Kindergarten News
This month in Superkids we are learning how to write and identify two different letters and their corresponding letter
sounds. The first letter we learned about was uppercase and lowercase Gg when we met the superpet Golly. Golly is the
Superkid dog and loves to smell different items that make the /g/ sound. He also helped us find words that begin and end
with the sound /g/. Next we learned how to write uppercase and lowercase Aa when we met the Superkid Alf. Alf loves camp-
ing and going on adventures. He taught us about the /a/ sound and how to find words that begin and end with the sound /a/.
This month we have also been practicing listening for rhyming words in a story or making our own rhyming words. In math we
started the month by learning how to write numbers 0-5 and count out groups of objects in that range. Next we moved onto
learning how to add and subtract which is a skill we will work on all year. We ended the month by learning about different
shapes. In kindergarten we learn how to identify and create the shapes: circle, oval, square, rectangle, triangle, trapezoid,
and hexagon.

First Grade News
As we hit the mid mark of the First Quarter we are into our second unit of study in Superkids and math. Each unit in
Superkids has memory and pattern words the students need to study and memorize for the unit test. They will bring these
words home in their reading bag. When reading bags come home with stories to read we ask that you listen to your child read
the story and discuss the story at the end. If they come to a word they don't know encourage them to "say the sounds" or if
it's a word that cannot be sounded out remind them "this is a memory word". Our math curriculum provides students many
opportunities for practice of the skills we are learning to solidify them in their knowledge bank. One of these practice pieces
is in the form of home practice pages. These pages are always skills we have already taught and practiced at school. The
pages should not take a long period of time. If your child struggles with the material, please contact us so we can work to-
gether to come up with a plan of success for your child to complete the practice. Time spent at home at night practicing and
applying what we learn at school is a critical part of your child's learning as they solidify the foundational skills of reading
and math they learn in First Grade. If you have questions always feel free to contact us via email, a note in the folder or stop
in. We look forward to seeing you at parent/teacher conferences on the 18th and 23rd.

Second Grade News
It has been a very busy first quarter for the students in second grade at Grant Elementary! We went on our first field trip
of the year to the Grand Theater on October 10th. The students enjoyed the performance and were singing the theme song
long after we left the theater! We went shopping for the first time using our Bulldog Bucks! Our class earned so many Bulldog
Bucks for being respectful, responsible, and safe! In the classroom we reviewed the writing process and wrote our first in-
formational piece of writing in second grade about bats. In math we have been learning different strategies to develop our
number sense when adding and subtracting, identifying even and odd numbers, and making our own equation chains. In reading
the second graders have been continuing to learn with the Superkids. We have been learning to decode words and identify
word patterns using our knowledge of short and long vowel sounds. We have also reviewed homonyms, contractions, and ending
punctuation. Whew! That’s a lot of learning! Many students have been feeling chilly in the classroom during the past week due
to the fall weather. Students are welcome to bring an extra sweatshirt to keep on their hook in the coatroom if they so
choose.

Third Grade News
Third grade will be busy this October! We will be beginning our study of using place value to add and subtract.
In writing, we will be continuing our study of the 6 traits of writing and how to implement these writing traits
into our stories. In reading, we will be working with a rubric to explore google slides. In addition, we will be
starting unit 2 of our reading program and discussing how working together is a good way to solve a problem
through our readings and writing activities. To top off this exciting month of learning, we will be visiting the
School Forest on Thursday, November 29th! If any parents would like to volunteer for this exciting experience,
please email your third-grader’s teacher!

Fourth Grade News
It’s hard to believe we are more than half-way through October already! Since the weather is cooler now please
remember to send your child to school with a warm coat, hat, and mittens! We have been busy on the third floor
learning the routines and expectations of being a fourth grader. We have already been on two fun field trips to
The Grand Theater and the NTC Farm. We have been busy in the classroom too. In reading we are working on
our comprehension and fluency skills with stories from many genres. In writing we completed a friendly letter, 5
-paragraph essay and are now working on a personal narrative. In Math we have been studying mathematical pat-
terns and learning about the relationship between addition and multiplication. Students could benefit from mul-
tiplication facts practice at home with flash cards or appropriate apps. In Social Studies we have begun our
work on learning about the five regions of the United States. We look forward to finishing up the first quarter
and watching our students learn something new every day. Please let us know if you have any questions or con-

Fifth Grade News
The 5th graders have been working very hard since the start of school. In math we have learned about place
value and are currently working on multiplication. We are realizing that many of us are not sure of our basic
facts yet, and this is a much needed skill. Practicing our facts at home is highly encouraged. We have also been
working hard learning about geography, which is the study of the Earth's surface and will soon be learning about
how North America became populated as we start our exploration unit. In writing we have learned how we can
use lists to generate ideas for a personal narrative. Students have talked about picking a small moment, and
showing what happened instead of telling. We've also learned how inserting details, dialogue and strong word
choice, can improve our stories. Please make sure to check and empty your child's take home folder each night,
and to sign their assignment notebooks. Often times, we have put important information in there for you and we
use it as a means of communication.
Cold weather is coming. Start looking for your warm clothes, such as boots, winter coats, snow pants, hats and
gloves. You will be needing all those things shortly.

Music News
We have been having a lot of fun in music class this October! Kindergarten and 1st Grade have been focusing on practicing
using their light singing voices, and also moving to and playing the steady beat. 2nd Grade has just started learning our brand
new note, the half note, and they have enjoyed singing songs with that note and also playing games to practice hearing and
performing the new note. 3rd Grade has been working really hard to learn and memorize the names of the treble clef notes,
so they can be prepared to play the recorder after winter break. 4th Grade has been spending a lot of time working on good
singing technique, as well as singing in rounds, and 5th Grade has been learning all about musical form, or the structure or
pattern of music. Every grade will start working on Winter Concert music very soon, as it is very quickly approaching!

Greetings from the Science room! Grant scientists are hard at worked exploring and discovering. Kindergarteners are learn-
ing about their 5 senses. 1st graders are observing and working with rocks in their many sizes. 2nd grade is learning about air
and how it makes our weather. 3rd graders are working like geologists as they study rocks and minerals. 4th grade is studying
the solar system and looking forward to a trip to the Planetarium. 5th graders are conducting experiments and looking for
variables that may affect the outcome.

Art News
Hello Grant Families! A lot of awesome art has been created already in the art room this year! 5th grade finished their space
landscapes, and have been working on their surreal meals--paintings of meals inspired by surrealism! 4th grade finished their
Onomatopoeia Pop Art, and have been learning about logo design with artist Aaron Draplin, creating their own personal logo
and self-portrait. 3rd grade completed their Name-line Abstraction Rainbows and have been learning about Pointalism and
artist George Serrat as they create planets using this cool art style. 2nd grade wrapped up learning about all of the elements
of art with our Art Soup project, and are now learning about leaves and warm and cool colors. 1st grade rocked their ice
cream cones using warm and cool colors, and are creating mischievous Texture Monsters. Kindergarten learned that they can
make artwork using lines and shapes just like famous artists, and are now working with the three most important colors of all,
the primary colors. If you'd like a sneak peek at the supper cool artwork that is being created, I am always looking for volun-
teers to hang up artwork in the hallway :)

October is Cyber Safety Month All grades will be learning how to stay safe, be responsible, and respectful when they are online. I use a mixture
of videos, activities, games, and discussion to help students better understand the importance of being appropri-
ate online.

What should I teach my kid about safe online behavior?
As soon as your kids begin to go online, it's important to explain your expectations of their behavior. By acting responsibly and respectfully, they will enjoy their time online and get the best of the Internet while mostly avoiding things such as cyberbullying and inappropriate content. Here are some basics to share with your child:
Communicate appropriately. Use the right language for your audience. You might write or speak to a teacher differently from a friend. And never use all caps!
Keep private things private. Don't share personal information, including passwords, your home ad-dress, inappropriate images, and gossip.
Respect others. Be courteous. Disagree politely.
Don't lie, steal, or cheat. Don't try to deceive others. Remember to give credit where credit is due. And, although it's easy to copy others' work, download things without permission, or use game cheat codes, don't do it.
Be an "upstander." If someone you know is being targeted by a bully, stand up for that person. You would want him or her to do the same for you.
Report misbehavior. The Internet is a giant community, and you can help it be a nice place.
Follow your family's rules. If your parent tells you to avoid certain websites or to stop texting after a certain time, listen. The more you act responsibly, the more privileges you'll get.
Think before you post, text, or share. Consider how you and others might feel after you've posted something. It's not always easy to take back what you've said online, and your online behavior can cre-ate a lasting footprint.
