Introduction

Page 5: Gracheva l1

• Today more than 5.6 billion people are using the Earth’s natural resources. In every corner of the world people are cutting forests, digging out minerals, eroding earth, polluting air and water, destroying natural areas faster than ever before in the history of life on the Earth.

• Many experts think that we will soon begin to see a breakdown of the ecological systems that support life on the Earth. It is a gloomy picture, isn’t it?

• So we must understand how serious the situation is and then we must act. All things are connected. Whatever happens to the Earth, also happens to the sons of Earth.

• Let me share the poem by Hillol Ray with you.

Elena Semenovna starts

Page 6: Gracheva l1

We are all puppets to cheer on this Earth,While joy and sorrow always come since our birth!Daylight follow dust towards the gloomy nights,And bring us such a joy to renew our sights!Fresh air and clean water nourish our souls,Without them, we suffer, and pay the heavy tolls!

Page 7: Gracheva l1

Only when all the rivers have run dryAnd all the fish in the sea have diedOnly when all the rainforests have been burnt downAnd there is no food for the animalsOnly when all the blue skies havebeen filled with smokeAnd the cities of the world have chockedWill the white man understandThat it’s too late to save the earth

Page 9: Gracheva l1

We’ve spent thousands of years fighting for our survival. And

now we’ve discovered our planet is under threat and it’s all

our fault.

The rainforests are dying, plant and animal species are

disappearing, seas are being contaminated, the air is being

polluting crops are failing to grow, people are dying of

hunger. So many years we were sitting and just looking how

our nature disappeared and now started repairing the

damage.

Well, today we have guests in our studio. They are ecologists

from different countries. They are going to tell us about

ecological problems.

We’ve got so many problems! But don’t be depressed.

We can solve the problems if take action. Our pupils have

projects connected with ecological disasters. Let’s listen and

perhaps after our meeting we’ll be able to solve our global

problems. We’ve got ways out so we don’t need even think.

I have named my project

«Think Green» because

now I want to tell you

about our ecological

problems and what we

can do to dispose them.

Page 14: Gracheva l1

• A lot of people want to save our planet,

but very few do anything to help. Maybe

you think that saving the Earth is hard

work. Wrong! In fact, there are many

easy things you can do…

Page 15: Gracheva l1

• Collect a few seeds from a tree and plant them. It`s an easy way to have beautiful garden and save the world`s oxygen.

Page 16: Gracheva l1

• Don`t buy a lot of plastic food bags. Just wash old ones and use them again!

It takes a 100 years for plastic to break down, so you can save the planet

and save some cash!

Page 17: Gracheva l1

• Do you write a few words on a sheet of paper and then throw it away? Don`t! You can use it again. Keep some scrap paper around for notes and telephone numbers instead for using a new sheet each time.

Page 18: Gracheva l1

• Take a little time to think about what you buy at the supermarkets. Don`t

buy any products with a lot of packaging. Don`t buy any disposable products. These things may be more convenient, but at what price? Think

how much money you can save and what a difference you can make to

our world by shopping carefully.

About me

• My name is Anastasia Miroshnichenko. I’m 14 years old. I’m studying in Lyceum in ecological class. I’m really worried about our environment. There are a lot of problems in our country, so I look for ideas witch help us to chance our nature.

Eco-Heroes

• In Tamboville, South Africa, the Wilger Veld Youth Club organized a clean-up of the town. They started a community food garden. Now people have fresh food and put rubbish in bins. Before the clean-up, many birds had left the town because was no food for them and nowhere to live. Now they are coming back.

Page 23: Gracheva l1

• In Bhutan, children in a small town of 800 people found that their community threw away load of thing made plastic every month. So they had a competition to see how many pieces of plastic they could collect.. They collected 4,800 pieces and put them on display. Those who collected the most got prizes. The result?People don’t use as much plastic now and lots of people use a cloth bag instead of a plastic bag for shopping.

Page 24: Gracheva l1

• A youth group in the Oman calls itself «Green Beans». They organize sales and film shows after school to raise money. Then they use the money to adopt endangered animals and buy acres of rainforest. They also have a beach clean-up twice a year.

Page 25: Gracheva l1

Raise Money• Raising money for charity is a great

thing to do. It can also be great fun.

• We can organize a concert at school. At

first we could found all the best singers

and musicians in our Lyceum. Agree on a

date, a time and a place with our

teachers . After that we could invite all

pupils to the show. I think that a lot of

people will go to the concert and we can

raise enough money.

Page 26: Gracheva l1

• Are you good at cooking? We also can organize a cake sale. Make sure you have got enough people who will make cakes and enough helpers who will sell things. If you cannot cooking you can ask to help your mother. She maybe will make a big tasty cake for sale. After that you can sell the cakes to other hungry children!

HELP ANIMALS

• In recent years

environmentalists have In

become increasingly

concerned about the

number of animals facing

extinction. Unless we do

something to save them

now, we may soon lose

many rare species

forever.

Page 32: Gracheva l1

• We should stop the

destroying the

habitats of wild

animals.

Page 33: Gracheva l1

They will be able to

live and breed in their

natural environment.

Page 34: Gracheva l1

• Governments should

ban the hunting of

endangered species

completely.

Page 35: Gracheva l1

Many animals, such as

tigers and alligators,

would have a better

chance of survival.

Page 36: Gracheva l1

• We should make

more wildlife parks.

Page 37: Gracheva l1

• Rare species will be

able to live safely

without losing their

homes to man, or

their lives to illegal

hunters.

Page 38: Gracheva l1

• There are many ways

in which we can save

endangered species

from extinccare tion.

Without and

consideration, they

will certainly

disappear.

TRAFFIC PROBLEM

IN THE

WORLD

Page 42: Gracheva l1

• We know that cars are bad for us. So why do

we carry on using our cars so much? We all

make excuses: “The buses are terrible”.

• Yes, it’s comfortable and fast when my

father takes me to school, but is it good for our

environment?

• So now my advice how to give up the car

pollution.

Page 43: Gracheva l1

1. Use your legs

Over 25% of car journeys are under two

miles – short journeys we could easily walk

or cycle. Leg power can save you money,

keep you fit and help you live longer. And

regular exercise cuts the risk of heart

disease by 50%!

Page 44: Gracheva l1

2. Use public transport

• On average, about forty people travel in

one bus, while the same number occupy

thirty-three cars. Sometimes it can take a

little bit longer, but so what? You can

relax on the bus or train, read a book, talk

to someone, meet the love of your life –

who knows?

Page 45: Gracheva l1

3. Think before you go

• Do you really have to go to that

shopping centre on the other side of town?

What about the shops around the corner?

Before you get into your car, think about

whether you really need to make that

journey.

Page 46: Gracheva l1

4. Share cars

• If you’ve really got to use a car,

share journeys with someone else. It is

much cheaper and kinder of the

environment.

Page 47: Gracheva l1

5. Take action

• We often think there is nothing we can do

about the noise, pollution and danger of traffic.

There is. If your street’s full of heavy traffic,

talk to your neighbors about it. Write to the

papers. Go to the town council. Ask for a speed

limit. Ask for a zebra crossing or a pedestrian

area. Get a protest group together. Don’t just

sit around and complain!

Traffic problems in

Makeyevka

Page 55: Gracheva l1

In the Town

• In our town Makeyevka there are many

streets, buildings, transports and routs.

It’s very good, but often people have

accidents. It’s terrible and dangerous for

us. People must be more attentive!

Climate Change

Global Warming

by Valeria Bukreeva

Page 59: Gracheva l1

• My name is Valeria Bukreeva. I study at the first course in group B of Lyceum. My class is an ecological one. I’m worried about our planet very much. The Earth is wonderful. All people’s lives depend on their planet, on the Sun ,on surrender plants and animals. But some people don’t understand this fact or even don’t want to try. They cut down trees, pollute air, throw rubbish away to lakes and rivers, leave litter in the forests. All these activities destroy our beautiful Earth.

• But one of the most important problem to talk about is global warming and climate change. Chemicals are thrown into seas and oceans, a lot gas, coal and oil is burnt. These causes global warming and climate change. My project is about this problem.

Page 60: Gracheva l1

Global Warming

• Global Warming: Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. A warmer Earth may lead to changes in rainfall patterns, a rise in sea level, and a wide range of impacts on plants, wildlife, and humans. When scientists talk about the issue of climate change, their concern is about global warming caused by human activities.

Page 61: Gracheva l1

• Climate change may be a big problem, but there are many little things we can do to make a difference. If we try, most of us can do our part to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that we put into the atmosphere. Many greenhouse gases come from things we do every day. As we have learned, these greenhouse gases trap energy in the atmosphere and make the Earth warmer.

Page 62: Gracheva l1

You can help make the planet a better

place!

• Driving a car or using electricity is not wrong. We just

have to be smart about it. Some people use less energy

by carpooling. For example, four people can ride

together in one car instead of driving four cars to work.

Here are some additional ways you can help make the

planet a better place!

Page 63: Gracheva l1

Read

• Learning about the environment is very important. There

are many good books that will help you learn. To get

started, ask a teacher or a librarian for some

suggestions. You also can look at the Links page to find

other good web sites with information about the

environment and climate change.

Page 64: Gracheva l1

Save Electricity

• Whenever we use electricity, we help put greenhouse gases into the air. By turning off lights, the television, and the computer when you are through with them, you can help a lot.

Bike, Bus, and Walk

You can save energy by sometimes taking the bus, riding a bike, or walking.

Page 65: Gracheva l1

• There are lots of ways we can improve the environment. One of the ways to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that we put into the air is to buy products that don't use as much energy. By conserving energy, we help reduce climate change and make the Earth a better place. Some products – like certain cars and stereos – are made specially to save energy.

When You Buy, Buy

Cool Stuff

RecycleRecycle cans, bottles,

plastic bags, and

newspapers. When you

recycle, you send less

trash to the landfill and

you help то save natural

resources, like trees, oil,

and elements such as

aluminum.

Page 66: Gracheva l1

Some Things to Think About

• Did you know that you can help the environment if you buy recyclable products instead of non-recyclable ones? Look for the recycle mark – three arrows that make a circle – on the package. Recyclable products are usually made out of things that already have been used. It usually takes less energy to make recycled products than to make new ones. The less energy we use, the better.

Page 67: Gracheva l1

Cars

• Cars are an important part of life for most people. But cars also cause pollution and release a lot of greenhouse gases into the air. Fortunately, there are some cars that are better for the environment. These cars can travel longer on a smaller amount of gasoline. They don't pollute as much, either. Using these kinds of cars can help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the air.

I have a questioner which will help us to find out how

environmentally aware we are. Your task is simple.

Just choose right for you expression. Don’t forget to

write down your name and surname. I’ll score and tell

you results next lesson.

And now some questions.

1. What does your family do with empty bottles?

2. When you buy one or two items at supermarket, you

3. How often do you choose products which contain

recycled materials?

4. If you were asked to a Save the Animal project, you

would …

5. A local beach has been polluted with oil. Your actions.

6. You eat a chocolate bar in the street. What do you do

with the wrapper?

Page 71: Gracheva l1

• Conclusion: Ancient people were face to face

with wild unknown nature every part of which

tried to have them as testy prey. Rare human

could stay alive that time. They had dyed even

before they were twenty. Nature was the place

they lived and nature was their foe. The period

asked question would you survive or you’d die at

that moment. Human chose the surviving way.

So if many years ago human was attacked by

nature now he attacks it. We’ve got problems so

we need to find decision. If we don’t watch out:

human spice may disappear.
