GOSPEL SOCIALITE MARCH - 2012

From the desk of the Editor & Chief

From the desk of the PublisherAccess DeniedWrite the vision. Make it plain. We have heard the song and recited the scripture again and again, but if you are anything like me this is a hard task. While chatting with my sisters, we often share ideas back and forth about various visions that have been given to us to pursue. One of the main lines that we ask each other is “What do you think people will say if….” It has become such a common question that we sometimes have a ten minute conversation about what “so and so” may say, or how “so and so” may react to our proposed vision or idea.

All the while God tells us to simply write the vision-not Facebook the vision or Tweet the vision, but simply write the vision and make it plain.

I believe that God has given us all visions that we are to pursue, but sometimes we allow outsiders to have access to the vision prematurely. Like a premature baby, our vision should be handled with the utmost care. There are certain precautions that we should take when determining who can have access to our vision from the Most High God. You see, not everyone should have an ALL- ACCESS PASS to what God has promised us. For if we truly believe that God is who He is, then we should be confident in the mere thought that writing the vision is just enough. Be encouraged in knowing that I have found God to be true to his word every time. Now it is time for us to stand true on His.

Blessings,

Lady Dre’

“I’m not in Right now…”When your phone rings the first thing you do is check the caller ID to see who’s calling. Once you see who is on the other line you then make a choice to answer or ignore the call. I can attest that there are some numbers that may show up on my phone and I will answer before the second ring, without hesitation. Or, maybe a number will show up that I know if answered it may change my whole mood but I answer anyway. I have learned that we will answer most calls without thinking twice, but when it comes to God’s call we hesitate.

My question is, when God calls do you answer? Jeremiah 1:5 says "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." God has placed a call on all of our lives. Whether it is in the pulpit or in your home, we all have a calling. Maybe you are like Moses who objected many times to God’s call. God said to Moses, “I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt” (Ex 3:11) and Moses replied, “Who am I to go to Pharaoh…?” Or maybe you have Gideon “Syndrome” where you look for several signs before you answer God’s call.

As for me, I was Moses & Gideon wrapped in one. In my immature thinking I was so concerned about what my family and friends would say or think about me if I fully answered God’s call.

We have all answered calls that have upset us, broken our hearts, wasted our time, and left us feeling empty, but I promise if you take the time to answer God’s call you WILL NOT be the same! God is on the other line waiting for you to answer--what are you going to do?

Be Encouraged,

Calvin Williams, III

Have No Fear…Faith Based and Fabulous Books are Here!I wrote my first novel Sunday Brunch in 1999.  I was on my way to becoming a lawyer but in that last year of law school God birthed a story that launched my book career. Had no idea what I was doing, why I was writing or what God was going to do with it.  I took one

leap of faith and over a decade later my work has gained attention in Gospel Truth, Gospel Today, Essence, Ebony, USA Today, Southern Living, Upscale and other major media.  Eventual my novel Sunday Brunch became a faith and fiction favorite (as well as the Sequel Sunday Brunch Diaries and Sweet Magnolia).

Recently, I began to meditate on what it was that made Sunday Brunch such an engaging and popular novel with national and international readers: authentic, positive, relatable characters with all the themes we girlfriends love.  Sunday Brunch was not just a book…it was (and still is) a movement.  It resonated with Christian and secular audiences without compromising God’s word.   This is the next season of The Brunch Movement.  After a little prayer I realized there is a thirst out in the literary and entertainment world for positive, but substantive characters.  Cable TV is a blessing and a curse.  I’ve taken in and assessed my share of reality shows. I try to watch something and form an opinion for myself.  However, I’ve formed my opinion and realize, we need alternatives and we need them now.  However, I believe we are turning the corner yet again and rediscovering the purposeful or even positive entertainment audience.

Thus The Brunch Movement is born…books, media and if God says the same, eventually film (even if I have to do it myself).  The next theme: Act and think like a lady.  My work promotes real life women with real life issues, who don’t believe a fist fight is a way to resolve them.   I am not trying to stop the reality show movement (I’m all for 1st Amendment and freedom of expression).  I just want to provide alternatives and celebrate everyday woman in the process because we are doing fabulous things!  I call it entertainment with a purpose; a divinely inspired, God approved brand. I believe I’m called to celebrate women with morals, integrity, intellect and faith.  Our mothers, aunts, daughters, sisters and wives; everyday women walking on purpose and I love them for it. Stay tuned for additional articles related to Norma’s books.

Church Plates- The Knowles’ are bringing cooking back!

You may remember back in the day when churches used to sell dinner plates or “church plates” as they are often called, after Sunday service. These plates consisted of a spread of foods such as fried chicken, baked mac & cheese, collard greens or potato salad and more often than not topped off with a moist, melt in your mouth slice of cake. Fast-forward to the present, The Knowles have launched a Gospel Owned Business that captures the true Southern tradition of home cooked Sunday meals. Church Plates is a catering business established by husband and wife team Karlton & Catherine Knowles. Together the Knowles have collected recipes from the elders of the church to recreate that old time feel of authentic home cooked meals—something that most families rarely experience these days.Their goal is to bring back good, home style food at a great price. Even if you aren’t familiar with the southern traditions of Church Plates, they are more than willing to help you “Experience the Taste of Sunday Dinner Everyday”.

Church Plates offers affordable catering prices and and can work with any budget. They specialize in weddings, celebrations, private parties, graduations, company functions—you name it, they are the company to call.

SGOSPEL SOCIALITE MARCH - 2012

By: Pastor Charles L. Allen Jr. of Greater Mt. Nebo Baptist Church

Brothers, we live in a society where men have been under scrutiny and rightfully so. You hear words like “lack of integrity”, “lack of honesty”, “lack of compassion”, “lack of family values”, selfish and not trustworthy. Our role in the home has diminished due to outside interest and career opportunities. When our children go astray and our marriages have failed, we sometimes wonder within ourselves where we have gone wrong. Dr. James Dobson in his book “Straight talk to Men and their Wives said and I quote “The western world stands at a great crossroads in its history and it is in my opinion, based on the experience I shared, that our very survival as a people will depend on the presence or absence of masculine leadership in the homes”.

The absence of male leadership whether in our homes or the church, permeates through our society. Echoing from our communities we hear the desperate cry for spiritual male leadership. Jesus defined leadership as service, and His definition applies whether a leader works in secular or church organizations. The Bible teaches us that our service to our wives is to love her as Christ loved the church. Love has the power to transform when it is given unconditionally. Our service to our children is to not provoke them to wrath, but to bring them up in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Finally, we have a service towards Jesus. We must pick up our cross and follow him daily.

Hers. I Do. The Best Man

By Natalie Alexander

Most women dream of the moment when their future husband will propose the long awaited question, "Will you marry me?" While we wonder about all the little details of how we will know when he's going to, or even if it will ever happen, we have already rehearsed in our minds our response without hesitation. Yet often we do not readily give the same commitment of willingness to the best relationship we’ll ever experience.

Singleness can test our faith in God. Of course we believe in His existence, but we often doubt how realistic the chances are that even after waiting, we’ll receive what we may have always wanted, the opportunity to be in a beautiful relationship. We may find it easy to believe His promises for anyone going through the hardest of life's hardships, unwavering that God is able. Yet, when it comes to our own future, our abundant faith seems to shrivel up in doubt. Has His promises changed? Has His ability to make good on His promises changed? Not at all. I have realized that we don’t really believe Him. To believe goes beyond acknowledging the possibility or probability of something. Rather, it trusts in and relies on the strength of the credibility of the person saying it.

We have already been given the best proposal we’ll ever receive. He asked, “Will you believe Me? Will you trust Me? Will you let Me prove myself to you? He’s waiting, how will you respond? I pray your answer is, “Yes!”

Houston’s Best Kept GOSPEL SecretBy GSM Staff WriterYou asked for it Houston and now it is finally here, an entertainment spot for the Christian lady and gentleman that exudes in tranquility and sophistication without the alcohol, obscene music or profanity. Yes, The Z Lounge located off of Hwy. 6 and 290 is Houston’s newest Christian Venue that hosts a variety of events-from Live Music to social gatherings and even spoken word.

Z Lounge, founded by husband and wife team (pictured on front cover) Trianne and CJ Mosley is a thriving venue space that doubles as a state of the art design studio. Trianne, a licensed contractor of Texas, one of the only seven women contractors in the entire state, along with her professional military husband built and designed the studio from the ground up. Zartel Home & Lifestyle is Houston’s most successful and full service-design firms. This unique organization offers its services to clients who seek the finer qualities of life. Their imaging services include design and construction, event planning and

coordination, and social mixers. From the construction phase to fruition, Zartel walks you through the art of exquisite design.

As for Mrs. Trianne Mosley, an anointed and God-fearing successful entrepreneur believes to have a successful business one must always put God first and constantly have a plan. When it comes to running a husband and wife business venture she promotes the idea by saying that God intended for the man to be the head and as a woman she finds great joy in being Mr. Mosley’s co-pilot. Mrs. Mosley’s humble spirit is something that she values and transcends into her home while rearing her 6 six children 3 biological and 3 by marriage. She finds great joy in multi-tasking between her business ventures and her home life—this is truly admirable considering Mr. Mosley’s demanding career as an Engineer Captain in the United States Army.

Z Lounge is also co-operated by Houston’s own Jerri P. Beasley, a renowned

Roasted Cabbage with Lemon Makes 3-4 servings as a side dish, recipe adapted slightly from Roasted Cabbage with Lemon at Eat Repeat.

Ingredients:1 medium-sized head of green cabbage2 T olive oil2-3 T fresh squeezed lemon juice (I used 2 T for the cabbage in these photos, but next time I'd use even more lemon)generous amount of sea salt and fresh ground black pepperlemon slices, for serving cabbage (optional)

Instructions:Preheat oven to 450F/232C. Spray a roasting pan with non-stick spray or olive oil.

Cut the head of cabbage into 8 same-size wedges, cutting through the core and stem end. Then carefully trim the core strip and stem from each wedge and arrange wedges in a single layer on the roasting pan (leave some space around them as much as you can.)

Whisk together the olive oil and lemon juice (use the larger amount of lemon juice if you like a lot of lemon like I do.) Then use a pastry brush to brush the top sides of each cabbage wedge with the mixture and season generously with salt and fresh ground black pepper. Turn cabbage wedges carefully, then brush the second side with the olive oil/lemon juice mixture and season with salt and pepper.

Roast cabbage for about 15 minutes, or until the side touching the pan is nicely browned. Then turn each wedge carefully and roast 10-15 minutes more, until the cabbage is nicely browned and cooked through with a bit of chewiness remaining. Serve hot, with additional lemon slices to squeeze lemon juice on at the table if desired.

This printable recipe from KalynsKitchen.com.

Spinach and Mozzarella Egg Bake (Makes 6 servings; recipe created by Kalyn.)

Ingredients:5 oz. organic fresh spinach (4 cups packed)1-2 tsp. olive oil (depending on your pan)1 1/2 cups low-fat mozzarella (I used a low-fat mozzarella blend from Costco with 6 grams of fat in 1/4 cup.)1/3 cup thinly sliced green onions8 eggs, beaten1 tsp. Spike seasoning (or use any all purpose seasoning mix that's good with eggs)salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste

Instructions:Preheat oven to 375F/190C. Spray an 8 1/2 inch by 12 inch glass or crockery casserole dish with olive oil or nonstick spray.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan, add spinach all at once, and stir just until the spinach is wilted, about 2 minutes. Transfer spinach to the casserole dish, spreading it around so all the bottom of the dish is covered. Layer the grated cheese and sliced onions on top of the spinach.

Beat the eggs with Spike Seasoning (or other seasoning mix) and salt and fresh ground pepper to taste. (I use only a tiny pinch of salt and a few grinds of pepper.) Pour the egg mixture over the spinach/cheese combination, and then use a fork to gently "stir" so the eggs, spinach, and cheese are evenly combined.

Bake about 35 minutes or until the mixture is completely set and starting to lightly brown. Let cool about 5 minutes before cutting. (The egg bake will settle down some as it cools.) Serve hot. This is good with light sour cream. I also like a little Green Tabasco Sauce sprinkled on the top.

This can be cut into individual servings to keep in the fridge and microwaved for a quick breakfast during the week. Don't microwave

longer than 1-2 minutes or the eggs can get slightly rubbery.

MARCH - 2012

Source: NAACPCharlotte, NC – On March 20, 2012 members of the NAACP Religious Leaders Roundtable, the Religious Affairs Committee of the NAACP Board of Directors and other evangelicals met with Rev. Franklin Graham, President and CEO of Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and President/CEO of Samaritan’s Purse.  The group held the first

meeting of its kind to discuss the use of faith as a political weapon and how to advance a new narrative about the meaning evangelicalism.

“This was a meaningful and productive meeting,” stated Rev. Nelson B. Rivers III, Vice President for Stakeholders relations with the NAACP.  “All parties were in agreement that it is essential to our society and our faith that we refrain from demonizing Christians and people of other faiths when they do not agree with us.  We look forward to continued discussions with Rev. Graham”

The group also agreed to work together to have a national conversation about the core principles of justice and fairness and to help create a new narrative about evangelicalism and the message of Christ.

“I was honored that these guests traveled to North Carolina today from around the country to meet with me. I reiterated that my primary calling is the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ, but that while we may agree to disagree on certain political issues we agreed to work together against injustice both in and outside the United States. I look forward to continuing the dialogue we began today.”

The group convened the meeting after the NAACP released an open letter to Rev. Graham questioning his inflammatory remarks about President Obama’s faith and Rev. Graham subsequently issued an apology with regards to those comments.

In addition to Rev. Rivers and Rev. Graham, participants in the meeting included: Rev. Julius C. Hope, Dr.  Amos C. Brown,  Rev. Theresa Dear,  Rev. Nelson Johnson, Bishop George Walker, Dr. Jamal Bryant, Dr. Madeline Sadler, Dr. William Barber II, Dr. Stephen Thurston, Rev. Telley Gadson, Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III, Rev. Lee Franklin, Rev. Kojo Nantambu, Rev. T. Anthony Spearman and Rev. Dwayne A. Walker.

The parties intend to reconvene to continue the dialogue in the near future.
