Designer: TV animation Tiger Aspect/Lauren ChildThis book is based on the children’s TV series ‘Charlie and Lola’. Although the illustrations are produced by the TV company for the book, I think the design really fits in well with my planned use of photography for my book; it combines illustrations with photographed items which I find as a unique touch to the book. I’ve also notice that such areas like the grass look like they’re created via college, which will give me many ideas on how to use layering tool on Photoshop during development.

I also like the style and length of text here because the length of it; it fits in with the age range as the length shouldn’t overwhelm the child who is still grasping the basics of reading and writing. This has inspired me to use this length of text within the characters’ speech bubbles as a part of my story to prevent the child from getting too confused with the content.

Designer: Evan StanleyEvan Stanley is an American freelance illustrator who’s most well-known for her work towards her own ‘Ghosts of the Future’ as well as the Sonic the Hedgehog comics from Archie Comics. I decided to explore this designer because of the work she has done for formats other than storybooks and how I can gain inspiration to use this in my own and s also since I am going to be using character’s speech bubbles to tell the story to see how I could make mine more appropriate to my target audience.

Sometimes the following or proceeding characters and boxes overlap each other. If I was to simplify this in my book it would still look imaginative but easier for the child reader to understand the story. The front cover is also inspiring for my book since the characters are giving a sense of teamwork and justice yet no nonsense- which will inspire the front cover for my sea safety book.

This comic page also inspired me with the onomatopoeia that is a decorative font and is also bright, bulky and multi-coloured. This will be good for my sound effects such as the SPLASH of the sea. Because children within my set age range (6-8 years old) tend to cope with more varied style and length of text due to having more experience with reading (Creative Institute, 2015) it may still engage the 6-year-olds with it being bold and bright in colour. The illustrations themselves are cartoony but still very detailed which relates to my survey as primary research; most of the respondents felt their child enjoyed more detailed drawings. I will apply this element to my storybook but keep the cartoony charm to my characters at the same time.

Designer: Jim DavisJim Davis is a cartoonist who has worked on the Garfield comic strips. I decided to pick this designer because how his character illustrations inspire me for mine. They are blocky and cartoony but also have detail to them such as movement markings. It still engages a younger audience with the style and colours but in enough detail to draw in the older age bracket. I also really like how the designer here has given objects such as the weighing scales personality to add in more humour to the story.

R.W Alley:R.W Alley is an illustrator who is most well-known for illustrating the Paddington Bear Books as of 1990 (Paddinton.com, 2016). The reason I chose to explore this designer as because of two things: mainly the colours that he applies to his illustrations and how soft and delicate they look which I could apply to my sea animal characters when filling their colours in on Photoshop.
