Overview

The Freedom Area School District Graduation Project is a culmination of many different activities and artifacts that align with the district’s core values. The process will begin when students enter the high school their freshman year. Students will collect artifacts throughout their high school experience. Using their artifacts and experiences, students will be able to measure their growth as they progress throughout their high school career. At the end of their junior year, students will start completing activities that help prepare them for life after high school, contribute to the improvement of the community around them, and gain a deeper understanding of the local governance in their own neighborhood. Students will be allowed to select their teacher advisor, but their selection will be based on a first-come-first serve basis. Students who participate in the work release program will be assigned an advisor that is a guidance counselor or an administrator. Throughout the school year, students are required to meet with their advisor on designated dates (See the Required Dates for Graduation Project Page)

during Personalized Learning Time (PLT). Advisors will measure student progress and guide them throughout the completion of their project. At the conclusion of their senior year, students will submit their portfolio and present their Graduation Project to a committee of Freedom Area Educators. In order for a student to receive a passing score, they must receive a 70% or higher on both the portfolio and presentation. If a student fails to complete a section of the project or has artifacts missing, the project will be deemed incomplete. If a student receives an incomplete or doesn’t achieve a passing score, they will have an opportunity to make the proper adjustments and present to District Administrators prior to graduation. After earning a passing score on their Graduation Project, students will receive 1 Credit, in accordance with the District’s Graduation Requirements. Students who receive a passing score on their Graduation Project will receive a “Pass” on their transcript, while students who earn a passing score on their Graduation Project and the Self-Development Pathway will receive a “Pass With Distinction” on their transcript.

Section 1: Service: Regulations Explanation

Community service projects are planned, organized, voluntary efforts designed to address a problem or need in the community. To be meaningful, community service projects must address a real need or problem found within the community. Option A: Community Service The community service project that a student chooses to do should reflect his/her personal interests and skills. Students are required to perform a minimum of 20 volunteer hours with a non-profit organization. A maximum of 10 hours may be earned through school-based activities. Students shall not be paid for their services, cannot be court-ordered to complete those services, and cannot be a part of their required National Honors Society hours. Students may also choose to perform community service for a member of the community (who cannot be a relative). Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the project site. Option B: Fundraiser Students may choose to complete a fundraiser that targets a minimum of $250 for a chosen charity in place of volunteer hours. Fundraisers that do not meet the $250 donation will be graded on sliding scale. Fundraisers should be coordinated completely by the student from start to finish. Student will be responsible to show evidence of project completion through the budget process documentation template. All proposals for the community service project must be submitted on Google Classroom prior to starting the project and approved by a high school principal before the student may begin working and logging hours. This part of the graduation project may be completed at any time after your proposal has been approved. The principal will approve or deny the proposal. You are required to submit a new proposal if your first one is denied. Both service options require completion of thank you letter(s) to be sent to the individuals for whom the service was completed. A suggested template for the thank you letters is included in Google Classroom and at the end of the Appendix of this packet. Copies of the thank you letters are required for the portfolio. The form for both Option A & B has been assigned to you on Google Classroom. The last date to submit this proposal form is October 30, 2019. You will receive feedback through Google Classroom as to the approval status of your proposal.

Section 3: Career Pathway: Option A - Financial Aid Information/Scholarships

The high school guidance department can assist you with questions regarding this process. The guidance secretary coordinates all private scholarship applications. The guidance page of Freedom’s website will always have the current list of scholarships available.

Free Application for federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

● This is a free, federal application that ALL families must complete online https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa

● Virtually all colleges, universities, professional schools and trade schools require a FAFSA to be completed. The FAFSA is filed as soon as possible after January 1st of the student’s senior year in high school.

● To complete the FAFSA, parents and students must have their income (taxes) information available from the previous year. The information gathered by the FAFSA is processed by a set formula and a student’s “Expected Family Contribution (EFC)” is determined.

● Parents and students should go to www.pin.ed.gov to receive a pin number. The FAFSA must be signed – by creating a PIN number, parents and students can sign the application electronically. If you have questions or need help completing the FAFSA, try these sources:

○ Financial Aid office of the school you will attend ○ PHEAA office in Pittsburgh : 724-831-7317(Wendy Dunlap) ○ High School Guidance Counselor: 724-775-7400

● *Important* - The FAFSA also serves as your application of Federal and Pennsylvania State Grants ● Freedom Area High School will hold an informational financial aid meeting on the evening of

October 16, 2019 that students must attend. Grant, Loan & Scholarship Information:

● Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is a great resource for information about State Grants, Loans, Scholarships and Work-study programs.

● A representative from PHEAA provides a financial aid presentation on October 16, 2019 in Freedom Area High School Auditorium.

● For Option A in the career section, you are required to apply for at least two scholarships and show evidence of this process in your portfolio.

● Scholarships are funds awarded that do not have to be paid back. ● Scholarships are most commonly based upon academic merit and often require an essay to be composed. ● Your best chance for a scholarship will be from the college or career school you attend. ● NEVER pay for a scholarship application or scholarship service. Many FREE scholarship searches are

available on the internet. ○ Meritaid.com ○ EducationPlanner.org - provides a free scholarship search, a variety of worksheets, calculators, and

a financial award analyzer. ○ Fastweb.com ○ Scholarships.com

Section 5: Self-Development Pathway

Students may choose a project that enriches their personal education and development. The chosen project should encourage lifelong learning and personal growth. These could be within a field that they may pursue after their secondary education or other area of self-interest. The Self-Development Pathway can be extremely diverse in its options, but there must be careful consideration in choosing a project that will provide experiences that benefit the student’s desire for lifelong learning. Students should carefully choose mentors in this pathway that can guide their specific pursuits and goals due to the varied skills necessary to complete the projects. The verification of the self-development project will be individualized based on each project. Students should consider the project to be a continual work in progress, and should provide documentation, photos, or other evidence of the process at each step of the way, in achieving their end goal. Self-development projects might include, but are not limited to:

● Achieving growth and/or mastery in a skill or area of interest (ex. Martial arts, athletic training/competitions, EMT certification, lifestyle changes, learning a musical instrument etc.)

● Authoring an article in an academic journal or trade publication on a topic for which students have researched and developed a strong understanding

● Visiting and learning from a mentor in an interested career field or area of study based on student interest.

*Note: Projects that involve physical fitness or nutritional changes for a student must have a credentialed professional attached, preferably as the student’s mentor. For instance, a student who trains for and runs a marathon for her project needs to work with a certified personal trainer, throughout the process, to ensure proper training techniques. If a student wants a healthier lifestyle, a certified nutritionist and certified physical trainer should be involved in developing a plan of action. These experts should also be involved in the documentation of the process.

Section 5: Self Development Pathway: Final Reflection

Each project would require a 3-5 page reflection on what you learned during your project. Verification will come in many forms for these types of projects. A self-development project is most often a process. Please be prepared to show documentation of the process, as well as the end goal. When in doubt, document everything! Final Reflection Layout: Introduction · Describe the project · Share the rationale behind the project · Share your goal(s) in attempting the project Body · Describe in detail each step of your project from beginning to end · Share positive and negative components of the project · Share any adjustments you made during the project · Describe the final outcome · Describe what you learned and how you were changed from doing this project Closing · Share the most rewarding part(s) of this project · Share what you may have done differently · Share what you will do going forward with what you completed

You should briefly highlight your top qualities and state that you are an excellent fit for the position that you are applying for (clarify which position you are applying for). State that you will contact the employer on a certain date to arrange for an appointment to further discuss your qualifications with the employer in person (you should actually follow up!).
