Cubism

A Brief History of Cubism

Pioneered by Pablo Picasso (Spain, 18811973) and Georges Braque (France, 18821963) in Paris between the years 1907 and 1914

Cubist painters rejected the aesthetic notion, championed by Plato, that art is a form of imitation and inherently follows nature.

They rebelled against traditional rules of perspective and form by adopting a geometric style of painting using cubic shapes, hence the name.

Cubist painters tended not to paint landscapes, preferring to paint still life and human faces. This movement gave courage and set the pace for Dada and Surrealism, movements which soon followed.

Influence of Cubism on modern design trends Cubisms tendency to simplify the appearance of objects has kept it relevant today, in a design world whose motto

is less equals more. Cubisms influence is particularly evident in modern logo design

Futurism

A Brief History of Futurism

Futurists took the agenda of the Cubist movement to the next level. In a book entitled the Manifesto of the Futurist Painters, five artists of the movement identified one of their main aims as being to invalidate all kinds of imitation.

Futurists were preoccupied with the notion that typography could be a valid visual form of expression. They entertained this idea trough their art, which featured a lot of concrete poetry, and emboldened words. Their art works also expressed a lot of motion.

Futurisms most notable artists include Umberto Boccioni (18821916), Carlo Carr (18811966) and Luigi Russolo (18851947).

Futurism has a very masculine and jarring persona as an art form.

Influence of Futurism on modern design trends The Futurist movement helped validate typography as an art form. Typography is used widely in graphic design

today for both its communicative efficacy and visual appeal.

Dada

A Brief History of Dada

The Dada movement was active between the years 1916 and 1924 mainly in Switzerland, Germany, France and The USA.

It is said to be the product of both disillusionment with modernity and the embracement of it. The style challenges traditional conceptions of the nature of art by using unorthodox materials and methods to

produce often confronting pieces. Marcel Duchamp was a pioneer of Dada and perhaps the most well-known artist of the movement. He is

renowned for his provocative so called ready-made art works, usually common, every-day objects, which he used to challenge traditional ideas about art by placing them in a context that suggested they were art. His artworks seemingly posed the question: Is this not art?

Influence of Dada art on modern design trends Dada broadened the scope of art and gave more credibility to art forms that strayed from the traditional canvas

format. The current preference for design that is edgy is likely to have derived its courage from the Dada movement.

The idea was to merge the art styles of surrealism and hyperrealism to create an advertisement for Playdoh that would feature in an alternative music magazine. I decided to make an ad that showed a young boy rocking out on a drum set made put of Playdoh. In the background is his father asleep, a feat that would not have been possible were the drum set not made out of Playdoh. The notion of making music with Playdoh is almost surreal in itself, while the fact that the drum set in the ad is actually constructed from Playdoh is tribute to the hyperrealism art movement.

Thumbnails and Rational

The idea was to redesign the album cover of The Cures Bloodflowers drawing inspiration from the international typographic style or Swiss style of design. This style is bold and clean, lacking in any intricate patterns and designs. Block colours are used frequently in this style. The Cure is an alternative pop-rock band that rose to fame in the 80s. They peaked in popularity in the 90s and have not been very active this century. They have a faithful following that would identify with dark and grungy imagery. I thought it would be interesting to use Swiss Style in redesigning an album cover for The Cure because of the contrast.
