How to select the best gifts for grads(StatePoint) Graduation celebrates one of life’s major accomplishments. It also celebrates independence, which is often eagerly anticipated -- albeit a bit scary. As a result, most people are tempted to give gift cards to recent graduates to alleviate fears over upcoming expenses both after high school and college. But there are many practical and meaningful gifts you can get your grads that they’ll both appreciate and remember for years to come.
These ideas can help you make meaning-ful selections:
High School graduatesThey’re college-bound and they need great items to outfit their new dorm room. Con-sider gifts for high school graduates that are functional, decorative and let them put their personal flair on their new space. For example, a sweatshirt blanket in their new school’s color, customized with collegiate letters, is both practical and a great way to show college pride, and colorful mono-grammed wall art makes for great dorm room decor.
For parents, encourage them to come home once in a while with a monogrammed duffle bag, perfect for a weekend trip back to the homestead to get a great meal and some clean clothes.
Don’t forget friends. Whether sepa-rated by campuses or majors, reminders of friendship like specially created play lists or framed pictures of the two of you will remind them of good times with good friends.
Customized subscription boxes can help you create fun, monthly care packages of beauty supplies, candy, snacks or books. Both practical and eagerly anticipated, monthly subscriptions make truly thought-ful gifts for students on a budget.
College graduatesThe right gifts for college graduates will start them off in style, and help them sur-vive the sometimes intimidating world of “adulting.”
Embroidered lunch totes, personalized portfolios and monogrammed desk acces-sories will help new college grads navigate the corporate world in style, while main-taining dibs on their stuff.
If their future professional life involves a lot of travel, consider sophisticated gifts like personalized luggage tags and passport covers.
Remember, a new graduate deserves both sentiment and support when moving on to the next big thing. With a little thought, your gift can offer both.

Gifts that help new grads personalize their work-space can be stylish and thoughtful.

As they parade across stage, certificate and commemorative bible in hand, it is evident that this exemplary group of Pre-K graduates has come a long way. JLU Child Care currently serves more than 140 students ages 6 weeks to 5 years. JLU’s Pre-K Plus program exceeds UPK standards and includes Spanish, sign language, art appreciation and formal music instruction in addition to a strong faith formation component. This year’s graduating Pre-K class with 33 students is by far its largest. The JLU Pre-K Plus program readies children for kindergarten while giving them the best possible start to life.
Our students benefit from extended time, loving classrooms and planned assessment. For more information on the JLU program call 352-0017 or go to www.JLUChildCare.com.

College-bound students: How to get ready for the next four years (StatePoint) Many college-bound students and their families underestimate the cost of college. Indeed, 31 percent of students who left school without completing a degree reported they did so due to financial rea-sons, according to recent National Center for Education statistics.
Beyond rising tuition rates, there are many expenses to consider -- books, class materials, room and board, cell phone plans and incidentals -- to name a few.
With nationwide student debt at $1.3 tril-lion and growing, according to the National Student Loan Debt Clock, the importance of financial planning and establishing good money habits can’t be overstated.
Students can more confidently take on college and beyond with these helpful tips:
Paying for collegeThe first step all students should take toward funding college is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Then, use free resources to in-vestigate other funding. Some of the best scholarships can be found on sites like tuitionfundingsources.com, the largest database of scholarships in the US.
It’s also helpful to know how much money you’ll need. Most school websites offer a net price calculator that can help you arrive at a realistic estimate.
If necessary, look into Federal Direct PLUS loans, which can cover up to 100 percent of remaining education-related costs.
Cost-saving opportunities exist whereby students can consolidate loans or refinance into loans with a lower interest rate. These actions can help students significantly re-duce costs associated with their debt.
With all funding sources, it’s critical to be aware of application deadlines and the terms associated with assistance, whether it’s GPA maintenance for scholarship eligi-bility or an interest rate.
Managing moneyFor many students, college is an opportu-nity to manage money for the first time. Fortunately, students today have financial planning tools that previous generations did not enjoy.
Young people can leverage their technol-ogy confidence to manage money by signing up for mobile banking and then setting up account alerts to avoid over-drafting. Online budgeting and expenditure-track-ing tools can help students form sound financial habits and monitor savings.
Building creditGood credit gives you more financial free-dom and choices down the road. Start build-ing good credit while you’re still in school. Pay bills on time, don’t open too many lines of credit and keep balances low. Whenever possible, pay more than the minimum each month. Check your credit history often.
Are you ready for college? Preparation is about more than test-taking and achieving solid grades - it also means preparing finan-cially for the next four years and beyond.

Creative gifts for grads this season(StatePoint) Shopping for a new gradu-ate? Skip the gift card - this old standard is great, but you’ll want your gift to stand out. Here are ideas to consider:
DIY food funIs your grad a foodie? Rather than indulg-ing in one shared meal out on the town, consider giving a gift that keeps on giving. These days, amateur foodies are taking certain things into their own hands - they are pickling their own vegetables, brewing their own craft beers and even creating their own hot sauces. Specialty kits are fun
and offer all the knowledge and supplies necessary to get started.
Better movie nightsBeef up a home theater system with the latest tech gear. A portable projector that doesn’t require a mercury lamp is a fun and versatile present for anyone that loves to host movie and video game nights or sports-viewing parties.
This season, go beyond the standard gift items you know everyone else is giving. Get creative in your effort to find something useful and cool.
