The History and Geography of
GERMANY
July 6 - 21, 2015 (SEMINAR, JULY 6-8, TRAVEL , JULY 9-21)
The trip is structured around course themes, but there will be ample free time in most cities to explore museums, exhibits, restaurants and German culture on your own. Travelers taking the course without credit are very welcome and included in all the institute travel experiences, tours and site visits.
Course InformationNote: The trip is a required component of the institute and must be taken to receive credit or PDPs for this institute. Students must complete three days of seminar-style institute classes before departure. These sessions will use multimedia presentations, readings and discussion to explore the history and geography of Germany. In addition, these sessions will review the academic requirements and due dates for institute portfolio and the travel aspects of the seminar. Dates of the institute classes are July 6-8. The travel portion of the institute is from July 9-21. All students must attend all days of the study/travel institute classes to receive credit. Travelers joining the trip but not taking the institute for credit are welcome to attend the seminars.

Course Cost Credit costs are separate and registered and paid for directly to Salem State University
The Experience This summer join Salem State University professors Stephen Matchak and Christopher Mauriello to study the history and geography of Germany. The institute begins on the Salem State University campus with three full days in the classroom studying the broad scope of German history and geography with special attention to town life in medieval Germany, the Reformation and religion, 19th c. state-building, the Third Reich and WWII, the Holocaust and contemporary Germany and the European Union. We then travel to Germany to explore the sites, museums, and culture in the following cities:
• Worms (city tour, Dom zu Worms)
• Heidelberg (city tour, Heidelberg Castle,
market square)
• Augsburg (Rathaus, historical churches,
market square)
• Munich (city tour, Nazi Documentation Center,
Dachau Concentration Camp)
• Regensburg (Cathedral of St. Peter, market square)
