Grade 5 - Field Trip to Haria Food products

They observed the process and production of toffees,

packaging, storing and how it is transported. They

asked questions related to all the factors related to

economic activity. It was a very enriching learning

experience for them. They were able to relate all that

they had learned in the classroom, with the real

world, which was the factory. They were assessed on

the questionnaire ,after they returned from the trip,

in order to check their interpretation, understanding

and retention of all that they observed. They enjoyed

it immensely.

Grade five visited the Haria Food Products factory on Friday 28th August, as part of the

UOI economic activity. The children carried a questionnaire based on the factory.

t is said, “Fortune favors the bold” and

this saying holds true. For, on the 27

Aug 2015, my classmates and I and took a

daring leap from the wooden chair of failure

to the golden throne of success. It took quite a

few fatigue-filled weeks to organize this grand

programme. It was a golden opportunity for

me to test my patience because the

excitement was overwhelming. I was hardly

able to contain myself for the big day.

A few days prior to the programme, we started filling

up the class room with charts and decorative objects.

We plastered the walls with drapes and colorful

duppattas. We hung streamers on the entrance to the

room which fluttered in the morning air. We arranged

the chairs and tables and were elegantly arranged for

the event. We sent out invites to teachers, the

coordinator, the vice principal and the principal.

up gorgeously and we plunked ourselves

reluctantly on the chairs and anxiously waited for

the teachers to arrive. We tried to represent

south Indian, Punjabi, Bengali, Maharashtra

culture through products, ornaments, cloth food

and sweets, CHOLE BHATURE, PANEER TIKKA,

ROSE SHARBAT, VADA PAAV, SEV PURI,

FLAVORED BREAD, GULAAB JAMUN, LADDOO,

PEDA, IDLI, DOSA AND SAMBAR, I served the idly

thoroughly and wish that many more would such

activities would be conducted in all the subjects.

MYP W e from Grade 8 had organized a French Carnival to raise funds for Service as Action. Our

main aim was to showcase France. We had two food stalls and a section for the monuments in France.

One was Patisserie (cake shop) and the other one was Boulangerie (Bakery). We also had a lot of

French branded products on display. From home we brought a variety of cakes and brought from

home different types of breads. We sold them for reasonable prices to the teachers and students of the

school. Our Vice Principal, Ms. Sagareeka Bhatia guided us throughout and helped us organize this

event. Overall, this was a great learning and enjoyable

experience.

GO YHACKATHON

W e students from Grades 6 to 10 gathered in the auditorium for a high energy format called Yhackathon! All of us were curious and excited to know about what this event was aimed at. After a brief introduction by Yhackathon team, we understood that being enterprising is a way of life and can be applied in any sphere of life or occupation. We were segregated into teams and had to solve puzzles in a particular time limit and earn Yupees (the currency of this program). We found this really interesting and would want to participate in the other sessions as well!

We had been given an opportunity which allowed us to put our thinking caps for teamwork. The very interesting aspect of the activity was that it was teaching us about business at the same time. The next step in this journey is to sign up for YHub and enjoy developing Business Sense with Social Consciousness by creating our own simulated companies and exciting products or services. I hope to put my business skills to use in real life. - SRIYA SRIVASTAVA

FRIENDSHIP

Friendship is one great treasure

it can go to an extent where you cannot measure.

A relationship like this denies silly promises and persuasion,

and they're the few people who accept silence over a conversation.

I have a comrade who helps me all the time,

Sorry; he won't be yours because he is mine!

Friendship is rare

so, please take care...

My friend always keeps my secrets,

whether they are good or bad.

I will always trust him and make sure he is glad!

I pity, if you don't have a friend like mine.

I promise myself that our friendship will always shine!

MYP-IBDP Then, Mr. Duke Getonto, handed over to the mike to

Ms.Meera Rangarajan, In charge- Service as Action to

welcome, Ms Veera Rao, Director, ALERT INDIA and

her team. She explained about ALERT INDIA

(Association for Leprosy Education, Rehabilitation

and Treatment-India) a voluntary charitable

organization, which started its work over 3 decades

ago with a vision to eradicate leprosy from our

country.

This age old disease still lingers around in our cities and villages largely due to

ignorance and social myths that add to the fear and stigma that surround leprosy. One

of ALERT-INDIA's missions is to improve scientific knowledge and bring concepts of

quality and sustainability as guiding principles to national leprosy control efforts.

Our Management Representative,

Dr Arundhati Hoskeri called upon

Ms Veera Rao, Director of ALERT

INDIA on stage. Ms Veera thanked

us all for our kindness and said that

a short movie that was to be shown

would speak enough about ALERT

INDIA and its work!

From her talk we understood that leprosy is caused by mycobacterium leprae bacillius and is largely due to

poverty and ignorance. We even came to know that INDIA shares 58% of the Global Leprosy Buren in 2012- WHO

(World Health Organization). In the short movie, celebrities and doctors gave us detailed information about the

disease and how can it be cured. “This is one challenge I cannot take on alone… Join the ALERT campaign

against Leprosy. “Do not fear leprosy- treat it”-Sachin Tendulkar.

19

Month 2015-16

We clapped for the commendable work this organization is doing for the people affected with leprosy! In fact, we agreed that leprosy is only a myth and can be cured if detected early! Prevention is better than cure!

Dr. Arundhati Hoskeri presented Dr. Veera Rao with a thank you card exclusively designed by Ms. Kadambari Koli Tandel, our art faculty and Home Remedies, a book which has been authored by Dr Arundhathi Hoskeri herself. The ALERT INDIA team members distributed ALERT INDIA leaflets to all of us.

Our Vice Principal Ms. Sagareeka Bhatia proposed the vote of thanks. Overall, it was a very informative assembly and we went back with the truth that, a Healthy lifestyle is important! This is indeed a day to be remembered, and forever!

On 27 Aug 2015, students from Grade

10 and DP 1 went to M/s., Maldar Barrels Private

Limited in Panvel, marked for a factory visit. We were

of a factory while also witnessing a number of processes on

how barrels and drums are

MYP-IBDP

VISIT TO MALDAR BARRELS PRIVATE LIMITED

We first had a small meeting with Mr. Haresh Dharmani,

the owner, who briefed us about the factory and the

manufacturing process. He also provided us their office

documents, which spoke volumes about his company. This

gave us an idea of the company’s paperwork and how legal

documents for a private limited company are important. We

learned about the steps for making barrels and were told

about the clients and their orders.

There are not many steps to make the barrels; nevertheless it

is a very interesting process. The steps are listed below.

1. Metal sheets are cut into the required length for making

the barrels.

2. They are taken into the rolling machine and rolled into

the shape of cylinder.

3. They are the ends are glued together into form a shape of

a cylinder.

4. Then it is taken to the cleaning sector, and a chemical is

rubbed all over the barrel.

5. Then, these barrels are taken to the painting department.

6. The last step is to seal the barrels according to the type of

material they contain.

We look forward in earnest for such trips.
