Who I am
Grant McLeod
Senior Applications Engineer
Prion Cutting Edge
I have been with Prion Cutting Edge since 2011 and am responsible for all
CAE/FEA training, support and consultancy.
I have extensive knowledge of other CAD/CAE applications including; NX,
Ansys, Plysim, Maxsurf, Autodesk; Inventor, Mech. Desktop, 3ds and Aveva.
Before joining Prion Cutting Edge, I worked as a Design and Process Engineer
for a leading manufacturer of luxury watercraft, where I used CAE to improve
the design and manufacture of composite structures.
I have degrees in Marine Engineering and Composites Design and
Manufacture.

Is Simulation for me?
Simulation has come a long way in the past few years. The toolset that we
have in Solid Edge ST8 enables us to undertake tasks in minutes that just
a few short years ago, would have taken days or even weeks to complete.
Full functionality FEA and CAE can now be run from our desktops, the
question for today is – Are YOU taking advantage of this?
What we will cover …..
• Simulation
• Is it for you?
• What can Simulation deliver to your business?
• I don’t look like this guy, can I do analysis?
• Why Solid Edge?

Is Simulation for Me?
There is no need to
review our designs
because our
customers are happy
with what we do
We don’t need
Simulation, we pay an
external contractor to do
all our analysis
Our guys are good
engineers but they
have no experience
of analysis
‘Bob’ does all our
analysis in-house, there
isn’t a need for anyone
else to be involved
I can see the
advantage of
simulation to us but it
is just another cost to
the business

We don’t need Simulation, we pay an external
contractor to do all our analysis
• What sort of data are you sending to your
contractor?
• Solid, Sheets, Beams. Is it clean and suitable
for analysis?
• Are you paying them handsomely to do menial
tasks which could be completed in-house?
• De-featuring models is one of the most time
consuming parts of FEA and is much easier in
CAD than Analysis packages.
• Are you getting work sent back which fails to
meet the design requirements?
• Finding out you missed the mark is expensive
and means time and cost to market is greatly
increased.

There is no need to review our designs because our
customers are happy with what we do
• ‘96% of unhappy customers don’t complain,
however 91% of those will simply leave and
never come back’ – Financial Training services.
• Don’t be a ‘Sucker’ (forgive me!)
• Stagnation and lack of development within
your organization does not mean your
competitors are doing the same!
• How do you quantify happiness?
• Is there any customer who would not want a
better product at the same cost or the same
product at a lower cost?
• Optimize Demo

Our guys are good engineers but they have no
experience of analysis
• >90% of FEA work is model preparation.
• Anyone with basic engineering knowledge
can do this.
• FEA programs are complex to use.
• Solid Edge Simulation makes running a
Simulation easy.
• Training an engineer to use FEA is simple.
• The cost of training an engineer to use
Simulation can be made back in savings in
analysis and material costs.
• Remember - Engineer derives from the latin
Ingeniare – to devise and Ingenium –
cleverness. We are smart cookies!!!

I can see the advantage of simulation to us but it is
just another cost to the business
• The majority of businesses I visit over-engineer
their products.
• Using the correct amount of material saves
manufacturing and handling costs and
increases service revenue.
• Virtual prototyping greatly decreases time to
market.
• This enables your business to be flexible to
ever-demanding customers, giving you the
edge on your competition.
• Simulation isn’t right for every business
• However ‘better safe than sorry’ engineering
costs a lot of money. How quickly would
material/handling savings return your
investment in Simulation?

‘Bob’ does all our analysis in-house, there isn’t a need
for anyone else to be involved
• ‘Bob’ would probably disagree!
• Bottlenecks during analysis workflows cost
the business time and money and cost Bob
his sanity!
• All engineers have the capacity to optimize their
work and clean up geometry.
• This means ‘Bob’ can concentrate on doing
the important part of the analysis.
• Streamlining this workflow benefits everyone.
• Your business is more profitable and can get
products to market quicker, the design
engineers play a greater part in product
development and ‘Bob’ doesn’t haven’t to
render himself unconscious.

Summary
• Solid Edge ST8 provides a comprehensive set of analysis tools that any
engineer can use.
• We have seen that costs can be incurred when;
• Passing jobs to an external contractor or a ‘Bob’ and the model is not
prepared for analysis.
• We do not continually seek to better our products and processes.
• Products are over-engineered, better safe than sorry!
• In-house analysts get snowed under with work, creating an unnecessary
bottle-neck in our output.
• Solid Edge ST8 can help us avoid these common pitfalls, employed
correctly, we can increase profitability, drive down time to market and stay
ahead of the competition.
