Good and Geeky Books 13 May 2015APPLE WATCH TIPS Finding your
way around the Apple Watch You have to work out how to use the
button on the side, the digital crown, swipes up and down as well
as left and right. Then you also have the Force Touch to dive
deeper into the applications of the Apple Watch. Dont worry, after
a few days youll navigating the interface like a professional. It
only takes a short time playing with the Watch to work it all out.
Apple Watch Tips1When you rst get your Apple Watch, because it is a
new operating system the interface will seem strange. Good and
Geeky Books 13 May 2015Here are some of the basics Just by lifting
the wrist gets you into the interface on your watch. It opens to
the watch face or you can set it to go to the last used
application. You can save on battery usage by turning off the start
by lifting the wrist. Then you would need to tap the screen, the
same as you can do anyway when you have lifted your wrist and the
screen has already gone off. Swipe up to see your glances. You can
swipe to the left and to the right to move between the glances you
have set up. Swipe down to see your notications. Press the digital
crown to see all the icons for your applications. Press and hold
the digital crown to access Siri. Apple Watch Tips2Good and Geeky
Books 13 May 2015 Press the side button once to see your favourite
contacts. From there you can send a message or make a phone call.
Double-click the side button to go into Apple Pay. (If you are in a
country that accepts Apple Pay) Force Touch can be used on numerous
screens, giving you options depending upon the application you are
using. Wake to Your Last Used Application My best use case for the
Apple watch was to be able to control my podcast listening from my
wrist. When I rst got the watch, I was disappointed because this
didnt really happen. To use the Apple Watch to do something with
Overcast, I would lift up my arm and I would see the clock face rst
of all. Then I would have to swipe up to go to one of the glances
and hopefully the glance for Overcast would be the rst one
available, before I would be able to do anything. It would be
easier to get out my iPhone and control with the pause button on
the lock screen. Or it would be easier to open the application
after getting past the lock screen to press pause or play. Then I
found out it is possible to wake up the watch to your last used
application. So instead of seeing Apple Watch Tips3Good and Geeky
Books 13 May 2015the watch face when lifting the wrist, I would see
the interface for Overcast, assuming it was the last ive used.
Given that in the situations where I wanted this to work, Overcast
would be my last used application, this has been working very well
indeed. To change this from the default, you going to Settings
General Activate on Wrist Raise On and then you select Open to Last
Used App. Use your palm If you have a phone call coming in and you
are not able to take it, it is quick and simple to place the palm
of your hand over the watch face to deny the call. You may also go
into the settings in the Apple Watch application on your iPhone, go
to Sounds & Haptics and in there you will see a switch called
Cover to Mute. When this is activated you are able to mute the
Apple Watch by resting your palm on the display, covering it for at
least three seconds. You will feel a tap to conrm that the mute has
been enabled. Apple Watch Tips4Good and Geeky Books 13 May 2015Find
your lost iPhone Youll probably nd youre putting your phone down in
the house and not carrying it around, due to be able to see
notications on your Apple watch. You will almost certainly at some
point in time not remember, exactly where it was you left your
iPhone. No problem locate your iPhone from your Apple Watch. Swipe
up from the watch face to activate the glances, go to the settings
glance. Apart from gaining access to the buttons to turn the watch
to aeroplane mode, the do not disturb mode and the button to mute,
you also see the Ping iPhone button. The iPhone will make a noise
and you will be able to nd it. When Siri doesnt get it quite right
Although many people have commented on how the Siri application on
the Apple Watch seems to be more accurate than on the phone,
sometimes it doesnt get it quite right. When you are sending the
message, make sure to read before you Apple Watch Tips5Good and
Geeky Books 13 May 2015send. Depending upon to whom you are sending
the messages to, it might be okay to send, even if one word is not
quite right. That is choice one, but you can also choose to send
the audio instead. At least that is always going to be correct,
unless you have a speech impediment or you just said something
silly. Go into the Apple Watch application on your iPhone and go to
My Watch Messages Audio Messages. Here you can choose whether you
want to have the choice of dictation or audio. You can also choose
either Always Dictation or Always Audio. Creates custom messages
responses In the Apple Watch application on your iPhone go to
Messages and scroll down to Default Replies. In there you will see
six default replies. You can change the defaults by putting the
cursor into one of the responses and typing in what you would like
to use instead. At the moment, you cant add extra replies to have
more than 6 to choose from. At least it is easy to change what is
there as a default, to something you would personally use. Apple
Watch Tips6Good and Geeky Books 13 May 2015How to take a screenshot
Now and then there will be something on the screen that you would
like to capture. Its pretty easy to take a screenshot with your
Apple watch. All you have to do is to simultaneously press the side
button and the digital crown. The screen will ash and you will hear
the audio representation of a camera sound. Youll be able to nd the
picture you have taken in the Photos app. I just looked into the
Photos application on the Apple Watch and it was just showing my
favourites. If you need to see more, open up the Apple Watch
application on your iPhone and choose either All Photos or Recently
Added. You can also set the limit of the number of photos available
on your Apple Watch. Starting with 25 photos and anallocation of 5
MB up to 500 photos and an allocation of 75 MB. I have been using
the setting of 250 photos and 40 MB. It seems to work well for me.
Apple Watch Tips7Good and Geeky Books 13 May 2015Stop the
Misbehaving It is a version 1 product with version 1 software and
there will be times of misbehaviour. If your Apple Watch is not
working as it should do, then you can force the Apple Watch to do a
restart. Just press the side button until you see the Power off
slider and drag it across the screen. If things have gone really
bad you can do a force reboot by holding the side button and the
digital crown for at least 10 seconds. You will see the Apple logo
when the reboot starts. On one occasion I found the Apple Watch and
my phone were not talking to each other any more. They had a lovers
tiff and were giving each other the silent treatment. I tried a
reboot with both devices and nothing was working. In the end, the
only solution was to do a complete reset of the Apple Watch. You
will have backups of the watch on your phone, the amount of data
you lose depends upon how long since your last backup. When this
happened to me I was able to get most things back. I was a little
bit disappointed at losing my exercise data for that morning. I had
to start again in order to be able to close the activity rings by
the end of the day. Apple Watch Tips8You can also set the Apple
Watch to Power Reserve or Lock the DeviceGood and Geeky Books 13
May 2015Saving custom watch faces Im sure you know already that to
customise the default Apple Watch faces you do a Force Touch on the
watch display. If you want to keep a customised version of one of
the faces you should swipe through the faces to get to the screen
with a plus symbol and the word new. Give the screen a tap, make
all of your watch face choices so you have another watch face
saved. It would be nice if you could change the name of your saved
watch face. Maybe that ability will come when the operating system
gets updated over time. Sharing your location in Messages While you
are in a messages conversation use the force touch to bring up a
screen giving you three choices. The rst choice is to reply to that
person. Choice number two is to see the details of the contact and
from there you Apple Watch Tips9Good and Geeky Books 13 May 2015get
the option to contact by telephone or to choose which email address
you use within the Messages application on the watch. Choice three
is to send your location and obviously this can be very useful
indeed. Just click on the button and your location will go through
the Messages application to your contact. Force Touch to clear your
notifications Its easy enough to swipe left on a notication to get
to the button to clear the notication away. If you have a lot of
notications and you want to get rid of them all in one go, all you
have to do is to force touch the display. This brings up the Clear
All option, touch that and the job is done. Dealing with mail on
the Apple watch The Apple watches them all for notications of
emails and is not really practical as a device for sending or
replying. The thing to do is to ag emails to remind you which ones
to deal with later in your iOS email applications. If you are
getting too many notications regarding emails coming in you can
choose which mailboxes will show up on your watch. Using the iPhone
application go to My Watch Mail Include Mail.Apple Watch Tips10Good
and Geeky Books 13 May 2015You can choose a specic mailbox rather
than your inbox. You may also decide just to see emails coming in
from persons you have agged as being a VIP. You may need to
experiment with which works out best for you. In all, it is quite
customisable and you can just mirror your iPhone or set up custom
specications. The best thing to do is to test out a few of the
settings and work out which suits you best. Choosing your view in
Calendar In the calendar app on your Apple Watch you can choose
between two different views, Day and Today. If you click on day you
get a scrolling view of your day showing you whatever appointments
and events you have arranged. If you are in the day view you need
to choose the list view to change it back again. If you want to add
travelling time to your event youll need to make sure that the
travel times which is enabled. In order to do this you will need to
open up the calendar app on your iPhone and adjust the settings for
that event. Apple Watch Tips11Choose View Today View List ViewGood
and Geeky Books 13 May 2015Finding your way around by getting
haptic notifications Using the iPhone to nd your way around in the
city might not be such a good idea in some places. It could easily
get knocked out of your hand or even stolen. Why not let the Apple
Watch give you directions. For a left turn the watch will tap your
wrist twice and it will play three times.I had the sound on too and
it was a kind of plink-plonk sound. For a right turn you will feel
12 taps on your wrist.I found it is easy to distinguish between the
two haptic notications for left and right. The Apple Watch will give
you one long vibration when you arrive at your destination without
you having to lift your wrist to look for the blue dot. Your iPhone
will have been resting safely within your pocket or your bag. You
will see notications for 10 metres, 5 mtres and 1metre to the exact
positioning of the dropped pin. A great use would be to pinpoint
your car when you park it and have the watch guide you back to it.
Apple Watch Tips12Good and Geeky Books 13 May 2015Where do you want
the weather to be on your Apple watch Youll have to go to the Apple
watch application on your iPhone in order to set the default city
for your weather information. You can also set if you wanted to
show in glasses in the same place. You should tap on the section
Default City and there you can choose from current location and
from any cities you have already added using the web application on
your iPhone. I live in northern Spain and sometimes it is nice to
know how much it is raining in my native Birmingham in the UK when
Im sitting in the sun. Apple Watch Tips13Good and Geeky Books 13
May 2015Use handoff to go from the Apple watch to the phone It is
quite likely that you are looking at an email on your Apple watch
and you need to do something with it on your iPhone. It is very
simple to wake up your iPhone and if you look in the bottom
left-hand corner you will see an icon there for mail. It is just
the same as when you open up the iPhone and you have the icon for
the camera in the bottom right-hand corner if you quickly want to
take a photo. When you swipe up on the mail icon on your iPhone you
will get the prompt to unlock your phone and it will take you
straight to the email you want to work with. If you have already
started working with a specic email then it will continue where you
left off. You can also use hand off with other applications. Maps,
Messages, Phone, Reminders, Calendar as well as Siri. Just so long
as you are within Bluetooth distance for proximity you will be able
to use Handoff. Apple Watch Tips14Good and Geeky Books 13 May
2015There are some things you can do without the iPhone Most times
we are going to have the iPhone nearby us, but there will be
occasions when it is out of range. There are still some things you
can do without the iPhone being connected. Play music from a synced
playlist. use all of the timing features such as alarms and the
stopwatch. Continue tracking your activity with the activity
application Workout tracking. Look at your photos from the photo
albums you have Synchronised to the Apple Watch. Make purchases
with Apple Pay. The Apple watch mostly uses Bluetooth to keep the
connection between itself and your iPhone. For some things you will
still have a connection if you are the same Wi-Fi network. You will
still be able to send and receive messages using Messages
application, continue sending and receiving digital touch messages.
Siri will still work for you if you have a Wi-Fi connection to your
iPhone. Two ways to start using Siri 1. If you just raise your
Apple watch or just tap on the screen, when it wakes you just say
Hey Siri followed directly by your request. Apple Watch Tips15Good
and Geeky Books 13 May 20152. If you press and hold the digital
crown until you see the listing indicator, so your request and then
release the digital crown. It seems a little bit disappointing to
not have audio feedback from Siri. Maybe thatll come in a future
version of the operating system. I do like it when we have a
conversation! I nd that sometimes it works better to use the method
of pressing the digital crown and holding it until youve nished
speaking. This is because when I am dictating something in without
holding the digital crown, sometimes the screen will switch off
before I nished. When that happens you lose the text you have
already dictated into the Apple watch. If you are not sure what you
can do with Siri on your Apple watch, dont forget that can simply
ask the question, What kinds of things can I ask you? The Apple
Watch is super for creating timers and alarms. For me it a feture I
use often. You can set your modular watch face with the timer
showing. if you dont have one set to run or running you can tap on
it and start a new one with a click on the watch face. Apple Watch
Tips16Good and Geeky Books 13 May 2015Get Jiggly with it You can
organise your application icons on your iPhone and it is probably
the best way to do it. You go to app layout and move the apps to
where ever suits you best. The other way is to do it on the watch
itself (long press on the apps, to go into jiggly mode). With
limited space it is going to be ddly, but not impossible. Apple
