1. General information on the scotch-yokemechanism

Biffi gas-over-oil actuators, "GPO" seriesfor normal temperature (-30° to +80°C)or for low temperature (-60° to +80°C),are normally manufactured with acanted scotch-yoke mechanism. Thetorque curve developed by this type ofactuator is most suitable to operatequarter-turn valves, particularly ballvalves.

Fig. 1 shows the diagrams, as a functionof the angular position, of the typicalrequired torque of a ball valve both inopening and in closing, and the outputtorque of a canted scotch-yokemechanism.Fig.1 also shows the comparisonbetween the output torque curves of acanted and a symmetric scotch-yoke

mechanisms, and of a "constant torque"actuator (i.e. Rack & Pinion type). These graphs demonstrate that, sincethe arm length and the cylinder diameterare the same, canted scotch-yokeactuators have the most suitablemechanism, both for technical andeconomical reasons, to operate quarter-turn valves.Biffi can anyway provide symmetricscotch-yoke actuators for specialapplications as low pressure ball valvesor plug valves.- Special modules for remote

communication via bus (Modbus orother protocols) are available.

- Special power supply of solenoidvalves and electronic line break controlwith solar panel is also available.

4. Scotch-yoke mechanism

The yoke has a bore with keyways tocouple the valve stem, the dimensionsof which are according to Biffi standardtables. On request Biffi can supply aninsert bush with machined orunmachined bore according to thedimensions of the valve stem. The yoke receives the thrust of thecylinder from the block pin (5) by meansof the bronze sliding blocks (6) whichmove inside the slots of the yoke arms. The block pin is mounted in the guideblock (7) where the threaded end of thecylinder piston rod is screwed. The guide block slides along the guidebar (8) by means of the bushing (9)made of sintered bronze charged withteflon. The bushing guarantees a very lowfriction coefficient.

The scotch-yoke mechanism shown inFig.4 transforms the linear movement ofthe hydraulic cylinder into a 90° rotation. The housing (1) in fabricated carbonsteel provides for the coupling of theactuator to the valve flange and thesupport of the hydraulic cylinder; itencloses the scotch-yoke mechanismand together with the cover provides the mechanical protection. For the coupling to the valve, thehousing is provided with a flange withthreaded holes and dimensionsaccording to the Biffi standard tablesSCN 6200 and SCN 6201 (see pages28 and 29). If required, Biffi can supplyan adaptor flange machined accordingto the valve coupling dimensionsprovided by the Customer. The yoke (2) during its rotation iscontained by bronze bushings (3): one isassembled in the flange of the housing, the other in the cover (4).

The guide bar withstands the transversalforces originated by the angle betweenthe surface of the slots and theperpendicular to the piston rod axis.In this way the piston rod is not loadedwith transversal forces, thus not wearingits guide bushing and its ring sealswhich are assembled in the head flangeof the hydraulic cylinder. The bronze material used in the slidingparts guarantees a high efficiency of themechanism. The angular stroke of the yoke isadjustable between 82° and 98° bymeans of the mechanical stops screwedinto the end flange of the hydrauliccylinder (closed valve) and into the leftside of the housing (open valve). In case of an actuator with twocylinders, both mechanical stops arescrewed into the end flanges of thecylinders.

7. Working principle

The gas-over-oil actuator is fed bypressurised gas which, after beingfiltered, flows through the control valvesinto the tank relevant to the operation(opening or closing) to be performed. The hydraulic oil contained in the tank ispressurised by the gas and flows intothe relevant cylinder chamber, while theoil contained in the other chamber flowsinto the second tank. The cylinderpiston stroke causes the actuatoroperation.

LATVIAN GAZE, 28” ball valve with GPO

The oil flow from the cylinder into thetanks is adjusted by means of two flowcontrol valves. In this way it is possibleto adjust the stroking time of theactuator.Emergency manual override can beperformed by selecting the opening andclosing operation by means of the handactuated directional control valve andthen actuating the handpump.

8. Valve position indication

In the upper part of the standard Biffilimit switches enclosure there is a localposition indicator, which shows theposition of the valve along the angularstroke. When a remote continuous signalling ofthe position of the valve is required, theactuator is supplied with a positiontransmitter in accordance withCustomer requirements. If limit switches are not required, a localmechanical position indicator isprovided in the upper part of the yoke, for the continual indication of theposition of the valve.

If required, the actuator can be suppliedwith electric limit switches which can beadjusted along the complete angularstroke of the valve. The limit switchescan be provided in different typesaccording to Customer requirements:sealed, with contacts in inert gasatmosphere, with gold contacts, magnetic, proximity type etc. Whenpossible, because of dimensions, quantity and characteristics, the limitswitches are enclosed in a weather-proof IP 68 according to IEC 529 andEN 60529 and explosion-proofenclosure, which meets the ATEXEuropean standard with a compliancecertificate issued by an approvedLaboratory.

9. Actuator control system

The pneumatic valves in alluminium alloyare poppet-type in order to providebubble tightness. The sealing seats aremade of teflon, thus granting chemicalresistance, lack of sticking and agingeffects and the highest compatibility withevery environment condition. The basiccontrol system of the Biffi gas-over-oilactuator mainly consists of a double 3-way 2-position control valve, which isnormally piloted by 2 solenoid valves forremote control, one for closing and onefor opening. It is also possible to locallyoperate this valve by means of 2 levers, one for closing and one for opening.

Biffi has produced a wide range ofpneumatic and hydraulic componentsspecifically engineered to suit the mostvarying needs of the customer(i.e. control mode, emergencyoperation, working temperature range, pressure range of the gas supply etc.).These components guarantee a highreliability and compact design.Every pneumatic valve is engineered towork with high pressure gas. Therefore the control group does notneed to be fed by means of a pressurereducer. In this way the reliability of thesystem is increased.

The Biffi gas-over-oil actuator is suppliedwith handpump and a 4-positiondirectional control valve to operate thevalve in emergency conditions in case ofgas supply failure. The directional control valve has 4 positions:automatic, close, open and by-pass.

The speed of actuator operation isadjusted by controlling the oil flow fromthe cylinder to the gas -over-oil tanks bymeans of 2 flow control valves. These valves are mounted on thepump-distributor group.

The Biffi insert bush with 2 externalkeys at 45° allows to position thekeyway for the valve every 90°.Consequentely actuator can be mountedin 4 positions at 90° on top of the valve.

For the biggest actuator models, the bore of the yoke can be machinedaccording to the dimensions of the valvestem.

In "automatic" position the handpump isoverridden, since in this case theactuator works by means of the gassupply. The "close" and "open" positionsallow to operate the actuator byactuating the handpump. The "by-pass" position allows for

For coupling to the valve, the housing isprovided with a flange with threadedholes according to Biffi standard tablesSCN 6200 and SCN 6201 enclosed(pages 28 and 29).

The number, dimensions and diameterof the holes are made in accordancewith ISO 5211, but for actuator models0.3 to 6 the holes are drilled on thecenterline in order to allow an easierassembly of an intermediate flange, when required. This intermediate flangecan be supplied when the valve flangecan not directly match the actuatorflange in its "standard" configuration. For the biggest actuator models, theactuator flange can be machined inaccordance with the valve flangedimensions. The yoke has a bore with keyways forcoupling to the valve stem, thedimensions of which are according toBiffi standard tables SCN 6200 andSCN 6201.

If required, for the standard models size0.3 to 6, Biffi can supply an insert bushwith unmachined bore in accordancewith Biffi standard table SCN 6202enclosed (page 31). On request theinsert bush bore can be machined byBiffi to couple the valve stem, providedits dimensions match the maximumstem acceptance of the bush accordingto Biffi table TN 1005, enclosed (page 32).The particular execution of the flangeand bushing allow the actuator to berotated by 90° in 4 different positionsaccording to the following figure.

15. Sizing of gas-over-oil actuatorsUsually the most critical situation for theactuator is the running torque of thevalve when the minimum pipelinepressure is available.Only when the gas supply is taken froman indipendent source (separatepipeline, emergency tank, separatecontrol system) the actuator with theminimum supply pressure must be ableto move the valve with the maximum DP.

Particular attention must be payed tothe opening of vent valves and by-passvalves, generally of small size. In this

case the gas speed and the DP acrossthe valve generate a significant dynamictorque to close the valve not only nearto the closing position, but along thevalve stroke. The valve makers mustcarefully evaluate this situation andprovide the correct torque values for thereal operating condition of the valve. The rule of thumb for this application isto consider the actuator supply atminimum pressure (i.e. 25 barg) to movethe valve with the max DP (i.e. 100 barg).

Normally the power gas for GPOactuator feeding is taken directly fromthe gasline. This means that thepressure of the gasline is the same usedby the actuator. Being the pipelinepressure normally not constant, aminimum and a maximum value of thepipeline pressure is defined by thetechnical specifications. With the minimum pressure the actuatormust move the valve with the minimum∆P. With the maximum pressure theactuator must move the valve withmaximum ∆P.

quarter-turn actuators GPO.Proper pedestals with flanges andadjustable stem joint to meet the valvetop mounting design are normallysupplied.

In order to keep the valve in position, the control systems usually include the

hydraulic locking device with doublepiloted check valves with thermal relieffunction or mechanical lock piloted bythe power gas.

For the motorisation of linear valves, asthrough-conduit gate valves frequentlyused in the gas pipelines, BIFFI can also propose the proper gas-over-oilactuators of the “HYGLA” series.

HYGLA actuators utilise the same high-pressure controls used for
