The six points1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics.

(e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in Hip Hop).

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images.(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music.(either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

6. There are often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).

Jason Derulo- the other side

Genre- DanceCharacteristics:• Has a dance routine

within the video.• Uses bright colours in

the lighting and looks like its set in a party atmosphere.

• The video and song is very up beat.

• All the dancers including Jason are wearing the same.

• Video tells a type of story.

Lyrics and Visuals• “kiss me like it’s do or

die, or take me to the other side” just Jason Derulo and female kissing in the rain.

• This song is based on Jason Derulo and a friend going from just friends through to a relationship. Most visuals in the video show his and hers relations hip through good and bad.

Music and Visuals• The music is very up

beat and in the duration of the song Jason Derulo had a very up beat dance routine that fits within the beat of the music.

Record Company• Jason Derulo is mainly aimed at females as he is a

muscly man. As of this his music videos contain quite a few close up shots of him and quite a few shots of him topless.

• The music is mainly a dance performance but the video does tell a story.

Frequent reference to notion of looking • In this video all the dancers don’t look at Jason

however the only person that does is the female he wants to be in a relationship with. All the dancers Are male so it suggests that only females are attracted to him.

Intertextuality• In the beginning of this

video it starts of like Jason telling a story so it has a film like opening. This also contains the name of the song, the artist and who produced the film.
