From the editor

For years, in golf travel, we’ve flown under the radar and especially in the field of marketing and promoting of a golf travel product that doesn’t have to play second fiddle to a similar product offered by any of our neighboring countries.

Times are changing and more and more, the world gets to know about golf in Indonesia. Hence as Indonesia is moving towards recognition as a genuine golf (desti)nation, exciting days await all that work in our golf industry.

A globally recognized event that will attract more attention for Indonesia “the golf (desti)nation” is the Asia Pacific Golf Summit (APGS2013). It will take place in Jakarta between 5 and 7 November when some 500 global golf industry big wigs will gather at the Shagri La hotel to discuss and debate matters related to the global golf industry.

Not much is known about the superb quality of our golf courses. Supported by our Ministry of Tourism, through the APGS2013 Indonesia finally will be able to show the world what fabulous golf product we are able to offer.

A highly attractive and special EARLY BIRD package is offered to all that work in Indonesia’s golf industry. Read all about it on page 7 - PRESS RELEASE.

To showcase Indonesia’s fabulous golf courses, in November a 250-page golf coffee table book titled INDONESIA’S FINEST COURSES will be published and sold in all Gramedia shops nationwide.

Written to be the definitive guide to Indonesia’s Finest Courses, this is the first and only hard cover book on Indonesia’s modern-day courses. To promote our finest courses, each and every participant in the APGS2013 will take home a copy of this unique book.

Finally this; after a long wait, Rainbow Hills’ third nine is in the making. Word is that the hotel (skeleton) that for more than one decade stood idle will finally be completed too. Read about it on page 3.

GOLF NEWS June 2013 - PAGE 3

Last week I traveled to Gadog up in the higher altitudes of the Sentul Highlands and paid a visit to Rainbow Hills. For more than fifteen years and not without reason, Rainbow Hills is one of my favorite courses in the Bogor area. It is located in a truly magnificent and dramatic part of the highlands that leads up to the Puncak (The Peak) - surely the most favorite of weekend retreats for Jakarta people. From the standpoint of environment and surroundings, Rainbow Hills may well be the most interesting course in the entire Sentul Highlands and pre-Puncak region.

Besides an ambitious residential area, back then, in 1995 and when it first opened, the original master plan showed three nine hole layouts. At the top of the site and at the entrance road that leads to the clubhouse, a rather luxurious hotel was supposed to stand guard over the valley in which the course is projected. In the first brochure that I happened to have picked up in the early days of launching, the hotel was announced as to be managed by the Sheraton Hotel Group (see artist impression above).

Unfortunately, in 1997 the Asian financial crisis hit home. All across Asia it slammed the breaks on all plans that weren’t already realized before the financial meltdown hit this part of the world in full force. Hence, what was announced in the early brochure as an “A Hotel of Distinction”, sadly became known for not more than Rainbow Hills “white elephant”.

RAINBOW HILLS ADDS ANOTHER NINE

Site of the new 9By Dennis G. Kloeth

The same fate befell the third nine. It was shelved too. And so it happened that all ambitious plans for the creation of “a world class course of uniquely Indonesian character” (1995 brochure) were put on ice.

When I arrived at Rainbow Hills the other day, fortunately, it seemed that the bleak days of the past are over. To my amazement I was confronted with a building activity that usually is only to be seen in a country that finally awakens and vividly travels the road to more wealth and prosperity.

Landscaping around the usually “ghostly” hotel showed remarkable difference from that wildly overgrown and neglected plot of land that was there during the days I last visited back in October of 2012. Even inside the severely deteriorated concrete “skeleton”, lots of building activity was clearly visible. Word is that the Pan Pacific Group – and more specifically their PARKROYALbrand – will take up management once a combination of rebuilding and renovation has seen its final days.

On the left of the entrance road, the color of brown from fresh dug-up land followed a meticulously staked-out trajectory that clearly resembled a genuine golf hole. Here and there locations for future bunkers were even visible. Driving towards the clubhouse, on the left more newly projected holes became visible and clearly, the once shelved plans for the third nine are now coming back to live. Finally and definitely. (see next page)

GOLF NEWS June 2013 - PAGE 4

Adjacent to the finishing hole #27, ground has been prepared for a brand new building that eventually will serve as a clubhouse for this part of the impressive Gadog landscape. Enough space will be left over for surrounding villas that will be part and parcel of a lodging product that has been envisioned by the owners long before the financial crisis halted all building plans for such.

The addition of the third nine will surely bring a new dimension to an already fabulous facility. It surely also will enhance joy of play for the membership and all that have patronized the club during the past two decades. The arrival of the third nine finally will realize and complete the plans that were made in the early nineties and that unfortunately were “temporarily” halted by circumstances not wished by any and all that are closely involved and/or work at Rainbow Hills.

ABOUT THE COURSE

At Rainbow Hills golfers will enjoy an astonishing visual drama. Designed by Bob Moore from USA-based JMP Golf Design Group, the course takes full advantage of a picturesque setting, carefully sculpting the abundant natural gifts of the site into a spectacular golf landscape.

The new nine takes the same design principles to heart and here too Bob Moore’s “signature” will be stamped on a layout of international quality and standard.

To create an exciting series of golf holes, each fairway is carefully sculptured into the site, each distinctly different from the others. For all the right reasons, on the original 18-holes layout the par 5 hole #13 is the signature hole. Standing atop the hole, your tee shot drops a hefty 60 to

100 meters onto a downhill fairway. A well placed second shot to the right of the green-side lake will give you a shot into a well protected undulating green that is positioned on the left of the water hazard.

Standing in the site where the new nine is projected and overseeing an undulating and (still barren) hilly terrain, no doubt here too a signature hole will eventually emerge.

Finesse and accuracy will be rewarded, for the Rainbow Hills course encourages initiative and well-placed shots. No matter what your score card reads, as you stroll from the final green you will take with you a sense of pride, satisfaction and accomplishment, eagerly looking forward to your next chance to play Rainbow Hills.

Like so many times in the past, it is proven that organizing a golf show in Indonesia is a tricky thing to do. Indonesia’s golf course and equipment industry are not exhibition-savvy while exhibition organizers are a bit clueless as to how to create an event that attracts golfers in their thousands. One thing is for sure; organizing a well thought and professional golf exhibition entails a lot more than simply putting together a couple of golf booths in a designated part of a hall and as part of a bigger non-golf event.

In this case INAGOLF 2013 (between 23 and 26 May) was integrated into INASPORT and INABICYCLE two bigger events that completely overshadowed the 10+ golf booths that were booked and occupied by some golf courses and golf related companies that are considered to be “promotion savvy” to say the least. Unfortunately INAGOLF found a home in one and the same hall with a Nusantara Tourism show, and that, as it turned out to be, wasn’t a good idea, as the latter attracted a rather golf-alien public of house wives and brochure-hunting school kids that were completely oblivious to all that has to do with golf.

Golf Link represented Jakarta’s Palm Hill Golf Club and New Kuta Golf Club in Bali. Other Jakarta golf clubs that were present were Padang Golf Modern and Jababeka Golf & Country Club. The Indonesia Association of Golf Course Owners (APLGI) too participated with a booth while from Bandung Giri Gahana was present.

Active as they are, Surabaya golf came out in force with a combined stand from Bukit Darmo, Finna Golf, Taman Dayu and Ciputra Golf Club. See Picture. Visitors were asked to putt on three different mini holes after which they were given a goodie bag with relevant information on the four courses. Strangely enough, from Surabaya, Pakuan Golf Club wasn’t part of the combined Surabaya Golf initiative and they occupied their own lone stand.

GOLF NEWS visited INAGOLF and came away with a sense of pity towards the golf industry people that had spent quite some money and that went through a lot of work for the sake of a handful of visitors.

The other day I headed for Daan Mogot to renew my Indonesian driver’s license.

After having paid Rp.850.000 to “the agent”, and after having had my (rather poor quality) picture taken, without even having to give proof of my driving abilities, one hour later I was done and on my way home.

At a certain point, however, I made a U-turn that I apparently wasn’t allowed to make and YES, as fully expected, some 100 meters onwards, a bunch of law enforcers were ready to welcome me with open arms. Knowing how the Police in Indonesia functions and operates, I wasn’t that surprised. In fact, I found myself contemplating as to what amount I would pull to “get off the hook”.

And as I wound down the car window, a round-faced Police officer greeted me with a bright smile and said in Indonesian, “Excuse me Sir…, you’ve made a U-turn there where it’s not allowed to make one”. As if stung by a wasp, immediately I replied, “Excuse me Sir, I do not speak Indonesian. Can you speak English?” "Little bit, mister, little bit", he answered with a pretty proud grin. "You make mistake mister", he spoke with a serious face.

"You see sign there?"…., and he pointed to a signboard on the other side of the road that was partly obscured by bushes.

"Wow”, I said, “You police man very clever ya, to stand here", and he smiled even wider than before showing a beautiful row of brilliantly white teeth. “You have license Mister and car paper”, he asked me friendly. Proudly, I showed him my STNK (car registration document) and my brand new SIM (Indonesian driving license as it is written on this credit-card like document). Curiously he looked at my SIM and said, “So, You born in Jakarta and not speak Indonesia? How can?”

In disbelieve, he then again looked at my SIM and this time he examined my (poorly taken) picture and when he looked back at me he asked; "How old you are Mister?”

"Sixty-seven", I told him.

"Hmmmm”, and he continued “Very old ya....!"

"Not old", I told him, "From the waist down I am 22 Sir".

Rather surprised he paused, looked at me again and spontaneously he burst out in laughing.

“You very funny man and maybe also very horny man yes….?”

"You many girlfriend", he asked me with a gigantic question mark in his eyes.

"No Sir, only 5".

"Only 5", he laughed.

“Yes Sir, only 5”!

"You Muslim.....?”

"No Sir, just very horny".

t’s well documented that in many fields Indonesia is not consistent (enough) when it comes to promoting itself. In promoting our fabulous golf product, for

instance, it’s rather unfortunate that we (often) lack “an eye for an opportunity”. Often do we just stand on the sidelines, while our neighboring countries make enormous strides in putting themselves up with the best, albeit in staging of world class golf tournaments that attract first-tier and world class players, or in global golf travel for that matter!

It’s safe to say that because of our own doing, for many years Indonesia has been utterly neglected as a world class golf (desti)nation. A force “not to be reckoned with”, if you will!

Fortunately, in the years to come, we get a pretty neat chance of making up for lost ground. Firstly; because we now (seem to) have a tourism minister that understand golf and recognizes its value as a possible contributor to the country’s rather poor tourism arrival figure. And secondly; because tournaments such as the Indonesian Open and The Indonesian Masters have brought forward that (indeed) Indonesia is home to some terrific courses.

As a result of all of that, foreign golfers finally seem to have found their way to Indonesia’s fabulous courses. Important is now that we take advantage of this momentum and become more creative in promoting our golf product that, without doubt, is second to none.

Attracting the world’s attention to “Indonesia, the golf destination” is a clever thing to do. Organizing high-purse tournaments that will attract the world’s top players is one way to go. The other is by hosting golf travel shows and golf

summits and seminars that will bring global industry people from around the world to our shores.

The Asia Pacific Golf Summit 2013 (APGS) is one such summit. As it is supported by Indonesia’s ministry of tourism, this year the APGS2013 will be held in Jakarta. As it hosts several hundreds global golf industry big wigs, it guarantees to bring major change in how the international golf community may views us in future. Being in Jakarta and “seeing it all for themselves”, APGS’s global participants will finallt realize that indeed Indonesia is home to a thriving golf course industry that is second to none. I reckon that the APGS2013 may be the start of bringing us the long-awaited recognition we so eagerly desire, and here is why.

The APGS is in its 7th successful year. It is an event that brings together some 500 highly knowledgeable and skilled golf industry people from around the world. From golf course owners, operators and general managers to

superintendants specialized in turf and maintenance, and from administration professionals to education and training specialists. During the APGS they all exchange notes and experiences and transfer knowledge and skills. It’s safe to say that the APGS can be an inspiring think thank and a valuable source of information and school of learning for all that work in our local golf industry.

Who doesn’t remember the days when our golf industry was managed by foreign General Managers? In the past two decades, and by way of transfer of knowledge, gradually our golf industry phased out foreign management. The majority of foreigners were replaced by local professionals that all have gone to school on what foreigners brought to the table in daily managing of a golf club. And that included Human Resources, member & guest relation, F&B, and turf management as well as overall course maintenance. Our local professionals were eager to learn “all the tricks of the trade” and today, the majority of Indonesian courses are managed by locals who know a thing or two about managing a golf club.

However, without constant upgrading of knowledge no progress is made. With a growing influx of foreign golfers (tourists), our local golf club managers, as well as owners’ and golf club management associations, may well make sure that they do not fall behind in knowledge related to the overall management of a golf facility.

Seeing and hearing from other professionals is learning, and thus progressing. The APGS2013 brings some 500 global golf industry professionals to our doorstep. From them we can learn. Hence the APGS could just be the ideal learning

platform for all people that work in our domestic golf industry!

Having said that, in the past weeks after the announcement of Jakarta hosting the APGS2013, surprisingly from certain sections in our industry I sensed some negative vibes about the summit. As to why this is the case, I am truly amazed.

Recently I read a Jakarta Post article (May 29) that dealt with an acute shortage of middle management due to a poor educational system that exists in Indonesia.

And here I quote; Indonesian companies are facing a critical skill shortage in middle management as the lack of talented workers will continue to worsen in the coming years due to a poor educational system and rapid growth of the services sector, a report says.

Global consulting firm The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) estimates that the talent shortage in middle level management, which last year reached 13 percent, would further worsen to reach as high as 56 percent by 2020, despite Indonesia’s bright demographic profile.

According to BCG’s report, both senior level and entry level management will face shortages as well, though not as severe as the ones faced at the middle level. End of quote!

In our golf industry we’re lucky enough to have plenty access to specialized education. Because it’s readily available, in our golf industry talented people can be groomed into clever and successful golf course managers and staff, or field workers for that matter. Moreover, suppliers of golf course maintenance products are all too happy to train and groom (often for free) our talented people in their specific trade.

Like often is the case in Indonesia, we may think that “we know it all”. Chances are that we do not further develop and educate ourselves. Worse even, we stop learning from others that have extensive experience. If that happens, shortage in middle management as well as the lack of talented workers (BCG report) in future may also apply to our industry.

By participating and attending the Asia Pacific Golf Summit 2013 - and this time without having to engage in expensive travel overseas - our local golf industry people are able to learn, absorb and enhance general knowledge about a (service) industry that is rapidly growing and of which we’ve only scratched surface.

So let’s stop being negative and embrace the fact that come

November we are able to learn from some 500 global golf industry professionals from more than 30 countries. Let’s welcome them warmly and in exactly the hospitable manner that we became so famous for throughout the world.

Rest assured that the APGS2013 will not only bring global recognition for Indonesia and its golf industry people and (golf ) services product, but it surely also brings a wealth of learning and experiences from which we all can benefit for the betterment of overall customer’s satisfaction related to our golf product. And that alone, will make our business grow and grow.

With a final round of 67 and a total score of 273 (-15), Bernd Wiesberger came out on top to win the Indonesian Masters. “I’ve been in good form, heading into the tournament. I’ve got so many friends and supporters out here and it’s really nice to perform so well in front of my coach. I really enjoyed my time here in Jakarta. It has been a good week”, an ecstatic Wiesberger said during the final press conference.

“It’s probably good that I got to play with Ernie the first two rounds. It was relaxed as he’s such a great guy. I enjoy coming here, but as far as traffic is concerned, it’ll be better if they make the highway a little wider! I like the people, the culture and I’m fortunate that I’ve my coach who’s based here - Philippe De Busschere and head coach at the Leadbetter Golf Academy at Cengkareng Golf Club.

“My main tour is over in Europe. We do not have the schedule for next year yet but I’ll do my very best to come back and defend the title”, he continued.

Ernie Els finished second and this is what he had to say; “I think Bernd played better than all of us. I played with him for three rounds and I think he deserves to win. I played and fought hard. I wasn’t quite at my best but had a good time.”

In Indonesia, Pan Pacific Hotels Group currently manages two other hotels under the “Pan Pacific” brand – namely, Pan Pacific Jakarta and Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort, located at Bali’s magnificent southwest coast, boasting the Greg Norman-designed Nirwana Bali Golf Course.
