Almost immediately a campaign was launched to raise the necessary funds needed to repair the pool. Interestingly, during the second week of August, the group heard that they had successfully secured a staggering £1.95 million from the Coastal Communities Fund. This was followed by contributions from Cornwall Council of £500,000 Local Enterprise Partnership £240,000, Penzance Town Council and the campaigners themselves have added £160,000 to the pot. Just putting that out there….
You can read the Telegraph article in full either on our website or the paper version is available at the Grange Now office if you wish to read it.
Letter from the EditorAt a meeting on Wednesday (August 27) South Lakeland District Council’s (SLDC) cabinet councillors voted to support the Supermarket Levy proposal. If the proposal is adopted, it allows the council to put a levy on large supermarkets in their areas. Councils will then be able to put the money raised back into the local community to boost jobs, trade and services. This prompts us to ask what the future holds on the Cartmel peninsula. Will Booths be built? Will it become part of Sainsburys or Waitrose? If not a supermarket on the Toyota site then what? Will any of these supermarkets, including Tesco now have to pay money into the local community and if so how much and who would decide how it can be used? Could the levy be applied to smaller supermarkets? We need answers, and Grange Now are investigating.Meanwhile there is a compound effect taking place of pressure on bus and train services along with an increase in housing volume. Less transport for more people? Read more on page 3. Grange Town Council have applied for designation of the Parish as a Neighbourhood Area with a view to preparing a Neighbourhood Plan. A public consultation began on 28th August (and runs for 6 weeks) asking whether this is an appropriate area for Neighbourhood Plan. Mayor Tricia Thomas opens the Lido gallery
Lido gets a makeover
Lido in Penzance is thrown a £1.95 million lifelineThe Jubilee Pool, a seawater lido in Penzance, which was up until last year, still very much open for business, has been thrown a lifeline. Freelance journalist Alex Wade wrote in the Weekend section of the Daily Telegraph on August 16th, of how the lido took “a hell of a battering” during the winter storms and suffered some fairly serious structural damage.
The Lido on the Promenade has long been a sad and sorry sight. After closing over 20 years ago, the iconic outdoor pool has fallen into disrepair which many describe as, ‘an eyesore’ but now thanks to the enterprise and imagination of Town Mayor, Councillor Tricia Thomas and Councillor Joanna Greenway, it has now been transformed by a diverse range of pictures.
Tricia saw the opportunity to use the hoardings on the now-closed Lido to show a fantastic range of photographs, from nineteenth century cocklers on the Bay to images of Bay Search and Rescue’s latest rescue vehicles.Grange has also hosted the Morecambe Bay Partnership 2020 Photographic Exhibition and Councillor Thomas explained that she wanted to complement this, “The Lido was built in 1934 and was a beautiful building. Sadly, it has become derelict and we hope that this exhibition on the Lido will bring some beauty back to this part of our Edwardian Promenade. The Lido Gallery aims to celebrate the beauty of our town and enhance the outside of the Lido while it awaits a new lease of life.
Twenty-two local small businesses and private individuals have sponsored the images, and Richard Fletcher of Fletcher’s Greengrocers said, “the Lido is unique and it is really good that we have had the chance to take part in this. Let’s hope this is the beginning of improvements and we can bring the Lido back to life.”Grange Now sponsored the high tide scene. Chris said “We are delighted to be a part of such an innovative and positive project.” The Town Council Leader, Councillor Tom Harvey is impressed with the changes at the Lido and told Grange Now, “the Lido has been transformed. It is fabulous that so many local businesses and the community have come together so quickly to make this happen.”

Proposed cuts to both buses and trains are coming at a time when new and affordable housing schemes are expected to be built all over the peninsula but surely if there is a need for more housing, there is an even greater need for the infrastructure to support them.
No infrastructure as bus routes get cut
FOR THE CHOP: The popular 532 service is one of the routes losing its subsidy
ABOVE: The new site next to Berners Close, which hopes to be completed Spring 2015
Does it not follow that there is a need for more buses not less. The first development of affordable housing, next to Berners Close, is rapidly taking shape and is due to be completed in Spring 2015. It seems rather bizarre to be told you are eligible for an ‘affordable house’ but you will need to have a car to get anywhere! One of our readers, Colin Reakes, obviously concurs with this view as you will
see from his letter to the Editor on the letters page.Subsidy for the 532 will end on Tuesday 14th October. The subsidy currently supports all journeys between 09:31 -17:31 and these will all be withdrawn with the exception of the 13:31 which will retain the subsidy. It is expected that a new service will provide journeys until Mid-
afternoon Monday to Friday, with a limited Saturday service also provided. You can read more on this in Bill Wearing’s report, County Matters, as it is to be hoped that the service will continue to operate on a commercial basis.By the time you read this the subsidy for the evening X6 service will already have stopped. We believe the evening service will be as follows; The 18:55 Barrow to Kendal and 20:15 return will only operate on Monday to Friday (i.e. the service is withdrawn on Saturday)The 20:25 Barrow to Kendal and 21:45 return Monday to Saturday will be withdrawnThe 21:55 Barrow to Kendal and 23:15 return will only operate on Saturdays (i.e. the service will be withdrawn on Monday to Friday). Here at Grange Now we have already received complaints about the withdrawal of bus services with residents telling us “we are being left with no way of commuting between Grange and Flookburgh or Kendal and Grange.” Add to this the proposed rail changes with the threat of a potential move by the Department of Transport to remove TransPennine from our route leaving the entire operation to Northern. The impact for tourism, commuters and locals could be serious. Claims from the railway union the RMT state that a complete move to Northern as the single operator could mean older rolling stock, less carriages, poor station facilities and lack of passenger facilities and access for wheelchairs, prams, bikes etc. Perhaps more importantly it could mean an end to direct services to Manchester and beyond to the airport. What do you think?
“We are being left with no way of commuting between Grange and Flookburgh or Kendal and Grange.”
County MattersAs the summer comes to a close hopefully we can look forward to an Indian summer for the autumn.Unfortunately the County Council Local Committee for South Lakeland has confirmed its decision to impose on-street car parking charges on to the streets in Ambleside, Bowness and Kendal. This was despite a very strong campaign by local residents and supported by all Conservative County Councillors to stop these charges. The Lib Dem Councillors voted this through at South Lakeland supported by their Labour partners in Carlisle.I will, with my Conservative colleagues, continue to fight these charges.Another consequence of the Lib-Lab budget imposed on us at the February budget meeting is just coming into effect. This involves cuts to all rural bus subsidies across the County.I am totally opposed to this proposal but we were out voted by the Lib Dem and
Labour Councillors at the meeting. The consequences of these cuts will be that late evening services for the X6 will be terminated shortly and the 532 circular route will also lose its subsidy in October.I am working with our transport team to help alleviate the cuts by hopefully persuading an operator to provide a service similar to the 532 which will operate on a fully commercial basis.National Grid for have requested everyone to take part in the consultation which is to be sent out to householders this month. The details are below and I hope as many people as possible send in their views. I am totally opposed to on land pylons but will support the undersea option. The manager of National Grid’s North West Coast Connections Project is urging people to make sure they have their say during the consultation exercise which starts on Thursday 4th September and runs until Friday 28th November 2014.Around 135,000 newsletters will be mailed out in the run-up to a series of 33 consultation events being held in September. These will go to homes
within one kilometre of the routes National Grid is consulting on. The newsletters will contain information about the Project and a map detailing the different routes being considered for the new connection. Copies will also be available from local libraries. The company has been asked to provide a new connection into the electricity transmission network for the proposed new 3.4 GW nuclear power station, Moorside, near Sellafield in West Cumbria and to export energy produced by an offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea.Just a reminder to all residents in the Low and High Newton area that a public meeting will be held in the Village Hall at High Newton on Tuesday 9th September at 7pm to consider the future of the Hall and how the local community can help.If you need any further information regarding the meeting please contact our County Area Engagement Officer Kelly Alty on 01539 713447 or email [email protected], Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor for Grange Division

In addition one may be entitled to various other elements of state pension such a state second pension, SERPS, pension credits, graduated pension etc. You need 30 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions or credits to get the full basic state pension. It is possible to put off claiming your state pension and in this case you will be entitled to additional state pension or a lump sum payment, subject to various rules, when your state pension is drawn. You may have heard in the Press over recent months that changes are to take place with the state pension and presently these are planned to apply if you reach state pension age on or after 6th April 2016. The government has stated that the full new state pension will be no less than £148.40 per week although the actual amount will not be set until autumn 2015.One important change is that not only will you usually need ten qualifying years to get any state pension (as presently), but in order to receive the maximum new state pension you will need 35 qualifying years which is an increase from the current 30 qualifying years. Interestingly, the government has announced a new scheme which
allows individuals to top up their current state pension and this will be available as early as October 2015. This is in the form of a new voluntary class 3a National Insurance contribution. As an illustration, the contribution required for an extra £1 of pension per week for a person aged 65 is £890. This equates to 5.84% and will increase with inflation. Whether or not this represents a good deal depends entirely upon the individual and is certainly not compulsory and so the fact that it is available can only a good thing. The whole spectra of pensions – whether it be state pension or private pensions – is undergoing huge transition as introduced in the Budget in March. The major emphasis from the government is on individuals taking greater control of their finances both in retirement and throughout life. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. The current maximum basic state pension is £113.10 per week. In the current economic climate it is difficult to imagine how one can survive on that basic state pension alone.

A couple of months ago we used some publicity to try and recruit more responders. We had a half- page advertisement in the June edition of Grange Now and a stall at the Edwardian Festival, which resulted in a pleasing number of enquiries from potential volunteers. We were saddened to learn of the death of John Kirkman, a founder member of the team. John was an enthusiastic responder

New co-ordinator for voluntary social car schemeAfter many years of volunteering, William Boyce, co-ordinator and driver of the voluntary social car scheme, is set to take, ‘well-deserved retirement’. Cumbria County Council were quick to praise Mr Boyce’s efforts, who was also with the former charity, Community Transport South Lakeland. Mr Boyce will retire on 1st August and hand over
the reins to one of his fellow volunteer drivers, Kirsten Ross. The scheme provides transport to members of the community who cannot travel by public or private transport. The cost, which can be shared with fellow passengers, is 36p per mile for the first 20 miles then 25p per mile thereafter. The scheme relies totally on
volunteers so if you own a reliable car, have time on your hands and would like to help your neighbours please call new local co-ordinator Kirsten Ross on 015395 32232 for more information. Expenses are reimbursed. N.B. Our apologies as this should have appeared in the August issue – Ed.
Christmas Shoe Box AppealNow is the time to start thinking about filling a shoebox for a child who will otherwise probably have nothing this Christmas … or last Christmas … in fact many of the children we have seen have never, in their lives, had any toys or gifts of any kind.
Empty, covered shoeboxes and leaflets are now available from Grange Now. The leaflets give you details of the charity, the children and what to put into your shoebox - stationery and hygiene items, hat, scarf and gloves, and a few toys and sweets, plus a £2 donation so that we can pay for the transport to Romania. Your shoebox will be collected in early November ready for our local team to hand them out in early December. We have been hugely encouraged by the tremendous support for Boxes of Hope, Cumbria in its first year. With your support, we have been able to reach over 9,000 children with shoebox gifts; finish the building of a school extension; sponsor the education
of 36 children; buy a new minibus for transporting young disabled people to a day centre and for taking children on outings when funds allow; pay the electricity bill for an after school club which would otherwise have closed; provide money for dressings and ointment in 2 villages where residents had nasty lacerations; supply school uniform and other new clothing to hundreds of children; provide huge boxes of stationery supplies to various schools; fund a group of children to go to the zoo. We have sent teams in December to give out the shoeboxes, April to visit the new school extension and July to take 2 groups, each of 40 children, to a summer camp for their first ever holiday. All these trips have been self funded. Our administration
costs are minimal and we are all volunteers, so all money we raise goes to where it is needed.
Our latest challenge is to raise money to buy a commercial washing machine for Tinca School. Attendance at school is often poor because the children have no clean clothes (because they have no running water at home) and they are ridiculed by
their classmates for being dirty and smelly. if you would like to make a small donation, every little helps. Or you may like to hold a coffee morning.
There are lots of stories and pictures on Facebook and on our website www.boxesofcumbria.co.uk or contact Barbara Squires, 015395 35492 for further information.

Common sporting injuries.Playing sport regularly is a great thing: it’s enjoyable, good for our health, our mind and recommended by medical professionals everywhere.
However exercise can have a distinctly unhealthy effect on our feet. When we run, our body weight is multiplied up to three times, with our feet bearing the brunt of this stress at every stride (over 1,000 strides per mile, per foot). An average-sized man will process 112 tons of weight through each limb per mile. The demands made on your feet and lower limbs can lead to a range of injuries, including blisters, sprained
ankles, torn ligaments, shin splints (leg pain), knee pain, lower back pain and other joint or muscle problems. Added to these are common complaints such as corns, callus and athlete’s foot. Asking too much, too soon of your joints and muscles can lead to injury. Running style, poor footwear and even minor limb length differences can also contribute to injuries.. Podiatrists can treat a number of injuries and can also help injuries developing in the first place. Next month Gout

Would you like to do something different on Christmas Day?How did you spend your Christmas Day last year? Was it fun, rewarding, memorable or different?
For the last 8 years a group of Grange residents have been hosting a Christmas Day to remember for about 50 residents of Grange who otherwise would be on their own that day. It isn’t a particularly difficult task thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of those involved. The organisers, helpers and participants all report that it is a thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile event and we want to keep it that way. Helpers share the tasks which include delivering invitations, decorating the hall, preparing and serving food, participating in entertainments, washing-up after the event. The long term future of the Friends at Christmas event is not only dependent donations but also on gifts of time. The membership of the organising team changes
over time as individual’s personal commitments change. Since last Christmas 4 team members have moved out of the Grange area and are no longer available to help. We are looking to secure the long-term future of this event by increasing the membership of the organising team. You would need to give about an hour one evening per month September to December and about 3 to 4 hours on Christmas Day.We will be contacting everyone involved in making last year such a huge success soon with meeting dates for 2014. Anyone who would like to join in either as part of the organising team or simply spend time helping on Christmas Day please call Fiona Daley on 33232 or Liz Benson on 32507 for more information.
Foodbank needs youThe next foodbank collection is on Sunday October 5th, at the Parish Hall in Grange. Donations will be gratefully received, by a team of volunteers, between 1 - 3pm.
A member of the local group of volunteers told Grange Now, “Unfortunately the need for food has not diminished, in fact it would seem to be increasing. Our contribution from the peninsula is much appreciated.”

Dr Jane Irwin appointed Deputy Lieutenant of CumbriaThe Lord-Lieutenant, Her Majesty The Queen’s representative in Cumbria, has appointed Dr Jane Irwin, of Nutwood Surgery, to be a Deputy Lieutenant of Cumbria. Dr Irwin will take up this position under the name of Mrs Norman. Dr Irwin told Grange Now, “you are appointed until you are 75, and as I will have retired by then, I will become Deputy Lieutenant under my married name of Mrs Norman.”
The Lord-Lieutenant is required to appoint a number of Deputy Lieutenants to assist in her duties, the maximum number being determined by the population of the county. The maximum number for Cumbria is 37. The role of the Deputy Lieutenants is varied and they act as the Lord-Lieutenant’s “eyes and ears” within local
communities and advise him/her more generally.Deputy Lieutenants are appointed from across the county and have a wealth of experience in connection with voluntary organisations, the Armed Forces and all other aspects of life in Cumbria.Picture: Deputy Lieutenant, Mrs Jane Norman
Silver Sunday - valuing our older generation Silver Sunday was launched in 2012 by The Sir Simon Milton Foundation and Councillor Christabel Flight, after a report discovered more than a third of people over 75 said they were lonely.
The aim was to celebrate the value and knowledge older residents contribute to our communities, while at the same time combating loneliness, and to help those who need it, to get out and about and meet new people. It is a day of fun and free activities for older people.Silver Sunday 2012 was a fantastic success with over 2000 people taking part in 19 events in Westminster alone. It gained the support of Joanna Lumley, Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Michael Parkinson. The following year then saw Silver Sunday go national and
the event grew significantly with over 150 events being held across the country.Everyone can get involved, whether that’s organising an event, spreading the word, or simply attending an activity. This year’s Silver Sunday will take place on 5th October 2014. From concerts to museum tours, cycle rides to chocolate tastings, there’s something for everyone. To find out more go to the website: silversunday.org.uk or email [email protected].
Clare House to host Macmillan Coffee MorningThis year why not get involved in the ‘world’s biggest coffee morning’ in the sumptuous surroundings of Clare House. Take in the wonderful gardens and enjoy the magnificent views of Morecambe Bay at their garden party, which will take place between 10.30am and 2pm on Friday 26th September.
Enjoy tea, coffee, cakes and scones while raising money for this well deserved charity. Louise Read from Clare House told Grange Now, “Some local businesses will be attending to make this first charity event a real success...oh, and did I mention there will be cake?”Louise also said that all donations of cake will be gratefully accepted on Thursday 25th September.
Grange Christmas Tree Festival St Paul’s Church, Grange, will be hosting the Christmas Tree Festival again this year.It is hoped to have the trees in place to coincide with the Christmas tree
lighting on Saturday 6th December and they will then be left in place throughout the Christmas period. In the October issue we will be announcing the theme and local groups and charities are invited to be participants in
this festival. This will be a great opportunity to showcase your group’s activities. If you wish to book now and reserve your place please contact Christine on 32013 or [email protected]

8000 visitors enjoy a grand (but slightly damp) day out at Cartmel Show.
Despite a slightly damp start, a great day out was enjoyed by one and all at Cartmel Show on 6th August. Around 8,000 visitors showed up in total to experience one of the oldest agricultural shows in the county.
Grange WI members entered items in the Village Industries section at Cartmel Show and between them won 10 prizes and 2 special cups. Crowds of people gathered to watch Ulverston father and daughter Ian and Katy Shuttleworth, of Mountbarrow Farm, take the top spot in the heavy horse section with brood mare Mountbarrow Princess. Stick judge Gordon Wilkinson, from Rusland, spent more than an hour inspecting the new stick category which made its first appearance at Cartmel this year, while Naomi Boorman, from Helsington, near Levens, took the supreme championship in the dairy section with David Wright’s Holstein cow in milk.
Cartmel Show president Lucy Cavendish, of nearby Holker Hall, said “I’ve been coming to Cartmel Show all my life.
“It’s a real celebration of rural life and I’m delighted to be here as president. People love coming here, it’s wonderful to see.”

Fire Hazards in grease extract systems are common and major fires can occur which can have a devastating effect on your business as insurance companies ‘rarely’ pay out without a recent Extract System Cleaning Certificate. You have a legal duty to prevent such fires occurring. Part of the regulations stipulates that grease extract systems be assessed for fire hazards and extractor fan cleaning is a legal requirement. The workplace must carry out a risk assessment of extraction cleaning, once every three, six or twelve months depending on the amount of use.If your extract system has not been cleaned and there is evidence of grease deposits within the system, you will be failing to comply with the Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations 1995
Tribute concert for former Grange Bank ManagerThe stunning and extensive gardens at ‘Honeypotts’ were the beautiful setting for a fundraising event on July 15th, in memory of former Grange Bank Manager, David Harding, who sadly died from Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2009. Since his untimely death, his wife Sandra has been on the Committee of the Blackpool Wyre and Fylde Support Branch who raise funds to assist people living with this devastating condition. She also works tirelessly to raise awareness of MND, giving presentations at universities, hospitals and hospices to give healthcare professionals a better
understanding of how this disease affects not only the sufferer but also their families. The Big Band Concert was a joint event put on by Blackpool Wyre and Fylde Support Branch in conjunction with the North Lancashire and South Cumbria branch with proceeds being shared equally. It was very well attended by over 150 people who were entertained by the South Cumbrian Retirement Band (SCRB) made up from experienced brass players, most of whom also belong to other bands in the area. An Ensemble from St Pius X School in Barrow-in-Furness comprising Year Six pupils aged 11 also gave a delightful
short recital in the interval. The children, led by Mr Peter Mills, were thanked individually for their excellent playing and presented with a Certificate from the Motor Neurone Disease Association for their contribution to the event. Refreshments of tea and cream scones were served in the interval.Sandra told Grange Now, “A massive total of £1,563.57 including donations was raised, which will help people living with Motor Neurone Disease. On behalf of both committees I would like to give grateful thanks to all who supported this event and helped on the day, without whom we could not have achieved such a successful outcome.”
Buy and Sell on Beacon and help hospice ‘Beacon’ is an online community-based shop, similar to eBay, in that any item can be bought or sold but where a percentage of every sale goes directly to St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston.
Beacon, which was launched just a few weeks ago, has received the wholehearted support of Warwick Davis who has in the past called Ulverston his ‘favourite place in the world’. The Star Wars actor is urging everyone to use Beacon and help raise money for the Hospice. If you have an item to sell, just go onto St Mary’s website, create an account and upload your item. Anyone can create an account and sell an item with the only proviso being a minimum of £1 of the profit from each sale goes to the hospice. You can change this amount and give as much as you like as there is the opportunity for the seller to donate as much as 100% of their profit. Claire Crisp, spokesperson for the hospice, said: “It’s a fantastic initiative that
we hope people will get on board with and support because it’s a new revenue stream.Any support we can get from the community using the marketplace would be much appreciated.”Ian Gillet who created the site has said recently that, “The way people are buying and selling in recent years is through social networking sites.Beacon combines the best parts of Facebook and Ebay to benefit local a charity and the community.” Mr Gillet continued,“we’ve made it really local, people can see stuff for sale within a quarter of a mile away.”Beacon can be accessed by following this link mybeacon.biz/hospice

Cartmel community come together for St Mary’s HospiceOn Sunday 27 July, the garden of the Royal Oak pub in Cartmel became the venue for a themed garden party to raise funds for St Mary’s Hospice and Cartmel in Bloom.
One of the organisers told Grange Now, “the Cartmel community came together to raise much needed funds while having fun in the sun. Music was provided by ‘Smooth Chalk’ while anyone could join DJ Windy and The Cotton Town Swing Dancers for a 30s and 40s dance in the marquee.”
With dancing, games, a raffle, a treasure hunt and lots of great food on offer, there was certainly something for everyone. The management and staff of the Royal Oak, as well as many of the guests, were in period costume with inspiration from Dad’s Army being obvious. First prize for best costume went to horticulturalist and landscape designer Sarah Byrne.Karen Lyons, owner of The Kings Arms and The Royal Oak pubs in Cartmel commented, “this is what village life should be about and we are very happy to be able to put this kind of event together. Clearly, both residents and visitors appreciate the opportunity to relax, socialise and have fun.” The event raised £1,000 to be split between both charities.

How to rent - a checklistFor people who cannot afford to buy their own home, and don’t qualify for social housing, the only option is to rent in the private sector. There’s a shortage of affordable private rented housing across South Lakes, partly due to the number of holiday homes,
but where private renting is available it can often feel daunting for both tenant and landlord. The government has published ‘How to rent - The checklist for renting in England’. The checklist is designed for future and existing assured shorthold tenants in the private rented sector, and gives a useful summary of rights and responsibilities, with helpful suggestions on questions to
ask. It includes links to other websites for more detailed information. The checklist is available on the GOV.UK website at www.gov.uk/government/publications/how-to-rentFree, confidential advice and help is available from South Lakes Citizens Advice Bureau on any aspect of debt, consumer problems, benefits, housing, employment and any
other problems. We have various outlets across South Lakeland and can also give advice over the phone – telephone 015394 46464 for an appointment and help.If you don’t need us for advice, how about helping us by becoming a volunteer or making a donation? Not many people realize that we are a charity - see our website for details www.southlakescab.org.uk.

The Dales and Lakes historic vehicle day
This year’s event was held on Sunday 10 August. The first of these annual events took place in 1995 and was a personal initiative of the late Frank Brooks, former Town Clerk of Grange, with the help of Craven Old Wheels Society and other enthusiasts.Since then it has become a regular fixture in August raising money for local charities. This year’s nominated charity was, The Bendrigg Trust at Old Hutton near Kendal, who provide residential adventure activity courses mainly for groups of young
people with a disability. The Trust’s aims are to promote integration, encourage independence and build self confidence. The weather forecast on event day was poor, and
hinted at the aftermath of hurricane Bertha but 120 entrants did arrive despite the wet and blustery day, and the organisers would like to thank them for attending. One overseas visitor commented that in Spain “if it drizzles nobody wants to go out, but Cumbrians are made of sterner stuff.”The afternoon rain cleared for a while and the visitors were treated to live country and western and jazz band music, with circus acts and birds of prey displays and entertainment from Lakeland Radio, with finally a presentation of the prizes by the Mayor of
Grange Patricia Thomas.Any enquiries to help Bendrigg ring 01539723766 or email [email protected] you would like to volunteer to assist our Grange event contact Geoff Critchley 015395 33217or visit Lymehurst Bar in Grange LA11 7EY at 8pm every 3rd Wednesday in the month to talk motoring. Grange Now travels
Barbara Ramsden took Grange Now to China and the picture is taken in “Pit One “ in the Terracotta Army museum near Xi’an in China.

Give it some welly…The Donkey Sanctuary at Leeds cares for over 20 donkeys which have been neglected, mistreated or in some cases subjected to horrific cruelty. Most of the donkeys which are now cared for at the sanctuary are used to provide therapy for disabled children and adults. Donkeys also love to have fun and enjoy nothing better than a game of tug-o-war with welly boots.
Local resident, Margaret Batty, who has adopted a donkey and who is a keen fundraiser for the charity told Grange now, “donkeys love to have fun and enjoy

game. Please could you drop off your old wellies at Grange Library and they will be taken to the sanctuary. The charity relies on public donations to carry on caring for these wonderful creatures and to give unwanted donkeys a safe and warm environment in which to live.”The donkey pictured is called Billy O and has been adopted by Margaret Batty.

Have Your SayNorth West Coast Connections
National Grid’s North West Coast Connections Project is about connecting Moorside, the proposed new nuclear power station that will be built near Sellafield in West Cumbria, into the existing electricity network.
We are holding a 12 week consultation to find out what you believe we need to consider when deciding on the route the new connection can take so we can export the electricity Moorside generates to the places where it is used.
Get involvedOur consultation runs from 4 September until 28 November 2014 and includes 33 public events. The feedback we receive will help us decide how and where we build the connection in the North West.
To learn more about the Project, what we’re consulting on and how you can take part, come along to one of the events listed below, go to the Project website or contact us directly (see below for details).
Public Consultation – 4 September to 28 November 2014
Members of our Project team will be on hand at events to answer questions and discuss the Project in more detail.

I was flattered to learn the other day that I have been named a “Campaign Champion” by the cycling charity Sustrans. Of course it is great to have the work we do to keep the roads safe recognised but the key benefit to this should be that I can work together with other MPs and members of the House of Lords to get more funding for cycling and other healthy forms of transport. For Grange and the Cartmel Peninsula this really could not come at a better time as Sustrans are just piloting their cycle route from Walney to Glasson (the Bay Cycle Way) which will pass through Grange and Cartmel. I really am sure that this is entirely coincidental.
Anyway we know from experience that opening a major cycle route, as Sustrans plan this one to be, can bring a lot of new tourism business along with it, so the Bay Cycle Way will be great news and I will use my new responsibility to ensure that it is a success. Sustrans are planning a test ride on the weekend of the 13th and 14th September so if you see any cyclists coming through Grange at that point please do cheer them along. I think that they are planning to finish up in Grange on the 13th after walking down to Humphrey Head in the afternoon and set off from there on the 14th.
Thanks to everyone who came along to meet up with us as we travelled through the Grange area as part of my

annual Summer Tour. As I wrote last month this tour is a really important part of my year and one that I look forward to a lot. What determines whether it is a success or not is how many people come along to say “hello” so thanks again to all of you who did.
If you missed our visit I am back in Grange for a surgery at Victoria Hall on Thursday 30th September between 4pm and 5pm. No need to make an appointment just turn up and discuss with me anything where you feel that I can help.
Finally as I mentioned last month the National Grid are starting to consult on their plans for the new power lines between the West Coast of Cumbria and Heysham. They have now announced that you will be able to express your views from the 4th September for 12 weeks. If you go to www.northwestcoastconnections.com you can find out more about the scheme. The National Grid is also running a series of road shows about their plans. They are coming to Cartmel on the 20th September (for some strange reason they don’t seem to have any plans to visit Grange). Please do go along and have a look at what they are proposing, this will be a very big investment in our part of the world and we need to ensure that we get as much benefit from it as we can.
As ever, if you could not get along to the Summer Tour and cannot get along on the 30th September and there is something I can help you with then please do drop me a line by writing to [email protected] or phoning us on 01539 723 403
Thanks for your support Tim
Mayor’s ReportThings haven’t been quite so busy on the Mayoral front this month which is a good thing since I have been rather busy working with Councillor Joanna Greenway to complete a project to enhance the façade of the Lido with huge photographs of Grange past and present.
I would like to take this opportunity to give her a massive ‘Thank you’ for the sterling work she put in to make the project possible, as well as thanking the various sponsors from the local community and Claire from Grange Town Council who all helped make the whole thing achievable. Of course, without the wonderful photographs from Sue, Nick and Grange Photographic Society we would have been a bit stuck, so a huge thank you goes to them too. The Lido does look a lot better and is attracting very positive attention both from passers-by and the media. In fact the project is proving so popular that we are contemplating Phase 2, so if you would be interested in sponsoring a panel or sharing a larger panel please get in touch with myself or Claire at the Victoria Hall.I did brave the weather to attend the annual Dales and Lakes Historic Vehicle Day and was very impressed with the range and calibre of the entries. I was even more impressed with the number of people who turned out both as
competitors and visitors on what was really not a pleasant Sunday. You really are a hardy lot round here! This month there is no Full Council Meeting, though the office continues to be busy.As Mayor it is traditional to lead a number of events to raise money for charity. The first of these will be a Concert on October 17th at the Victoria Hall staring various local performers. Please make a note in your diary to attend – details will be forthcoming nearer the date. And moving on to November 29th there will be a Mayor’s Christmas Fair where local groups and charities are invited to apply for a stall, free of charge. If you are interested please contact Sally Haines at the Victoria Hall. Stalls are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. This would be an ideal pre-Christmas fundraiser with the opportunity to sell festive foods and gifts. I hope lots of you will be joining me in what I hope will be a fun and very worthwhile event.Tricia Thomas, Civic Mayor.

Grange Mothers’ Union A very busy morning followed by a slightly quieter afternoon was the order of the day at the Mothers’ Union Open Day held on Saturday 12th July at St Paul’s Parish Rooms. Grange Probus ClubOn August 11th, Robert Wheatley gave a talk on the development of Barrow in Furness with particular reference to the part played by James Ramsden. In the early 19th century Barrow was just a small village and it was the discovery of high quality iron ore in the area which prompted the beginning of the town’s growth. The rapid development of mining lead to the construction of the Furness Railway to transport the ore to Barrow. Later Ramsden and the other men involved decided to build a steel works in Barrow rather than carry on shipping the ore away from the town.Eventually the production of steel lead to the ship building industry which we still have today.PROBUS is a club for professional and business men who have retired from their normal occupations. The club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel for coffee and a talk or presentation by a guest speaker on a topic of general interest. New members are always welcome. If you would like to learn more please contact:- Chairman, Sean Jameson 015395 32105 or Secretary, Ewen Cameron on 015395 32319.
Coffee ClubIn July we were delighted to welcome back Rachel and Lindsay Flintoff who told us of their experiences after working for 25 years in Thailand. Rachel, who came from a spiritually dark village in Malaysia told us how God had led her through many different experiences to marry Lindsay and then join him, first in literature work then in church planting in north-west Thailand close to the Burmese border. We learnt much about this beautiful ‘Land of the Free’ where so many are enslaved by huge debts and spiritual depression. Thailand, known until 1939 as Siam, is famous for Siamese cats, conjoined twins, Thai boxing, orchids, elephants, and a much revered constitutional monarchy.Their church base is at Sam Ngao, a centre for 46 villages. Church life is busy with regular fellowship cell groups and involvement in community
life. People are very open to hearing the Christian gospel and teaching English is much in demand as, if Thailand joins the AEC (Asian Economic Community), people should have a knowledge of basic English. Coffee Club meet again at Abbot Hall at 10am for coffee on September 23rd before we will learn ‘What the Gideons are doing today’. Everyone welcome.

Grange over Sands NSPCCOn Saturday afternoon, 16th August, an event was held, in the United Reformed Church, entitled “Tea at the Palace”. NSPCC supporters thoroughly enjoyed this successful and social afternoon that had been suggested and organised by Margaret Northcott and Joyce Church with the aid of the NSPCC Grange over Sands Committee. Although the Queen herself had been invited she was unable to come but did send a letter from Buckingham Palace wishing the event went well. However, Rita Laisby did arrive in the guise of the Queen with her two trusty attendants and was given a patriotic welcome!! During the afternoon we enjoyed musical entertainment provided by Victor Hindle, Sue Harrison and Sylvia Trohear. We are most grateful to them all for their hard work in providing such a pleasant afternoon. The competitions that we held were “Guess the Dog and Bone name”, won by Cath Canning; “Best Dressed” won by Angela Nottingham; and “Best Hat” won by Maureen Barratt. The Perfect Beef SteakThere are many different types of Steak, and hundreds of ways to cook them. Everyone will have their own preferences, but we thought we would use our years of experience to impart some Top Tips on buying, cooking and eating the Perfect Beef Steak.Steaks are tasty, quick to cook and versatile, as well as lean, with most of their fat already removed. Using our seam butchery techniques, the gristle and connective tissues are also removed to eliminate plate waste. So, what are the things you should look out for when choosing Steak? Maturation, fat cover and marbling are quality indicators. Traceability tells you where the meat has come from, and at Higginsons, all our Beef is fully traceable, coming from reputable local suppliers. Our Steaks are matured for a minimum of 3 weeks, and are hand-cut by our master butchers, to ensure a great flavour and eating experience. New on the menu this month is our Steak Haché, an authentic, French, course ground Steak with a great flavour. These are served simply in France with French Fries and salad. Or, for something a little different but very tasty, why not try our seasonal ‘Luing’ Guest Beef, produced by A Smith of High House Farm in the Winster Valley. And here are some of Stuarts Top Tips for cooking the Perfect Steak:Remove the Steaks from the fridge at least an hour before cooking and bring to room temperatureSeason both sides with salt and pepper, or a freshly prepared dry rub or marinade. St Paul’s, GrangePrayer for healing has been part of the Church’s ministry since the disciples were sent out in pairs to preach the Good News.
Grange United Reformed ChurchThis month has been quite quiet but there are several events to look forward to in September.
Cartmel Priory ChurchOn Saturday September 27th a concert will be given by Flookburgh Band at 7.30pm.
During the past 100 years, prayer for healing has been re-discovered by churches of all denominations and the Laying on of Hands for Healing was introduced as a regular part of the main morning service at St Paul’s several years ago.
It is offered every three months on the second Sunday of the month and the next Laying on of Hands will take place during the 11 am service on Sunday 14th September when two appointed representatives will be available in the Lady Chapel during the Eucharist for those who wish to come forward to receive this ministry in a confidential
manner. Those coming forward may briefly state their need either for themselves or for someone about whom they are concerned, or they may remain silent. Our healing ministry is for everyone and we welcome all who wish to join us in our services to pray for wholeness and healing either for yourself or for others.
We would like to give our thanks to all those who over the years have hired and used the Parish Hall and to those who have supported our Tuesday coffee mornings. Although the Hall is now closed for lettings, the Parish Office and the clinics will be remaining open with access from the Kent’s
Bank Road entrance, opposite the Co-Op.
Our autumn lunchtime concert in St Paul’s church will be held on Wednesday 10th September. Entitled A Feast of Flute Music, we are delighted to welcome the return, by popular demand, of David Edmonds on flute. David, who was such a success at our autumn concert last year, will be accompanied by Charles Edmondson, and the duo will play a varied and imaginative programme. Lunch will be served from 12 noon and the hour long concert will commence at 1 pm. Admission is £8 to include lunch and is payable at the door.
We have had a mini revival of the Children’s Liturgy, which of course is largely dependent on visitors’ children!
Two priests’ funerals at Preston and Lytham gave
one the opportunity to see one’s fellow priests from other parts of the Diocese – Grange is rather isolated.
A celebration of Mass for the deceased and an hour of silent prayer before the
Blessed Sacrament was a fitting commemoration of the beginning of World War One. A half hour of quiet reflection with the Quakers was a refreshing and uplifting experience; a pleasant change from some verbose religious outings. The book of intercessions in Church has been extensively used in recent weeks – family problems, sickness, anxiety, thanksgiving and joy have been a source of communal prayer each Sunday.
The massacre in Gaza has certainly hit the news and rightly so.
At last, work at the rear of the Presbytery is coming together and all should be tidy by the time of the Parish BBQ – Sunday September 7th after 10:30 Mass – All welcome – entrance fee £5.00 adults and £2.50 children to include a burger or hot dog, salad and a glass of wine or fruit juice – come and see!
The NSPCC gave a marvellous afternoon’s entertainment at the URC Hall. Lovely sandwiches and cakes together with some good singing, hat and dress displays. I thoroughly enjoyed it all – especially the sandwiches and cakes!! Travel safely.
God Bless. Fr P.
PS: I went to buy an ice cream. The guy said “hundreds and thousands?” I said, “lets just start with one!”
St.Charles ChurchWell, there is little to report. Everyone seems to be on holiday. The Men’s Group, The Ladies’ Group, the Sunday Lunch and the Prayer Group are all on hold during August.
The concert will include the first performance of a Joni Mitchell song arrangement by their conductor, John Iveson, for tuba and band. The last movement of Saint Saens Organ Symphony is also expected to be on the programme with Adrian on the organ.Tickets on the door £10 to
include refreshments. Sunday 28th September is the date for our Patronal Festival and Roof Celebration
All three services at 8am, 11am and 6.30pm will be a celebration of our recently restored roof and Patronal saints. Please do join us at one or more of these special services.
The last of this season’s Traveller’s Tales is on September 4th at 7.45pm when Margaret Mellock will give a talk entitled St Petersburg to Shanghai. All are welcome and we thank everyone who has supported these evenings .We are looking forward to our Annual K-Shoes Choir concert with David
Edmonds on Wednesday 17th September at 8pm. This always an enjoyable evening and everyone is welcome. The really special event is our Harvest Weekend with our service on 21st September at 10.30am. This is always much anticipated and enjoyed. All welcome.
Thoughts for ConsiderationThe only limitations to your happiness are the ones you invent and then give energy too. You give energy to the thoughts you want even if they make you unhappy. If you’re feeling fed up, not happy with your life (We’re not talking depression.) a proven idea that does work is to help cheer someone else up. Those who bring joy to the lives of others cannot help but bring it to themselves. It is important that you focus your mind on the thought that, yesterday is but a memory and tomorrow only a vision, but today - well lived - will make every yesterday a memory of joy and every tomorrow a vision of hope; so take care of this day, for in truth, it’s all there is.Future happiness depends on what we do in the present. Whatever true joy there is in this world comes from desiring others to be happy, and whatever suffering there is in this world comes from desiring happiness only for self. So, do all the good you can - by all the means you can - In all the ways you can - In all the places you can - to all the people you can - as long as ever you can. (Charles Wesley)Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending; however, nothing will change if you don’t.
Ethics for a Happy and Contented Life1. Avoid killing anything, as far as you possibly can.
2. Avoid sexual misconduct. This applies especially to adultery.
3. Avoid taking what is not given.
4. Avoid lying. Avoid consciously and intentionally deceiving others.
5. Avoid slander. Slander is the motivation to create divisions
between people or provoke enmity. If it’s false, it’s a lie too.
6. Avoid abuse. In this context abuse is to do with using words as
weapons to wound someone. If the motivation behind your words
is to inflict injury on someone that’s abuse.
7. Avoid idle gossip. This doesn’t refer to casually passing the time
of day chatting with your neighbour, but to speech motivated by
hostility, gossip concerning others, etc.
8. Avoid malice, or ill will. This state of mind is so painful to
experience in others. It’s a terrible thing to wish another person
harm or injury.
9. Avoid avarice, extreme desire and greed. These three are
divined by thoughts of craving for something that belongs to
somebody else. Not wanting them to have it because you want it.
10. Avoid false views. There is a general idea of moral good. The
above is a foundation for such a moral good. For example,
a false view is the belief that our actions are inconsequential
that it doesn’t really matter how we behave because things are
controlled by chance or fate, so we may just as well get by and
have a good time. This is totally false, but people do believe it to
varying degrees. The law of cause and effect states that cause
has results and generally good cause ... bad cause ...

What’s On
Your Red Squirrels need you!
Squirrel activity is at its height in the spring and summer months. The squirrels – reds and greys - are busy breeding, feeding and beginning to expand their territory.
The Westmorland Red Squirrel Society’s volunteers and contractors are equally busy. We’re trapping and despatching greys - more than 1100 so far this year – which is essential if we’re to prevent the spread of the squirrel pox virus that is lethal to reds and reduce the damage that greys do to our woodland trees and bird populations. We’re busy recording red sightings too, including more in the grounds and woodlands of Holker Hall this summer and across the Kent Estuary in Arnside and Silverdale. We’re also attending many of the local shows. This spreads the word about red squirrel conservation and offers visitors and
local people alike the chance to talk to us about what we do. And how delighted we were to be awarded Best Trade Stand at this year’s Cartmel Show! The shows bring new members as well as people who want to assist with the continuing task of grey control. If you missed us at any of this year’s shows and would like to help please get in touch. Call 01539 821714 or 07836 584201. You can also find us on Facebook or go to www.westmorlandredsquirrels.org.uk. And if you see a red, we’d love to hear about that too!Bob Cartwright Secretary Westmorland Red Squirrels
Swifts in the communityThe Grange Natural History Society Swift monitoring team has pinpointed 29 buildings in the town where Swifts have nested this year.
Most just had one pair of Swifts but some had multiple nests. At least 54 nests were occupied in Grange and we think that many successfully fledged young. The top “Des. Res. locally” is Cumbria Grand who hosted ten pairs of Swifts and I hope that visitors to the hotel enjoying the balmy evenings in July appreciated the exciting spectacle of screaming high-speed swift fly-pasts around the flag tower. We suspect
other sites in Grange and are aware of the main ones in Lindale and Allithwaite but will have to wait until next May to complete our survey. So if you would like to join us next spring in helping this enigmatic declining species please contact me through the Grange Natural History Society. If you are not confident about telling a Swift from a Swallow don’t worry as bird identification tuition can be provided. Martin Chadwick
Lindale geological trail‘The place is a geologist’s paradise. You can actually see the fault, where the earth moved, by the church’. Allithwaite Upper Community Plan 2008.
The story of the rocks below Lindale, which determine much of the character of the village, is revealed in the latest addition to the Lindale Heritage Walks leaflets (still available from Grange Now). Based on mapping by the Westmorland Geological Society, sponsored by Cumbria GeoConservation and printed by the Field Studies Council, this leaflet will be of interest to students at Castle Head Field Centre and members of Grange U3A, and to anyone who has wondered how the rocks around Lindale have formed. Written and designed by the same team of Sylvia Woodhead and John Shippen, the leaflet is a lavishly coloured A3 fold out with a geological map, explanations and many photos showing the geological features to be seen on this walk around Lindale.
The leaflet will be available at Grange Now, Grange Tourist Information and Lindale Village Stores, for a modest £2 donation to Cumbria GeoConservation. Sylvia Woodhead

Brown Robin A great season for butterflies and moths this year. Lots of Dark green fritillaries, Common blue, Meadow brown, on the top field and in the valley as well as a newly recorded Ringlet and lots of Six-spot burnet and Chimney sweeper moths too.
If you take the time to look a little closer at moths you will find they are just as colourful and varied as butterflies. I tend to see them as just night Butterflies. They drink nectar and sap and you get to really appreciate them when they are resting during the day as you can get very close. I was walking out of the station and found an impressive Poplar hawk moth recently. My moth trap is up and running and I will be getting our outdoor nature group to come along and see what we have found. The top meadow is to be hay cut this year and the hay spread
over a field which in the past was fertilised, thus poor in wild flowers. However over the years I have noticed more wild flowers popping up here and the phosphate levels are lower now and it is hoped the seed will take and extend the wildflower meadow.Beech “de-limbing”. This happened three times last year where some of our large Beech trees lost large branches in the middle of summer. This is a way of conserving water during prolonged droughts and other trees can do this too such as Ash.Tony Saunders
Bookshelf There is still time for primary school children to complete the Summer Reading Challenge as the final day to return books is Saturday 13th September. Don’t miss out on your medal!
Rhymetime will be starting again with a new day and a new host. Tina will be holding the first one on Wednesday 3rd September at 10am and fortnightly thereafter ie 17th September, 1st & 15th October. Come along with your little ones and join in the fun. Also on 3rd September, we will be having a visit from a representative of Healthwatch Cumbria, from 9.30am to 3.30 pm. They are surveying residents’ experiences with healthcare and social care and would welcome your views on the current provision. We’ve got a busy start to the Autumn with events in September and October:• Poet Geraldine Green will be
returning, after her very popular readings earlier this year, with 5 colleagues to read poems on the theme “Write to Roam” on Thursday 11th September from 2.30 pm.
• On Thursday 18th September we will have “Women’s Voices of The First World War – A Salute to a Generation” with diaries, commentaries and articles read by Maggie Norton, Neil Curry and Peggy Savage. This event also starts at 2.30 pm.
• Local writer Andrew Forster will be reading poems from his newly published book, “Homecoming”, on Thursday 2nd October from 2.30 pm. “Homecoming” explores his settling in Cumbria after 20 years
in Scotland. Andrew has published 2 previous collections and won a Northern Writers’ Award on 2014.
Tickets for all these events are £1 to include refreshments and are available from the Library or can be reserved by phoning 32749.Cartmel Adult Education Centre will be holding an enrolment session in the Library from 9.30 am to 12 noon on Thursday 4th September, or you can ‘post’ your enrolment in their Postbox in the library. We have brochures for Cartmel, Dallam, Kirkby Lonsdale and Ulverston Adult Education Centres available to collect from the Library. The Royal British Legion will be visiting the Library on Saturday 20th September from 10 am to 1 pm to provide advice for all those who are serving, who have served, their carers and dependants. The Cumbria Libraries website now has indexes of soldiers who served in the First World War and who were mentioned on their local newspapers. These include the Westmorland Gazette and the Barrow News. The link is at www.cumbria.gov.uk/libraries/localstudies/newspaper.aspIt may be a little early to mention, but our Charity Christmas Cards will be available to buy from 17th October – plenty of time to write and send out to far-flung family & friends.

School Reports
CPS hosted its third Primary Maths Master Class in JulyFourteen students attended the course from the local Primary Schools of Allithwaite, Flookburgh, Grange and Leven Valley. The students completed a workshop which focused on developing problem solving skills and collaborative group work. A variety of puzzles were attempted from getting the red car out of a traffic jam, balancing all 24 penguins at once on the (very) unstable iceberg, to completing magic squares with numbers, colours and symbols. Well done to Ben, Max, Jacob, Rebecca, Douglas, Tate, Eloise, Isabelle, Benjamin, Owen, Joshua, Gabe, Sam and Cailtin for mastering a variety of tricky problems.
Junior Maths Challenge SuccessFollowing the great success of our students in the UKMT Intermediate Maths challenge earlier this year, our students have again proved strong mathematical ability, this time, at the ‘junior’ level. Selected students from both Year 7 and Year 8 sat the national maths competition in May and between them achieved 1 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze certificates. Over 240,000 students from across the UK sat the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge with roughly the top 6% receiving a gold certificate, the next 13% silver and the next 21% bronze. Well done to all 19 students who took part: Joe R, Henry M, Lydia D, Oliver C, Maddy D, Rachel C, Charlotte M, Felix F, Scott C, Jessica M, William K, Oliver T, Lucas O, Louis C, Adam P, Olivia D, Philippa B, Will W and Toby C. Congratulations to Joe, Henry, Lydia, Oliver C, Maddy, Rachel, Charlotte, Felix, Oliver T, Lucas, Louis and Adam; who all achieved certificates.
Maths success at Cartmel Priory
Lindale CE Primary SchoolWe are looking forward to the new school year at Lindale. We welcome Miss Natacha Bland to our staff. Miss Bland is covering Mrs Law’s maternity leave. We also now will have Mrs Dawson who runs Lindale Pre School Nursery working in school every afternoon. Our Reception and Year 1 class has had a ‘makeover’ over the holidays providing enhanced provision both inside and
outdoors. If you are new to the area, we still have some places available for this school year.Looking back, the summer term ended with a celebration of the year and especially of our leaving Year 6 group. We were so proud of the confident and caring young people that they have become. The SATs results and progress that this group achieved were outstanding, and reflected their hard work and positive attitudes. As an end of school trip, all Year 6 went by train to London. After a day of sightseeing including visiting No 10 Downing Street, they spent the night having a ‘sleep-over’
in the Natural History Museum. The ‘Dinosnores’ programme was an evening of activities followed by camping out under the large diplodocus in the central hall. The following day gave time for some more sightseeing before returning to Lindale. ‘The best trip ever!’ was the general consensus. The end of the school year was also time to say goodbye to two members of staff. Mrs Catherine Bradder retired after over 20 years teaching at the school and Mrs Emma Skeldon also moved on to new things. Our thanks and best wishes were conveyed to them both.
How quickly a summer goes and it’s time to think about getting your classes organised for the autumn months and we have a brilliant selection on offer, right through to July next year. Please note, that taking the final examination and completing coursework for these two courses, is not optional but is integral to us securing funding. We are revamping our website so look out for changes over the next few months, the most recent addition being the languages page. You are able to download all course information sheets from the web and please keep your brochures as they last up to July 2015.I hope that people will continue to support all local classes as it’s only by sufficient enrolments that we manage to run and keep such a rich selection of classes, with people from as far afield as London enrolling as they certainly do not get classes which attract the same levels of subsidies which we enjoy. We all look welcome to hearing from
you and taking your enrolment this September and l hope that you enjoy this academic year. Please remember you can enrol at any time, subject to there being space availability on your chosen class.Jude Godden Community Learning Manager

“I’m reviewing the situation”What a show for Allithwaite C of E School students, who performed Lionel Bart’s ‘Oliver’ as their end of year production. It was incredible how, in just three weeks, the school had managed to put together such an amazing show complete with acting, singing and dancing! The show opened with ‘Food Glorious Food’ and by the
end of it every child in the crowd was singing along, even me! The students are incredibly talented and they deserved their huge round of applause. Also, I was very impressed by the work that both the students and teachers did with both the costumes and the scenography. I have got to say, the beards drawn on the childrens’ faces certainly added that, ‘je ne sais pas’ that the French always talk about.Special thanks must go to all the teachers, St Mary’s Church for
allowing the school to put on the show in its wonderful surroundings, and of course to the parents for all the support they gave.Overall, I must say once again, that the show was incredibly entertaining and I would like to congratulate all the pupils from Allithwaite School. This review was written by Ellen Von Wunster, a sixth form student from Dallam who did her work experience week at Grange Now and attended the show on behalf of the paper.
Dear EditorAn Idea for the Future of Grange-Over-Sands. We live in a world where, for thousands of years, man has rampaged destructively upon the earth - a world dominated by the bad stuff about being humans - money and status. power and greed, aggression and egotism, corruption. This has led to a pile up of major problems for the human race. We need to live in a world dominated by the good stuff about being humans e.g. peace, wisdom, integrity, beauty.I can see a way forward to begin to make this happen. If this town was to become the birthplace of this idea, then there could be considerable economic and cultural benefits. At 78, I wonder whether this is an idea too far. You decide! Please come to an informal meeting for a brief explanation of the idea followed by a discussion. Commodore Inn (upstairs) Wednesday 10th September 7.30 p.m.Colin Mortlock (a new and happy Grange resident). 07508 601874
Dear EditorAt a time when the people at SLDC are looking favourably on housing development proposals - particularly those involving affordable housing - I see from your issue 276 (August) that the people at Cumbria County Council are to withdraw some X6 subsidies and may possibly reduce their funding of the 532 bus service. Could people from these two councils speak to each other and reconcile their views on affordable housing and public transport?Colin Reakes Grange over Sands
Dear EditorI would like to thank everyone who gave a helping hand when I came off my cycle on Meathop Road on Friday, 8th August. You were all very reassuring, as were the ambulance crew and Paramedic, who attended and who I would also like to thank. I was extremely lucky to only come away with a black eye and 2 steri-strips under the chin! I apologise for any inconvenience. A very grateful Judith Thornton of Cockermouth.
Dear EditorA huge, ‘Thank you and Congratulations’ to two local young people, Glen Giffney, pianist, and Grace Heap, singer, for providing us with the most wonderful concert on Friday August 1st.The concert was entitled, ‘From Bach to Bond’, and that is exactly what they treated us to, a selection of varied treats from the old composers to the more modern pieces of theatrical world. These two very talented young people entertained us with such professionalism and charm, with all the moss and tempo changes.Victoria Hall was a full house, a superb accolade to this local, harmonious twosome, who performed beautifully and blessed us with the joy of music in all its various forms. The quality of their music delivery is ‘spot on’ with their dedication and enthusiasm to their art, being totally evident. Both Glen and Grace have been developing their musical skills and talents since they were about 4 years old, within the Grange area. However, Glen and Grace are now moving on, in separate directions, to study music to further their careers but ‘a little bird’ has reassured me that they hope to be performing together again occasionally, in the not too distant future. Wonderful news.So dear Glen and Grace, thank you again, for a splendid concert and we wish you all the very best in your exciting musical careers. Please come back again and share your beautiful piano playing and singing with us here in Grange. We will be waiting! God bless you both in all you do.Barbara and Reg Brown Grange over Sands
Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.
Wills supporting St Mary’s HospiceWe have just proudly presented a cheque for £9,700 to St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston as a result of our Wills4Hospice Campaign. The campaign proved so popular that we had to extend it to get everybody in. We wrote over 100 Wills, which is probably around 200 hours of our time. We did not charge a bean and so every penny went to the Hospice. It was hard work for us all here but when we went to present the cheque, the tea and cakes at the Hospice coffee shop made it all worthwhile.
Why was the campaign so popular? Here is a short quiz. Was it:-
A) Everybody likes to see lawyers do something for nothing for a changeB) People wanted to show their support for the local hospice C) Far too many people in our area do not have a WillD) all of the above
I choose (D) all of the above, St Mary’s Hospice is a charity we all know and love. We can’t do all of our Wills for nothing, but we would be happy to contribute £10 to the Hospice for every Will we do until the end of the year. And you can contribute more if you like. This way, not only will St Mary’s Hospice benefit, you get your wills planning up to date and get sound advice from us on Inheritance tax, cost of care planning, powers of attorney and your finances in general. For every one of the 100 Wills that we made, those clients got full advice from us on all areas that we felt were relevant to them, with a clear letter setting out their options and the cost. Come to see us for an initial chat. That won’t cost you anything. We can advise you on your Will and other planning and you can then go ahead with whichever services you like. We see a lot of clients who did not realise that the planning we suggest was an option for them or was something they can afford. And remember £10 from every Will goes to the Hospice.
