    is restored in His Church.

J ANUARY 22m! W,lS a Sabbath thatwill }l,o down in the eternal historyof God's Church and Hi s Kingdom! On that day, for the first time in 75 0

years, the government of God was fullyres tored in Hi s Church. Duc,.)' administrative office which Christ set in HisChurch is functioning once again.

On that day, at the headquartersChurch ill Pasadena, s ix addit ional Godcalled, consecra ted, Ambassador-Coll ege-trained m in is te rs wer e ordainedwith fast ing and p rayer, by the lay ing onof hands of the m in is te rs previous ly ordained.

    Not Since 1200 A.D.

Historical research reveals that thelast r emains of God's complete government in the true Church of God existedaround 1200 A.D., among th e "Waldenscs" (a s the Church of God was thencalled by the world), while th e apostlePeter Waldo was still alive.

Some of the administrative officeswhich Christ set in Hi s Church havecontinued to the present t ime. But sincethe days of Peter Waldo the ctrtir formof God's government, as HE set it inHi s Church, has nor been pe rpe tu at ed.

Yo u find the seven eras, or stages ofact iv ity, in the t rn c Church of God described by Jesus' prophecy in the second.in.] thi rd chapter s of Revelat ion. Her-

man Hoehs article in the July, 1953,issue of Th e GOOD NEWS t raced thehis tory of these seven churches- t-or seven successive stages of the one true

    Church ofG o d - a

Church that was always small in number, persecuted, despised by the world.

The "Sa rd is " Chu rch

Ye t even thi s true Church has beencomposed of hZ t r l Zdm. And by t he t imeof the latter, dying days of th e "Sardis"church- the 1860s on th rough the 1930s-government had degenerated to aform of worldly politics. Th e churchwas headed by a "Genera l Con fe rence, "and leaders elected by vote of delegates. It was government of MEN-nor of God.

It was during those days, in 1927,that God b rought me to complete surrender and conversion. I was broughtinto contact w it h t he Stanberry church, and into fellowship with the Oregonmembers. In December, 1930 , at theiru rg ing, my first evangel is ti c campaignwas held, under their auspices, in Harr isbu rg, Oregon. I was ordained by theOregon Conference, and brought fulltime into the ministry, in the summerof 1931.

I realized they were God's Church.Ye t I wa s extremely troubled and perp lexed about two things. Their form oforganization, obviously, was no t GOD'S

form. Secondly, it began to be clearthat their leaders refused t o correct doctrinal errors, which they admitted inwriting were false teachings . And they

also refused to publish or teach theirmembers truths which they admitted,in wri ting , were tnabs, and "new light"to them.

In a wor d, they re fus ed to accept correction from the Word of God, and theyrefused to GROW in knowledge or ingrace. As a body they were not overcorners. They preached what they hadof the true Message with a "weak whisper" heard by the few, not with the" loud shou t, " t hunder ed a round thewor ld . As all instrument of God, carrying on GOD'S WORK, the Sardis chu rchwas now OEADl

Those of us in O rego n w ho wereobedient in keeping God's Word (Rev.3: 8-10 ), permitting the Bible to correct us, joyfully accepting new light, were separated from per secu ting "Sardis" jur isdict ion late in 1934. The separation came during the meetings thatresulted in th e ra is ing up of the EugeneChurch, bu t be fo re it was e st ab li sh ed .Yet, while we threw off t he ir h umangovernment over us, and began fromthere to follow the principles of GOD'Sgovernment, we still made every attempt to f el lowship with them for someyears. the BEASTenforced!

Unreported on the front pages of your daily newspapers is a

startling CALENDAR REVISION-a change that wi ll abolishthe week ly cycle and the seventh-day Sabbath!

    by Herman L. Hoeh

T HE"MARK of the BEAST" is here

now! Though it has no t been enforced in our g en er at io n by the

power of the Church or the State, ITSOON MAY BE!

I t may COSt you your job-perhapsyour life!

Almost no one seems to realize whatrapid developments are taking shape inrevising the calendar! Well on the wayto being adopt ed is the cleverest planyet dev ised to dest roy God 's Sabbath. This diabolical plot to CHANGE theweekly cycle, whic h has con ti nued unbroken from creation, is being proposed under the subtle guise of a "scientific, un if orm, stable and perpetual"World Calendar.

Bur there is ano ther, more sinister, reason for c hang ing the calendar!

Destroying God's Oldes t Memor ial

    Go d controls TIME. Man can onlymeasure i t - i t is beyond bis reach tocontrol i t. Ye t in his haugh tiness , manhas presumed t o control i t - t o al ter itas he pleases.

Man has altered the divinely appointed YEAR-he wants to begin it in thedead of winter, in January. Man hasa lt ered the d iv inely appointed MONTHan d also the DAY. Only th e WEEK remains-and now man proposes tochange it, too!

God set th e Sabbath as the oldestmemorial of crea t ion week. To al ter theweek, ma n must destroy the 7th-daySabbath-that is what the world calendar will do!

Let's understand hall' it would be

,(ccomplished. The civil c al endar c ommonl y in use

today is outmoded-in need of revision- s a y th e proponents of th e world calendar. The only reason for revision, ofcourse, is that it was devised by m a nnot God! There is always need for alteri11g what mao does'

True , inst ead of months of i rregularlengths-eompare January with 31 daysand Februa ry with 28- the proposedworld calendar would have a regularp at te rn of mon ths.

True, the year would be divi ded into

four equal quarters of three monthseach. The t hr ee mont hs of each quarterwou ld have a re gu la r pattern of 31, 30,and 30 days each. No l onge r wouldmonths vary from 28 to 31. (See theaccompanying cha rt of the world calendar on the next page.)

True, the proposed world calendarwould always have 26 business days

each mont h, and the dates for the holidays such as Easter and Tha nksgivi ngwould never be altered. Hol idays wouldnot only fall on the same days of theweek, as they presently do, bu t theywould also fall on the same calendardates of th e year-year a ft er year. Another point is that January 1 would always fall on a Sunday.

BUT MORE IMPORTANT THAN ALLtbis calendar would break t he we ek lycycle. The worl d c al endar wou ld contain only 52 complete weeks or 364days!

Each year at the end of Decembert he re would be inse rt ed AN EXTRA DAY,present ly labeled December 31, thatwould be labeled December W - f o rWorld Day - a wor ld ho liday in the newcalendar. Thi s wou ld be a special dayout side of th e weekly cycle. Then thenext day-January I -wou ld be calledSunday, though it would no t actually beSunday.

AGAIK, in leap years- in 1956 forexample-there would be another worldholiday outside of the weekly cycle.June 30 woul d be a Sabba th, which youcan notice from the accompanying chart. But between Sabbath and "Sunday," July1, there would be an entire day not

counted at all! I t would r epl ace thepresent February 29. Th e next Sabbathwould then fall on a Friday!

Do you now see what t hi s wou ld doto your job? I f i t is difficult to find jobswhich r equi re no Sabbath work-howmuch mor e difficult would it be to findjobs requiring no Fr iday work!

Throughout the remainder of theyear 1956-supposing that the calendarwould be adopt ed t hen - the t rue Sabbat h woul d continue to occur on theday called "Friday"-the supposed 6t hday of the week. After December 30

another world day would intervene.January I - i n 1957-would then beTuesday, a lt hough it wou ld be l abeled"Sunday." And the Sabba ths would fallon t ~ eday the world would call 'Thursday.

Imagine wha t would happen to YOltif you insi st ed that you could not workon Thursday because it would be theSabbath! Think what would happen toyour job, to your family!

There can be no doubt abo ut thesat ani c o ri gi n of this wo rl d calendara calendar to bind the nat ions togethe rin a Baby Ion of confusion! Here, for thefirst time, we can pl ai nl y see how easyit would be for the civil power to enforce the "mark of the beast"!

Ref ormi ng t he Roman Cal enda r

Th e present calendar began with there forms of Jul iu s Caesar a bout 45 B.C.By the time of Pope Gregory, in 1582,the Julian calendar was so far off that

    10 dayswer e l opped

from Oct obe r tobring the beginning of spring back tothe tra di ti ona l d at e of March 21. Thi sa lte rat ion did NOT change the weeklycycle, as Mr. Armstrong exp la ined inthe booklet "Ha s Time Been Lost?"

Now conside r an important point:\f/ ho origina ted calendar reform?

I t was Jul iu s Caesar- the pontifexmaximtls of the Roman Empire. Pontifex maximus means supreme pontiff.According to Roman tra dit ion it is thesupreme pontiff who "had charge of th ecalendar, fixed dates of th e public festivals, and announced each mon th wha tdays were open and what were closedto PUBLIC BUSINESS."

I t was in th e capacity of sup remepontiff t hat Ju liu s Caesar exercised theauthority to ini tiat e calendar reform. The title of pontifex maxim tiS passedf rom the Caesars to the POPES in thefourth century-and as supreme ponti ffPope Gregory decreed a reform uf thecalendar in 1582.

I ask you: "Is no t thiJ fact signif icant?'

This negligence and lack of c once rnbrings REPROACH and SCORN on th every Work of God-and God's people.

The common phi losophy of thi s p re sent world of "do as l it tl e as po ssib le andget as much as you can for it" is a farcry from the dynamic, v igorous life ofthe God-fearing person wh o is busil yengaged in BEING A CHRISTIAN!

the alterat ion of th e weekly cycle. Froman official document of th e UN by thef orme r Secretary Gener al Trygve Lie,we read that "this disadvantage"-thechange of th e weekly cycle-"aJIeClsonly a very small part of the populationof the wor ld"-and hence is not wor thyof consideration!

Think of THAT! Th e .weekly. cyclewhich God set in motion IS no t important enough to be considered!

A continuous stream of articles inmagazines points Out that the vast major ity of PROTESTANTS WOULD ACCEPTTHE PROPOSED REVISIONS, that severalP ro te st an t bodi es already open ly support it, a nd t ha t only th e "extremely orthodox Jews and Protestants" oppose it.Ridicule and con temp t are he aped onall opponents in a world-wide effort tog ai n s up po rt for this satanic masterstroke to obliterate th e Sabbath.

A highly s igni fi cant a rt ic le appearedin th e Catholic paper, L'Osseroutore Romano, on June 28, 1954. This article

brings to light th e fact th at t he worldcalendar was ORIGINALLY DEVISED BYA CATHOLIC PRIEST, Abate Marco Mastrofini, and was descr ibed in a book publ ished in Rome in 1834.

In 1924 the Vatican i nf orme d th eLeague of Nations that t he re we re nodogmatic objections to the principle ofcalendar reform. Th e gradual trend overthe years has been for t he Church to encourage mor e a nd mor e t he alteration ofthe calendar. The a rt ic le in th e Italianpap er c on ti nu ed with this signi ficantcomment:

"I t is not qui te correct, if we wish tobe preci se, to call the proposed reform'a reform of the Gregorian calendar.'What would be altered are NOT thechanges made by Pope Gregory bu t thelength of the mon th s whi ch we haveinheri ted from pagan Rome, and thesequence of the weeks, which will bealtered by the introduction of int ercalary days."

Notice the two specific points in thisreport. The proposed changes would no talter the decrees of Gregory- the Catholic Church would never consent tosuch changes-but they would a lt er thel ength of months inherited from pagan

    February-March, 1955

Rome. What would be better than tomake the Church appear ant i-pagan bychanging th e l engt h of the months?and yet r et ai n the pagan calendar by rej ect ing the sacred c al endar wh ic h Godinstituted.

Next, notice that the sequence ofthe weeks woul d be altered-the Cathol ic Sunday would actually vary from one

day of the week to another through theyears. Mos t p eo pl e have assumed thatthe Catholic Church would rej ec t suchan alterat ion. I f th e Churc h were opposed to it, the Vatican would long sincehave condemned it. Bu t the Church hasnot done so' WHY?

In 1953, Archbishop Arnlero Cicognani, the apostol ic delegate in Washington, D.C., issued the following statemerit:

"With reference to the present attitude of th e Vatican on the subject ofthe world calendar, I have been askedto inform you that the Holy See nowhas th e quest ion under s tudy and WILLMAKE KNOWN ITS CO:'>CLUSIONS INTHE MATTER ATTHE PROPER MOMENT."(Quoted from the January 1955 "Catholic Digest.")

Th e Church is a lready making someof its conclusions known-c-unoflicially:The art ic le in the Janua ry issue of th e"Ca thol ic Diges t" makes this commentregarding th e sacredness of Sunday:"How may the word sacred be app li edto th e ca le nda r of any pe ri od? A calenda r is a mundane and worldly thing, and my dictionary defines sacred as being some th ing 'made holy, not profaneor common.' ' '

In other words, t he re is no sanct it y torhc- principle of Sunday as a "holyday"except by some authority-the Church- t o des ignat e it "holy." Chr ist 's supposed resurrection on Sunday did nothallow the first day of th e week. TheChurch "hallowed" Sunday. Bu t thechurch has NEVER defined what constituted Sunday! Th e Church has only acc ept ed the cust om of a seven-day week;it may, at its own discretion, designateth at the week is not actually a sevenday unbroken cycle. I t stil l has th e "authority" to re-define the week, makingSunday the first day of a new and different week!

No Divinely Appo int ed Week?

Th e Catholic Church specifically regards th e days of c reat ion as differentfrom twenty-four hour periods of time(though many individual Catholics thinkotherwise). In their rel igious trac ts weg lean thi s amazing s ta tement : "The sixdays stand for six successive creativeacts of the Almighty, not pe ri od s oftime." Abraham supposedly derived theweekly cycle " fr om the wande ri ng Arabtribes," which were moon worshippers! So says a pamphlet published by the

    Februarv-March. I')')')

Knighrs of Columbus, entitled "Remember the Sabbath . . . Keep it Holy!"

How plain that the Church rejectsany real sanctity of the weekly cycle. Therefore there is no real sanctity tothe idea t ha t Sundays are holy days because they are seven days apart. Nodogmatic reason stands in the way ofthe Church, should it think it pol it ical ly

sound to a pp ro ve t he world calendarwith its alte red weekly cycle, makingSunday fall on the first day of the newaltered week-though it would fall ondifferent days of the true week whichGod DID institute at creation.

This final CHANGE in time wuuldfur ther subs tant ia te the c laim tha t "theChurch' s laws are the laws of God." Th eVatican is the power tha t would thinkto change laws with respect to t ime, asDaniel prophesied under inspiration.

The acceptance of the new calendarwould also permit the Church ro disclaim any connection with the heathenplanetary week of seven days-whichwas actually a corruption of the trueweek. This planetary wcck gave us thepagan names of the days. The acceptance of the calendar would make thechurch, for the first time, the compl et eMASTER of t ime-designaung the year, the month and the week and the day!

Wat ch Wo rl d EventsYou can be sure that the Church will

not app rove the world calendar unt il itis safe so to do-un t i l she is completelysure that her decree will be followedand enfor ced by the civil power!

But the time could be very near for

its promulgation. The simplest methodof introducing the world calendar wouldbe to commence it in January of 1956,or in 1961 or 1967-when January 1naturally falls on a Sunday by the presenr calendar. In this way th e newchanges would go unno tic ed fa t several months until the first world dayoccurs, after which the weekly cyclewill be changed. Then it will be toolate to reject it! In 1956 th e weeklycycle would change in July.

Th e United Nations , and Protestantsand Cathol ics generally, are p ropagandizing the new calendar, seeking to

stimulate its acceptance. But the Catholic Church won't finally declare its conclusions until public opinion is mouldedinto yielding to the proposed alterations. Th e ominous trend is that thetime is gradually approaching for theadoption of calendar reform-perhapseven as early as next year-though itprobably will take longer to educatethe people for the change.

Every s ign points to the fact thatSaran-through his political and religious tolls-is ou t to destroy the last vestige of the week, to force sabbath keepersto give up their jobs, and finally to im-

    The GOOD NEWS

pose Sunday as a holiday upon the entire world,

It is time we awakened ourselves tothe dangers that threaten us-dangerswhich are secretly being injected intoa God- reje cti ng world. Thes e dangerscall for renewed FAITH and trust inGod that jusr as He delivered IsraelOut of Egypt with its lO-day week, so

He will del iver us ou t of the bondageof the p ropos ed worl d calendar whi chwill prevent many of you brethren fromholding your present jobs.

Bur FAITH must be proved by obedi-ence and absolute trust in the ALMIGHTY, faith means t ha t we must useour mind s and bodies to work out oursalvation. Many of you will be temptedto give up your t rust-remember howoften Israel of old said God was no tfair to cause them to wander in thewilderness when they could have hadfull employment in Egypt; others willbe tempted to lay down on the job andexpect ot her s to help them.

You need to read the article by TedArmstrong in this issue of the "GOODNEWS," which explains what will happe n to those who refuse to labor, wholay down on the job--or who give upthe faith!

These are times for sober, realisticthinking. We need to pray that, whatever happens to the calendar reformmovement, WE may be accountedwor thy to escape all th e troubles looming over the horizon.

    Six More Ministers

( Continued from page 2)ELDERS: All ministers wer e elders

in the Church at that time. There werealways several elders over local congregations, bu t th e leading elder-the paJ-tor, or bishop-s-designated the other local elders to "pr each the Gospel whe rehe thought best." (From page 254 ofCornba's book.)

Th e only differences that existed between the pastors was that arising fromage, or services performed, and personalrespect. "The Waldensian Barbe"-pastor or minister-"may therefore be compared to th e elders in Israel and in th e

primitive Church," says a historical document of the Waldenses. (From page147 of Cornba's work.)

DEACONS: This office of service wascarried ou t in the Church of God atthat t ime- in th e 1200s. Both men andwomen did works of service, thoughprimarily men because of physical hardships. (From page 254 of Comba'sbook, Th e History of the Waldemes inItaly. )

Some of these offices have continuedin the Church t o the p resent time, Butsince the days of Peter Waldo the entireform of God 's government has no t been

    Page 7

perpetuated, God used no one of apostolic rank during the Sardis period ofthe Church of God.

    Al l Offices Again Restored

Until the past very few years therewas no real evidence t hat God had setanyone in the office of apostle in HisChurch today. iHen cannot elect or

place in office an apostle. And the onlyway men can know whe n God has setone in that office is BY THE FRUITS.

My per sonal office, from the beginning of the "Ph iladelph ia" Church era, appeared to be that of evangelist. Atthat time God had used me to preachthe Gospe l in several towns and places,to bring numbers to repentance andconvers ion, to heal the sick, to raise upchurches in several locali ties, and to ordain elders and deacons in them. Butthe work itself had not grown to thepoint whe re ther e were other evangelists whom I should send to raise upchurches and ordain elders and deacons.

Th e first proclamation before theChurch that Go d had filled the office ofapostle was made by Herman Hoeh inhis s ermon at the Feast of Tabernacles,at Belknap Springs, Oregon, in 1951.He had not consulted me. I had noinkling of what he was to say. At th etime his words hi t my start led ears likean atomic bomb, an d my first impulsewas to deny and correct his statementimmediately. Only propriety restrainedthis impulse. I felt Mr. Hoeh was just alittle young, and carried away with himself. Never in my life had I thought ofoccupying such an office.

Bur in the light of events, the factof how God has set up Hi s Church today has become self-evident to aiL It isGOD'S doing. I f one does find, unexpectedly, t hat G od has set him in suchan office, there is only one choice-hemust accept it with full humility, realizing personal lack, and surrender ing theself totally to GOD as an instrument inHIS hands, r elying wholly upon Godfor guidance and every power and need.

For two years now, we have hadevangelists in the Church. Bu t nonehad filled the office of pas tor. Only one

was a minister- elder, and though wehad a few deacons, we had never had adeaconess.

So it was with great rejoicing-andan occasion never to be forgottenwhen, du rin g th e Sabbath services atPasadena on January 22, the evangelistsjoined me in appointing, first, SisterAnnie M. Mann as a deaconess-anoffice she has l ong filled, bu t withoutthe recognition. Next we installed Edwa rd E. Eckert in the office of deacon.

Then followed the o rd inat ion of thenew minis ters . Herbert Burk McNairand George A. Meeker were o rdained

as preaching or minister-elden. Then,Dean L. Blackwell, who has held theoffice of min is te r- eld er, was ordainedfor th e higher office of pastor. Finally,Garner Te d Armstrong, Wayne C. Cole, and Norman A. Smith were also ordained as passors.

    Not Like Worldly Churches

This form of governmem, and therelative importance or rank of each office, is entirely different from the humanforms of governmenr and admin is tration which men have set in the ch urchesof this world.

In the world the mos t impo r tan t office is usually called that of biJhop inprotestanr churches-or b ishop, a rchbishop, cardinal, and pope, in the Roman Catholic Church. Th e worldlychurches regard a bishop as on e in aurhoriry over the p
