ADORATION

Saint Bernadine of Siena: famous reformer, eloquent preacher, traveled throughout Italy; encouraged devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus; known for use of monogram, IHS; patron of advertisers, advertising.

Saint Christopher Magallanes and Companions: 21 priests, 2 laymen lost their lives for association with Cristero uprising which opposed anti -Catholic Mexican government in 1920s. Motto “Long live Christ the King and the Virgin of Guadalupe!”

Saint Rita of Cascia: born in Umbria, Italy; lived with brutal husband, had two sons. After murder of husband, urged forgiveness; becoming Augustinian nun, spent some forty years in prayer, contemplation, service to sick and poor. Patron saint of desperate situations.

MISSIONARIES OF MERCY

Paul’s back! After last week’s “violent abuse,” opponents organized a lynch mob that beat Paul

nearly to death. But call Paul the “energizing evangelist,” transforming deadly cruelty into life-giving

zeal. Paul’s past courage should inspire our commitment; Revelation’s future “new heaven, new

earth” should inspire our optimism. But Revelation’s present assurance, “Behold, God’s dwelling is

with the human race,” should challenge us to become “missionaries of mercy.” Because Pope Fran-

cis declared that the Church’s credibility is completely dependent on our showing unconditional

mercy. Mercy, said Francis, makes the Church, the world, and everyone young again, reawakened

to life’s noblest virtues. Fittingly, in today’s Gospel Jesus reinforces that theme: “This is how all will

know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Paul and Barnabas reported how God had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles (Acts 14:21-27). Psalm — I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God (Psalm 145). Second Reading — God’s dwelling is with the human race (Revelation 21:1-5a). Gospel — This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:31-33a, 34-35).

Q. Are there any saints in Heaven whose names we do not know?

A. We can know it when the Church canonizes them, and thus gives proof that they were great spiritual heroes in the service of God.

The lazy days of summer can be a great time to bring your family closer to God and each other.

Try ideas like these to have a happy, holy summer: PRACTICE A NEW VIRTUE. For example, fortitude can

be practiced by setting a family exercise goal and working toward it together. Temperance can be

strengthened by limiting time spent watching television or playing video games.

VISIT THE KING. Go to weekly Mass; it is an important way to bring your family closer

to God. Consider going to some daily Masses, too. Then you will get extra helpings

of grace. MAKE SUNDAY SPECIAL. Make Sunday all about God and family by avoiding

activities you cannot do together. After mass, eat together, play outside together,

go visiting together. Defer chores to another day. LEARN A NEW DEVOTION. Pray the

Rosary, novenas, chaplets, and more. Ask you priest for suggestions.
