Legends

of LeadershipIN THE BLACK COMMUNITY

Yolanda F . Presley VisionaryIf You Want it, Then You Better Put a Ring On it!

The well-known story about Naomi and Ruth, is one that will open your eyes to the favor of God that is resting on your life. After going back to the town of Bethlehem, Ruth immediately went to work. She got up and went to glean in the fields behind the harvesters. See, favor shows up when you decide to work while waiting. While you are waiting on the promises to manifest, make sure God finds you working. You must do what you know to do until God tells you what to do. When Boaz shows up and inquires about Ruth, he finds out that she is a Moabitess who came back with Naomi. He says to Ruth, “My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with my servant girls. Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the girls. I have told the men not to touch you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.” (Ruth 2:8-9 NIV) What you must understand is that Ruth didn’t go looking for a hand-out. She wasn’t looking for Big Poppa to pay her rent or buy her clothes. In verse13 Ruth says, “May I continue to find favor in your eyes my lord. You have given me comfort and have spoken kindly to your servant-though I do not have the standing of one of your servant girls.” In other words, Ruth was thanking him for the favor, even though she wasn’t like the other girls. There was no need for Boaz to think the cookie jar was open just because he was showing her favor. God will cause favor to fall on your life without you having to give-up something to get your bills paid. A black Charger sitting on 24’s with music and tinted windows, shouldn’t move you anymore. Killa Joe coming around with four gold teeth at the top and five at the bottom, wearing Coogie with a wad of $100 bills, shouldn’t move you anymore. It’s time to let the devil know, “I’m not like the other girls.” The candy store is shut down and “ain’t no test-drives on this lot.” Women of God, rise-up in your faith and start declaring the favor of God over your life. Post a “No Vacancy” sign over your purpose and put the devil on notice that he won’t be kicking off his Nikes in your house, leaving his Dickies in your closet or his Hanes in your drawer. No, it’s not if you like it – it’s if you want it then you’d better put a ring on it. If not, get to stepping because I serve a God who will “supply all of my needs, according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19) God is tired of secret lovers. He’s looking for a real love. I can imagine that He sometimes wants to say, “Your body is here with me, but your mind is on the other side of town,” because He knows “you’re cheating in the next room, making plans

to be with Joe soon.” Now is the time to renew your faith and commitment to the Father. Our God is a jealous God.

If we are going to trust God, then we have to trust Him. We need resilient faith in this hour. We need a faith that never quits, never gives up, and is tough enough to make it through any storm. It’s critical that you understand that tested faith is mature faith. When God allows you to go through a testing of your faith, it’s for you, not for Him. When you’re faced with financial difficulties, relationship worries, rebellious children, employment issues, and family drama, your faith must be strong enough to resist the temptations of the enemy to retreat. God wants you to know that “He knows the thoughts He has towards you, thoughts of good and not evil, to bring you to an expected end.” (Jeremiah 32:11) If what you see isn’t what God promised, then it’s not your expected end. He’s simply preparing you, through your process, for what He has in store. Don’t be moved by what you see in the natural because resilient faith only sees by the Spirit. God is moving, even when you can’t feel Him, can’t trace Him, can’t see Him and can’t touch Him. He has already given your Boaz instructions, to let you glean the field. He told the men to leave some wheat behind for Ruth on purpose. In other words, God told me to tell you that the Spirit of Favor is going to bring you sweat-less victories. Many of you have had to fight for every penny and every piece of bread over the last few years. Life has been rough, but God is saying, the struggle is over. I know your haters don’t want you to make it, don’t expect you to survive this storm, but He’ll make your enemies your foot-stool. He’ll prepare a table before you, in the presence of your enemies. What they fail to realize is that God is using them to set you up for your blessing. He’s taking you through publicly and He will turn around and bless you publicly. No one will get the glory but God!

Women of God, don’t retreat. Don’t sell yourself short because times are tough, money is tight, and you don’t see any relief in sight. Hold on, help is on the way. I’ve never seen the righteous forsaken nor seed begging for bread. Trust in the Lord, lean not unto your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

May the Favor of God run you down and take you over!

Beyonce almost got it right, but she forgot there were remnants of single and satisfied women who have decided to wait on God. There is no such thing as a 30 day free trial-period in the Kingdom. No, he can’t test before buying, so he’d better seek God before even stepping to me. Yes, this is a very difficult time in many of our lives but one thing is for sure, God will make good on every promise He has made. When your back is against the wall and it seems as though your life is falling apart, right in front of your very eyes, it’s easy to think that to retreat is the answer. The desire to go back to familiar territory, doing the things you used to do in order to make it, becomes stronger and stronger. Your spirit is saying wait on God, but your flesh is saying go for it. What do you do when what you know is right, doesn’t seem to be working, and what you know is wrong can take care of all of your needs?

Acts 27 introduces us to a storm called the Euroclydon;

which was a strong, violent wind storm from the east. However, Acts 27 is not the first time we see this type of storm. It was first introduced in Exodus 14. The Israelites were facing eminent danger and devastation at the threat of Pharoah's army pursuing from behind, impassable mountains on the left and the right, and The Red Sea in front of them.

I've preached this story many times. But one morning, while preparing for a ministry assignment, I heard the voice of God tell me to tell His people, “You can survive the perfect storm.” In an instant, this very familiar Bible story took on a whole new life. Suddenly, a hidden, but very apparent truth in the text was illuminated right before my eyes. Despite the complaints of the people, Moses obeyed the command of God in Exodus verses 15 and 16, lifted his rod and stretched his hand over the water. Immediately, a Euroclydon rose up and opened up the Red Sea in front of them.

He was standing there at the edge of the sea with over 2 million Israelite people standing behind him wondering what they were going to do. Can you imagine how the complaints must have escalated as a bleak situation became compounded by an unexplainable storm? But the storm was purposeful. This storm was the pathway to their freedom. It was the storm that created a pathway for them to leave the oppression that they had known as home, for so long. Even in Acts 27, the Euroclydon was purposeful for some men on the island of Melita.

Eurclydons represent some of the greatest storms of your life. But I submit to you that no matter how impossible the situations may be that surround you right now, the Euroclydon represents the greatest opportunities of your life opening up for you. Today, it's time to celebrate the open doors that come through unexpected storms. God wastes nothing. And since He wastes nothing, don't waste time complaining about the storm. Make It Count.

You Can Survive The Perfect Storm

Dwight Howard is hard at work and oozing sweat out of every pore in a tucked-away, nondescript gym . Howard knows he can do it physically because he has a body that might make Adonis blush . His muscles have muscles on top of them, giving him both that quick-twitch explosion and also an awesome amount of power . The mission for Howard is

two-fold: Be enough of a rock to take a pounding from 300-and-something-pound Shaquille O’Neal, while also being athletic and agile enough to continue setting records for blocking shots and rebounding the ball .

And the end result is a body that looks as if it’s carved from stone . His bulging shoulders like something out of a Frankenstein flick, while the waist is a narrow 32 inches, giving Howard an imposing V-frame shape .

In May 2001, at the age of 40, she was diagnosed with Stage I breast cancer (ductal carcinoma in situ). In July 2001, she underwent a lumpectomy. The nickel-size tumor was removed, margins and lymph nodes were clear. She decided on full cancer treatment consisting of 4 monthly sessions of chemotherapy, followed by 6 weeks of daily radiation therapy. Remarkably, she continued to work daily throughout these treatments and therapy.

In November 2005, she was diagnosed with reoccurrence Stage IV breast cancer. Linda underwent surgery to remove the tumor in her left pectoral muscle. She immediately began 28 weekly chemotherapy treatments, followed by 6 weeks of daily radiation therapy. Keeping a normal routine, Linda continued to work full time while undergoing these treatments. In December 2006, the cancer was re-discovered behind her breastbone. On February 23, 2007, she began multiple rounds of

different chemotherapy treatments at Florida Hospital in Orlando. Each followed by 30 days of radiation treatments until November 2008. While undergoing weekly and bi-weekly treatments, she maintained a full-time work schedule. In March 2009,

she developed problems with normal skills. The breast cancer

had developed and spread to her brain. 5 Brain lesions were discovered

an emergency room visit. She immediately underwent 2 weeks of board spectrum radiation. Due to possible seizures while driving, her employer placed her on short-term disability for the very first time in 8 years.

During her 8 years, Linda Sue underwent 11 different rounds of BC chemotherapy and 5 different rounds of radiation. As a result, a unique occurrence called "radiation recall" took place, when certain types of chemotherapy and radiation occur simultaneously. The BC eventually returned to

LINDA SUE RUDY - 48 , ascended into heaven as an angel. Linda enjoyed a wide variety of activities to include attending rock concerts, country western dancing and golfing with family and friends. Linda loved most the special times she spent with her two sisters and mother shopping outlet malls and girls weekends away. She volunteered numerous hours with several local charities raising monies for The Komen for the Cure; Strides for Breast Cancer; Big Brothers & Big Sisters; BMW Ultimate Drive and Festival of Trees. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother to her animals, daughter, sister and friend. Linda Sue is survived by multitudes of loving family members and friends throughout Florida, Michigan, Georgia, Virginia, Texas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, California and Alaska. Linda was an active member of The First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Melbourne, FL.

her brain, spread to both lungs, spinal cord, and both legs. On November 22, 2009, after being told that the BC had spread to her lungs, she told the attending nurse "Don't count me out!”

On December 19, 2009, the original "Fight Like A Girl" of Central Florida finished her race and beat us all home.

L ike A Gi r l In Linda's own words on

March 14, 2006: “I am only one of thousands and

thousands of women who have survived

and continue to battle this disease. It is imperative to

believe in your medical team of doctors and do everything humanly possible regarding preventive measures and treatments. My secret to breast cancer survival is to "attack it" with all of your heart and might and do not accept anything less of yourself. Always keep a "positive outlook,” keep going, and surround yourself with only positive people and positive attitudes. Early detection is the "key.” Together, with your team of doctors, family, friends and your belief in The Lord, breast cancer is a treatable and a beatable disease.”

WITH DEMICA PAIGEFitness

Q: My husband and I are planning to have a baby. Can I continue to train, and how should I train

while I am pregnant? Tangela H., Orlando, FLDEMICA PAIGE: First things first, all pregnant women

should check with their health care provider before beginning or continuing a current exercise program. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the exercise guidelines and precautions for pregnant women are as follows for women who do not have additional risk factors. Some risk factors include but are limited to poorly controlled type 1 diabetes, seizures, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, extreme obesity, extreme low body weight, a history of a very sedentary/inactive lifestyle, heavy smoking, etc:

Moderate exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes ♦for most, if not all days of the week is strongly recommended.

Pregnant women who are experienced and ♦knowledgeable about proper training and technique may continue their training program by making the appropriate adjustments. Previously inactive women can benefit from regular exercise during pregnancy but a program should be designed to complement the physical capabilities.

Pregnancy alters the heart rate and oxygen consumption/ ♦breathing; therefore, exercise at a comfortable level at which you can maintain a conversation.

After the first trimester (the first 14 weeks of pregnancy), ♦refrain from exercises that require lying on the back (a supine position). Due to the increasing size of the uterus, a supine position restricts the blood flow to the heart.

Abdominal exercises, bench presses, all other exercises and stretches on the bench, stability ball or floor are prohibited. Perform alternate exercises in an upright position or standing. (Example:

substitute lying abdominal crunches with seated abdominal crunches.)

While pregnant, your center of gravity changes. It ♦is advised that some pregnant women, especially previously inactive women, use machine weights to provide more stability and support. (Example: substitute standing dumbbell curls with the bicep curl machine.)

Improper breathing is common among individuals ♦who are not taught proper training technique. Pregnant women should pay close attention to proper breathing while exercising. Do not hold your breath. Holding the breath during exertion places excessive pressure on the abdominal contents and pelvis floor. The general rule for proper breathing is to exhale on exertion or in the lifting phase of every exercise repetition.

Do not continue to exercise past your point of fatigue, ♦nor should you reach the point of exhaustion.

In some cases, especially for women with little training ♦experience, non-weight-bearing exercises such as cycling or swimming are strongly recommended to reduce injury or risk.

Avoid exercises that may cause potential for even mild ♦trauma to the abdominal.

Minimize large increases in body temperature by ♦drinking at least 8 cups of water per day and wear layers of clothing to keep the body temperature low.

By following your physician’s prenatal recommendations and a properly designed prenatal exercise program, you will maintain cardiovascular and muscular fitness throughout the duration of your pregnancy.

BREAST SELF EXAM It is a good idea to get in the

habit of doing monthly self-exams starting at age

20. Examining yourself on a regular basis lets you

become familiar with your breasts, so you will notice

any changes that may occur. Breast self-exams should

not replace regular mammograms and clinical breast

exams. To find out how to perform a breast self exam,

ask your doctor.

Ten Steps To Prevent Breast Cancer: Ann Kulze, MD

1. Maintain a healthy body weight (BMI less than 25) throughout your

life. Weight gain in midlife, independent of BMI, has been shown to significantly increase

breast cancer risk. Additionally, an elevated BMI has been conclusively shown to increase the risk of

post-menopausal breast cancer.

2. Minimize or avoid alcohol. Alcohol use is the most well established dietary risk factor for

breast cancer. The Harvard Nurses' Health study, along with several others, have shown consuming more than one alcoholic beverage a day can increase breast cancer risk by as much as 20-25 percent.

3. Consume as many fruits and vegetables as possible. Eat seven or more servings daily.

The superstars for breast cancer protection include all cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower); dark leafy greens (collards, kale, spinach) ; carrots and tomatoes. The superstar fruits include citrus, berries and cherries.

4. Exercise regularly the rest of your life. Many studies have shown that regular exercise

provides powerful protection against breast cancer. Aim for 30 minutes or more of moderate aerobic activity (brisk walking) five or more days a week. Consistency and duration, not intensity, are key!

5. Do your fats right! The type of fat in your diet can affect your breast cancer risk. Minimize

consumption of omega-6 fats (sunflower, safflower, corn and cottonseed oils), saturated fats and trans fats. Maximize your intake of omega-3 fats, especially from oily fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines, lake trout and herring). Consume monounsaturated oils (canola, olive oil, nuts/seeds, avocados) as your primary fat source, as these foods have potential anticancer

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the United States. More than 182,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. The chance of a woman having breast cancer sometime during her life is 1 in 8. Early detection is key in the treatment of breast cancer. There are steps you can take to detect breast cancer early when it is most treatable.

It is suggested that every woman adhere to the

following screening guidelines:

MAMMOGRAPHY The most important screening

test for breast cancer is the mammogram. A

mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. It

can detect breast cancer up to two years

before the tumor can be felt by you or

your doctor. Women ages 40 and older

who are at average risk of breast cancer

should have a mammogram once a year.

Women at high risk should have yearly

mammograms along with an MRI starting at age 30.

Avoid purchasing foods from

fast food restaurants

Prevention / Early Detection Is Key!

TIPS FOR A BETTER MAMMOGRAMGet regular mammograms. Work with your •doctor to set up a schedule that is right for your age and situation.

Follow up on your test results. Don’t assume •your results were normal. Call your doctor’s office to confirm.

Try to have your mammogram at the same •mammography center each year. This way, your results can be compared from year to year.

CLINICAL BREAST EXAM (CBE) During a CBE, your doctor examines your breasts and the surrounding area for any possible signs of breast cancer. Your doctor checks for:

Changes in the size or shape of your •breasts

Skin changes, including rashes, •dimpling or redness

Other abnormal changes, such as •

lumps or discharge from the nipple

Women in their 20’s or 30’s should have a CBE •about every three years as part of a general health exam.

Women over 40 should have a CBE once a year.•*Screening recommendations and mammography tips were adapted from guidelines by the American Cancer Society.

properties. Specifically, canola oil is a good source of omega-3 fats; extra virgin olive oil is a potent source of antioxidant polyphenols, including squalene; and nuts and seeds provide you with the cancer protective mineral, selenium.

6. Do your carbs right! Minimize consumption of the high glycemic index, "Great White

Hazards" - white flour, white rice, white potatoes, sugar and products containing them. These foods trigger hormonal changes that promote cellular growth in breast tissue. Replace these "wrong" carbs with whole grains and beans/legumes. Beans/legumes because of their high fiber and lignan content are especially special.

7. Consume whole food soy products regularly, such as tofu, tempeh, edamame, roasted

soy nuts, soy milk and miso. Only consume organic, non-GMO (genetically modified) soy. Epidemiologic studies have shown a positive association between soy consumption and reduced breast cancer risk.

8. Minimize exposure to pharmacologic estrogens and xeno-estrogens. Do not take

prescription estrogens unless medically indicated. Lifetime exposure to estrogen plays a fundamental role in the development of breast cancer. Also avoid estrogen-like compounds found in environmental pollutants, such as pesticides and industrial chemicals. Buy organic produce if you can afford it; otherwise, thoroughly wash all non-organic produce. Minimize exposure to residual hormones found in non-organic dairy products, meat and poultry.

9. Take your supplements daily. A multivitamin, 500-1,000 mg of vitamin C in divided doses,

200-400 IUs of vitamin E as mixed tocopherols, and pharmaceutical grade fish oil. Also take 200 mcg of the mineral selenium or eat one to two Brazil nuts as an alternative. If you have a chronic medical condition or take prescription drugs, consult your physician first.

10. Maintain a positive mental outlook. Engage in self-nurturing behaviors

regularly. Develop rich, warm and mutually beneficial relationships with family and friends. Get adequate sleep (7-8 hours per night). The mind-body associations with breast cancer are significant.

Your chance of having a heart attack is the same as someone who has already had one. And if you have a heart attack or stroke, it makes it more likely that you will have another. However, you can lower your risk by keeping your blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol under control.

so what can i do to prevent heart disease and stroke?Talk with your doctor about what your goals should be for blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol. Your health care team can tell you about changes in diet, activity, and medication that will help you reach your goals.

Diabetes, Heart Disease, anD stroke

Your chances of getting heart disease or having a stroke are even higher if:One or more members of your family had a • heart attack at an early age—before age 55 for men or 65 for women You carry extra weight around your waist • Your LDL (bad) cholesterol or triglycerides, • another type of blood fat, are high Your HDL (good) cholesterol is low you have • high blood pressure You are a smoker•

You can also take these steps to keep your heart and blood vessels healthy:

Follow a “heart-healthy” meal plan that your • doctor or a dietitian designs for you . Be physically active for 30 to 60 minutes most • days . For example, go for a walk every day . Take your medicines as directed and keep taking • them, even after you’ve reached your goals . If you smoke, quit . • Ask your doctor if you should begin an aspirin • regimen to prevent heart disease or stroke .

did you know that the most serious health problem for people with diabetes is heart disease?

Delivering WhatCommunities Deserve!

T he early 1900’s American stock brokerage firm, E.F. Hutton & Co. became one of the nation’s most respected financial firms,

leaving an indelible impression on the American market with the slogan “When E.F. Hutton speaks, people listen.” Indisputably, similar things happen when one of Florida’s most outspoken Representatives steps up to the plate. Responsible for increasing funding for local veterans services, securing funding for the high-speed rail line, sunRail, and bringing about $19 million in “earmarks” into her district this year alone; she not only performs, but “she Delivers!” Congresswoman Corrine Brown of Jacksonville, leading Florida’s Third Congressional District, has stood without opposition in the last three elections for her seat in the U.s. House of Representatives; and with the emergence of the little-known and moderately funded candidates in this year’s race, she is almost a shoe-in for leadership of the 9-county district that she represents, again.

The incumbent Democrat has served in office since 1992 with constituents residing from Jacksonville to Orlando; including largely minority communities to the east and west, such as sanford, Eatonville, Ocala, and Gainesville. Although not without controversy or complaint, the Chairwoman of the Transportation subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Waste Materials is committed to the constituents and communities that she represents in the district designed to ensure greater minority representation in the state of Florida. Gospel Now speaks with Congresswoman Corrine Brown in the wake of her 2010 race for the retention of the Congressional seat that she has occupied for almost two decades.

Congresswoman Corrine Brown

Page 29: GospelNow 7th Edition

Gospel Now: You have been re-elected multiple times. Considering your opponents and your constituents, is there any grave concern that this time will be any different?

Congresswoman Brown: Not particularly, although the 2010 upcoming midterm elections are going to be challenging for the Democratic Party overall, I am confident that the Democrats will maintain a majority in both the House and Senate. I have run un-opposed in the last 3 election cycles, and do not expect this challenger, who has practically no political experience and does not live in the district he wants to represent to make any serious inroads. However, as has been made clear by the mainstream media, no race should ever be taken lightly or for granted, particularly in this mid-term election cycle for any incumbent Member, irrespective of party affiliation.

Are you finding that you are doing anything different in this campaign, than in times past?

As in past campaigns, I will continue to campaign on my “Corrine Delivers” motto. This session, that motto is clearly exemplified in the vast amount of resources and federal funding I brought back to my constituents of Florida’s third congressional district. In fact, I ranked third among all House Members in bringing federal funding to my area; I helped to secure $664 million, which makes up 56 percent of all earmarks by area lawmakers in the past three budgets. In fact, in 2010 alone, I helped secure $429 million in Member priority projects, and ranked third among the House's 435 members. As I have said in the past, different members emphasize different things in their respective agendas, and obtaining Member priority projects has always been a top agenda item for me. This includes millions of dollars in funding for Veterans’ facilities, transportation and infrastructure projects, education, defense, and health care facilities, as well as judicial/civil rights programs.

You serve on a couple of different committees in the House. What does your position on these committees mean for Florida voters and the nation at large?

In my position on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I serve as the Chair on the Railroads subcommittee, as well as on various other subcommittees, including Aviation and Coast Guard. This position allows me to bring millions of dollars of

resources not only to the third district, but to the state of Florida as a whole. I was also crucial to the decision which led the state to receive stimulus dollars to begin work on a high speed rail line between Tampa and Orlando, something which, in upcoming years, I will work hard to expand statewide. It has also allowed me to work to bring back essential funding for the district’s under-developed areas: including projects like sewer replacement, road repair, money for area buses, which were generally ignored by past federal representatives. In my other committee of jurisdiction, Veterans Affairs, I have worked to bring a veterans facility to the Orlando area, brought hundreds of millions of dollars to upgrade the Gainesville VA hospital, and have led the charge here in Congress to fight for increases in Veterans’ health care and educational benefits on a nation level.

People know you everywhere by the campaign slogan “Corrine Delivers!” What have you delivered during your tenure in Congress thus far, that makes you the most proud?

As I mentioned earlier, the initial phase of high speed rail for Florida was huge for me, as well as for Florida residents. The hospitals and upgrades at VA facilities will have a tremendously positive impact on the extraordinarily high number of veterans that retire to Florida. I have also obtained funding for projects that are of great benefit to the African American community, including funding for HBCU’s, youth mentoring programs, initiatives to fend off youth violence, and numerous health care projects that serve working poor communities, as well as many projects to upgrade the infrastructure of poor, and previously overlooked communities.

Championing, advocating and fighting are all synonymous with the name “Corrine Brown.” To what or whom would you attribute the “fight” in you?

I would say my upbringing in Jacksonville prior to and during the civil rights era. Like many African American Members, I was inspired by Martin Luther, and his wife, Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, Shirley Chisholm and many other national figures. Yet locally, I was particularly inspired by a woman who I’ve always considered to be my mentor, Ms. Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry; the first African-

American woman elected to the Florida Legislature, and also Dade County's first black female attorney. Nothing could stand in the way of her fight to change the terrible ills that our society, and in particular, African Americans in the United States, faced during the civil rights period. When she died in a Tallahassee car accident in 1979, I vowed to take her mantle and continue the fight, and I was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1982, and have been fighting for my constituents and civil rights for minorities on the state level for 10 years, and the federal level for 18 years.

Most recently, the Florida Supreme Court decided to allow Amendment 6 to remain on the November 2, 2010 ballot. What does Amendment 6 propose, and what should voters be aware of as it relates to this amendment?

Amendment 6 would require the legislature to use geographic boundaries to draw districts and disregard previous voting patterns. Voters should be wary because it would allow the legislature to ignore the will of the voters in certain communities and dilute the vote of minorities who are often spread across large geographic areas. The legacy of racism that created certain settlement patterns is one reason a federal court ordered Florida to draw the boundaries that exist today. I firmly believe that if Amendment 6 passes, it would be a giant step backwards for “communities of interest” across the state. I see Amendment 6 as merely a subtle attempt to dilute minority representation on every level, federal, state and local governments. Minority communities do not live in compact, cookie cutter like neighborhoods. The

amendment’s chief requirement of compactness would clearly defeat the ability of the Legislature to draw viable access and Majority-Minority seats. This Amendment is nothing more than a deceitful attempt to turn the clock back to the days before 1992 when Florida did not have any African-American representation in Congress for 129 years, and I had to fight with the courts back then to ensure three congressional seats were provided for African American Members. Clearly, given that minorities make up more than one-third of the state of Florida’s population, I see any attempt to decrease minority political representation as a very serious civil rights issue our state could face in court.

Should you be victorious in the upcoming election, what can Floridians in the Third Congressional District expect as a result of your continued representation in the House of Representatives?

I will continue to fight every single day for the constituents of Florida’s third district. In the upcoming session, it looks very likely that the number one issue for the district, as well as the state of Florida and the nation as a whole, will be to bring down the number of unemployed Americans and jump start our economy. The economic stimulus plan and TARP were good beginnings and certainly saved the country from a much more severe recession, yet more needs to be done. In my area of specialization, Transportation and Infrastructure, I will fight hard to make sure that our country maximizes this funding to get our citizens back to work. Statistically, for every $1 billion invested in our nation’s infrastructure, approximately 42,000 quality jobs are created. That

said, I will be pushing hard to get the six year funding for the surface transportation bill on the House Floor and passed into law to ensure that my committee is doing all it can to reignite our economy and deliver jobs again to the hard working people of this great nation.

iMMiGration leGislation DreaM aCt – DelayeD in senate

Sept. 21st, 2010 - Metro West Golf ClubSponsored By Anthony-Smith Law

On Tuesday, September 21, 2010, the Defense Appropriation Bill was defeated on the Senate floor by a vote of 56 to 42 so the DREAM Act

could not be attached to this bill . Senator Reid and President Obama remain committed to passage of the DREAM Act and promise to recall the legislation to the Senate floor soon .

The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, or “DREAM Act,” would provide a pathway to legal status for the thousands of undocumented students who graduate from high school each year .

The DREAM Act addresses the plight of young undocumented immigrants growing up in the United States who wish to go to college and obtain lawful employment . The bill allows current, former, and future undocumented high-school graduates and GED recipients a pathway to U .S . citizenship through college or the armed services .

An undocumented high-school graduate or GED recipient would be eligible to adjust to conditional lawful permanent resident (LPR) status if they have been physically present in the United States for at least five years and were younger than 16 when they first entered the country .

This LPR status would be granted on a conditional basis and valid for six years, during which time the student would be allowed to work, go to school, or join the military .

The “conditional” status would be removed and the person granted LPR status after six years once the student has either completed two years in a program for a bachelor’s degree or higher degree or has served in the armed services for at least two years and, if discharged, has received an honorable discharge .

DREAM Act students would not be eligible for federal education grants . Students would, however, be eligible for graduate or GED recipient would be eligible to adjust to conditional lawful permanent resident (LPR) status if they have been physically present in the United States for at least five years and were younger than 16 when they first entered the country .

This LPR status would be granted on a conditional

basis and valid for six years, during which time the student would be allowed to work, go to school, or join the military .

Students would, however, be eligible for federal work study and student loans, and individual states would not be restricted from providing financial aid to the students .

There are approximately 1 .5 million undocumented children in the United States, and each year tens of thousands graduate from primary or secondary school, often at the top of their classes .

It is estimated that roughly 2 .1 million individuals would meet the DREAM Act’s basic age, length of residence, and age of arrival requirements upon enactment . Additionally, passage of the DREAM Act will increase enrollment in colleges and universities, increase enrollment in the U .S . armed forces, keep talented students in the U .S ., and provide individuals an opportunity to raise their standard of living and contribute to the tax system .

The DREAM Act will unlock the door to the American dream for thousands of young people who have uncertain futures because of their inability to continue their education, work, or join the military .

GN: Previous interviews indicate that your life is the substance of your stage

material. How do you find the humor in what is sometimes humbling and humiliating?

SV: Comedians are very special creatures, we have a gift of looking at the same

thing that everyone else looks at and seeing a different picture. Sometimes it can be as simple as sitting in a public restroom stall, and wondering…”Wow these walls around this stall are very short, there is no privacy! When people walk in the bathroom they can see my knees and my eyeballs at the same time!” If that’s not humbling and humiliating I don’t know what is!

Do you have writers that contribute to the development of your material or is it all you?

Its all me! I can’t say I have a team of writers. It would be nice, I am taking applications. But everyone I come in contact with is a writer to me because we all say and do things that at some point are funny and interesting. Of course, when you have a pregnant wife and five kids and a dog that thinks he’s a cat its easy to come up with material! It’s up to me to take notice of those experiences.

Is there a particular process for your creative development? Do you have to establish a certain type of environment or be in a particular mood to come up with the material?

I'm always in the mood for coming up with material! My wife has even given me the eye for sneaking and writing a note or two during church service! I don’t really have a process or system that I follow for developing material; I try not to structure the creative experience because I like it to be as raw and unique as possible. The more real the experience the funnier it is. I am a very structured person overall though and I have been teased by other comedians for how organized I am. For instance, I have all of my jokes written down and filed by year. I also keep lists of the jokes that I do at each of my performances so that when I get booked again by them I will know what jokes I've already done there so I can keep my performances as fresh as possible.

You came out of MegaFest® in 2004 with a project idea that has been evolving over the last couple of years. Tell us a little bit about it; and where you are in the fulfillment of that vision?

After coming back from Megafest I found it abundantly clear that there are a lot of people in this world that appreciate Christian based events with good entertainment. So I created a comedy

LoVe Life and LaUGH!show called Soulfunny, which eventually led to the launching of our company Soulfunny Entertainment. We’ve created a brand of quality Christian and Family Entertainment that includes a comedy tour, a radio show and an annual cruise so far. We're also in the writing stage of a stage play that fits in very well with our overall vision. Our vision is to provide quality; Christian based entertainment for anyone who wants to go to an event and not have to comprise their Christianity. We include gospel music and dance in our shows and even though we don't hit people over the head with religion, they will feel God's presence in the atmosphere! It’s an environment that everyone feels comfortable in, which allows us to show God's love to people that maybe wouldn't even go to church.

There are a lot of people putting on so called Christian events one weekend and then turn around the next and throw an event that you can't even show the flyer to your kids, but Soulfunny Entertainment is different because Christian events is all that we do and we really see it as a ministry. Everything we do is done with a spirit of excellence, which believe it or not also really sets us apart from a lot of the other promoters out there.

The Bible says “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine.” (Proverbs 17:22…) Was it, or is it now your intent to heal the soul with humor?

I can’t heal your soul that’s God’s job. My job is to usher you into a place that will allow God to work within you. If our ministry does what it is supposed to do then after your heart becomes merry then God uses his special medicine to do the healing. And that’s something that Vicodin and Prozac can’t even touch!

You’ve been compared to the likes of Bill Cosby. Would you say that is an accurate estimation of your style?

Mr. Cosby? Wow, that’s an honor. There will only be one Bill Cosby. I think Mr. Cosby was a pioneer before his time. He was doing something that wasn’t the norm or even that popular at the time and that’s being clean. He established himself with his own identity and didn’t allow outside influences to change is destiny. Many times we allow “people” to influence us to where we end up making matters worse. Mr. Cosby knew what he was and that was a clean comedian. For that there are some similarities, but I will continue to be what God has called me to be.

Who first recognized that you were funny and when did you come to know they were right?

AAHH Man! Someone in middle school knew, they actually wrote in my year book that I would be the next Bill Cosby and I still have it today in my memorabilia! I didn't have any thoughts of being a comedian back then, but based on the prophecy of a little 13 year old girl, I must have been destined for it!

Are you the guy who would have been voted “Class Clown” or is there a difference between clowning and comedy?

I was a class clown, but I was a cool class clown. It’s funny to see churches not know the difference between a clown and a comedian. Do you know how many churches have contacted us and said we want someone to perform for our youth conference or our youth retreat for kids between 9 – 17 years old. And then we ask them ok, will there be any adults in the audience? And they say a few, but mostly kids! What am I suppose to do with a crowd full of kids when I'm up there talking about sending up a prayer when I'm swiping my credit card in the grocery line or how its gonna be a celebration at my funeral cause I don't have to pay no more bills? Let me get something straight, what them kids need is a clown. I am a comedian, there is a difference! Kids don’t laugh at stand up comedy they laugh at physical humor and don’t get me wrong I do have jokes that include dancing or joking about bad breath that the entire family can enjoy, but I can guarantee you it has nothing to do with putting on a red nose and shoes. Hmmm, unless the price is right… AMEN?

You have stood alongside some of the entertainment industries greatest. Is there anyone that you desire to share the stage with and why?

Steve Harvey would be one of my favorites; Steve took his comedy and made it a business empire, which is what I aim to do! I was fortunate enough to talk with him back stage at the Essence Music Festival, and what I took away from that conversation was priceless.

What message are you conveying to the masses with your signature, “Love Life and Laugh?”

The meaning behind “Love Life and Laugh” is simple; don’t allow the enemy to steal your joy! No matter what we're going through in our lives we should strive to get through it and even in the midst of it to love the life that God has blessed us with and to laugh at the enemy's tricks and efforts to bring us down. That's what God commands us to do and as a matter of fact he says that when we go through adversity to count it all joy! That's truly one of the keys to having a long and fulfilling life! We should all keep in mind that everybody didn't get to wake up that day, so in honor of those that didn't we should make the most out of each and every day that we've been blessed with.

The star-studded, blue-carpeted “Oscars of the Hood” packs in a larger physical audience than the Oscar Awards itself. Nu-Opp Inc.,

created by Steve Harvey and longtime friend, Rushion McDonald has presented the premier platform for celebrating what they call regular people or unsung heroes, and their contributions to their community. Ford® automobiles flanked the stage, and the 8th Annual Hoodie Awards weekend participants packed the Las Vegas Mandalay Bay Convention Center’s “mega-ballroom” as stand-up comedian Lavell Crawford and Carla Farrell of the Steve Harvey Morning Show® hilariously introduced the 2010 winner of the annual Hoodie Awards competition for the “Best Soul Food Restaurant” in America, sponsored by Hillshire Farm®. Two years in the running, and three is definitely a charm. Mama Nems’® Upscale Soulfood Restaurant, owned and operated by local entrepreneur and pastor, Dr. Jonathan L. McKnight not only brings home the bacon, but also the prize. Votes poured in from around the country from June until the end of July, nominating and eventually naming one of Orlando’s newest, internationally acclaimed and celebrated restaurants as the all-time favorite for great southern cooking; with patrons enjoying everything from fried chicken, oxtails, and macaroni and cheese, to red velvet cake. “If your mama can’t cook it, Mama Nems’ can!”

Dwight howarD continued his mission to help others by visiting with children

and local organizations in Haiti September 17-19 in an effort to provide ongoing support to the youngest survivors of the devastating January earthquake

Orlando, FL – NBA All-Star Dwight Howard has

returned to the United States after a life-changing trip to Haiti from September 17-19. Moved by reports coming out of Haiti

since the earthquake and wanting to assess the situation for himself, Dwight ventured to Haiti to

support educational and recreational programs that aid the youngest survivors of the massive January

earthquake that left 250,000 dead.

In April 2010, Dwight developed the Dwight Howard Fund (DHF) that specifically supports programs that address educational and recreational needs of youth in Haiti. “My main goal was to go to Haiti and put a smile on the kids’ faces. “Visiting Haiti has definitely changed my life. The people there still very much need our help; today, tomorrow and for many years to come,” states Dwight.

Upon arriving in Haiti, Dwight visited several organizations, including the Haitian Olympic Committee (COH), where he visited COH’s youth recreation program within Parc Acra Camp, a tent settlement camp of over 4000 residents in Port-au-Prince. The program provides kids living in the tent camp an opportunity for organized playtime to give them the chance to be kids

despite t h e i r h a r s h l i v i n g conditions. There Dwight

announced that the DHF is donating funds to ensure the program’s continuation. He also ran basketball drills with attending kids (approximately 300 children) and distributed black & blue DHF wristbands.

Dwight also visited the Association of Volunteers in International Service (AVSI) where he was a special guest at Maranatha School in Cité Soleil which has 129 enrolled students between the ages of 6 to 13 years. The school organized a special morning of play for the kids in honor of Dwight’s visit and their basketball court in which their basketball court was flooded with over 200 children. The kids sang songs to welcome Dwight and put on a karate demonstration for him. There Dwight announced that the Dwight Howard Fund will support the school for the 2010-2011 school year by covering the cost of teacher salaries, uniforms and school kits.

The final organization visited during his trip was the Global Outreach Haiti Mission, TiTanyen, Haiti, just 15 miles north of Port-au-Prince. There, in partnership with Blessing in a Backpack, Dwight will provide daily nutritious meals for roughly 250 school children throughout the school year.
