Color is cool!• Color can cheer you up; calm you down, and even make

you smarter. • Color can make you feel good or feel sick. It can tire you

or increase your productivity.• Color is perceived differently depending on your age,

mood and mental health. • Savvy packaging designers use color to suggest product

attributes, such as cleanliness, flavor and freshness and global marketers tread carefully around cultural color biases.

* * *• The following quiz is adapted from a quiz that first

appeared in an issue of Business and Design. It was prepared with the help of Thome/Guido-Clark, San Francisco-based color consultants who work with automotive, textile, furniture and product designers.

First Day Opening Exercise

• Directions: Look only at your own paper and do not compare your drawing to someone else’s. Listen carefully and follow each direction as I read it.

1. Turn your page either direction (say vertical and horizontal). You can change markers at any time.

2. Draw a straight line from one edge of the paper to another edge.3. On or touching the line just drawn, draw 3 different shapes.4. Put 3 dots in one of the shapes.5. From one of the dots, draw a zigzag line from the dot to any edge of your

paper.6. From a different dot draw a freeform thick curvy line from the dot to a

different edge of your paper. This should be different from where you took the zigzag line.

7. You have now created negative spaces. What is a negative space? Discuss as a class what a negative space is. (there are no lines, shapes or colors just blank space)

8. Draw a series of parallel lines in one of the negative spaces. The lines should start and end on either a line or an edge of the paper. Lines should not be floating. Demonstrate on the board what a parallel line is compared to perpendicular, irregular but not intersecting, and intersecting lines (a series is usually more than three, parallel lines never intersect and they are going the same direction)

9. In a different negative space fill the area with solid color. (solid means completely filled in, but can have variation of hue)

Vocabulary:Vertical & Horizontal paper orientationShapeZigzagFreeformNegative spaceParallel linePerpendicular lineIrregular non-intersecting lineSeriesSolid color
