Chairman of Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co.(GPIC), the Company observed the Safety, Healthand Environment Week from 30th September to 4thOctober, 2000 at the GPIC complex in Sitra.On this occasion, Mr. Mustafa Al Sayed, GPICGeneral Manager said in a speech that the Companyis keen to organise this event on an annual basis. Heconveyed to the employees the best wishes of H. E.Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Minister of Oil andIndustry and GPIC Chairman and his thanks and ap-preciation to the Company’s staff.Mr. Al Sayed noted the significant achievement ofthe Company by recording 4.9 million man-hourswithout any lost time accidents for the Company’semployees and contractor workers. H.E. Ali Saleh Al Saleh, the Ministryof Commerce held a ceremony tohonour the companies that hadbeen awarded certification to ISO9000 and ISO 14000 quality andenvironmental management sys-tems. The Commerce Minister pre-sented a merit certificate to Mr.Ahmed Nuruddin, MaintenanceManager who represented theGPIC General Manager, Mr.Mustafa Al Sayed. Mr. Nuruddingave a presentation on theCompany’s experience in applyingthe ISO Environmental ManagementSystem (ISO 14000).It should be noted that top priorityis given by the Company’s man-agement in various areas of environmental protection to meet various health and safety requirements. Theseinclude landscaping, increasing areas of greenery and cultivating palm trees throughout the Complex, as wellas the establishment of a Charity Vegetable Garden and Charity Fish Farm. During the ceremony a total of 21national companies were honoured and they included five companies that had received the EnvironmentManagement Certification ISO 14001.

Director General, Mr. KhalidMohamed Fakhroo, theEnvironmental Affairs Directorateat the Ministry of Housing,Municipalities and Environmentheld a ceremony marking theWorld Ozone Day. During theevent, Mr. Fakhroo presented acommemorative plaque to Mr.Eduard Horn, Acting GeneralManager, in recognition of theCompany signing the VoluntaryOzone Charter, seeking to pre-serve a healthy environment atthe GPIC Complex and develop-ing vital environmental facilitiesfor the benefit of the Bahraincommunity. These include theGPIC Vegetable Garden and Charity Fish Farm.The Company’s management has always shown special concern for the environment and to this endit has formed an Environment Sub-committee that reports to the Safety, Health and EnvironmentCommittee. This Sub-committee has made considerable efforts in co-operation with the executivemanagement and employees for creating a clean, healthy and beautiful working environment through-out the Complex.

Shaikh Daij binS a l m a n A l K h a l i f a ,Assistant Undersecretaryfor Foreign Trade andPromot ion, H.E. theAmbassador of the Stateof Bahrain to the IslamicRepublic of Iran and anumber of senior officialsvisited the GPIC stand atthe Fair. They were welcomed by Mr. Zuhair Tawfiqi,Public Relations Manager. He briefed them about theCompany’s history and the production and export op-erations of GPIC products, namely Ammonia,
Methanol and Urea. He also told them in brief about
the Company’s various achievements.More than 2000 companies from 100 countries exhib-
ited their products at the Tehran Trade Fair.

The themeof the Conference was“ L e a d e r s h i p t o w a r d sInnovation and Creativity”.The Conference’s discus-sions were watched by Mr.Mustafa Al Sayed, GeneralManager, department man-agers and more than 50employees. At the end ofthe Conference, the em-ployees discussed the ideasof the working paper withthe Administration Manager, Maintenance Manager,Acting Training Superintendent and the Data
Processing Co-ordinator. The Conference’s deliber-ations carried on from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
Engineering Planning Seminar,hosted by the University ofBahrain, recently visited theGPIC Complex. They were wel-comed by Mr. Ahmed Nuruddin,Maintenance Manager, Mr.Zuhair Tawfiqi, Public RelationsManager and Mr. YasserA. Rahim, Safety & Secur i tySuperintendent. Mr. Yasser A. Rahim delivereda lecture about the Company’senvi ronmenta l protect ionachievements and the mea-sures taken to protect the safe-ty of the work environment. Thevisitors saw a scale model ofthe Complex and later touredthe plants.At the end of their visit, the delegates expressed their admiration for the Company’s growth and development,especially its concern with the environment. They expressed their best wishes to the Company and its man-agement.

OVERSEAS COURSES FOR COMPANY’S STAFF
TIME MANAGEMENT SEMINARpart of the varied plans and pro-grammes offered by the Training
Centre to enhance employees’ skills,the Training Centre organised acourse on “Time Management andWork Team Formation” during the pe-riod from 2nd to 6th September in co-operation with MEIRC Training andConsultancies.The course was attended by 18 em-ployees from various departments.The event was designed to updatethe participants’ knowledge of themost advanced techniques and meth-ods to improve their performance atthe work sites.
Fishing Competition andthe event proved to behighly competitive withthe total catch achievinga record of more than 470kg. With the participationof 17 teams representingthe various GPIC depart-ments, the fish caught in-cluded the popular vari-eties of Chanaad,Hamour, Shi’eri and otherkinds of fish.Prizes were awarded tothe winning teams byGPIC General Manager Mr. Mustafa Al Sayed at a cer-emony held at the Marina Club. The ceremony was at-tended by the Company’s senior executives and em-ployees.The Urea ‘A’ Team was in first position with the high-est catch followed by the runners-up the Methanol ‘C’Team. The Methanol ‘D’ Team was the top team forcatching the biggest fish followed by Methanol ‘A’Team. Meanwhile, the Urea ‘C’ Team won the first po-sition for catching the longest fish and the Safety andSecurity ‘A’ Team were the runners-up. On this occasion, Mr. Mustafa Al Sayed expressedpleasure for the successful event and record catches.He said without the enthusiasm and participation of allthe employees this annual event could not have beensuccessful. It is also an event that brings together allthe Company’s employees in a friendly atmospherethat has a positive outcome on the job environment.
This is further enhanced by the project’s charitableaims and cultivates a charitable spirit among all theworkers in the Company. He reiterated the Company’sdetermination to hold this competition on an annualbasis. He noted with satisfaction the record catchesachieved this year. This is further evidence of the re-sponse of the employees to this voluntary activitythrough greater participant numbers and more enthu-siasm. Due to the tremendous success of this event over thelast eight years, the General Manager will propose theformation of a fishing competition committee for in-dustrial companies, similar to the volleyball and soccertournaments organised by industrial firms.GPIC organises the fishing competition on an annualbasis as part of its diverse programmes for supportingcharities on the island by giving the fish catches tolocal charities and societies.

GPIC soccer team concluded the 2000sports season by winning the Second
Division Championship and promotion to the FirstDivision. The victory was made possible after an ex-citing draw game with Y.K. Al Moayyed & Sons team.GPIC General Manager, Mr. Mustafa Al Sayed,praised the team’s achievement that was made possi-ble through the player's’ skill and effective play.The spectators praised the GPIC team’s spectacularperformance in this game that showed the players’enthusiasm and strong performance that charac-terised all the games played during the LeagueChampionship. The players were responsible andshowed a high level of sportsmanship. He added theteam’s success in regaining their position was thefruit of collective efforts that truly reflected he one-family spirit prevailing within the Company. The team’ssuccess is also a demonstration of the support and co-operation from all members of the management and em-
ployees for their team.Congratulations to the GPIC team and we wish them allthe best in the future.
GPIC volleyball team scored an outstandingachievement in the current sports season 2000
by winning for the ninth time the Industrial CompaniesVolleyball League Competition. Our team was able to winthe final against BAS by 3-0 at the game recently heldunder the patronage of H.E. Shaikh Fawaz bin MohamedAl Khalifa, President of the General Organisation for Youthand Sport. He was represented by Mr. Mohamed Hamada,President of the Bahrain Volleyball Federation.The final match was attended by Mr. Mustafa Al Sayed,GPIC General Manager, Mr. Mahmood Al Mahmood,Chairman of the Companies Volleyball League Committeeand a number of officials from the participating companies.Mr. Mustafa Al Sayed praised the very high standard of theGPIC players during the match and all the games playedby the team during this season. He added that their co-op-eration and sportsmanship were the qualities that enabledthem to be a successful team.Mr. Mohamed Hamada, President of the Bahrain VolleyballFederation presented the League Shield and Trophy to Mr.

Blood Bank of Sulmaniya MedicalCentre and BDF Hospital in con-junction with GPIC, many employ-ees turned out to the company’sMedical Centre to make blood do-nations.A total of 90 employees gaveblood. This reflects the employeeshumanitarian feeling and their re-alisation of the implication andsignificance of their donations.

time in its history. In May of this year, GPIC won for the eighthsuccessive year the Gold Award from the Royal Society for thePrevention of Accidents UK. Such achievement could not havebeen possible without the fruitful co-operation between themanagement and all the employees. He added this is a furtherrecognition of the efforts made by all in enhancing awarenessand complying with all safety precautions. In his speech, he reiterated the significance of preventive andenvironmental awareness in the petrochemical industry andnoted that the Company was keen on maintaining the safetyand health of all the workers as well as keeping the environ-ment clean and tidy. This is noticed by any visitor to theComplex, he said.He added that the Company obtained the Environment QualityCertification ISO 14001 in November 1999 thanks to the effortsmade by the Company to protect the environment. Such effortsare demonstrated by the expansion of the Charity Fish Farm,setting up a palm-tree oasis as part of the landscaping projectin the Company in addition to the Charity Vegetable Garden
and waste-recycling project. Concluding, he said such achievements in the fields of safety,health and environment could not have been possible withoutthe support and directives of H.E. Board Chairman, membersof senior management, support given by the Ministry of Oil andIndustry and concerted efforts of all the employees and con-tractors. Later, H.E. Mr. Mohamed Abdul Rahman Al -Terkait, ManagingDirector and Mr. Mustafa Al Sayed, General Manager present-ed the best department awards in housekeeping and safety atthe workplace to the Electrical Workshop in the MaintenanceDepartment, office of the Engineering Section at the TechnicalServices Department and the Urea Plant in the PlantsOperation Department. Also honoured were the outstandingemployees in the areas of safety in various departments of theCompany. The ceremony included a prize raffle designed to enhance theemployees’ safety awareness. The exercise also urges them totake the necessary safety precautions at home or at the work-
place. The best contractor prize went toMechanical Contracting and Services Co.(MCSC) for its compliance with health, safetyand environmental considerations for its em-ployees.The event was also attended by a large numberof senior officials of Government organisations,industrial companies and GPIC departmentmanagers.
