CharacterizationMontresor: Insulted= seeks revenge Calculating in his decision making and will not risk

his own life Uses fortunato’s fondness for wine against him Wearing a mask of black silk, invites fortunato to

his catacombs: secretly to kill him. Amontillado = bait

PLAN:-sends servants away to the carnival-as the vaults are covered in (Nitre) mineral = what causes Fortunato to cough -seeks the wine and too driven by pride to turn back: this works in Montresor’s favor

Page 11: Grab your book and put it under your desk… TODAY’S OBJECTIVES 10/29/2013 You will be able to: Determine correct vs. incorrect answers, demonstrating.

CharacterizationFortunato: Multicolored costume of the jester, including

a cone cap with bells (significance?) F. wants to confirm it is amontillado and sees

luchesi as a threat – hence why he obsesses over being the one to go with montresor

F is a mason and M claims he is as well – f wants proof. M shows him his trowel/tool – to say a stonemason

Fortunato claims that montresor must be jesting (joking)

Page 12: Grab your book and put it under your desk… TODAY’S OBJECTIVES 10/29/2013 You will be able to: Determine correct vs. incorrect answers, demonstrating.

DialogueAn important aspect to consider:

the dialogue between Montresor and the reader (although he does

all the talking)VS.

Montresor and Fortunato’s dialogue: What is Montresor hiding?

Page 13: Grab your book and put it under your desk… TODAY’S OBJECTIVES 10/29/2013 You will be able to: Determine correct vs. incorrect answers, demonstrating.

P.O.V. & Unreliable narrator“No one attacks me with impunity”

Montresor claims at the end that his heart feels sick because of the dampness of the catacombs

It is 50 years later that he tells the story…but remembers it all too well

Punishment without proof – does fortunato deserve to die? Montresor uses his judgment of fortunato and becomes the

executioner = causes him to be unreliable

Because montresor confesses this story 50 years after its occurrence – the passing of time, events, and narrative

overall become more unreliable***

His unreliability as a narrator overrides any potential for any rational consideration
