CAUSE AND EFFECTThank the Volunteers in Your Life During National Volunteer Week

The TWIN RIVERS YMCA is encouraging community members to use National Volunteer Week (April 23-29, 2017) as a way to take a moment and thank the volunteers in their lives.

“Without volunteers, the Y wouldn’t be the same; they’re the heart and soul of our organization and without their hard work, dedication and selflessness we couldn’t do the work we do every day to help kids, families and communities thrive,” said Adrienne Payton, Events and Volunteer Director, TWIN RIVERS YMCA. “By bringing people together from all walks of life around a shared purpose to do good, the Y is creating a stronger, more cohesive community.”

As one of the leading nonprofits and volunteer organizations in the country, nearly 600,000 people volunteer at the Y each year and here in Craven County more than 400 individuals

give back through activities such as mentoring youth, coaching youth sports, serving on our boards and spearheading fundraising drives. These opportunities also help volunteers enhance their personal well-being and develop meaningful relationships – all while making an impact in communities they care about.

Here at our Y in 2016, volunteers helped teach lifesaving skills to over 2,000 children during the Water Safety program, instilled confidence in over 830 Youth & Teen Sports participants, and encouraged and motivated over 900 community members during our race events. Many more opportunities exist for others to help make a difference.

National Volunteer Week is a great time to get involved and give back. Here are some ways individuals can take an active role at the Y and in their community:

1. Help with Y fundraising efforts to ensure those in need can access essential programs and services to reach their full potential. 2. Get involved with a Y mentoring or tutoring program to help youth learn new skills, build confidence and achieve their goals. 3. Coach a sports team, teach a class or ask Y staff about other ways to get involved with a program of interest.4. Invite friends and neighbors to join you in contributing to a stronger community. 5. Encourage members to get involved with Togetherhood, a program that gives Y members the opportunity to select, plan and lead meaningful community service projects that benefit people and organizations right here in our neighborhood!

At the Y, we’re dedicated to strengthening community by giving back and supporting our neighbors. And we know that members like you have lots of ideas and the desire to reach out to make positive changes in our community. To learn more about volunteer opportunities at the TWIN RIVERS YMCA, contact Adrienne Payton at 252-638-8799 or [email protected].

KIRA’SCORNER

APRIL IS STRESS AWARENESS MONTHMedical experts say that many diseases and disorders we encounter are related to our stress levels. A lot of us live super busy lives these days. We are always on the go and rushing from one activity to the next. Maybe you have felt like your plate is too full at times or that there aren’t enough hours in the day. Maybe you have a hard time saying no and constantly find that you are overcommitting yourself. If this is you, stop and listen up!

If you can learn to quiet your mind, it helps recharge your emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Otherwise, we are constantly reacting instead of reflecting. Below are some ways that you can work towards a life with less stress.

• Meditation: If stress has you anxious, tense, and worried, consider trying meditation. Meditation is a state of increased awareness of the present moment. It can create a sense of calm, peace, and balance that benefits both your emotional well-being and your overall health. If you carry yourself more calmly through your day, meditation can even improve certain medical conditions.

• Live in the Present: It’s good to learn from the past and plan for the future. But often we use this to avoid dealing with our present situation in life, which might be overwhelming us. If we never learn to find space in the present we can feel constantly overwhelmed, anxious, and feel a sense of being out of control. This can lead to depression, fatigue, and physical symptoms like headaches, backache, insomnia and an inability to enjoy life.

• Practice Belly Breathing: Learn how to breathe properly and you can reduce mental tension, help to focus your mind, and increase your body’s energy levels by properly oxygenating the blood. Proper breathing calms and strengthens the mind, and creates a feeling of inner peace and self-control. Belly breathing is like imagining your belly like a balloon, and as you inhale, you are filling up that balloon. As you exhale, that balloon is deflating. This allows the lungs to expand to full capacity and bring more oxygen in.

Some other great activities to incorporate into and practice during your quiet time can be:

• Focus on your breath or a candle flame for five minutes• Take a walk in nature and be aware of the beauty around you• Take a leisure bike ride or paddle• Pray at bedtime• Listen to music that evokes a particular emotion for you• Take a yoga class• Enjoy a silent meal with pure gratitude for its nourishment and flavor• Take a bubble bath• Read a book for enjoyment• Enjoy driving in your car with no music or talking• Try painting or coloring
