Graduation December 2020 Faculty of Arts and Education
Yindyamarra Winhanganha
“...the wisdom of respectfully knowing how to live well in a world worth living in.”
Welcome On behalf of the Charles Sturt University community, it is my pleasure to invite you to celebrate this momentous occasion.
Graduation is an important milestone that marks the completion of your current studies and the beginning of a new chapter in your lives.
Your paths may be varied as you go on to take first jobs, promotions, research, perhaps another degree... but you all share something special. You are now lifelong members of the Charles Sturt University family.
As Australia’s largest regional university, we are proud of the continuing contributions our graduates make to communities and the world around them. You too are ready to make your mark on this world.
I encourage you all to take forward the ethos of Charles Sturt University as you embark on your future endeavours – and apply the wisdom of respectfully knowing how to live well in a world worth living in.
Dr Michele Allan
Chancellor
Our ethos
Yindyamarra Winhanganha. This is a Wiradjuri phrase meaning ‘the wisdom of respectfully knowing how to live well in a world worth living in’. It’s at the heart of everything we stand for here at Charles Sturt University.
It’s the reason we strive to create a world worth living in. It ties us to the traditional Indigenous Australians whose land we are fortunate and proud to share, and to the diverse communities across Australia that we serve. It is also the driving force behind what we teach to, share with and learn from our students.
And it embodies the mission of our university, which is to develop and spread insight and knowledge in order to create a better future – through expanding educational opportunities, delivering exemplary career-focused courses and enabling original research. Because we believe in making a difference.
Yindyamarra Winhanganha

Our historyOur ethos, Yindyamarra Winhanganha, has been part of the Charles Sturt University narrative from the very start. Our history dates back more than 125 years, to the establishment in 1895 of a vocational farm at Bathurst designed to give rural people access to skills and education.
Over subsequent decades, agricultural and teaching centres were set up in Wagga Wagga and Bathurst, disseminating knowledge so individuals could improve their prospects and better serve their communities.
Charles Sturt University officially became a university in 1989, merging the former Mitchell College of Advanced Education and the Riverina-Murray Institute of Higher Education, and incorporating educational facilities at Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst and Wagga Wagga.
Since then we have continued to grow, and now give students from across Australia and the world access to quality university education.
Today we have campuses in Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange, Port Macquarie and Wagga Wagga. We also have Charles Sturt University Study Centres in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney as well as study locations in Canberra, Goulburn, Manly, Parramatta and Wangaratta.
The man from whom the university takes its name – Charles Napier Sturt – was a British soldier who sailed to the colony of New South Wales in 1827 to pursue
his passion for exploration.
Our delivery of world-class online education is informed by more than 50 years of experience in distance learning. The majority of our degrees can now be studied online.
We have unique partnerships with a wide variety of organisations, including TAFE providers, the NSW Police Force, the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn, the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, Commercial Radio Australia, the Islamic Sciences & Research Academy of Australia, and universities in China and Sri Lanka.
We also have many partners around the world, enabling our students to undertake international study experiences, further expanding their horizons.

Roslyn Lee COXPreparing for the challenges of paracrisis in an online world: A case
study
This thesis explores the emerging concept of paracrisis; a
vulnerability for reputationally damaging events for organisations
courtesy of digital platforms which can be used as tools or weapons
for anyone with a smart phone. This research presents a model of
paracrisis, explores the online immunisation paracrisis, and offers
considerations for professional communicators designing strategies
and utilising online platforms to communicate.
Doctor of Philosophy
James Edward CLOUTMANTowards a new model in employability development for mature age
professionals
Graduate employability has recently emerged as a topic of
considerable focus. However, relatively little attention has been
paid to the employability of older employees, aged 45-64. This
thesis (re)defines individual employability and offers a self-directed
learning model. Its value lies in providing a reflection space on
what the employability agenda aims to achieve while providing a
model for individual workers and educators to use for employability
development.
Dominique Jade BAINESThe Spectrum of Sound: Keyboard Instruments & Women in
Seventeenth-Century Dutch Painting
Art history since the Renaissance can be described as ‘ocularcentric’,
or driven by vision alone. However, the modes of sound, silence,
noise, hearing and listening are all depicted within seventeenth-
century Dutch genre paintings of women with keyboard instruments.
This thesis interpreted these sources on a spectrum of sound. This
innovation contributed to perception studies in art interpretation to
challenge how these pictures - and mottoes - convey information.

Toddlers with cleft palate: Enhancing communication through holistic
child- and family-centred practice
This research investigated speech pathology practice to support
toddlers with cleft palate from the perspectives of 6 experts from 4
countries and 7 Australian families. Experts focused on impairments
in body structure and function; families described both the joys and
complexities of raising toddlers with cleft palate across the contexts
of their lives. Findings highlight the need to shift from the medical
model of practice towards holistic family-centred care.
Wilson Worthington DOBUDExperiences of Adventure Therapy: A Narrative Inquiry
Will’s research is the most substantial international exploration into
individuals’ experience of Adventure Therapy, including participants
and practitioners of outdoor programs. Findings reveal that
success is helped by the privileging of the democratic therapeutic
relationship, and the avoidance of unethical practice in pursuit of
program recognition. Will’s research invites practitioners to reflect on
the ethics and effectiveness of their outdoor therapy services.

Lincoln Dwen GILLTeacher Education Students’ Use of ICTs in Teaching and
Learning on Professional Placement: Investigating Influences and
Development Within the Activity Systems of University and Schools
This study investigated teacher education students’ use of ICTs in
teaching and learning on professional placement. Applying Cultural
Historical Activity Theory enabled the study to identify and explain an
interdependence between the preparation program and schools for
the TES’ development of practice, and other major influences on use
such as classroom practices, school student responses, technical
and psychological tools, and a range of causal processes.
Sarah Louise HAYTONDifferent Sides of the Same Coin? Cyberbullying and the Positive
Uses of Social Networking: Examining Perspective from Culturally
Diverse Youth
This research investigated how culturally-diverse Australian youth
comprehend their lived experiences of cyberbullying when using
social networking applications. Interpretative Phenomenological
Analysis revealed differences in how Aboriginal, migrant and Anglo-
Saxon youth variously defined, experienced and responded to
cyberbullying. Results provide critical insights for adopting a youth-
centred approach to future cyberbullying policy and education
programs.
Paul Anthony KLOPPENBORGThe scholarly activity of Higher Education lecturers in TAFE and the
role of the TAFE library
Higher education is a relatively new and small part of Technical
and Further Education in Victoria. HE lecturers are required to
demonstrate scholarship yet TAFE libraries are set up to support
vocational training. The research explores lecturers’ scholarship and
how TAFE libraries support it. Results demonstrate that libraries are
not resourced to support scholarship and the emergence of HE
in TAFE has had a positive influence on expanding collections and
services.
Daniel Charles LANDERHistorical arguments and the narrative mode in vaccination objection communication: A critical discourse analysis of Facebook comments
Refusal of vaccination is a global problem, and research suggests current strategies to end such resistance are ineffective. This thesis explores how improved communication might increase acceptance of vaccination. It contains detailed analysis of arguments and language used by vaccination objectors on Facebook and explores new communication approaches for responding. Findings are relevant to both vaccination policy and wider science communication.
Nicole Anne MCGILLWait-Lifting: Active waiting for speech and language services by children and families
This four-phase international research explored stakeholders’ perspectives and solutions about waiting for speech and language services. Waiting was both active and passive and had negative
consequences. A randomised controlled trial with 97 families found that using a purpose-built website to support waiting had similar outcomes to a control group. Evidence-based solutions are needed to reimagine service provision and promote timely, equitable access to services.
Elisabeth Helen MILLERThe relational self in therapeutic relationship and the imago
Dei: Towards an integrated psychotherapeutic and theological
understanding of transformational healing and change in the
process of psychotherapy
This thesis examines the relationship between therapist and client
in psychotherapy. It integrates knowledge from psychotherapeutic
literature, experienced Christian therapists and theology. The findings
highlight the significance of the biblical concept of the human
being made in the image of God (imago Dei) for understanding the
transformative power of therapeutic relationship which arises from
the dynamic unfolding and emerging identity of the self.
Khali Victor MOFUOAStakeholder Corporate Social Responsibility in the Light of an African Moral Theory
The thesis evaluates ethically stakeholder corporate social responsibility (CSR), the view that business organisations have a duty to aid a variety of people such as workers, consumers, the poor and others. Up to now stakeholder CSR had been based on the dominant Western utilitarian and Kantian moral philosophies. In contrast, this thesis grounds a new kind of stakeholder CSR on African values, and argues that it should at least supplement, if not supplant, them.
Steven Paul MURPHYPractices Contributing to High STEM Performance in Rural Victorian Secondary Schools
This study showed that despite isolation and under-resourcing, some rural Victorian schools succeed in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. Contributors to STEM success were investigated at four schools. STEM teachers worked as self-reliant teams, used community relationships and resources to deliver rich lessons, and held high learning expectations while giving students extensive support, providing a model for other rural schools.
Danielle Elizabeth TREWEEKThe End of Singleness? Towards a Theological Retrieval of
Singleness for the Contemporary Christian Church
Using Scriptural exegesis and historical theology, this thesis
reformulates an account of being single. It finds that the single life
has teleological purposes and ends that accord to it inherent dignity
and meaning, as opposed to cultural narratives of deficiency, defect
or even deviancy. Rediscovery of the critical significance of the
single Christian life is found to enrich each unmarried individual, the
Church as a whole, and wider society.

Kelly-Ann TRIBOLETThe Provision of Movement Experiences in Australian Early Childhood Curriculum: Examining Educators’ Practices and Children’s Participation in Physically Active Play
This research explored the complexities of how educators incorporate physical activity and Fundamental Movement Skills into the preschool curriculum. An in-depth analysis of outdoor environments, children’s play and educators’ practices in three early childhood centres highlighted the role of educators’ personal beliefs, leadership by the centre director, and the organisational culture of the centre in promoting children’s engagement in physically active play.

Tammy O’Connor admits she is one of those rare and lucky people who knew early on how she wanted to make a real and lasting impact on this world.
“I studied a Bachelor of Nursing at Charles Sturt University and I knew as soon as I started that I wanted to become a midwife. To me it seemed like such an awesome career.
“After graduating I worked as a registered nurse and quickly enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery at Charles Sturt while working in the maternity unit as a student midwife. The uni gave me a great platform to learn in a safe environment, and provided a good stepping stone into my career. That’s why, in 2016, I completed a Master of Midwifery through Charles Sturt University. It opened the door to those higher level positions, including my current role as a clinical midwifery consultant for the Western NSW Local Health District.
“The beauty of nursing and midwifery is it can take you anywhere.”
Tammy’s ‘anywhere’ turned out to be parts of NSW which rarely received the health and educational support services they required. Realising women in remote areas needed access to antenatal and postnatal care, Tammy has been instrumental in implementing an outreach maternity program.
“I believe it’s a basic human right for women to access a midwife during their pregnancy, regardless of their location. Working and living regionally provides me with the opportunity to work within the primary health care model of midwifery. It’s what I love!”
Courtney Glazebrook is creating new beginnings by treasuring the past. Passionate about Indigenous education, she is driven to make a difference in the lives of young Aboriginal children by giving them the best start to their educational journey. As the director of Towri Multifunctional Aboriginal Children’s Service, each day, when she opens the Towri doors, Courtney makes practical progress in her quest to cultivate a strong, connected and inclusive community.
“Towri encompasses health, education, community engagement and family support. Early childhood care has such great flow-on effects for families. While we’re providing care for children we’re also building platforms for parents, giving them the opportunity for employment and better health. We are building the capacity of whole communities. When children thrive so do communities.
“I have the opportunity to create tangible change. What we do, what we teach and what we advocate for directly impacts upon the community and everyone in it. I have learned, through my Charles Sturt University studies and through my career, to question different regimes of truth.
“Aboriginal people are strong. We are connected. We are progressive. And at Towri we are creating new beginnings for those who come through. That really excites me.”

Chandan Rauniyar has long been fascinated by the power of computing and the impact it can have on people’s lives.
“I have always been amazed by computers and what complex software could do. I was interested in software development and it seemed like such an awesome career – being able to develop complex computer software that is capable of transforming lives.
“So I decided to study a Bachelor of Information Technology at the Charles Sturt University Study Centre in Melbourne. I majored in software development, learning about the principles of data structures, and database design, as well as the ethics and security issues around computing. ”
With a little help from the Study Centre team, Chandan was able to step into his career at the cutting edge of software development with confidence.
“After graduating, I managed to secure a scholarship for Study Centre Melbourne’s Internship Program. With help from the careers team, I got selected as an intern at an IT company in Melbourne. As an intern, I was able to apply and develop my skills in the context of a small business. This invaluable industry experience helped me in then landing my first job as a software developer in a multinational company.”

“I want people to know the unprecedented worth of my scholarship. It went beyond monetary value. It saved my mental health. I was able to concentrate on the important things and not stress one little bit about money.
“Uni is a tough gig. Juggling course requirements and placements, a social life, a couple of jobs and the everlasting battle with Centrelink (which can become more than a little tricky at times). But with the support of Charles Sturt donors and supporters, a huge amount of that burden has been lifted from our shoulders.
“I believe that our gratitude should not only be shown with an offer of thanks, but by the way we carry ourselves through our university career – and in our actual career that will follow. Through our scholarships we’ve been given the opportunity to make the absolute best of our university experience.”
Dav Francis, Bachelor of Paramedicine student
