Grade Categories
Categories and weights are pre‐set per DISD guidelines. You can find a copy of category and weight guidelines in the Employee Handbook which can be found on the DISD Human Resource page.
Categories and Weights Options When you click on the Categories icon in GradeSpeed, you will notice that the Category and Weight is entered and grayed out. The district has pre‐set these and they cannot be changed. You can assign a color to each category and you can change number of grades to drop per category. Click Update when changes have been made.
Set the number of low grades – up to 3 – that can be dropped for the category
Colors will be visible in the Grades screen once assignments have been added
Dropped Grades: The total number of grades dropped from all categories cannot exceed the maximum grades to drop for each student. If the maximum grades to drop for each student is set to 0, then no grades will be dropped from any category, regardless of the value in the # to drop field for each category. If a category has been set to drop a low grade and there is only one grade entered in that category the computer will drop the only grade entered.
Leslie Taylor, Denton ISD
2008 GradeSpeed: Elementary and Secondary
Other Options There are other options in the Categories screen. These are located below the Category, Weight and # to be Dropped columns.
Hide Spanish Category Names
At this time, DISD is not set up to include Spanish so it is marked “Yes”. If this feature changes, you will be notified.
Maximum Grades to Drop for Each Student Maximum number is 3. If you have set the # to drop for a category, you must put a number here or no grades will be dropped.
Make Category Properties Identical for All Classes in This Group Any classes that are grouped together with the class number can share course properties as well as assignments.
Method of Weighting Grades This has been pre‐set by the district. Student Advantage
The Student's Advantage method drops the grades that, considering the total points and weight of the assignment, results in the highest possible average for the student. For example, if a student's average is 89, and his two lowest grades are a 70 in a category weighted at 10% and a 75 in a category weighted at 50%, the Student's Advantage method would drop the 75 in order to cause the least reduction in the student's average.
Total Points Logic Total Points Logic allows you to enter a raw score for assignments with something other than a “100” as points possible. For example, if a teacher enters a 24 for an assignment worth 27 points, the 24 would calculate out to an 89.
