CRISIS SUPPORT FOR EMPLOYEES AND VOLUNTEERSWe have a Critical Incident Stress Response Team for employees and
volunteers, also called CISR, available 24/7.
A certified multi-disciplinary team will assist in offering individual or
group defusings or debriefings after the death or serious injury of a co-
worker or family member, an event injuring a patient, or disaster.
Sometimes we need to call “time out” emotionally and physically
in order to be able to focus again on a safe work environment and
excellent patient care experience.
The purpose of the Critical Incident Stress Response Team is to establish
a confidential and caring procedure for response to staff, employees
or volunteers who have encountered a distressing event with sufficient
impact to influence their effective coping skills.
Call the hospital operator for the CISR member on-call.
(System policy S06 00 134)
Purpose of the Critical Incident Stress Response Team:To establish a confidential and caring procedure for response to staff, employees or volunteers who have encountered a distressing event with sufficient impact to influence coping skills.

BLOOD CENTERGIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE
At Lee Health, donated blood goes to help save the lives of patients at your
community-owned hospitals: Lee Memorial Hospital, HealthPark Medical Center, Gulf
Coast Medical Center and Cape Coral Hospital. In addition to the three hospitals, our
blood center also services the Trauma Center, Regional Cancer Center, and Golisano
Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.
Just one single pint of blood has the potential to help save the lives of three people
in need. Your donation may be separated into its different components: the platelets
may go to a child with leukemia, the plasma to a patient with a clotting problem and
the red blood cells to an accident victim.

BABY-FRIENDLY HOSPITALSBENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDINGBenefits for babies:• It is easy to digest and the composition meets the baby’s needs in the first
months.
• Breast milk provides protection from many illnesses such as ear infections,
diarrhea, pneumonia and meningitis.
• Breastfed babies are less likely to develop allergies, asthma or eczema.
• Studies have shown that exclusive breastfeeding for at least 2 months can
protect children from developing Type I insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.
• Breastfed babies have less risk of inflammatory bowel disease, multiple
sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and childhood cancers.
• Breastfed infants have less risk of becoming overweight as children and
adults.
• Studies have shown that children have a higher IQ if they have been
breastfed.
• There is a higher risk of sudden infant death (SIDS) in infants who have not
been breastfed.
• Breast milk protects the gut of preterm babies from gastrointestinal disease.
Benefits for mothers:• Breastfeeding reduces blood loss after delivery and helps the uterus return
to its pre-pregnancy size.
• Mothers who breastfeed usually resume their menstrual cycle 20-30 weeks
later than mothers who do not and usually lose more weight.
• Breastfeeding lowers the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
• Breastfeeding may also reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
Benefits to the community:• Breastfeeding can reduce healthcare costs due to the benefits listed for
moms and babies.
• Infant formula continues to rise in cost. (150% increase since the 1980s)
• Breastfeeding reduces pollution- no fossil fuel required for preparation, no
plastics for bottles and no formula cans to throw away.
Adapted from California Department of Public Health Women, Infants, and
Children Supplemental Nutrition Program
This facility upholds the World Health
Organization/UNICEF “Ten Steps to
Successful Breastfeeding” published in
a joint statement entitled: “Protecting,
Promoting and Supporting
Breastfeeding: The Special Role of
Maternity Services”
Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding
Every facility providing maternity services and care
for newborn infants should:
1. Have a written breastfeeding policy that is
routinely communicated to all health care staff.
2. Train all health care staff in the skills necessary
to implement this policy.
3. Inform all pregnant women about the benefits
and management of breastfeeding.
4. Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within one
hour of birth.
5. Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to
maintain lactation even if they are separated
from their infants.
6. Give infants no food or drink other than breast
milk, unless medically indicated.
7. Practice rooming-in--allow mothers and infants
to remain together 24 hours a day.
8. Encourage breastfeeding on demand.
9. Give no pacifiers or artificial nipples to
breastfeeding infants.
10. Foster the establishment of breastfeeding
support groups and refer mothers to them on
discharge from the hospital or birth center.
The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding form
the basis of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative,
a worldwide breastfeeding quality improvement
project created by the World Health Organization
(WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund
(UNICEF).
Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers also
uphold the International Code of Marketing of
Breast Milk Substitutes by offering parents support,
education, and educational materials that promote
the use of human milk rather than other infant food
or drinks, and by refusing to accept or distribute free
or subsidized supplies of breast milk substitutes,
nipples, and other feeding devices.
