If you’ve lived in California yourentire life as I have, it’s easy toforget that summer temperaturesranging from just above freezing towell over 100 degrees in differentlocales are normal in a way theyaren’t in, say, Indiana. Yes, theGolden State brings you mountaingolf, desert golf, beach golf, lakegolf, urban golf, airport golf, country lane golf—you name it,you can probably play it on anygiven day. As Louie Armstrongfamously sang, “What a wonderfulworld…” And it’s ours, here, for thetaking.
As we begin our 15th year ofpublishing Golf Guide, we aregrateful to the thousands ofreaders who take advantage of the golf course directory servicewe provide. Many of you also getyour money-saving "play golf"
certificates from our website, which we appreciate as wepresume you do. We are alsograteful to the hundreds of "golf-centric" businesses such as golfcourses, golf shops and hotels thatprovide distribution points for eachissue. If you don't find copies ofGolf Guide at your favorite course, ask the management to requestmore copies; we’re happy tooblige.
In the months ahead, we will behosting a few special “Play Days”at various courses we havepartnered with. I can’t promisethey’ll be mountainous or in desertoases, but that’s part of the charmof Golf in the Golden State—it’salways ready to surprise. Go onlineto GolfGuideMagazine.com formore information and sign-ups.
Golf tournaments come and go,and then come around again,if they’re lucky. If luckier still,
they develop a “brand ident i ty,” intoday’s market ing par lance, thatdistinguishes them in some unique wayand ensures their ongoing popularitynot only among golfing aficionados, butthe general sporting public, too.
Wel l , the Nature Va l ley F i rs t TeeOpen has branding identity to burn, astory to te l l about hope andperseverance and investment in youthand the goodwi l l o f a gaggle ofaccomplished golf pros who put thissingular event on their calendar eachyear for reasons far beyond the lures offame and another good payday. Whereelse do 81 Champions Tour players getmatched up with 81 junior golfers aged15-18 in a 54-hole Gross Best Bal lformat, in which the juniors are drawnfrom areas and circumstances where
golf and its many character-buildingqualities are generally underexposed?
The answer to that quest ion:Nowhere else.
Which is why the place to be comeJuly 3-8 for scinti l lat ing golf with abackstory the length of a Russian novelwill be the Pebble Beach Golf Links andthe Del Monte Golf Course. That’s whenthese famed Monterey Peninsu lacourses will share hosting duties as theNature Va l ley people (granola bar
makers extraordinaire) kick off theirsecond-year sponsorship of this now9th annual event.
The First Tee is a Florida-founded(1997) organization that has now grownto 750 locat ions and has served tointroduce and foster the character-and-skill-building game of golf to some 6.5million youth across all 50 states andsix international venues. The programis unabashedly idealistic in promotingtime-honored “Core Values” that leadoff with “Honesty” and “Integrity,” andwhich thus set the tone for all First Teeevents. Luckily for golf fans, this eventincludes the coming together yet againof just 81 of those 6.5 mill ion youthwith their PGA pro partners. (Another162 hand-picked amateurs round outthe field.)
Make no mistake: this is great golf, and for the pros who have their ownhead-to-head tourney within the pairingup with juniors, it’s a prestigious affair.
Hale Irwin, Gil Morgan, Ben Crenshawand Craig Stadler are among the pastwinners; Mark O’Meara, Tom Lehmanand Fuzzy Zoeller are back for anothertry. Add in the celebrity star power ofF i rs t Tee boosters and tourneychai r /co-chai r C l in t Eastwood andArnold Palmer, and you’ve got the
makings of some dazzl ingsummer days in one of theearth’s true garden spots.
Enhancing the allure is thefact that the Nature ValleyF i rs t Tee Open goes farbeyond—or perhaps justdeeper ins ide—the gameitself. Its explicit mission isto foster in tangib les ofcharacter and to g ivedeserving kids a boost upthe sometimes long twistingladder of life. This lends itthat inva luable tone of
“perspective,” of something more goingon than great golf in a pretty locale.
A search through tournamentarchives reveals all: one junior playerwhose Tutsi tribal family had barelyescaped genocide in the Congo, another who had survived a seriouscase of leukemia. Obstacles of varyingheights have faced virtually every otherjunior player who has proven his or hermett le in overcoming somet imesarduous l i fe circumstances—not tomention qualifying tournaments thatgot them to Pebble Beach.
That’s just part of the backstory thatcan warm hearts with all the blaze of aPalm Springs summer afternoon. As for
the details: $35 scores you entrance tothe entire tournament, with free parkingat Pebble and f ree shut t le to DelMonte. Practice rounds begin Tuesday, the Coca-Cola Champions Challengegoes off at 2:30 Thursday. All playersrotate through both courses Friday andSaturday, then fields are split with topqual i f ie rs f in ish ing at Pebble onSunday, the remainder at Del Monte.
And you know all about the splendorof the Monterey Peninsula. If you don’t,it’s high past time you experience itfirst-hand.

Beautifully situated amid the rolling hills, vineyards and ancient oaks of Napa’s tranquil Pope Valley, historic AetnaSprings has been a favorite spot for golf in the wine country for more than a century. The course dates back to1891, which would make it the oldest golf facility in California. Revered for its rustic natural beauty, the AetnaSprings resort opened in 1873, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2007, Tom Doakmeticulously renovated the original Aetna Springs nine-hole golf course. Famous for working with the naturalterrain rather than rearranging it, the renowned golf course designer carefully maintained the beauty of the oldworld style course. In 2010, GolfWorld Magazine recognized Aetna Springs as the 4th best 9-hole golf course inAmerica. This challenging 6114-yard layout creates a series of ingenious challenges for the thinking golfer, whomust further contend with mature oak trees and streams on nearly every hole. The restored par-3 fourth hole is a152-yard challenge for even the most experienced golfer. Aetna Springs is a consistent surprise for new visitorslooking to golf off the region’s well-trod fairways.

California’s Gold Country never looks more green than it does at Apple Mountain Golf Resort, where toweringpine, cedar and madrone trees frame one of the picture-prettiest courses you’ll ever come across. The grandnessof the Sierra Nevada is evident at every turn of this 6,308-yard, par-70 beauty designed by Algie Pulley. Perchedlow in the Sierra range off Hwy 50 in the mountain town of Camino, Apple Mountain is neither snowbound norheat-baked, instead offering consistently gorgeous weather to complement its playability. You’ll find plenty ofshotmaking challenges, though, on holes playfully named after Gold Country icons such as “Ante Up,” “MotherLode” and “Whisky Bowl.” A 300+ yard driving range and 12,000 square feet of greens let you pitch, putt, chipand breathe as deep as you please of the mountain air. Be sure to check out the “All You Can” Special runningthrough the summer of 2012. $49 weekdays, $59 Friday, and $69 Weekends and Holidays gets you golf with acart, All-You-Can eat buffet, and warm-up balls.

The intriguing name “Beau Pre” becomes even more intriguing when attached to a golf course tucked away in aspicturesque and sparsely populated an area as Beau Pre Golf Club in McKinleyville, Humboldt County. Beau Premeans “beautiful meadow” in French, and the course fits that billing with lush fairways of pine and spruce trees, lovely ponds, and elevated tees to heighten the visual splendor. Water comes into play on nine holes and sandtraps are strategically placed. “Majestic” is the operative word for this area some 250 miles north of SanFrancisco. Redwood National Park and Six Rivers National Forest provide part of the backdrop, and the PacificOcean fills out the rest. Travelers bound for Oregon find Beau Pre a perfect stop, with daily public play, excellentin-town lodging, and plentiful other outdoors opportunities available to recreationally minded golfers.McKinleyville also hosts the World's Tallest Totem Pole-at 57,000 pounds and 160 feet high, it was carved fromone redwood tree.

Yes, it’s unusual for a 9-hole course in a tiny faraway town to exert a continued hold on golfers ranging from Joe Six-Pack to Joe Montana. But then Buckingham Golf & Country Club is an unusual course. Tucked into Lake County’s Buckingham Parkarea of “metropolitan” Kelseyville (population 3,000), this country-fresh course boasts nearly year-round blue skies, a No. 3 rankingamong Northern California’s 9-hole courses by the publication On the Links, and universal acclaim for its tremendously true greens.

The Legends Course at Diablo Grande Golf and Country Club takes its name partly from the two golfing legendswhose sole design collaboration occurred here. Jack Nicklaus and Gene Sarazen created a par-72 course on theedge of the Bay Area that befits the classic elegance so reflected in their own approach to the game. Now underthe management of Troon Golf along with its sister course, “The Ranch,” Legends is rimmed by rolling hillsides, vineyards, creeks and canyons. Its location in Patterson means easy access from the entire East Bay and SanFrancisco, while offering all the features of a true getaway. The challenge of traditional Nicklaus bunkering issoftened by wide fairways, though smallish greens demand focus and touch. Five tee placements put you 4905 to7112 yards from the cup, with a long of 547 yards greeting you at No. 2. Recipient of numerous accolades sinceits 1998 debut, Legends, well deserves its already classic reputation in Bay Area golf.

This is golf as you’ve never known it. The almost other-worldly beauty of Death Valley presents the starkestpossible contrast to the greenery of Furnace Creek Golf Course and accompanying Resort, right in the heart ofthis 3.3 million acre national park. As “the world’s lowest elevation golf course” (214 feet below sea level),Furnace Creek presents an environment that for sheer drama has few peers. The light alone goes through everyshade of intensity, and as the weather cools during prime golf season from fall through spring, the 18-hole, par-70 course reveals its full magnificence. (Summer golf tends to be for very early birds only.) Solid golfing skills arerequired on the deceptively short 6,236-yard layout. The prime handicap hole is No. 6, a 440-yard stretch overwater and into a prevailing wind, with a large Tamarisk tree guarding the left side of the green. Furnace Creekcries out for stay-and-play, of course, and the Inn (seasonal) and Ranch both offer overnight packages. Definitelyput this one on your Bucket List!

Mare Island Golf Club is now a public course due to the scores of military base closures that occurred around thecountry in the 1990’s. The Mare Island Navel Shipyard was decommissioned on April 1, 1996, and the then 9-holegolf course was re-designed by renowned and Bay Area golf course architect, Robin Nelson. Bay Area golferswere among the clear winners when Mare Island became available for play. Gorgeous views of San Pablo Bay, theSacramento River Delta and the Golden Gate Bridge await you from nearly every angle of this 18-hole links-stylegolf course. The exquisitely maintained greens are frequently reached with uphill shots that will challenge youraccuracy and touch. The course has the charming distinction of being the “oldest course west of the Mississippi”(built in 1892). Modest green fees for 18-holes play well off the million dollar views you’ll enjoy throughout yourround. Please visit our website for rates and additional coupons.

The purity of a true links course in the heart of the Bay Area has been exerting a powerful draw upon the region’sgolfers since Oakland’s Metropolitan Golf Links opened in April 2003. Managed by Petaluma-based CourseCoInc., this public course features tremendous expansiveness as it opens to vistas of the Bay Bridge, San Francisco, the Oakland Hills and the Peninsula. Fred Bliss and Johnny Miller created a masterful rhythm acrossMetropolitan’s 7,015 yards, with golfers challenged to find their own groove amidst the prevailing winds, largelyopen and rolling fairways, and greens that offer just enough variation and surprise to keep your putting game on full alert. Mostly treeless and true, the course puts a premium on systematic shaping of your shots from left to right, up and down. An estuary runs prominently through six holes, with two lakes and a pond also addingwater interest. Affordable rates top off the allure of this Golf Digest’s, 2006, 4-1/2 star “Best Places to Play” inBay Area golf.

Yes, it’s unusual for a 9-hole course in a tiny faraway town to exert a continued hold on golfers ranging from Joe Six-Pack to Joe Montana. But then Buckingham Golf & Country Club is an unusual course. Tucked into Lake County’sBuckingham Park area of “metropolitan” Kelseyville (population 3,000), this country-fresh course boasts nearly year-round blueskies, a No. 3 ranking among Northern California’s 9-hole courses by the publication On the Links, and universal acclaim for itstremendously true greens.

Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park has a wide following among golfers who revel in the challenges posed bywater hazards on 16 of the 18 holes. Bordering on the Napa River wetlands, the course was designed by BobBaldock and Jack Fleming in 1967 as a partially treelined obstacle tour and the rest wide open links style. Pinetrees rim the course, slowly being replaced by native redwoods and other indigenous varieties. The signature 8thhole is described as a “reachable” par-5, though water left, right and front sometimes makes the “reach” seemmore like a frantic grasp. Napa has served as a qualifier for the U.S. Open and the Anheuser-Busch tourney in thepast. Significant enhancements have been made on the course in the past three years, including new cart paths, tees and bunkers. In addition, the golf shop and clubhouse were recently remodeled, providing a wonderful newatmosphere in the restaurant, Jack’s Bar & Grill. Featuring a menu of specialty sandwiches and distinct salads,Jack’s is an ideal venue for a meal before or after your round.

Pacific Grove Golf Links hearkens back to a time when a simple yet elegant design allowed a course's naturalfeatures to assume center stage. Here along the dramatic coastline of the Monterey Peninsula, you'll enjoy wide-ranging views highlighting geography (Point Pinos, Crespi Pond), wildlife (Pacific Blacktail deer, seals, sealions, otters, pelicans, and an annual migration of Monarch Butterflies), and enchanting human constructions likethe Point Pinos Lighthouse (the longest continuously operating lighthouse—since 1855—in California). The frontnine was designed by Chandler Egan in 1932 to guide players through the forested areas of Pacific Grove. In1960, Jack Neville, the original designer of the Pebble Beach Golf Links, added to the mystique with a back ninelaid out in true links style, traversing dunesland as it finds its way to the sea. With small greens and few bunkers,Pacific Grove offers an unpretentious golfing challenge in an area renowned the world over as a feast for the eyesand a tonic for the soul.

Aficionados of traditional golf (at traditional prices) will find a highly agreeable experience awaiting them atSkywest Golf Course in Hayward. Bob Baldock designed this par-72 municipal course along classic lines when itdebuted in 1964. Tree-lined fairways can cause the usual kinds of trouble for errant tee shots, though largegreens tend to play true. The par-3s all play long at 140-200 yards, and two lakes insist that you pay themattention on the front and back nines. The three former tee placements (6,789 yards from the back) were recentlyaugmented by a new 5,406, par-73 option from the front. The back 9’s bent grass greens have just been rebuiltto complement the dramatic 6,000 square foot clubhouse that opened in 2005. While it is true that no two golf courses are alike, the degree of difference at Trinitas Golf Club in CalaverasCounty is such that golfers in the know from all over California and beyond have been making pilgrimages theresince the course’s opening in 2007. (And then going home to tell others about it.) In his homage to “the antithesisof corporate golf,” owner/designer/builder Mike Nemee has created a visionary course that sprang from hisoriginal desire to build a hole or two for recreational purposes when not tending the sprawling olive orchard andwildlife sanctuary on his 280-acre property. That desire morphed into the wonder of Trinitas. Three distinct coursemilieus include the first six holes in oak-suffused woodlands, the second six mostly treeless links style, and thethird six a hybrid. There is nothing symbolic when aficionados call Tuscany Golf Course in Henderson, Nevada a “desert oasis.” Setagainst the starkly beautiful and light-filled southern Nevada mountains, Tuscany’s gorgeously kept fairways andgreens are rimmed by plentiful water, palm and mesquite trees, and drop-dead views ranging from the nearbyLas Vegas skyline to stately Mt. Charleston 12,000 feet above the valley floor. Ted Robinson had a feast drawingup the 6,906-yard layout amidst the Italian-themed architecture of the clubhouse and Tuscany Café. Holes 9 and18 draw consistent raves as dazzling—and sometimes dizzying—par-4 challenges that stretch 400+ yards, withwater, bunkers and tricky greens menacing you all the way. Just 20 minutes from the Las Vegas strip, Tuscanyoffers a classy but less costly alternative to Vegas courses, leaving visitors more flush to pursue the many otherentertainment options they presumably want to include on a tourist weekend. Tuscany is one daytime delight thatwill always keep them happily asking for more.

Most Bay Area residents know the magic of being out-and-up-bound from the Sacramento Valley, heading for theglory of the Sierra range. Nearly halfway to Lake Tahoe, above the heat and winter fog and steeped in trees andlush meadows, sits a chunk of year-round golfing magic not to be missed while it still permits public play: thedecade-old Winchester Country Club in Meadow Vista. Just minutes off Highway 80 past Auburn but secluded asif another world, this site was enough to entice both Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Jr. to team up in revealing itscharms. Accolades from virtually all the golf magazines have been streaming in ever since. They all cite exquisiteviews of the Sierra and the Sacramento Valley, reasonable rates ($75 weekdays), impeccable conditions, anaward-winning clubhouse, and a course blended seamlessly with its rolling foothills topography. These featuresand more make Winchester a must-play before plans for returning it to fully private status are realized.

Classic” golf can be defined in many ways, but if your notion includes a landscape uncluttered by surroundinghomes, with mountains in almost every direction, under huge skies, on a course whose history includes five PGANike Tour events, then Windsor Golf Club is the perfect example. Windsor's 1989 debut helped transform itsnamesake Sonoma County town from a sleepy rural hamlet into a classy destination that includes an inviting newdowntown area built from scratch. An extensive fairway sanding program has now made it a 12-month course, allthe better to accommodate the 12-month wine tasting that golfers can pursue almost immediately outside thecourse boundaries. Although holes 2 and 7 were both consistently ranked among the “Top 10 Most Difficult” onthe Nike Tour, the 6,650-yard layout is relatively forgiving. With a classy lakeside grill and a never-routine courseat moderate prices in a resort setting, this is a club that continues to set the standard in Bay Area golf.
