invite a woman who would like topreach but has never had theopportunity.

“Of all the stories I have heardfrom churches and women aboutMartha Stearns Marshall Sundays, the most meaningful are those ofchurches that for the first time inviteda woman to preach—or those ofwomen who for the first time wereinvited to preach,” said Pam Durso, executive director of the Atlanta-based Baptist Women in Ministry. “Ihave heard life-changing stories,”she said, “church-changing stories.”

According to a study in 2006, 40%of students attending 14 theologyschools affiliated with theCooperative Baptist Fellowship arewomen, but just 6% of CBF churches

are led by a woman pastor, co-pastoror church planter. ClarissaStrickland, networking specialist forthe Atlanta-based CBF, wrote in arecent blog, “I think that often thereluctance comes not from any greattheological struggle with the idea thatGod can call a woman to preach andto pastor, but rather because thewhole idea is so foreign to somecongregations,” Strickland wrote in arecent blog.

“I suspect there are folks sitting intheir pews who may never havebeen exposed to a female proclaimerin the pulpit of their own church.”

Participating churches may sendtheir church name, city, state, pastor, the name of your guest preacher, and contact information to bwim.info.
