Same Day Surgery Center 973-450-2750

The Same Day Surgery Center is easily accessible and offers the benefits of a private outpatient

facility with the comfort and support of a full-service medical center. A wide variety of surgical

techniques are available, in specialties including ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat, podiatry,

plastic and reconstructive surgery, orthopedics, gynecology, general surgery, gastroenterology,

urology and oral surgery, and the low-risk Cardiac Catheterization Lab. Your physician can

advise whether same day surgery is right for you, depending on the type of procedure, your

general health and personal circumstances. Surgical patients at Clara Maass have the option of

undergoing “bloodless surgery,” which allows physicians to perform a range of surgical proce-

dures that would ordinarily include transfusions, by using techniques that dramatically reduce,

and virtually eliminate, blood loss.

Sleep Disorders (The Center for) 973-450-2444

The Center for Sleep Disorders can help improve the lives of those suffering from any number

of conditions, such as insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome and other dis-

orders. At the Center, four types of non-invasive studies are conducted and comprehensive eval-

uations are performed by sleep specialists. Patients may participate in an overnight sleep study

and/or a series of nap studies during the daytime. The studies include nocturnal polysomno-

gram, nasal CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) titration, multiple sleep latency and a

split night study, which utilize sophisticated diagnostic equipment to monitor brain, heart, respi-

ratory and muscle activity during sleep. The Center is accredited by the American Academy of

Sleep Medicine.

Transitional Care Unit (TCU)

The Transitional Care Unit (TCU) at Clara Maass Medical Center offers a special caring envi-

ronment for patients who no longer require all the resources of an acute care hospital, but who

are still too sick to be cared for at home. The TCU is a 20-bed unit which provides a sub-acute

level of care within the acute care hospital, an option in the continuum of care. Typically

patients are admitted to the TCU for the following types of care: cardiac recovery, post surgical

recovery, oncology and pain management, pulmonary management, skin and wound care, and

complex medical management. A few extra days for recovery in the TCU can give patients just

the time they need to regain strength and function needed to successfully be discharged home.

Patients may stay in the TCU for up to eight days of care. Rehabilitation services are provided

by the Saint Barnabas Rehabilitation Affiliates. The TCU is staffed by physicians, nurses, social

workers, rehabilitation therapists, and dieticians who follow an interdisciplinary team approach

to help patients transition to home so they may live independently or with some assistance.
