“Hmmm…I knew I shoulda taken that left turn in Albuquerque.” - Bugs Bunny

Have I made the wrong choice?

We all know what it feels like to ask yourself this question. Whether you’re second-guessing a job you took, a relationship you find yourself in the middle of, or what you ordered for lunch, you know the sensation of having the sinking feeling that you might have made a mistake.

Being a disciple of Jesus is no different.

The Gospel of Luke was written to a man named Theophilus. We don't know a lot of details about Theophilus, but he appears to be a Christian who is having second thoughts about the life of discipleship he has embarked upon. This is how Luke addresses him in the book’s beginning: …[I’ve written this for you], Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.

Apparently, Theophilus is questioning his decision to become a Christian. Living in a culture that is marked by ruthless power politics, a relatively weak and often hidden church, and an almost incessant questioning and dismissal of the Christian faith, it is easy to envision Theophilus asking questions like: Is this Jesus story really true? Is God really faithful to his promises? What does true discipleship look like?

Luke went to great lengths researching and crafting his gospel to answer questions like these. He wrote it so that people like Theophilus, and us, might have confidence that God is at work in the world and in our lives through Jesus Christ. To be a disciple of Jesus is to be on the right path―the path of salvation, which to Luke and his original audience meant healing or wholeness.

So, whether you’re a new Christian, a seasoned saint, or someone investigating Jesus for the first time, Luke is a great book for you to dive into.

Let us worship.

Lisa, if the Bible has taught us nothing else, and it hasn't, it's that girls should stick to girls' sports. Homer Simpson

God’s original vision—a vision He has never abandoned but revives in the work of His Son—was for relationships between men and women to be dazzling points of light on this spinning globe. Dynamics between men and women were never intended to be a battle of the sexes or a heated debate within Christian circles. Male/female relationships in Christ are to be a glowing testament to the fact that we are followers of Jesus. This is where God means to put on display a gospel-powered love. This is where the world is supposed to see men and women laying down their lives for others, offering strength and wisdom to each other, and investing ourselves fully for God’s kingdom. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself―today and every day.

Seated L E C T I O S A C R A Genesis 1:26-31 (NIV)

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

“Lectio Sacra” means “sacred reading.” It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God’s word.

2

Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship.

Holy Father, we come before you to confess our sins. Though you should guide us, we inform ourselves. Though you should rule us, we control ourselves. Though you should fulfill us, we console ourselves. For we think your ways too high, your will too hard,      your power too remote, and your love too free. But they are not! And without them,      we are of all people most miserable.

Almighty and most merciful Father,      heal our confused minds with your word;      heal our divided wills with your Spirit;      heal our troubled souls with your love;      heal our anxious hearts with your presence; all for the sake of your Son, who loved us and gave himself up for us.

(You are invited to confess your sins silently)

3

Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ.

R E C E I V I N G O F G R A C E Adapted from Romans 8

God did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all,  how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?  In Christ, God has forgiven our sins. God has paid our debt. Nothing can separate us from the Love of God, Which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you!

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we’d first begun.

Questions from The Book of Church Order, 56-5

1. Do you acknowledge that your child is created in God's image and a gift from him to both you and the world?

2. Do you acknowledge your child’s need of the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ, and the renewing grace of the Holy Spirit?

3. Do you claim God’s covenant promises on your child’s behalf, and do you look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ for his salvation, as you do for your own?

4. Do you now unreservedly dedicate your child to God, and promise, in humble reliance upon divine grace, that you will endeavor to set before him a godly example, that you will pray with and for him, that you will teach him the doctrines of our holy religion, and that you will strive, by all the means of God’s appointment, to bring him up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord?

To the congregation: Do you as a congregation undertake the responsibility of assisting in the Christian nurture of this child?

P R O M I S E T O T H E C H I L D Adapted from the Church of Scotland Baptismal Liturgy

For you Jesus Christ came into the world. For you he lived and showed God’s love. For you he suffered the darkness of Calvary and cried at the last, ‘It is finished.’ For you he triumphed over death and rose to new life. For you he reigns at God’s right hand. All this he did for you, though you do not know it yet.

Standing C O N G R E G A T I O N A L P R A Y E R Adapted from The Book of Common Prayer, 1928

Lord Jesus Christ, who embraces children with the arms of mercy and makes them living members of your Church, give Veyli grace to stand fast in your faith, to obey your word, and to abide in your love. Being made strong by your Holy Spirit, may he resist temptation and overcome evil, and rejoice in the life that now is, and dwell with you in the life that is to come; through your merits, O merciful Savior, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, world without end. Amen.

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.

Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

11:30 AM P R A Y I N G T H E P S A L M S 139:1-6, 13-18 O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you.

Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection.

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

P A S S I N G T H E P E A C E As recipients of God's grace, we gladly receive peace from him. In response to his grace, we also extend that grace to one another with a handshake or a hug. Traditionally, Christians have greeted one another during this time in the service with the phrase, "May the peace of Christ be with you" and receive back the greeting "And also with you."

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

For the church and its ministry to the world, and for all those who bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the nations, let us pray to the Lord. [Silence] Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

For the nations of the world and their leaders, for all those in authority, and for an end to war and oppression, let us pray to the Lord. [Silence] Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven’t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church.

If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you.

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heaven reflect thy rays,Stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, Singing bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in thee.

Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began; Father love is reigning o’er us, brother love binds man to man. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife, Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life.

Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line.

Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen.

WAYS TO GET CONNECTED

Parish fellowships What is a parish? A parish is a neighborhood or collection of neighborhoods that are proximate to each other. Each parish has a parish captain who is responsible for coordinating quarterly parish fellowships for the people who live within the parish. These fellowships are a great opportunity for new people to connect with others from Grace and for regular attendees and members to get together for an informal time of fun and fellowship together. To be added to your parish e-mail list, contact your parish captain (see page 12) or e-mail our Ministry Administrator, Catie Stroethoff at [email protected].

Community groups What is a community group? A community group (CG) is a small group of up to 12 adults plus children that commit to journey together for the year (September-May) for the purpose of growing in relationship with God and each other. Community groups are located throughout the city, and are hosted and led by various members of the Grace community. CGs spend time in some form of study/discussion and prayer as well as fellowship. To see the list of available groups, please see page 13. If you have questions about community groups, contact Debbie (Smith) Tacke at [email protected].

Serving the City Today @ 10:30 AM - 11:15 AM Sanctuary Making Disciples - Serving the City. This is our mission at Grace Church Seattle, and everything we do is oriented toward accomplishing this mission. We want to nurture and cultivate deep, intimate relationship with God and out of that relationship we want service to others to flow freely and generously. Historically, most of the ways we have served together as a congregation have been centralized here in Capitol Hill, but we are moving toward serving together within our parishes. During Christian Formation hour, some of the parish captains will be sharing about the ways we have been able to serve together this fall, and there will be time for parishes to connect to talk about ways to serve together this winter/spring. Please plan to join us for this important time together!

Parish 7 Service Opportunity - Garfield High School Invitation extended to the congregation Garfield High School, located in the Central District, is launching a tutoring program to help students who are struggling. Garfield staff will be supervising and leading the time in the library, and they are looking for volunteers who can regularly show up and tutor students (subjects - english, history, math, and science). Faculty will also be available to help the tutors get oriented to the material. They need people who are able to commit one day a week (on a Tuesday or a Thursday afternoon, any one-hour block between 3:45-6:00pm) until mid-June. It is important that tutors are available to commit to being there each week, with the anticipated periodic absence for sickness, vacation, etc. This is a great way to serve our neighbors, and we would love to see a core group from our congregation get involved with this service opportunity. For more questions or to get involved, contact Andrea Kaufmann (Parish Captain for Parish 7) at [email protected].

Since our congregation draws from a wide geographic area, the parish model provides a way for people to connect with people who live near them. There is the greatest opportunity for organic connection and time together when people are proximate to one another. We want to establish and grow community groups within each parish, and we also hope that quarterly parish fellowships provide a natural way to reach out to neighbors who aren’t part of the Grace community. If you are uncertain which parish your neighborhood is in, contact Debbie (Smith) Tacke at [email protected].

Community groups are places of care and community where we learn more about living the Christian life together. Each group is unique and has its own "personality," and yet all groups are focused on growing in relationship with God and with each other. Groups meet on different nights in various neighborhoods around the city, and include time for fellowship, study and reflection, and prayer together. If you have any questions about community groups, contact Debbie (Smith) Tacke at [email protected].

Luke 8:1-3

[1] Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, [2] and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, [3] and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.
