Introduction

Main Control Panel

1. START Key [ ]Starts printing or making a master. The indicatoris lit GREEN” when the key is active.

2. STOP Key [ ]Interrupts printing, and cancels confidentialfeature.

3. ALL RESET Key [ ]Returns all settings to initial status. This key isalso used to clear error messages aftertroubleshooting.

4. TEST PRINT Key [ ]Prints a test print from the current master to allowyou to check print quality, printing position,density, and so on.

5. MASTER-MAKING/PRINT Key [ / ]Switches between Master-Making and Printingoperations. Normally, selection is madeautomatically according to the current process.

6. LINE/PHOTO Key [ / ]Switches the current mode between Lineand Photo processing.

7. AUTO PRINT Key [ + ]Automates the process of master makingthrough to printing.

8. PROGRAMME Key [ ]Provides access to programmed grouping ofprints.

9. KeyUse when making programme settings.

10. + KeyUse when making programme settings.

11. MEMORY Key [ ]Provides access to the memory features.

12. Print Quantity Keys [0 to 9 Keys]Use these keys to enter the number of copiesto be printed, or to enter other numeric values.

13. O/SAVE Key [ ]Use to store settings in memory.

14. C/ERASE Key [ ]Cancels the number entered and resets the PrintQuantity Display to zero. Also erases contentsof memory.

15. / CALL Key [ ]Use for memory recall.

16. PRINT SPEED/DENSITY SelectionKey [ ]Switches between print speed and printingdensity modes.

17. PRINT SPEED/DENSITY Adjustment Keys[ ]Adjusts print speed or printing density (on a 1to 5 scale).

18. PRINT POSITION CENTRE Key [ ]Moves vertical print position back to centre.

20. SCANNING CONTRAST Mode Key [ ]Switches between auto and manual scanningcontrast adjustment modes. The indicator lightswhen the auto adjustment mode is selected.

21. SCANNING CONTRAST Adjustment Keys[ ]Selects contrast adjustments (on a 1 to 5 scale)for the darkness of the original to be scanned.

30. TWO-UP Key [␣ ␣ ]Reproduces two prints side by side on onesheet of paper.

31. SORTER Key [␣ ]Use this key when you use an optional sorter.The indicators light when the sorter is active.

32. IMAGE PROCESSING Selection Key [␣ ␣ ]Selects either the Fine Enhance or Dot Photoprocessing features. The Fine Enhancefeature prints small characters or fine linesclearly. The Dot Photo feature processes aphoto original with two kinds of dot screen.

33. BOOK PROCESSING Selection Key [␣ ␣ ]Erases or brightens the binding shadow(spine) of an open, bound original placed onthe Platen Glass.

34. AUTO IDLE Key [ ]When switched ON, extremely light or blurredprinting is prevented after the machine hasnot been used for long periods of time.

35. REDUCE Key [ ]Selects any of four reduction ratios ordecreases the zoom ratio.

36. 1:1 KeyReturns the reproduction ratio to 1:1 (100%).

• Wrinkled, curled, folded or torn paper• Chemically treated or coated paper

Store printing paper in a level, dry area. Storing the paper in an excessivelyhumid area could cause paper jams as well as poor print quality

Weight:Bound originals should not exceed 10kg in weight.

Using the Optional ADFYou can use the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) to feed automatically up to50 original sheets from A6 to A3 size. The weight of the original sheets shouldbe between 50g/m2 and 110g/m2 .

Note:Use the Platen Glass when printing the following originals:• Patched or worn originals.• Wrinkled, curled, folded, or torn originals.• Transparent originals (such as tracing paper or OHP transparencies).• Chemically treated originals (such as thermal or carbon paper).• Originals with correction fluid or glue.• Extremely thin originals (less than 50g/m2 ).• Extremely thick originals (greater than 100g/m2).• Heavy drawing paper.• Bound originals.• Originals with staples or clips.

Paper Feed Tray Set-Up

Paper Feed TraySetting up the Paper Feed Tray

1. Open the Paper Feed Tray

2. Adjust the Feed Tray Paper Guides to the widthof the paper and the load printing paper.

Important!Do not mix printing paper of different sizes.

3. Set the Paper feed pressure.

(NORMAL) Standard paper

(CARD) Thick paper such as drawingpaper or smooth paper

Adding or Replacing PaperIf you want to add paper or use paper of a different size during printing, lowerthe Paper Feed Tray so that you can load the paper easily.

To lower the Paper Feed Tray, hold down the FeedTray Down button.

Important!Do not mix different paper sizes in the Paper FeedTray.

To prevent paper jams and misfeeds, follow the directions below:

• When using standard paper, set the Paper Feed Pressure Adjustment Leverto:“ “ (NORMAL).

• When using thick paper or smooth paper, set the Paper Feed PressureAdjustment Lever to “ “ (CARD).

• Slide the Feed Tray Paper Guides and Receiving Tray Paper Guides to fitthe paper size.

• Position the Paper Receiving Tray to fit the paper length.

• Use flat printing paper that is free of folds. If curled paper is unavoidable,place the printing paper so that the curl faces down.

• Printing paper tends to stick to the Drum surface if the top margin is toonarrow on the original or if the upper portion of the original uses a largeamount of ink. To solve this problem, lower the print position to provide awider top margin or reverse the top and bottom of the original. Then restartprinting from the beginning.

Handling and OperationTo ensure proper product quality and the prolonged life of your machine,follow the directions below concerning handling and operation.

!WARNING (To Avoid Personal Injury)• Use common sense.

• Do not open the cover or move the machine during operation.

• Do not handle the parts inside the machine, except what is specified in thisUser’s Guide. The parts are made with high precision and can be damagedeasily.

• Never stick your hand or fingers in the openings in or around the Paper FeedTray as well as the Paper Receiving Tray during operation.

• Keep loose clothing or long hair away from moving parts to avoid becomingentangled.

• Do not try to alter the unit or remove parts.

• Disconnect the electrical cord if you think there is an electrical problem.

• Before cleaning any parts of the machine, turn the power off.

! CAUTION (To avoid Mechanical Problems)• Open/close the covers gently.

• Do not turn off or unplug the machine during operation.

Basic Operation

Basic Operation

1. Turn the Power Switch ON.This is located on the far side on the lower rightside of the machine.

2. Check the settings on the Control Panel.With power ON, the Control Panel indicators showthe initial settings.

Open the Sub Control Panel cover and make anynecessary changes.

Holding down the (ALL RESET) key formore than one second returns the ControlPanel to the initial settings.

3. Place an original on the Platen Glass.Open the Platen Cover and place an original facedown. Position the original according to theindicators on the left-hand side of the glass. Closethe cover, resting it gently on the original.

! CAUTIONDo not force the cover down on top of a boundoriginal placed on the Platen Glass.

For machines with the optional ADF

i) Open the ADF Tray.

ii) Place an original on the ADF TrayAdjust the ADF Original Guides to the width ofthe originals. Then insert the originals face downinto the ADF Unit. The originals are automaticallyfed and set into place.

Note:A maximum of 50 originals can be set into placeon the ADF Tray at one time.

4. When an original is in placed the processautomatically changes to master making.The message “Ready to make master” isdisplayed and the MASTER-MAKING indicatorilluminates.

5. Press the START key.The original is scanned. A master is created anda test print made. Check print quality, positionand density and change these as required.Press the (TEST PRINT) key to check theresults of any change made.

6. Enter the number of copies to be printed.Specify the number of copies to be printed usingthe Print Quantity keys; the number is displayedin the Print Quantity Display.

Note:Press the "C" key to reset the Print QuantityDisplay to "0".

7. Press the START key.The specified number of copies is printed.

Producing Test Prints

If changes have been made to the print positionand other settings, check the print quality byproducing test prints.

By holding down the TEST PRINT key, youcan print continuously.

If you enter a number incorrectly, press the "C"key to reset the Print Quantity.

4. Press the START key.The specified number of copies are produced withan extra test print.

Photo/Half-Tone Processing

Reproduces photograph or halftone imagesclearly without reducing the sharpness of linesand texts.This processing mode is recommended formulticoloured originals or photo originals thatinclude lines and text.If necessary, the scanning contrast setting shouldbe checked and adjusted according to imagedensity.

Originals can be reduced or enlarged, using eitherpreset ratios or zoom ratios that you specify.Press the PRESET RATIO/ZOOM Selection key toselect the method that you want to use: Preset Ratioor Zoom Ratio. To switch back, press the key again.(When the Zoom Ratio is available, the “ZOOM”message appears in the Main Display next to theReproduction percentage.)

Using Preset Ratios

To reduce or enlarge any standard-size original to another standard size, usethe Preset Ratio method. Seven Preset Ratios are available any time that the“ZOOM” message does not appear in the Main Display. If selected, the chosenratio appears in the Main Display, and the Preset Ratios indicator in the SubControl Panel lights up.

Using Zoom Ratios

You can specify any reduction or enlargement ratio between 50% and 200%.

1. Confirm that the “ZOOM” message appearsin the Main Display.If a Preset Ratio indicator is illuminated, pressthe PRESET RATIO/ZOOM Selection key. Thecurrent reproduction ratio is shown in the MainDisplay.

2. Press the (REDUCE) or (ENLARGE) keyto specify the desired ratio in the Main Display.Each time you press the REDUCE or ENLARGEkey, the percentage in the Main Display decreasesor increases by 1%.

Holding down the key longer than one secondchanges the percentage continuously.

Holding down the (ALL RESET) keylonger than one second returns the print sizeto the initial setting (1:1).

Note:When you press the 1:1 key, “ZOOM” disappearsfrom the Main Display and the ratio returns to theoriginal size (100%).

Image Tone Contrast Control

1. Confirm that the (Auto Adjustment)indicator is OFF.If not, press the (SCANNING CONTRASTMode) key to switch to the manual adjustmentmode.

2. Press the key to lighten contrast orthe key to darken contrast.Each press of the or keys lightens or darkensthe image tone contrast by one degree (on a 1 to5 scale).

Press the BOOK PROCESSING Selection keyto select either ␣ (PHOTO) or (ERASE).The corresponding indicator is illuminated and"BOOK (PHOTO) [or (ERASE)]" appears in theMain Display.

(PHOTO)Lightens the binding “spine” shadow between thefacing pages of a bound original. Images in theshadow will not be erased.

6. Press the " " key to check or correct thenumber of clusters and copies to be printedfor any group already set up.

Each time you press the " " key, the entry stagefor the previous group is displayed.

Note:If you incorrectly enter the number of clusters and/or copies for the displayed group, press the “C”key to initialise the entry stage, then enter thecorrect numbers.

4. Press the “+” key to set the print quantity forthe second group.The entry stage for the second group appears inthe Main Display.

7. Enter other settings for Programme A.Specify printing density, printing position,reproduction ratio, and so on. (The Two-Up featurecan also be specified.)

7. Place an original face-down on the PlatenGlass.

Note:If the optional ADF Unit is installed, allprogrammed originals can be placed on the ADFTray at one time.

8. Press the START key.Prints are produced according to the specifiedprogramme starting with the last original specified.When printing is completed for the current originalplace the next original on the Platen Glass andpress the START key again.

Note:If the optional ADF Unit is used, this procedure isnot required.

When printing is completed for all originals, thecurrent Programme B settings are automaticallycleared. To interrupt this programmed printing,press the (STOP) key.

Holding down the (ALL RESET) keylonger than one second returns the controlpanel to the initial settings and clears theprogramme.

Operational Features Replacing the Ink Pack

1. Open the Front Cover, and remove the emptyInk Cartridge from the Drum Unit.Release the Ink Cartridge Locking Lever (greenin colour) and remove the empty Ink Cartridge fromthe Drum Unit.

2. Remove the cap from a new Ink Cartridge.

3. Align the arrow on the new Ink Cartridge withthe arrow marked on the Drum.While pushing the Ink Cartridge Locking Leveraside, rotate the Ink Cartridge until its arrow meetsthe arrow marked on the Drum.

4. Insert the new Ink Cartridge into the Drum.

5. Lock the Ink Cartridge into place and closethe Front Cover.Return the Ink Cartridge Locking Lever to its initialposition to keep the Ink Cartridge in place. Also,press on the lower right-hand area of the FrontCover to close it securely.

Important!• Never insert a cartridge of a different colour

ink.Always be sure that the colour of the new InkCartridge is the same as the of the one beingreplaced. If you want to change the print colouryou must replace the entire Drum Unit.

• There is ink on the master that is wrappedaround the Drum Unit. Keep your hands andclothing away from it.If your hands come into contact with ink, washthem immediately and thoroughly.

1. Raise the Scanner Table.Hold the Scanner Table Release Lever and raisethe Scanner Table until it stops.

2. Open the Master Loading Unit.Pull down the green Master Loading Unit ReleaseLever, which is located on the right side of theunit.

3. Open the Master Roll Cover.Pull the Master Roll Cover down.

4. Remove the depleted Master Roll.Push the depleted Master Roll to the right, pull ittowards you and remove it from the supporter.

5. Remove both left and right flanges from thedepleted Master Roll.

6. Attach the existing flanges to a new MasterRoll.Unpack a new Master Roll.

Attach the flanges removed from the depletedMaster Roll to the new one, with the ColouredFlange (A) to the right end and the white Flange(B) to the left end. Then unwrap the new MasterRoll.

7. Install the new Master Roll.Pushing the coloured flange onto the right-handflange holder, slide the white flange securely intothe centre groove of the supporter.

8. Insert the leading edge of the Master Rollunder the green film.Unroll the Master Roll by pulling on the leadingedge and insert the leading edge under the greenfilm.

9. Close the Master Roll Cover gently.

10.Close the Master Loading Unit gently andreturn the Scanner Table to the originalposition.

Important!If the leading edge of the Master Roll is insertedtoo far beyond the green film the excess portionwill be automatically cut off. If the strip that hasbeen cut off remains inside, an advisory messagewill appear in the Main Display to advise you toremove it. Be sure to remove the cut-off strip.

1. Pull out the Master Disposal Box.Hold together both the upper and lower handlesof the Master Disposal Box and pull it out.

Note:When carrying the Master Disposal Box, be sureto hold the handles so as not to drop used masters.

2. Discard used masters.While holding the locking lever up, then discardused masters. Return the locking lever and closethe cover.

3. Insert the Master Disposal Box into position.Holding the handles, insert the Master DisposalBox into position as far as it will go. Then releasethe handles.

o The machine does not start with the Power Switch on.

ACTION ➮ • Check whether the electrical cord is firmly connected to an electricalsocket.

• Check whether the electrical cord is connected to the machine.

• Check whether the commercial electrical circuit breaker is normal.

o The “CLOSE FRONT COVER” message appears even whenthe Front cover is closed.

• There is a metal plate in the lower right-hand section of the Frontcover. Unless this plate is in direct contact with the magnet on thelower right-hand part of the machine, the advisory message remainson the Main Display.

ACTION ➮ Press on the lower right-hand area of the Front cover to close ittightly.

o There is no image on the prints.

• Check whether the original is correctly placed.

ACTION ➮ Be sure the original is placed face down.

• Check whether the master is correctly placed.

o The unwanted background of an original is picked up onthe prints.

o Printed images are excessively faint or blurred.

• If the machine is not used for a long period of time, ink on thesurface of the Drum will dry. Dry ink on the Drum Unit may causefaint or blurred printing.

ACTION ➮ Press the (TEST PRINT) key several times until a clearprinted image is obtained.

Activate the (Automatic Idle) feature before operation toprevent light images that may occur after periods of non-use.

• Light originals result in light images.

ACTION ➮ Press the SCANNING CONTRAST Adjustment key ( ) tomake scanning contrast darker. Then replace the original andpress the (START) key.

• If the temperature is low (below 15°C) or the Ink cartridges arestored in a cold place, ink may not flow smoothly.

ACTION ➮ Warm the room or Ink cartridge before operating the machine.

o Vertical blank lines are found on printed copies.

• The Thermal Print Head (the device that makes the master) maybe smudged with paper powder from the master.

ACTION ➮ Open the Master Loading Unit and clean the Thermal Print Headusing a soft cloth or tissue.

• The Platen glass is stained with correction fluid or dust.

ACTION ➮ Clean glass with a soft cloth or tissue.

If the optional unit is installed:

• The ADF scanner glass is smudged with dust or correction fluid.

ACTION ➮ Open the ADF cover and clean the glass with a soft cloth ortissue.

o The backs of the prints are smudged with ink.

• The rubber Press roller, which keeps the printing paper pressedagainst the drum during printing, is stained with ink.

ACTION ➮ Remove the Drum unit and clean the roller gently with a softcloth or tissue.

• The Feed tray paper guides are set at maximum width.

ACTION ➮ Adjust the Feed tray paper guides to fit the width of the printingpaper.

o Printing paper sticks to the drum surface.

Colour Drum Units (RISOGRAPH GR Drum)A variety of colours are available, such as blue, red, green and brown. EachDrum Unit has its own case for storage.

RISOGRAPH Digitiser IIIThis accessory can be used to edit and adapt originals to be scanned andprinted. You can divide an original into areas to create customised printsusing editing features such as framing, screening, outlining, stamping andreversing. This accessory also provides a feature which simplifies the creationof multi-colour prints.

Sheet Feeder SF30003000 sheets of printing paper can be loaded in this sheet feeder.

Job Separator IIIThis accessory efficiently sorts groups of prints with strips of paper as theyare printed. The Job Separator is attached next to the Paper Receiving Tray.

RISOGRAPH ADF IIIThe Automatic Document Feed (ADF) Unit automatically feeds up to 50 sheetsfor scanning. When you use the ADF Unit with the Auto Print, ProgrammedPrinting, Two-Up, or Memory features multiple print jobs can be set up andcompleted automatically.

Note:If the optional ADF Unit is installed, be sure to use the Optional ADF UnitReplacement Pages provided.

RISOGRAPH Sorter TM5000This large-capacity sorter enables you to produce multiple sets of booklets(50 sets per tower) without extra manual operation. Printed copies arestacked into the tower at the maximum print speed and automatically stapledwith the built-in motor-driven stapler. Three additional towers are availableto expand the capacity.

RISOGRAPH Sorter TM2500This compact sorter is capable of handling up to A3 sized paper. It is equippedwith an electric stapler so that you can efficiently create booklets from finishedprints.

Key Card Counter IIIThis counter shows the number of copies made and the number of mastersconsumed within a preset period of time. This can help you control costs.

Computer InterfaceThe computer interface enables you to combine all the advantages of yourdesktop publishing software with the high speed efficiency and low costprinting benefits of your RISOGRAPH Digital Printer.
