will receive a share of £5.7million, helping to remove around 108,000 potholes from the region’s roads. The funding has been made available as part of the £250million Pothole Action Fund included in last month’s Budget, which will fix over four million pot- holes across the entire country by 2020/21. Cllr Peter Butlin, Portfolio Holder for Transport, said: “Warwickshire County Council’s highways team are already planning ahead on how they will work together with their contractors to use this additional funding from the Department for Transport to keep the road surface in good repair. These activities could include permanent pothole repairs or resurfacing to help prevent potholes from forming to ensure that we achieve value for money for the taxpayer.” Cllr Philip Johnson, chairman of the Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee, added: “We are extremely aware that potholes are a major concern of our residents and one of the most frequently visited pages on our website. We are pleased to receive this extra money to improve the county’s roads.” In total, the government is spending £6.1billion nationwide on local highways maintenance between 2015/16 and 2020/21 with the aim of preventing potholes and improving local roads, bridges and street lighting. 563509 The Baguette Bargein 2012,narrowly winning the ballot overformer Warwick and LeamingtonLabour MP, James Plaskitt, andretired Severn Trent Water engineer,
Fraser Pithie, from Stratford. The election used the supplemen-
tary system in which voters markedthe ballot paper with their first andsecond choices of candidate. If nocandidate got a majority of first pref-erence votes, the top two candidateswent on to a second round in whichsecond preference votes of the elimi-nated candidates were allocated tothem to produce a winner.
In the first round of voting in War-wickshire, Mr Plaskitt polled 22,308votes, compared to Mr Ball’s 21,410and Mr Pithie’s 20,571.
But in the second round, with thesecond choices of those who voted forMr Pithie re-allocated, Mr Ballemerged as the winner with a further11,821 votes, taking his total to33,231. Mr Plaskitt got just 2,892second choice votes and ended upwith a total of 25,200 votes. Theturnout was just 15.65 per cent.
In the 2015 General Election theturnout was 72.6 per cent.
Commissioners have a set four-yearterm of office and can serve a max-imum of two terms.

SHAKESPEARE-inspired homefurnishings and toiletries couldsoon be exported globally as part ofthe celebrations to mark the Bard’s400th anniversary.
The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust isworking with UK Trade and Investment(UKTI) West Midlands, which secured it aplace at January’s Museum Expressionstrade fair in Paris this month, where itshowed some of its exclusive productsfrom the new Shakespeare Inspiredranges.
The gifts and home items launched bythe Trust are inspired by the objects andplaces that shaped Shakespeare’s life andworks.
The toiletries range reflects the scentsof the wide variety of flowers mentionedin his works, and flowers and herbs thatgrow in the Trust’s own gardens in Strat-ford.
Fragrances include Romeo and Julietand Anne Hathaway’s Cottage Garden.
Adam Sheratt, Retail DevelopmentManager at the Trust, said: “While most ofour activity for the 400th anniversary is
about extending our cultural reach, UKTIis helping us to maximise the commercialopportunities that this year presents.
“All profits from licensing go back intothe charity, helping us to care for theShakespeare houses, supporting the inter-nationally important library and archive, and funding the learning programmes.”
Parminder Hayer, UKTI West Mid-lands’ adviser to the Trust, said: “Shake-speare is arguably already one of thecountry’s best exports.
“For example, there have been publica-tions and productions of Hamlet in morethan 75 different languages.
“Initial reaction to the products has, asyou would expect, been very favourableindeed, and we are only too pleased towork with the Trust to help it maximise itsexport potential.”

Householders tune in to TV supportNEW fourth generation mobile services, known as 4G, that are being switched on inAlcester might interfere with Freeview TVsignals, it has been suggested.
Experts have said that 4G signals at 800MHz can overload the receivers in TVs andset-top boxes.
Signs of interference include the loss ofchannels or sound, pictures going blocky, freezing or the TV screen going blank orshowing a ‘No Signal’ message.
A company called at800 has beenappointed by the government’s Culturedepartment to offer free support to house-
holders who experience issues.Ben Roome, chief executive officer of
at800, said: “If you rely on Freeview forTV, we can arrange for one of our accred-ited engineers to visit homes to fix Free-view interference caused by 4G signals, free of charge. If you use Freeview along-side other TV services, we can send free fil-ters which block mobile signals that areeasy to fit to the aerial lead connecting toTVs and set-top boxes.”

NEARLY four times asmany new car buyerschoose connectivitygadgets over safetyupgrades when speci-fying their vehicle.
New research bywww.whatcar.com showsthat, despite the nation’sapparent preoccupationwith road safety, drivers areshelling out for items likesatellite navigation, digitalradio and Bluetooth capa-bility rather than safetysystems such as lane-keeping assistance andblindspot monitoring.
Automated emergency
braking (AEB) is the mostpopular safety systemselected, but less than 20per cent of drivers choose itas an option. Six in 10 newcar buyers will not upgradewith any safety features atall.
In contrast, 64 per centspend extra cash to set upsat-nav and half of alldrivers upgrade to get aDAB radio — at a cost sim-ilar to the £200 estimated toinstall AEB.
The research alsoshowed that comfort andstyling also rank higherthan safety items for newcar buyers, with featureslike heated seats (60 percent) and alloy wheels (42per cent) being chosen inmore specifications.
Jim Holder, EditorialDirector ofwww.whatcar.com, said:“When it comes to talkingabout what’s important in acar, most people are vocif-erous about how vitalsafety is.
“However, it seems to bea different matter whennew car buyers are sat infront of the salesman.
“British car buyers areclearly going for style oversubstance.
“It’s beneficial to havecreature comforts in yourcar, especially if you spenda lot of time driving.
“But it’s quite shockingto think that features whichcould save peoples’ livesare taking a back seat tohaving the right soundquality on the radio, espe-cially when those itemsoften cost around the sameas the safety options.”

Adams rues‘soft goals’ inFrome defeatCARL Adams says Stratford Town “can’t believe”they were beaten at Frome, but has bemoaned hisside’s wasteful finishing at the BlindmansBrewery Stadium on Saturday.
Town missed a string of good chances to take an earlylead in Somerset and were made to pay in the second half.
The defeat ensured Town are still not mathematicallysafe from relegation, with two points still required toensure Stratford a second season in the Evo-Stik SouthernLeague Premier Division.
“In many ways it’s the same old story as I can’t believethat we have lost this match,” said Adams.
“I felt we controlled the first half, but if you don’t takeyour chances it will cost you in the end.
“We missed two sitters early on and then we got pun-ished by conceding two soft goals in the second half.
“So we’re still not safe yet and we know it will be diffi-cult against Poole on Tuesday.
“They will be looking to clinch the league title as well asgetting revenge for our win down there a couple of weeksago.”
Frome upped the tempo after the break and went aheadon 55 minutes.
Jon Davies whipped in a cross from the right for JakeJackson to shoot against James Cutts and Dan Cleverleypounced on the loose ball to fire home.
And 12 minutes later, they doubled their lead whenDavies floated over a left wing corner and it glanced off theunfortunate Marcel Simpson and into the net past the help-less Cutts.
Bideford are the only team in the relegation zone whocan catch Town, although they would need to win all oftheir remaining four matches to stand any chance ofavoiding the drop.
