The Global Positioning System, usually called GPS, is the only fully-

functional satellite navigation system(allow small electronic devices

to determine their location (Longitude,

Latitude, and Altitude) in within a few meters

using time signals

HOW TO GET A POSITION

Need signal from at least four SVs for 3D position

One SV provides a time reference

Distance to three remaining SVs is determined by observing the GPS signal travel time from SV to the receiver

With three known points, and distances to each, we can determine the GPS receiver’s position (trilateration)

The Global Positioning System is a constellation of 31 satellites that is used to calculate your position.

Fast speed Leads us in right

direction Helps improve

mapping skills Makes navigation

easier

Not very cheap People focus on GPS

more than road which causes accident

Needs good care and handling

External power

The United States Department of Defense developed the system, officially named NAVSTAR GPS (Navigation Signal Timing and Ranging Global Positioning System), and launched the first experimental satellite in 1978.

Sources of Errors

Largest source is due to the atmosphere Atmospheric refraction

Charged particles Water vapor Ionosphere

(Charged Particles)

Troposphere

Other Sources of Errors

Geometry of satellite positions Satellite clock errors SV position or “ephemeris” errors Quality of GPS receiver Multi-path errors

Four Basic Functions of GPS

Position and coordinates.

The distance and direction between any two waypoints, or a position and a waypoint.

Travel progress reports.

Accurate time measurement.
