An article last month which was featured in Th e Grape-vine magazine regarding the church bells at St Helens Church and other Churches up and down the country to ring out at various times to commemorate WW1, was courtesy of the Incite Community Magazine -St Helens Church. Many thanks to them.I personally have a keen interest in history and WW1, two anscestors of mine have their names on the War Memorial in Ilkeston market place, both were brothers and died within one year of each other, one was only 18 years of age, and also their father died at home in Ilkeston just aft er his fi rst son got killed, I cannot imagine the pain and horror that family went through losing three members, (and of course families are still losing their loved ones through war). I recently found old fi lms and documentaries whilst surfi ng the internet on the British Pathe website, a fantastic website showing footage of not only WW1 but WW2, and lots of local history events, old football games in Nottingham, old boxing events, and so on, too many to mention, (over 90,000!) but amazing! have a look - www.britishpathe.com.Until next time

About the talk The dolphin experience is a slide illustrated talk which follows the essence of the speaker's adventures interacting with dolphins in various locations around the world. From the freedom of swimming with these extraordinary creatures in the wild where there is choice exhibited on both sides, to the more defined and often choreographed interaction in captivity, all are referred to with a wealth of personal anecdotes. INDOOR MEETINGS PROGRAMME 2014-2015 Trent Vale Infants School, Trent Road, Beeston Rylands, Nottinghamshire, NG9 1LP.TIME: 7.30 - 9.30pm. ADMISSION : £2.00 Adults, £1.00 Children - includes refreshments

Sept 15th 2014 DOLPHINS Robert Alan-HavenAnyone who has had an encounter with dolphins will know how exhilarating it can be. Th eir seeming joy of living somehow transfuses through us, lift ing our spirits. Robert has swum with dolphins and researched their behaviour for many years and delights in telling of his experiences.

Oct 20th 2014 GOLDEN EAGLE FUTURES Dr Alan FieldingTh e majesty of a soaring Golden Eagle makes it a sought aft er bird to see. Unfortunately, they are still persecuted by some landowners. Alan advises the British and Irish governments on how to protect these birds and tells us about their lifestyles and how it’s not just humans who upset them!

Nov 17th 2014 IN PRAISE OF TREES Dr Patrick HardingPatrick explains which of our trees are native and how diff erent timber has been used for making all manner of objects. Some trees are steeped in superstition, some grow where worshippers gather. We’ll learn how to identify and manage them and why most living things depend on them.

Dec 15th 2014 BIRD MISIDENTIFICATION Dr Tim MellingTim works for the RSPB and frequently gets requests to identify mystery birds. Some of the descriptions and situations are truly hilarious. Th is talk will send you away with a smile. You will never think you are poor bird watcher aft er this evening! Mince pies as usual - as it is Christmas.

Jan 19th 2015 DERBYSHIRE MAMMALS Debbie AlstonTh ere are some surprising mammal species in our adjoining county and Debbie is an authority on them and co-author of a book on the subject. We’ll look at the distribution and status of animals as diverse as mice to deer and wallabies to wild boar. Might some cross the border and visit us?

Feb 23rd 2015 ETHIOPIA Paul BinghamSadly this East African country is remembered for the famine in 1984. It is a beautiful country with lakes, mountains and its own Rift Valley. Civilisation is believed to have started here. Ethiopia teems with history and wildlife, with hundreds of diff erent species of birds, reptiles and mammals.

March 16th 2015 THE SHETLAND ISLES David TollidayBritain’s most northerly islands are rich with wildlife; we’ll see birds, insects, mammals and plants. Th e islands are remote and rugged; anything living up here needs to be tough. David’s superb photography captures the real ‘feel’ of the place, we will also enjoy some evocative sounds.

April 20th 2015 GIVING BIRDS A HELPING HAND Dr David ParkinDavid returns to tell us of even more species that have become near-extinct, but due to remarkable eff orts of dedicated enthusiasts and scientists, they have returned from the brink. Fascinating stories of chance fi ndings, good and bad luck and human intervention are expertly woven.Th is meeting includes our brief AGM and is dedicated to our founder Keith Corbett.

Ruth is encouraging families and individuals from Nottinghamshire to step out for a few hours and raise money to help support people with dementia and their carers. Walkers will be entertained by the Boots Band and various fundraising stalls making it a fun day out for the whole family. Ruth, who is an Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador will be walking for her Dad, Dennis. She said:‘I take part in Memory Walk every year as a tribute to my wonderful Dad, who had dementia for 17 years and passed away in 2012. Raising funds for Alzheimer’s Society is vital to help support people living with dementia and their carers today and to fund research to fi nd a cure once and for all. I’ve done the walks in rain and shine and they’re always lovely, because you’re united by a common cause. I would encourage everyone in Nottinghamshire to sign up to Memory Walk today and bring the wholefamily along to share the experience.’

Ruth Langsford urges Nottinghamshire residents to fi ght dementia together

Stapleford was the focus of this year’s summer community clean event last week as residents joined forces with Council employees and contractors in the Tevery Close/Copeland Avenue area.Local young people were alsoinvited to join in with the activities and accompany the Mayor of theBorough of Broxtowe, Councillor Stan Heptinstall MBE on a litter picking walk. Th e event was organ-ised by Broxtowe Borough Council to help support residents to take pride in their local area and to keep their neighbourhood clean.A Swap-Shop was also available on the day to reduce the number of unwanted items being thrown away as waste. Residents are invited to come along to exchange or donateunwanted items of householdfurniture which others can use. A skip was available for residents to dispose of household and garden waste and a team of caretakersassisted residents in the area to move and dispose of bulky items.

Th e big clean-up coincided withenvironmental improvements including hedge and grass cutting, a window cleaning service on the fl ats at Copeland Avenue and block cleaning and clearances.

Information stands for services in the borough and information and advice on keeping your home safe were also available on the day from the Fire and Rescue and Nottinghamshire Police services.

For more information about theclean-up contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3358 or email [email protected]

SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL STUDENT JOURNALISM AWARD

Laura Hough, who graduated on Wednesday 23rd July 2014 from theNottingham Trent University Department of Broadcasting and Journalism, is this year's winner of Soroptimist International Notting-ham’s Student Award for Journalism. To enter the award, students were asked to submit an audio or videopresentation which highlighted issues which have a potentially detrimental eff ect on the lives and aspirations of vulnerable young women in today’s Britain. Submissions included forced marriage, anorexia nervosa, laddish humour and its eff ect on the victims of rape. Laura’s project was an audiopresentation on the theme of Female Genital Mutilation. Despite being illegal in the UK since 2003, it is estimated that more than 20,000 girls a year are at risk of this viola-tion. "I am very proud to have done this project,” explained Laura. “It was diffi cult at times, but I am pleased to have helped in raising awareness of this issue". Th e aim of the award, donated by SI Nottingham, is to raise students’ awareness of women’s issues in the media, as well as being aware of the key values of Soroptimism that all women and girls should achieve their individual and collective potential.

As the standard was so high this year, it was decided to award a runner up to the award. Kelly Petterssen was nominated for her hard hitting project about the fate of Girls in Gangs, based in Nottingham.SI Nottingham would like to thank all staff in the department of Broadcasting and Journalism for their support for this award, in particular Academic Team Leader Carole Fleming and Dr EmmaHemmingway, Senior Lecturer in Broadcast Journalism. To hear the winning and runner-up presentations please visit www.sigbi.org/nottingham/award

Hi everyone,

Aft er years Notts County Council are going to do something about the road markings and gullies in the centre of Stapleford. I am waiting for the works programme to do the lines, zebra crossings and also alter the parking bay outside Lloyds bank. Stapleford town and Broxtowe Borough councils are being consulted as we speak on these issues. Any comments please contact them.

Also, a consultation begins concerning the parking outside our local schools, which weill be a good thing. All markings will be made clear and no parking Monday to Friday 8.00am to 4.30pm. Th is is about time, children's safety is more important than convenience for drivers. As I write the Fields Farm result from the enquiry will be made public? On a brighter note, congratulations to all the people that have helped to organise the Stapleford Remembers event including the Stapleford Community Group, Cllr Hull, Brenda, John, Chris and many others. Well done to all the businesses that have sponsored it. We will remember them.

Th ere is also a charity cricket match being held at Sandiacre cricket club on Sunday 24th August where Stapleford's fi nest! will do battle against Sandiacre. All welcome. We have had talks with a local developer and the Council concerning the planters opposite the police station, in the precinct and outside Th e Midland to tidy them up for next summer. Any ideas contact myself or Stapleford Community Group.Yours

Cllr John McGrath - Maggie

Hi everyone,

I hope this year has been ok for you so far. Th ere a lot of good things happening in Stapleford at the moment.

So as a Councillor I will try and tell you what I know. Iceland will be opening in August. Th e Stapleford Community group is in contact with them to fi nd out when they are interviewing for a number of vacancies, we hope they will be interested in a lot of the local unemployed. Next to Iceland will be a new pub, details to follow. Th e Jaguar pub has been demolished and a Co-op store will be built. More local jobs? Th ere is also a market open every Tuesday on Walter Parker Square, with a variety of stalls and local produce. Please support. Th ere are, also CSCS courses for the unemployed at the Meeting Place next to the Horse and Jockey, this entitles people to have a foot way into building construction and learn the many skills needed, to enquire about courses in the future please contact the Stapleford community group who help to organise it or the ladies at the Meeting Place, there are also many more ventures so feel free to go and see what is on off er.Th ere are still things that need address-ing in our Town. Th e zebra crossing on Derby road are a disgrace and so are the bumps throughout Stapleford, something needs to be done about the situation. Th e parking outside Lloyds Bank, Manor Chip Shop, all the streets off Brookhill, Halls Road and many other spots, please contact Mike Barnett at Notts County Council and tell him about your concerns.

Th e people that come from outside of Stapleford and park around the Halls Road area, I hope that they can remember that there is a children’s school there and it’s only £1 to park all day, is it worth inconveniencing people for so little money? You will all notice that Hickings Lane Park has been improved with footpaths and gym apparatus around the fi eld area. Pasture Road and Ilkeston Road have also been earmarked for these improvements.

From August 2nd a group will hold commemorations of 100 years since the start of the rst world war. It’ll both be a sombre and historic event with many local artists, people and activities going off , more details to follow. If you would like to take part in this historic event you can contact Richard McRay, Amanda Hull and myself. We are also looking to clear up the area of land between Sandiacre Road and the Erewash canal. On a sporting note the Old Cross ladies darts team won the league and cup double plus another cup. Well done to Jean and the girls. Stapleford Town football club is top of the Saturday league. Any foot-ball, darts and pool, men or women who would like to join these successful teams feel free to contact Th e Old Cross. Th e dominoes team are quite good too. Finally Th e Cross has had a re-furb, local acts, karaoke and much more will be tak-ing place. Also there is room for anyone wanting parties, meetings etc come in the Cross and speak to the friendly staff .Yours Cllr John McGrath (Maggie).

Care and Support at Home – Supporting vulnerable people during a heatwave

Th e heatwave plan for England 2013 (which this article is based on) describes the Heatwave Alert service which operates from 1 June to 15 September each year. Th e alert service comprises fi ve main levels (Levels 0-4) which are based on an average threshold temperature of 30C during the day and 15C overnight. Level 3 has been reached this month. Severe heat is dangerous to everyone. During a heatwave, when temperatures remain abnormally high over more than a couple of days, it can prove fatal.

At Home Instead Senior Care we have now issued specifi c advice to our CAREGivers regarding steps to take during the current heat-wave. We believe that these steps will minimise the risks from the heatwave and ensure that the health and well-being of people we look aft er is notcompromised. Some of the advice consists of common sense precautions but there are also practical hints and tips which are applicable to everybodyregardless of age or state of health. You will fi nd part of this advice below. How to keep out the heat• Keep curtains on windows exposed to the sun closed while the temperature outside is higher than it is inside. • Once the temperature outside has dropped lower than it is inside, open the windows. Th is might require late night visiting so it needs to be balanced by any possible security concerns• Water external and internal plants, and spray the ground outside windows with water to help cool the air however, avoid creating slip hazards• Advise the person to stay out of the sun, especially between the hours of 11:00am and 3.00pm• Advise them to stay in the shade and wear hats, sunscreen, thin scarves and light clothing if going outside. How to keep body temperatures down

• Ensure that the person reduces their levels of physical exertion• Suggest that they take regular cool showers or baths, or at least an over-all body wash

• Advise them to wear light, loose cotton clothes to absorb sweat and pre-vent skin irritation

• Suggest that they sprinkle their clothes with water regularly, and splash cool water on their face and the back of their neck. A damp cloth on the back of the neck helps temperature regulation.• Recommend cold food, particularly salads and fruit with a high water content• Advise to drink regularly, preferably water or fruit juice but avoid alcohol and caff eine (tea, coff ee))• Keep some cold water in the fridge. If you are visiting somebody, put some water in the fridge when you arrive and leave it within reach when you leave

I trust that this advice will help you and anybody you look aft er or care for stay cool and healthy during a hot spell.

Book Review by Clare LyonsThe Stars Tennis Balls by Stephen FryTh e last book review reminded me how much I enjoy Stephen Fry’s fi ctional writing. He has a great style and humour which comes across well in his unusual and oft en challenging storylines. It was hard to pick one in particular, but having already mentioned Making History this is perhaps my next favourite. It is an amazing romp through the life of Ned, a talented high-fl yer who falls from grace aft er a shock-ing prank goes wrong and he spends time in prison. Th e experience so changes Ned that the vengeful and brood-ing character that emerges is hard to reconcile with the fun loving character we fi rst encounter. Th e story is actually quite dark in places, but with enough humour and outrageous characters to be extremely readable and quite unforgettable. Th e basic storyline is based on the Count of Monte Cristo, with a modern twist. Fry makes some very damning (and hilarious) comments on the Upper Classes and although the story has nothing to do with tennis, like most of his books it’s well worth a read. All of Fry’s books are available as audio books, and most are read by Fry himself which makes them all the more enjoyable – perhaps a good idea for long journeys in the car or as a download for going walking over the Summer…

Children‛s ChoiceJaspers Beanstalk by Nick Butterworth and Mick InkpenTh is is a combination made in heaven for children’s literature as both men stand alone as truly excellent and prolifi c authors, we were drawn to the Jasper books by the hilarious illustration but the stories are good enough to keep our attention and to make us read more of them .Jasper is a quirky and fun cat – and this book is all about patience, something that the all the members of our family struggle with at times. It’s great to have a story about waiting for good things to happen as this is such a diffi cult skill for young children to learn. At this time of year it’s also nice to have a gardening book as keeping the kids occupied during the Summer break may well involve a lot of planting and watering.
