  • Grand Forks is an attractive valley town with tree-lined streets, named for its location near the convergence of Kettle and Granby Rivers. The town is overlooked by Observation Mountain to the north and Rattlesnake Mountain to the east. Grand Forks is the fastest growing town in the Kootenays.

    The City of Grand Forks is bordered on its easterly boundary by the Granby River and on its southerly boundary by the Kettle River. These two rivers converge in the middle of town and carry on south as the Kettle River,

    ultimately to empty in to the Columbia River. The rivers add a great deal to the peaceful, ambient charm of the community. Both rivers are sprinkled with small sandy beaches and great swimming holes enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.

  • Stroll down Grand Forks main street and you will nd modern day ammenities mixed with the history of of Beautiful British Columbia. The unique attraction of Grand Forks lies not only in its natural beauty but also in the interesting and rich past of the area.

    Incorporated in 1897, Grand Forks boasts many preserved structures-heritage homes along residential streets and period buildings in the downtown core. Some of the red brick buildings built by the Doukhobor in the early 1900s are still scattered throughout the farmlands of West Grand Forks.

  • In the early part of the 20th Century, Grand Forks became the Mining and Smelting Center of BC, home to the largest non-ferrous copper smelter in the British Empire (2nd largest in the world).

    The agriculture industry had also contributed substantially to the economy as Grand Forks produced approximately one third of the apple crops in BC and was recognized for the nineteen different varieties of potatoes grown throughout the valley.

    Canadian Paci c Railway established a divisional and terminal point in Grand Forks, having ve railways and two transcontinental lines. Today,

    forestry is the largest industry sector, with agriculture, mining and tourism diversifying the economy.The abandoned Canadian Paci c Railway was turned into the Trans Canada Trail in 2000 and Grand Forks is proudly a Gateway Community to TrailsBC and the Trans Canada Trail, a haven for Mountain-Biking, Horse Back riding, hiking with easy 2% Grades. More Mountain-Biking and adventure recreation can be found in the neighbouring Phoenix Interpretive Forest.
