How Rubbermaid Fits into Grainger’s Safety Story: Injuries

Slips and Falls are the leading cause of Workers Compensation claims

Floors & Flooring Materials contribute directly to >$2MM fall injuries annually

85% of Workers Compensation Claims are attributed to employees slipping on “slick” floors

22% of slip & fall incidents resulted in >31 days away from work for each injured worker

65% of all lost workdays are due to slip/fall accidents

Slips and Falls account for > 1MM hospital ER visits annually

How Rubbermaid Fits in Grainger’s Safety Story: Productivity

According to OSHA, finding solutions to problems posed by ergonomic hazards may be the most significant workplace safety and health issue of the 1990’s.

Dr. J. Donald Miller, retired Director of NIOSH, “by any epidemiological criteria, occupational musculoskeletal injuries represent a pandemic problem in the United States with gigantic effects on the quality of millions of lives.”

Repetitive Motion or Cumulative Trauma Disorders represent almost ½ of all occupational injuries reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics

Ergonomic Disorders are the most rapidly growing category of OSHA recordable injuries and illnesses

It is estimated that medical workers’ comp. costs of ergonomic disorders exceed $100 Billion annually

How to help customers understand the Ergonomics ROI

Margins are tight so there has to be a compelling financial justification for any kind of investment, including ergonomics.

Especially during an economic downturn, “Investments” in ergonomics and productivity that provide long-term cost benefit make much more

sense than “Expenses” that “would be nice”.

Ergonomics investments can help AVOID citations, accidents, incidents, injury & death, turnover, environmental impact, damaged

facilities and equipment plus all their associated costs

Ergonomic investments can help GAIN productivity, employee morale, efficient utilization of equipment and all their associated financial

benefits.

According to renowned ergonomics consultants, Humantech, depending on your company, you will usually gain benefits in at least

one of the following areas: Productivity, Workers’ Compensation costs, Quality, Absenteeism and turnover

Page 15: Grainger and Rubbermaid Safety Story - Amazon S3 · 2. Poor drainage (pipes & drains) 3. Damaged, Warped, buckled or uneven flooring surfaces 4. Outdoor walking surface irregularities

15

How can RCP help?

• ROI Justification Difficult to

“dollarize” Ergonomic Benefits short-term but we can help with Productivity Enhancement and Sustainability benefits

• Samples for Evaluation Understand need to ensure any solutions work for you in your operation

Page 16: Grainger and Rubbermaid Safety Story - Amazon S3 · 2. Poor drainage (pipes & drains) 3. Damaged, Warped, buckled or uneven flooring surfaces 4. Outdoor walking surface irregularities

16

7 Step Ergonomics Plan per NIOSH: Reducing Risk

1. Look for signs of potential Musculoskeletal problems in the workplace such as frequent complaints of aches and pains or job tasks that require repetitive forceful exertions

2. Show management commitment to addressing possible problems and encouraging employee involvement in problem solving.

3. Training to expand Management and Workers’ abilities to recognize and evaluate potential musculoskeletal problems

4. Gathering data, to ID jobs, tasks or work conditions that are most problematic using sources such as injury & illness logs, medical records/insurance info, and job analyses

5. ID & Implement specific controls for tasks that pose a risk of musculoskeletal injury and follow up to ensure the problems were adequately addressed.

6. Establish or Delegate Healthcare management to emphasize the importance of early detection and treatment

7. Minimize Risk Factors when planning new work processes and operations; costs less to build into original design than to re-design or retrofit later
