AIMS & OBJECTIVES

Introduction of the Village hinchinim is a beautiful village situated on the banks of the River Sal. It is

known to be the biggest rural village of Goa having a predominant

Catholic population. It is bordered by the villages of Assolna and

Cuncolim to its south and Navelim to its north. In the vicinity one can also find

high schools, a post office, a football ground, a hospital, a Primary Health Centre,

a Sub Health Centre, Panchayat Ghar, a rural telephone exchange etc.

The Village Panchayat Chinchinim- Deussua is situated in the Taluka of

Salcete South Goa District. It has a population approx. 10,000 and according to

the census of 2011 the total population was 6908, with 3263 males and 3645

female population. The Panchayat consists of 11 wards and has 11 elected

representatives. (Male - 04 & Female - 07). There are 246 household of OBC, 50

households of SC and 948 households of STs.

The jurisdiction of Village Panchayat Chinchinim - Deussua has two

schools but it is closed. There are two Anganwadi with __ children. There is one

Primary Health Centre (PHC) & Sub Health Centre in Dandeavaddo. A Hospital

i.e. Dr. Nagzarkar Hospital & Clinic. The major source of income for the

Panchayat is the house tax, market auction/ market fees, Bank interest,

construction fees and other grants.

Chinchinim is known as Chinchone in Konkani and is known to have got its name from a Portuguese version of Chinch-oneam. Chinch means a tamarind tree in Konkani and according to many it is possible that the village was full of these tamarind trees in the olden days. Chinchinim is also famous for the feast of Mount Mary that is celebrated every year in the month of September which attracts thousands of devotees. Confrontations:

Chinchinim Village has 1 spring and it is mostly for picnic spots as the

water is also considered very well and Medicinal – This Spring is frequented

more often – called Bonkiwada, Sant Moddi.

Mario De Loyola Furtado Memorial (Library) near Village Panchayat Children’s Park, Chinchinim with students of two Schools i.e. of St. Mary of the Angels Convent High School and Mount Mary High School with the Strength of 26 students by constituting 6 groups on the topic “World without Plastic”.

Prabhat Ferry was conducted on 1st

October 2018, with the students of Mount

Mary High School, Chinchinim. The garbage cleaning was done in the

Chinchinim Bazaar and Church ground.

4. Awareness of

Biodiversity and its

Conservation Goa is a tiny state it has the Arabian sea on its west covering the entire

costline and on east by the western Ghats. The rich biodiversity of

different habitat such as forest, salt pans, wetland, paddy field, plateau,

river banks and ponds etc. makes it unique amongst other states.

Chinchinim village is situated in south Goa in salcete talukas with total

area of 1190 hectors. On the west side it has the banks of river Sal

which is a important source for the people living and rest is surrounded

by neighbouring villages. The major habitats types in Chinchinim are

wetlands, salt pans, paddy fields, hills, grasslands, mangroves etc.

Among the different habitat wetland in Durga is considered as the

important habitat for the migratory birds as well as residential birds it

also has a rich biodiversity site with many species of butterflies, dragon

flies, plants and animals. GBCN has marked it as hot spot for migratory

birds during migratory season. In the other habitats also recorded

diversed species of plants and animals.

BMC of Chinchinim has formed on 03/09/2017 with the guidelines

provided by the GSBB. Chinchinim BMC under the leadership of

chairperson organised many programmes the detail report is as follows:

a. Bird Awarness Programme: Considering Durga lake as

important habitat for migratory ducks in month of Feb a bird

awareness programme was held in Durga jointly by Goa forest dept

and GBCN. For the panchayat and members and villagers of

Chinchinim and Velim.

GBCN members showed various migratory and

residential birds to the villagers through their sighting

scope which was followed by a talk on the bird awareness

by Mr Pankaj Ladd. He explained the need to conserve

and protect the habitat since Durga lake is identified as

important habitat for migratory birds and species like

Northern Pintails, Gargany, were in large numbers ,

Ruddy shell duck , Knob-billed duck, black winged stilt,

black tailed Godwit were also spotted. During the Asia

wetland survey, GBCN recorded 60 species of birds in

the lake. It was a successful Programme.

b. Tree Plantation Drive: Chinchinim BMC

conducted a plantation drive involving student of

Mount Mary high school Miss Diksha Satadekar gave

a talk on importance of trees to the students which was

followed by plantation of sapling like jamum, tamarind,

and other wild varieties at various location in

Chinchinim the saplings were provided by Forest

Department

c. Jackal Awareness Programme: On nov 11

2018 Chinchinim BMC organised Jackal awareness

programme for the villagers of Deusssua as it is major

habitat for Jackals, researchers Joshna Dessai and

Vaibhavi Naik explained to the people importance of

Jackals in the ecosystem.
