GREETINGS FROM THE DIRECTOR PRES SEZ

I met with the Friends of the Gathering Place at

their May meeting. This group was formerly known as

the Senior Advisory Council. Even

though they are considered a part of

The Gathering Place, they were never

officially designated as such. As they

were operating, they were not under

the umbrella of TGP’s non profit

designation, insurance, raffle license,

or audit certification. There were two choices for them

to make. One was to apply for their own non profit

license, raffle license, insurance and hire their own

auditor. The other was to disband.

When the decision was made to change their name

and status, I immediately appointed them as an ad hoc

committee of the Board of Directors. We will be

changing our bylaws to allow the Friends of the

Gathering Place to become a standing committee of the

board.

There will not be any significant changes in the way

they operate. The chairperson will still be a voting

member of TGP’s Board of Directors. FOTGP can now

use the raffle license of TGP and are officially a non-

profit entity.

The purpose of the Friends of the Gathering Place is to

provide support to TGP through participation,

volunteering, advising, fundraising and promotion of

TGP events. FOTGP are the welcoming face of TGP

and will encourage new people to attend TGP events.

The Friends of the Gathering Place are currently

selling raffle tickets to raise funds to support their

activities.

Our summer activities are in full swing. The fish boil

was held and declared a rousing success. We have

started the Concerts in the Park series and the Wally’s

music festival went well for a first time event. Be sure

to read the Gather ’Round from front to back to see all

the fun and exciting activities that you can take

advantage of this summer.

A committee is currently planning and designing a

float to enter in the annual 4th of July parade here in

Milton. They are hoping to improve on their second

place finish last year. We encourage you to attend the

parade and cheer on TGP’s float.

Gene

True heroes are those who go that extra mile for

someone. Who put their heart and soul into helping

others. True heroes have a “Heart of Gold”.

Unknown

I feel quite proud of the fact that I supervise the most

dedicated staff a Senior Activity Center can have. Often

they work independently using their

expertise and experience to guide

them through day to day trials and

tribulations. Ultimately, we work

together as a team for the greater good

of TGP. In the end, I feel we make an

impact on those we support.

There are times when one or all of us step up and go

above and beyond day to day responsibilities. Then

there’s John. The other day Sandi Ploszaj shared with

me a conversation she had with a woman who used to

frequent TGP before she moved to Madison. The

woman asked, “Is that guy with the bib overalls still

working there?” She added, “You know, the guy that

was so nice to everybody and would do anything for

you.” We all know that wouldn’t be me, so she must

have been referencing you know who.

On Friday, June 3, John and members of his family

coordinated our 2nd annual Fish Boil. John could be

seen stoking the flames as fish, potatoes, carrots and

onions were cooked over an open flame in a cast iron

cauldron. He was also the person who ignited the flame

for the famous “Boil Over”. Later he helped serve the

meal and was the last man standing putting away tables

and chairs long after the rest of us had departed.

The following Monday John coordinated a crew of

volunteers, including myself, as we built up the south

garden wall and extended it an additional 12 feet.

None of this would have been possible if John hadn’t

gone to Menards on Sunday night to pick up gravel, fill

sand and cement blocks. Long after the volunteer crew

dispersed, John could be seen working independently

layering and leveling blocks, using skills he had acquired

growing up in a family of builders. His knowledge and

ability to coordinate and complete such a project was a

tremendous savings for us. I know our gardeners were

quite pleased with the outcome of the construction

project. Check out John’s handiwork next time you are

out walking in the gardens.

Healthy Eating, Healthy Living Eating alone? Finding it difficult to prepare a healthy meal? There is a solution. The Rock County Council on Aging (COA) provides tasty, nutritious meals on a donation basis for anyone 60 years or better regardless of income. There are two ways to enjoy a healthy meal. The dining center which is located at the Gathering Place, 715 Campus Street, Milton, offers lunch Monday through Friday. More than just a well-balanced meal, fun and friendship are part of each daily menu. Advance registrations are required for the dining center and must be made no later than noon of the prior business day. For those who are homebound, the meals can be delivered. The volunteer drivers make a personal connection and check on the well-being of those who receive meals. While the suggested donation per meal for the dining center is $3.25 and $3.65 for home delivered meals, a donation of any amount is appreciated.

To make reservations for the dining center call TGP or for more information as to home delivered meals, please call the COA Nutrition Program at 757-5474.

Directors report continued from page 2 On Tuesday morning TGP’s float committee convened

as plans were made for the 4th of July Parade. John is a

member of that committee. He and Gene Wenham are

the design and construction crew that work under the

tutelage of the float committee. This year’s float requires

unique detailing so make sure to look for it in the front

half of this year’s parade.

Thursday morning John was preparing for our first

concert in the park. The grill had to be cleaned, signs

had to be posted and the power source for our musical

guests had to be checked. These small behind the scenes

details were essential to the success of the concert. Oh, I

forgot to mention that John ran to Piggly Wiggly that

morning to pick up the hamburgers, hotdogs and buns

for our guests that evening. John did not attend the

concert but his efforts were felt by all who did.

On Friday, John was called upon to help set up tents and

shelters at Schilberg Park for Wally’s Music Fest.

Imagine assembling large tents with poles and canvasses

scattered everywhere with no instructions in 90 degree

heat. He did it without complaint and wouldn’t even

break for lunch until the last tent was erected.

Within a week, John had coordinated the most

important facet of our second annual Fish Boil

fundraiser, built an extension on our garden wall,

assisted with the design of our 4th of July parade float,

readied the essentials for our concert in the park and

assembled several tents used at Wally’s Music Fest. Is it

any wonder why our members, neighbors and friends of

TGP recognize John as the man who never sits? In

Fishermen’s terms, “We’ve got a keeper”.

M OVIES FRIENDS...

Movie of the Month 2

Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens Thirty years after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, the

galaxy faces a new

threat from the evil

Kylo Ren (Adam

Driver) and the

First Order. When

a defector named

Finn crash-lands on

a desert planet, he meets Rey (Daisy Ridley), a tough

scavenger whose droid contains a top-secret map.

Together, the young duo joins forces with Han Solo

(Harrison Ford) to make sure the Resistance receives

the intelligence concerning the whereabouts of Luke

Skywalker (Mark Hamill), the last of the Jedi Knights.

This is a Science Fiction movie rated PG-13. It runs for

2 hours and 15 minutes. It will be shown on our 60”

TV on Thursday, July 21 at 1:15 pm. There is no charge,

but a donation is appreciated for popcorn and beverages.

Movie of the Month

Where to Invade Next Filmmaker Michael Moore visits various countries to

examine how Europeans

view work, education,

health care, sex, equality,

and other issues. From caf-

eteria food to sex educa-

tion, Moore looks at the

benefits of schooling in

France, Finland and Slovenia. In Italy, he marvels at

how workers enjoy reasonable hours and generous va-

cation time. In Portugal, Moore notes the effects of the

decriminalization of drugs. Through his travels, we dis-

cover just how different America is from the rest of the

world. This is a very interesting documentary about

how other countries approach their citizens. This DVD

is on loan from Sue and Larry Davis. It is rated R

(language, brief nudity). It runs for 2 hours. It will be

shown on our 60” TV on Tuesday, July 12 at 1:15 pm.

There is no charge, but a donation is appreciated for popcorn

and beverages.

C LUBS , CLASSES , MEET INGS , ETC

Creative Coloring For Adults Join the Creative Coloring Craze! The Gathering Place has an Adult Coloring Book

Group and it is growing by leaps and bounds! One of the latest trends in stress relief

doesn't come in a prescription bottle. Coloring books for adults are hot, hot, hot right

now! We’ve seen multiple studies that show that sitting down with colored pencils/pens

and an intricate design are soothing and will reduce your stress levels and stimulates brain

areas related to motor skills. Whether it takes you back to your childhood or just takes

your mind off your problems, it’s a great way to spend a couple of hours. Our group will

be meeting July 7,13,22 and 25 at 1:00 p.m. Please bring your own coloring book and pencils/pens to use. There

is no charge. For more information contact: Sue Eckert, Program Coordinator at 608-868-3500.

Stained Glass Class Caroline Britton is instructing a Stained Glass Class on

Thursday, July 14 and Friday, July

15. The classes will start at 1:00 p.m.

each day and go until 3:30 p.m. You

will need to bring a pair of scissors,

old towels, pencils and markers. If

you have a soldering iron and safety

glasses please bring those also. Caroline will have

everything else. The cost for the two day class is $15

payable to the instructor at the first class. Be sure to

sign up at the reception desk.

Quilting Club Join the Quilting Club at The Gathering Place! They will meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:00

p.m. in the craft room. The group will meet on Tuesdays, July 12 and 26. Bring your portable sewing machine or

any hand work you want to work on. We would love to have you join us.

Rag Ruggers The Rag Ruggers group will continue to meet on

Wednesdays from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Bring your

current project or start a new one. Nance and Fran will

be there to help you along. If you are new to this

group you do need to call the reception desk and sign

up. They will be able to tell you the cost and give you a

list of supplies you need to bring the first time.

Paper Crafting Need a fun craft to do on Monday

mornings? Check out the paper crafters

at 9:00 a.m. This is a diverse group of

people with quiet a variety of paper

crafts. Everyone is welcome to bring in

their current project and work with the

group. No instructor, just friends to help

out. Some of the projects they like to

work on are; scrapbooking, card making,

paper flowers, origami, paper boxes, etc. You’re always

welcome to just stop in.

July Book Club This month on Thursday, July 28 at 1:00 p.m. the

Book Club will be discussing the

book: The Broken Teaglass by Emi-

ly Arsenault. In Arsenault's

quirky, arresting debut, two

young lexicographers find clues

to an old murder case hidden in the files at their dic-

tionary company. Billy, the narrator, is a “strapping”

recent grad with a football player's physique, a pen-

chant for philosophy and a painful chapter in his past

that he hasn't quite closed. Mona is a girls' college

grad. The two are drawn together by tantalizing clues

left—they assume by a former employee—in the compa-

ny's citation files. They realize the murder may involve

colleagues and acquaintances who are still roaming

around the office.
