With more than 1.5 million annual visits, the Grand Park sports campus is a key part of an overall strategy to make Westfield a premier destination for youth sports and families. Westfield has been named one of the “Top Ten Places to Raise a Family” by Family Circle Magazine and has consistently been recognized as one of Money Magazine’s “Best Places to Live.” We certainly agree.

While you’re in Westfield, we encourage you to visit our downtown just minutes away. Here, you’ll find great local restaurants, pubs and shops to fill your free time with a unique Westfield experience. You can also enjoy our award-winning trails and parks system, too.

Learn more about our schools, local shops, trails system and downtown by visiting WestfieldWelcome.com. Feel free to download our City of Westfield and Grand Park apps (available in iTunes and Google Play) to learn more as well.

Thank you again for visiting Grand Park and the Westfield community. We hope you’ll be back often.

Sincerely,

Andy CookMayor

estfield’s Grand Park Sports Campus is a force to be reckoned with in the world

of youth travel sports. But a passion for sports and love of the game is nothing new to this small community ten minutes north of Indianapolis.

Following a seven-and-a-half year career in professional baseball, Chris Estep founded Roundtripper Academy, a baseball training facility. Estep played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Montreal Expos and was also named an All-American at the University of Kentucky. Classes at Roundtripper include baseball, kickball and wiffle ball. The training academy also offers Tiny Tots, which teaches pre-kindergarteners basic skills of running bases, throwing, catching and hitting off a batting tee.

Westfield’s sports tradition can also be seen in the community based Westfield Youth Sports, Inc. WYSI was organized to promote amateur youth sports within the Westfield Washington School District and Hamilton County through local, national and international competitions. WYSI offers opportunities to compete in baseball, basketball, cheer, cross country, football, lacrosse, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. The organization is overseen by a board of directors from the community who live and breathe Westfield sports.

Grand Park continues this tradition into the contemporary era. Aside from travel sports, a large number of local youth athletes also use the fields on a regular basis. Last year, 1,438 local kids participated in baseball, softball, football and lacrosse through Westfield Youth Sports (WYSI) and 1,100 local kids played soccer at Grand Park through Indiana Fire Juniors. In the spring of 2016, Westfield Youth Soccer Association (WYSA) will move its recreational soccer program to the newly added recreational fields, which will give an additional 1,500 local youth the opportunity to play at Grand Park.

These numbers contribute not only to Westfield’s success, but to the region

of Central Indiana as a whole. In 2015 the park saw 1.5 million visits, which contributed $148 million to the local economy. It is also the official practice turf for the Indy Eleven, Indiana’s professional soccer team.

Indeed, the development and growth of Grand Park was the next logical step as the Indy area continues to capitalize on its dominance in the sports tourism industry. While visitors travel to Grand Park for tournaments and showcases, they also can tour the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Lucas Oil Stadium, Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Victory Field, NCAA Hall of Champions and Hoosier Park Racing and Casino.

magine a time when farms dominated the landscape of Westfield.

Bill Wood began farming in Westfield in 1941, on land just south of 191st Street and West of US 31. Over the years the Wood farm grew to include roughly 500 acres, producing corn, grain and livestock.

Bill saw the transition from draft horse power to tractor power, the introduction of hybrid seed corn, herbicides, advanced tilling practices, and the transition from single-row corn pickers to harvesters capable of gathering six to eight rows at a time.

“To witness that and be a part of that is pretty amazing and significant,” says Bill’s son, Craig.

Craig Wood joined the family farm after graduating from Purdue with a degree in agriculture in 1978.

“Yes, there were some other things I probably could’ve done,” Wood says, “but it’s been a good life for us.”

About 20 years ago developers began eyeing Westfield as the next major housing market.

After 8 or 10 different builders had approached the family with proposals,

A FARMER’S LEGACYthe family began thinking about how their land could serve a larger goal than simply another housing addition or shopping center.

“We knew whatever was going to go in, it should be something pretty significant because that was going to be our family’s legacy.”

When they learned about Grand Park, the Wood family offered to sell their land for the nearly 400-acre youth sports campus.

“I get a little emotional thinking about it,” Craig says. “The day

before the groundbreaking, I walked around that ground because I knew it was going to change.”

Craig and his wife, Sandy, still run a small farming operation on the remaining farm land near Grand Park selling mostly freezer beef and pork. The two met in what Wood describes as a “fairy tale story”: during a choir tour of Western Europe. She was a “city girl from Colorado,” Craig says, but when she moved to the farm, “she caught on pretty quick.”

GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION

JULY 21-23, 2016

Page 16: Grand Park Fan Guide

Looking for a little swim time? Check out The Waterpark at the Monon Community Center. Special day passes are available which include the Center exercise facilities.

Enjoy a leisurely bike ride up and down the Monon Greenway or any of our 175 miles of trails through Carmel. Didnʼt bring your bikes? No problem. Carmel Cyclery rents bikes or look for one of our nine Zagster bike stations, where you can rent bikes for short periods of time. Itʼs easy, you just use your cell phone to download the App and let Zagster do the rest.

Along the way, donʼt forget to stop at Bub’s Burgers and Ice Cream or Bazbeaux Pizza for lunch, where you can watch the action on the Monon Trail from your table. Just steps off the Trail, check out Silver in the City for some very unique gifts or The Foolery for the serious comic book lover in your life. Nearby, Matt the Miller’s and Langton’s at Carmel City Center also offer family-friendly dining.
