Montour Township
Fall 2019
Good Things Are Happening...
The Montour Township Supervisors will be hosting the 3rd Annual
Community Night on Monday, October 14 from 5:00pm – 7:30 pm. The
event will be held at the empty lot on Perry Avenue next to the
bridge. This is a great opportunity to meet your elected officials,
police officers, and fire firefighters. There will be fun for all
ages – games, face painting, a coloring contest, hot dogs and
refreshments, and door prizes. The event is free and open to all
residents of the township.
Looking for a HOWLING good time? Last year’s Trunk or Treat
event was such a success that we have decided to make it an annual
event. Trunk or Treat will be held on Thursday October 31 from 6pm
– 7:30pm at the empty lot on Perry Avenue next to the bridge. This
is a safe alternative to Trick or Treating. There will be games,
refreshments, and plenty of fun for all ages. We are looking for
residents to participate by setting up a Trunk for the event and
passing out treats. If you are interested in participating, please
contact the township office at 570-784-4222 by Monday, October
21.
ZONING PERMITS… A Zoning Permit is required by many
municipalities to determine if the placement of any proposed
structure is correct with respect to the appropriateness of the
zone and with respect to the setbacks from roads and property
lines. There are many Ordinances in place which influence the
outcome of each situation. By law, this process can take up to 90
days from the date your completed application is received. The
complete document of zoning permit procedures and applications can
be found on our website.

Montour Township Fire Department
October is Fire Prevention Month
Home fire escape planning and drills are an essential part of
fire safety. A home fire escape plan needs to be developed and
practiced before a fire strikes.
Home escape planning should include:
• Drawing a map of each level of the home that shows all doors
and windows;
• Going to each room and pointing to the two ways out;
• Making sure someone will help children, older adults, and
people with disabilities wake up and get out;
• Teaching children how to escape on their own in case you
cannot help them;
• Establishing a meeting place outside and away from the home
where everyone can meet after exiting; and
• Having properly installed and maintained smoke alarms.
Home fire escape practice should include:
• Pushing the smoke alarm button to start the drill;
• Practicing what to do in case there is smoke: Get low and go.
Get out fast.
• Practicing using different ways out and closing doors behind
you as you leave;
• Never going back for people, pets, or things;
• Going to your outdoor meeting place; and
• Calling 9-1-1 or the local emergency number from a cellphone
or a neighbor’s phone.
Don’t forget to change the batteries in your smoke detector and
test it regularly! You should have a working smoke detector on
every level of your home!
