May, 2020 GRADUATING SENIORS Congratulations District 4-H High
School Graduates, Class of 2020! We know this
has been a hard year for you. We are proud how you have
persevered and continue to
live by the 4-H motto “To Make the Best Better!”
Congratulations!
THE POWER IS IN YOUR HANDS We know lots of things are going on
and it is sometimes hard to keep up. It is your responsibility to
be sure to read the emails, newsletters, and anything else that
comes your way. During this time, things may change fairly quickly.
Be sure to check your email and the District 4-H Blog regularly and
watch for and READ messages from the Extension Office and your Club
Organizational Leaders.
CENTRAL KANSAS DISTRICT 4-H BLOG We have a blog! This is where
you can find up-to-date information. Instead of sending out email,
after email, after email, we will be posting up-to-date information
here. You can sub-scribe or “follow” the blog to receive
notifications when a new post is made. I’d encourage you to
bookmark the Central Kansas District 4-H Blog -
http://ckd4-h.blogspot.com/ - and visit it frequently for
updates!
CLUB MEETINGS Your organizational leaders have all received
individual links for your club to be able to con-duct virtual club
meetings using zoom. Watch for communication from your
organizational leader for the link for your upcoming club
meeting.
Note: DO NOT post the zoom links publicly anywhere! These are
only to be sent via email or text or CLOSED Facebook group. This
will prevent uninvited people from joining the meeting.
IN-PERSON ACTIVITIES Despite the Governor’s action to let the
state-at-home order expire, there is still no face-to-face (or
in-person) Extension programming activities or contact with our
par-ticipants through July 4. This date has yet to be extended or
changed. Therefore, no club meetings, project meetings, or
activities can occur in-person or face-to-face. However, virtual
opportunities are recommended and encouraged.

***ATTENTION ALL 4-H’ERS & PARENTS – ADD/DROP
INFORMATION***
There are several responsibilities as a 4-H member and a 4-H
parent. One of these responsibilities is the Adding and Dropping of
4-H Projects. It is YOUR responsibility to add or drop any projects
by May 1, 11:59 p.m. You will need to do this by going to
https://ks.4honline.com and log into your account. After May 1, the
system will not allow you to add or drop projects. Remember, 4-H
members must be enrolled in the project area(s) they will be
exhibiting at the county fair. If you have any questions, do not
hesitate to contact either Extension Office.
VIRTUAL OFFICE HOURS FOR SARAH AND KATE While we can be reached
during regular office hours by phone and email, Kate and Sarah have
set aside specific times during the week for virtual office hours.
This is meant for individuals to make an appointment during the
designated hours for a virtual meeting. Please do not hesitate to
reach out. These hours will be posted weekly on our Facebook Page
(Central Kansas District 4-H) and at
https://www.centralkansas.k-state.edu/4-h/.
OZ-SOME 4-H CAMP CONNECTION Since we cannot go to Rock Springs
4-H Ranch for 4-H Camp, we are offering the Oz-Some 4-H Camp
Connection to 4-H members ages 8-13 years of age (before January
1). This camp connection will be held on June 16-18 (Tuesday -
Thursday), 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. each evening. There are some
aspects of camp we know are important: counselors, connecting with
other campers, learning experiences, campfire, 4-H dance, etc. We
are planning on a fun and interactive three evenings! Each
participant will receive a camp care box in the mail, which will
include a t-shirt, craft supplies, and other items needed for most
all activities.
It will be important if each camper could have their own
electronic device with a webcam to be able to interact with other
campers and counselors. However, if you have more than one youth in
your household that will need to share a device, we will do our
best to accommodate.
The cost to the participant will be $5 and will need to be paid
online after submitting the registration. Other funding is being
sought out to offset the remainder of the cost. All who register
are asked to submit a 4-H Council Scholarship Application (see
procedure below).
Registration will be due no later than Sunday, May 10. To
register, click here, or go to our website under Upcoming Events
and Online Registration for the link.
4-H COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS We have summer events
coming up, and we are continuing to plan for them. The temporary
method for handling 4-H Council Scholarship Applications is as
follows:
• Go to the District 4-H Website and complete the application
which can be found under 4-H Member Forms and Documents – 4-H
Council Scholarship Application.
• 4-H Member is to contact the Organizational Leader and ask
them to email Kate their “approval” which will count as their
signature, THEN
• Mail application (without Organizational Leader signature),
preferably to the Salina Office (2218 Scanlan Ave, Salina, KS
67401), OR
• Email application to Kate ([email protected])
VIRTUAL 4-H ON FACEBOOK For fun, check out our Virtual 4-H
sessions on Facebook (Central Kansas District 4-H)! Each weekday,
we are providing fun activities at 1:30 p.m. If you can't watch
live, the videos are available on our Facebook page at your
convenience. Be sure to share these fun 4-H opportunities with
friends and family!

UPDATE ON AWARD APPLICATIONS & RECORD BOOKS During these
uncertain times, we are continuing to look at the various
requirements for year end awards. The Trips & Awards Committee
has met and here are some things they want you to be aware of: FILL
IN ALL THE BLANKS on the applications. Do not leave any
incomplete. In general, if a required item is not met due to
COVID-19, the committee will
take each application on a case by case basis. However, the
committee would encourage you to get creative and complete an
appeal, if need be, in September.
If an in-person County Fair is not able to happen, know that a
Virtual 4-H Fair will. Therefore, any item on the Club Summary or
Pin Application referring to County Fair will change to mean the
Virtual 4-H Fair.
Pin Application If you were scheduled to participate in the
Gavel Games, Model Meetings, and
Quiz Bowl contests on January 18 and were not able to
participate due to the rescheduled date, the committee encourages
you to complete the appeal process.
Those registered to attend NELE can count it since it was
cancelled due to bad weather. Those who were SCHEDULED to
participate in Regional 4-H Club Day can count it. #3 – If you
haven’t already had your club tour, we encourage Clubs to consider
a virtual tour. If a virtual
tour is not possible, club leaders should contact Sarah for the
alternative option. #7 - If a club is unable to have a club
fundraiser due to COVID-19, the club can substitute the club
fundraiser pin requirement with a revised club budget. The
revised club budget should be discussed and voted on in a regular
club business meeting, detailing the change in the lack of
additional funds from the cancelled fundraiser and how the budgeted
items are revised to reflect the loss of income for the current
year.
#16 – Instead of requiring 2 state events, for 2019-2020 only,
the requirement will be 1 state event. Record Books Revised record
book items are still coming for our juniors and intermediates. The
timeline changed due to
COVID-19. Know that we will get this information out as soon as
we can. Watch for an email with details.

OLD 4-H PHOTOGRAPHS GATHERING DUST? The 4-H Photography Judging
Committee needs photos still on the mount boards to use for judging
contests. If you want to donate those old photos so they can help
4-H members judge photos; bring them to the Extension Office so
they can be used again. Right now, they can only be accepted at the
Salina Extension Office and can be left in the box between the two
front doors. We ask that you remove any ribbons and front
photography label at the bottom of the photo mount. The photo can
still be in the clear plastic bags. The committee thanks you for
your donation to help us make our photography judging teams
great.
TRI-RIVERS FAIR INFORMATION FOR ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERS
4-H BUILDING MONITORS Please read instructions carefully, as
there are changes this year!
It is hard to believe that the fair is just around the corner.
So…let’s start planning early for the fair...it’s Pop Stand /
Concession Stand time!!! Join the team...get involved! Please make
sure your club signs up for working the Pop Stand and also to serve
as Building Monitors. Clubs may sign up as many times as they want.
Clubs with over 20 members are asked to work the Pop Stand at least
two to three times! Any time slots not filled will result in the
Pop Stand / Concession Stand being closed during that time at the
fair. All clubs should also plan to sign up for at least one shift
as Building Monitors, and clubs with over 20 members are encouraged
to sign up for 2 shifts as Building Monitors.
When recruiting your club members, please keep the following in
mind. The Pop Stand operates smoothly with at least one adult and
two or three youth. However, during the time frame of 10 a.m. to 2
p.m., we would like at least two adults and four youth. We will be
serving food from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. (on Wednesday through Saturday)
and set up will begin at 10 a.m.
For "guarding" the 4-H Building as Building Monitors, clubs are
asked to sign up in addition to Pop Stand shifts. Wanted: at least
3 individuals for each shift.
Organizational Leaders were sent the link on 4/13/2020 to sign
up for your club's desired times. If Leaders have any questions or
need the link resent, please call the Salina Extension Office at
785-309-5850 or you can email Michele at [email protected]. Thank
you!
ATTENTION 4-H FAMILIES & ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERS: CENTRAL
KANSAS DISTRICT POLICY The Central Kansas Extension Board adopted a
policy to go alongside the Kansas 4-H Policy regarding fundraising
at the February, 2014, Board Meeting. The policy is:
“4-H members MAY NOT solicit funds to help fund their individual
4-H projects. 4-H members may fundraise for a specific 4-H
EDUCATIONAL trip. Donations given directly to a 4-H member ARE NOT
tax deductible because they do not go to a 4-H club or group. Any
fundraising programs by clubs or individuals MUST be approved by
the 4-H Youth Development Agent; the funds must be used to further
the 4-H mission; the account procedures must be appropriate and in
accordance with the POLICY; and the 4-H name and emblem must be
properly used.” Any fundraising done in the name of 4-H needs to be
approved by Sarah.

Summer is Fast Approaching
Dear 4-H Families,
While these are unprecedented times, it allows us to reflect. We
are encouraged to look at things differently. While the summer will
soon be upon us and the 4-H year has seemed to go by quickly, we
know our opportunities this summer have been changing. Despite us
not being able to meet in-person, this summer is still jam packed
full of opportunities for 4-H members. Be sure to take ad-vantage
of the fun things going on.
County fair information will be coming out via email and mail.
Be sure to stay on top of the pre-entry deadlines, read through the
fair paper to make sure you know the rules and requirements, and
don’t forget to have fun during this learning process! If you have
questions, please be sure to ask the organizational leaders and/or
call or email the Extension Office. We are here to help!
Have a great May!
Sarah
