Grade 3 Week 31 Remote Lesson: Cherish the Earth Lesson Overview: This week in science students will learn about the balance of predators and prey in a food web and how humans can impact this balance. Students will design a solution to protect a species. Vocabulary: • Keystone species • Balance Part One Watch this video about a boy and the sea star: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1ined9107zme8ki/StarfishStory.mp4?dl=0 • What do you think the lesson of this story is? • What are some small steps you can take or already take to help the environment? Part Two Check out this video of your PS Science Instructor talking about predators/prey in a food web: https://www.dropbox.com/s/i9bnow1lcgyx4xd/331CherishTheEarth.mp4?dl=0 As global citizens, we have the job of protecting the Earth. This is the only planet we have to live on. In a lot of situations, the Earth takes care of itself as long as humans don’t interfere too much. There are keystone species like the otter, and the owl, that help keep the balance in their food webs, and prevent other populations from overgrowing and negatively affecting the ecosystem. When deforestation, pollution, or other human influences affect the keystone species, the rest of the ecosystem suffers too.
