Aims of Lesson 1

1. To introduce General Purpose Packages

2. To discuss different examples of GPPs

3. What do you get when you buy a GPP

4. To complete a poster, identifying the different types of GPPs and what they are used for

A General Purpose Package is a computer program, where the user enters information. The program then manipulates this information

Examples of GPPs Word Processing Spreadsheets Database Graphics Desktop Publishing Presentation software Web page creation

What do GPPs Consist of?

When you buy a GPP you get a CD Rom with the GPP program on it

You also get: A manual A tutorial guide A demonstration program An installer program An uninstaller program

GPP Examples – Which Package?

Production of text? Calculations ? Searching and organising data ? Drawing pictures ? Page layout ? Production of slides ? Making a web site ?

Data Protection Act The Data Protection Act is a law that has been passed to

control the storage of personal information The Data Controller is the person or company storing the

info Controller must:

Keep accurate, up-to-date information Only keep data as long as they need it Have security measures Don’t share

The Data Subject is the person the data is about Rights of the Data Subject

To see the data on themselves within 40 days (not always) Have any errors corrected Company not to sell data to other companies

Computer Misuse Act This legislation makes it a criminal offence

to hack into another machine, spread a computer virus or phish

Copyright Designs and Patents Act This legislation makes it illegal to copy

software without the owners permission

Integrated Package An integrated package is a package that combines 2

or more GPPs, for example Microsoft Works

Advantages HCI is the same for each part of the package. Easy to transfer data between programs

Disadvantages Individual programs may have less features. The integrated package may take up more of the computer’s

memory

Dynamic/Static Linkage

Dynamic Data Linkage A package is dynamic if a change in the data in

one file is automatically updated in the file linked to it.

Static Data Linkage In this type of link the data is linked but changes

in one file does not update the other

Standard File Formats

We use standard file formats so that we can save files and open them up on different computer systems
