Australian universities offer a variety of graduate programs, from international relationsand law to media studies and health sciences. There are two types of master’s degrees:

Entry RequirementsHow to Apply to a Program in Australia 

Applying Directly:

Once you have selected a program, you will be able to download an

application from the university's website. You will need to submit the

application and all documentation as well as apply for your visa. The

application procedure is relatively straightforward but you may find it

different than applying to universities in Canada or the US.

Applying Through a Program Provider:You can also apply to Australian universities through their North

American program providers. They offer a free service to full degree

students that helps you with the application process, visas and pre

departure information.

When to Apply to a Program in AustraliaUniversities tend to have a rolling admissions process for international

students, although some programs have specific deadlines like medicin

or visual arts, so be sure to check with your institution.

It is recommended you apply:

• In October for a February (first term) start date

• In March for a July (second term) start date

Master’s by Coursework

Similar to the twoyear North American master’s degree,

the Australian master’s by coursework:

• Involves a program of classes in a major field ofstudy

• Typically incorporates a research project or

dissertation

• Is one or two years of fulltime study

• Grants a Master’s Degree (MA, MSC, MBA, LLM,

MED)

Master’s by Research 

The master’s by research degree is for students who are

looking to enter a doctoral program and Master’s by

Research:

• Involves intensive, self directed research leading to a

thesis or major research project

• Generally is a path to further research in a doctoral

program

• Is one or two years of fulltime study

• Grants a Master’s of Philosophy (MPhil)

Entry requirements vary betweenuniversities and even betweenprograms at the same university.

Before applying, you will need tocontact the university’s internationaloffice about specific entryrequirements for your course of study.

Generally speaking, the minimumqualifications US students will needare:

• Four year bachelors degree orequivalent work and studyexperience

• Minimum GPA of "B"

• GRE usually not required• GMAT usually required for MBA

programs

Generally speaking, Canadian studentswill need:

• Four year bachelors degree(honours) or equivalent workand study experience

• Minimum GPA of "B"

You can obtain your professional degreein Australia in areas such as medicine,teaching, law, veterinary medicine andbusiness, among others.

Master’s of Business Administration

Obtaining your MBA in Australia is a great way to learn

business practices from an international perspective.

• Blend of theoretical and practical knowledge

• One to two years of fulltime study

• Admission requirements may include GMAT, work

experience, references and interview

• Several Australian universities offer ACCSB

accredited MBA programs

Medical Degrees

If you already have a bachelor’s degree, you can apply for

graduate entry into the Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of

Surgery (MBBS) degree program.

• Involves program of classes and clinical work

placements

• Four years of fulltime study

• Highly competitive, as places for international

students are limited

• MCAT or GAMSAT required

• Apply through the Graduate Medical Admissions

Veterinary Medicine

Veterinary Science degrees earned from Australia open

• Offered as an undergraduate degree 

• Can generally be completed in 5 years

• Some universities are accredited by the AVMA 

Law Degrees

Studying law in Australia offers students many

professional opportunities. Programs often combine law

degrees with other arts or sciences degrees.

• Offered as both an undergraduate and graduate

degree

• Internationally recognised as a professional

degree. But, students are advised to contact their

state or provincial bar association for information

on degree transferability.

• Bachelor’s degree is required for entry intograduate law programs

• Focus on developing logical reasoning, creative

problem solving and effective communication

Teacher Education

Teachers around the world are familiar with the leading

• Graduate Diploma of Education (Grad Dip Ed) and

Financial Aid for Study in Australia 

It’s possible to take Stafford and PLUS loans with you to most Australian institutions. Many Australian universities participa

in the US Federal Government loan programs. Visit the US Department of Education website at studentaid.ed.gov and clic

on the "Funding" tab for further information on US student loans.

The Canadian Student Loan Program provides Canadian students with funding to study in Canada or at designated interna

tional institutions. For more information visit www.hrsdc.gc.ca. Canada Student Loans are available for fulltime and part

time study at designated schools. Provincial or territorial students assistance

may also provide financial assistance. In addition, some limited sources of

support for Canadians studying abroad are available directly

through Canadian institutions.
