as they wish to.

Looking at the un-edited videos from each person that answered the questions, its clear that you can tell which ones are ‘slack-ing’ in answering the questions and which people are thorough and maintaining a steady flow.

Ayden: Ayden answered the questions at 1am with a video timing of 24 minutes. It took a lot of work trying to get him to answer the questions, by hav-ing to repeat them almost every time was quite tiring. Also, he was not alert, kept getting distracted and talking about other subjects.

Becci & Hollie: Becci was vid-eoed around lunch time with a

Image 1: Captured

video timing of 13 minutes. Hollie was videoed straight after Becci with a video time of 15 minutes. Both of the girls had much more of a positive attitude towards answering the ques-tions, were alert and focused and their responses made more sense in comparison to Ayden.

The watershed runs from 9pm until 5.30am. The purpose of the watershed is used to pre-vent children from identifying unsuitable programs which are being broadcasted. This also affects when certain types of adverts can be aired. For ex-ample, advertising alcohol isn’t appropriate to broadcast in the outside hours of the watershed. Drug use, nudity, strong lan-guage and gambling are also other examples of this.

A strong issue was aired in 2010 on Watch Dog about ‘Advertising of condoms before 9pm could help reduce teen pregnancy’. The advert was of a girl holding different variety of condoms. To back up my question of ‘Do people respond to work differently at different times of the day’, I carried out a

check box survey, where by people tick the answer which mostly relates to them. I asked 5 people the following questions in the morning, then I asked an-other 5 people the same ques-tions but in the evening.

Findings showed that the peo-ple who responded in the day time have much more of a neg-ative look about the ad being broadcasted outside the water-shed hours, however the people who responded in the evening have a slightly more positive outlook.

Research Issue: 3

Thirdly, my next piece of design that I’ve chosen to research in relation to the question i’ve chose are two Lynx adverts. Im doing a test of memory on two people. I will show them an image in the morning and a different, but similar image in the night time before they go to sleep. They will each analyze the image for 10 seconds. I will ask them questions about the advert, such as “what colour bikini was the woman wear-ing?”. The reason for this is to see whether peoples memory are stronger in the morning or night time. This will also deter-mine advertising on television, what time of day would be most affective to broadcast adverts.

Results showed that the ques-tions answered in the morning time around (10-11am), were more precise whereas, the questions which were answered in the night time before the two people were about to go to sleep (11pm-12am) were less accu-rate. I also found out that when asking questions in the night time one person in particular was more hesitant to answer. Although this research method isn’t thorough, it still shows that people are likely to remember more when they’re more awake, than before bed when they’re sleepy.

Research Issue: 4

I have chosen to work along side a well known company called Playmobile which adver-tise Children’s Zoo lego. I am focusing on a younger audi-ence, age ranging around 6 to 8 year olds. The reason why i’ve chosen to base it around a game advert for children is because there are certain times of the day where the amount of children increase and decrease watching television. This is a bit like the Prime times of children television, where by what hours of the day are people likely to watch the most television. This can affect how certain people respond to particular adverts which are broadcasted at cer-tain times.

First of all for Children’s Zoo, for it to be noticed by as many chil-dren as possible, it would have to be broadcasted in prime time

hours which are most suitable for children. In this case the Children’s Zoo advert will be broadcasted around the hours before school which are 7-8am and hours after school which are likely to be around 3-5pm for children to react to it. Also, timing is very important such as advertising placement. Placing an advert before or after a well known television program such as the XFactor, any other big shows or in prime times can cost a lot more money, however a higher percentage of people will be tuned in, so it pays of. However if the ad was shown in the night time where the major-ity of children would be in bed or sleepy, then it wouldn’t be as affective to draw kids into buy-ing the product because they won’t see the as much of the ad and wont be a memorable if they just see it once or twice in a week.

In conclusion, if you were to advertise a kids toy, it will have more recognition if it was ad-vertised in the day and hours before and after school, where the majority of kids would be awake and alert enough to see it. This will benefit the company and sale possible increase.

Conclusion

Overall, drawn from the re-search I have carried out, it shows that in response to the question ‘do people respond differently to work at different times of the day’, that people do respond differently. I found out that people are more interactive and remember more when its the day time also, stick to the fact that adult theme adverts should be kept to the set wa-tershed times. However, in the night time most people seem to lack in the ability to focus as much, however they are still aware.
