Let’s run a few numbers relevant tothe golf world that we know—not asspectators marveling at the exploitsof pros, but as participants, fullyengaged, with our whole selves, inthis game we love.
• More than 1,000 golf courses areopen for business in this trulyGolden State.
• About 40 tee times daily percourse.
• Go ahead, pick three of your budsand make it a foursome.
• Add up the three points above andyou’ve got 160,000 rounds of golfcapacity every day.
• Over a year, that means 58 millionrounds of available golf times.(And that’s just in California.)
Clearly, that’s a lot of golf waiting foryou to indulge. What’s that? Toobusy figuring out the ins ’n outs ofthe electronic gadgets you got forChristmas? Your golf partner’s jobjust transferred her to another state?
One of the beautiful things aboutgolf is that you can always luxuriatein a solo round when the spiritmoves you, but rare is the occasionwhen you can’t, with just the tiniestbit of social bravado, introduceyourself to join another solo playeror group.
Enough with the self-imposedisolation of computers and smartphones! By far the smartest thing todo in this world is to enjoy otherpeople. Good for your head, yourheart, and maybe even yourbusiness.
So go on: get outside, breathe someair, extend a hand, clink a glasswhen you’re done. Expand yourcircle of friends. If you’re living in orpassing through Southern California, leave the crowds behind and settleinto Beaumont for a day’s play atTukwet Canyon Golf Club. That willtake one available tee time off thelist.
but impossible to miss in the coolmonths when snow blankets their peaksas in a postcard from Colorado.
The combination of immediate desertlandscape andnearby mountainsframe vir tual lyevery hole of thetwo championshipcourses you canchoose from here. Many weekendersplay both onconsecutive days,c o m p a r i n gscorecards andstor ies in theclubhouse aftertheir rounds. Exceedingly modest greenfees (topping out at $64 in the coolmonths, slightly higher in prime season)assist greatly in that endeavor.
Tukwet’s Champions Course is themore difficult of the two, despite itsslightly shorter (by 65 yards) distancethan its companion Legends Course. At7,377 yards from the tips (four other teeplacements can get you to 5,274) ,Champions goes up anddown after i t departsfrom the clubhouse, thenloops back beforeheading out again for alengthier back nine.Elevation changes willboth del ight andchallenge you, just asthey do the PGA Tourprofessionals who haveused the course as thestage for the ChampionsTour National QualifyingFinals, Tour Q-School,and Southern CaliforniaPGA ProfessionalChampionship.
At 7,442 yards, theLegends wi l l test theheft of your drives, butits straight-ahead, no-
gimmicks layout takes you on a tidy andmostly manageable loop around the rimof the sprawling property. A naturalcreek runs through both courses
to occasional lyc o m p l i c a t ematters, butbunkering is light at112 for the 36holes.
General Managerand PGA Pro RickPari l lo re lates the amusing tale ofa previous ownerhaving f i l led in anumber of bunkerson the right side of
both courses in an attempt tocompensate for a hitch in his swing. When the Morongo Band of MissionIndians purchased the property in 2010to complement their casino up thehighway in Cabazon, t r ibal leadersbrought Par i l lo in with a mandate(accompanied by a generous budget) toupdate the courses and amenities. Oneof his first moves was to track down
Tukwet’s f i rst super intendent, PaulMayes, and lure him back. A bunkerrevival program is thus in process, alongwith a number of other enhancementsthat build on the masterful foundationlaid down by course architects LeeSchmidt and Brian Curley.
The closing holes on both coursesserve to accentuate the count lesspositives awaiting discovery at TukwetCanyon. Eight bunkers affectionatelyknown as the “Church Pews” dot theright side of Champions No. 18. You’llalso have to avoid the water from one ofthe course’s two lakes as you navigatethe 443 yards of this par-4 gem nestledagainst the stately hilltop clubhouse.
Legends No. 18 is known as “TheView,” given its full take on Mt. SanGorgonio, the southland’s highest peakat 11,503 feet. You’ll feel like you’regaining on the mountain as younegotiate the elevation changes alongthis hole’s 382 yards, but it’s not long to
the clubhouse from here, and if you canstay to the right along the fairway andavoid a long poke beyond the green, your steadiness can reward you with abirdie to redeem whatever difficultiesyou may have endured on the journey.
Tukwet’s Stay ’n Play packagesinclude deluxe guest rooms and suitesat the Morongo Casino Resort & Spathat soar up to 24 f loors above the stunning desert-and-mountainlandscape. All the modern comforts(massage services, aromatherapy, mini-bar, European linens) offer relief from thecares of the day while helping prepareyou for the var iety of n ight l i feentertainment options available in thesmart ly appointed casino complexbelow. These include lively restaurant, lounge and nightclub attractions alongwith a bowling venue in case you’d liketo pick up on the day’s competit iveendeavors.
In addition, six carefully secluded
“oasis casitas” await the highlydiscriminating weekending golfer readyto indulge the senses in a luxuriousmaster suite with whir lpool bath, fireplace and a privateoutdoor lounging pooland shower.
Beaumont has acentennial celebrationon tap for 2012, all thebetter to hai l thepresence of a golfcourse complex thatserves as both a traveldestination and quick-hop oasis forappreciat ive in landgolfers. Combined withthe 24/7 hospital i tyafforded by its resortaccommodations, it ’sl itt le wonder that thewords “Tukwet Canyon”have become almostsynonymous with the
very best of well-rounded entertainmentoptions available to golf lovers all overthe southland and beyond.

Beautifully situated amid the rolling hills, vineyards and ancient oaks of Napa’s tranquil Pope Valley, historic AetnaSprings has been a favorite spot for golf in the wine country for more than a century. The course dates back to1891, which would make it the oldest golf facility in California. Revered for its rustic natural beauty, the AetnaSprings resort opened in 1873, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2007, Tom Doakmeticulously renovated the original Aetna Springs nine-hole golf course. Famous for working with the naturalterrain rather than rearranging it, the renowned golf course designer carefully maintained the beauty of the oldworld style course. In 2010, GolfWorld Magazine recognized Aetna Springs as the 4th best 9-hole golf course inAmerica. This challenging 6114-yard layout creates a series of ingenious challenges for the thinking golfer, whomust further contend with mature oak trees and streams on nearly every hole. The restored par-3 fourth hole is a152-yard challenge for even the most experienced golfer. Aetna Springs is a consistent surprise for new visitorslooking to golf off the region’s well-trod fairways.

California’s Gold Country never looks more green than it does at Apple Mountain Golf Resort, where toweringpine, cedar and madrone trees frame one of the picture-prettiest courses you’ll ever come across. The grandnessof the Sierra Nevada is evident at every turn of this 6,202-yard, par-70 beauty designed by Algie Pulley. Perchedlow in the Sierra range off Hwy 50 in the mountain town of Camino, Apple Mountain is neither snowbound norheat-baked, instead offering consistently gorgeous weather to complement its playability. You’ll find plenty ofshotmaking challenges, though, on holes playfully named after Gold Country icons such as “Ante Up,” “MotherLode” and “Whisky Bowl.” A 300+ yard driving range and 12,000 square feet of greens let you pitch, putt, chipand breathe as deep as you please of the mountain air. Be sure to check out the “All You Can” Special runningthrough the summer of 2012. $49 weekdays, $59 Friday, and $69 Weekends and Holidays gets you golf with acart, All-You-Can eat buffet, and warm-up balls.

The intriguing name “Beau Pre” becomes even more intriguing when attached to a golf course tucked away in aspicturesque and sparsely populated an area as Beau Pre Golf Club in McKinleyville, Humboldt County. Beau Premeans “beautiful meadow” in French, and the course fits that billing with lush fairways of pine and spruce trees, lovely ponds, and elevated tees to heighten the visual splendor. Water comes into play on nine holes and sandtraps are strategically placed. “Majestic” is the operative word for this area some 250 miles north of SanFrancisco. Redwood National Park and Six Rivers National Forest provide part of the backdrop, and the PacificOcean fills out the rest. Travelers bound for Oregon find Beau Pre a perfect stop, with daily public play, excellentin-town lodging, and plentiful other outdoors opportunities available to recreationally minded golfers.McKinleyville also hosts the World's Tallest Totem Pole-at 57,000 pounds and 160 feet high, it was carved fromone redwood tree.

Since 1970, residents and visitors have been fortunate to enjoy golf in the most beautiful part of a beautiful city atBennett Valley Golf Course in Santa Rosa. This tree-lined municipal course just minutes from downtown issurrounded by mountains that are carpeted with oaks, redwoods, and Monterey pines. Matanzas Creek meandersthrough four holes, and with no houses lining the course, it's just you and your game, which is aided mightily bywonderful course conditions. A quartet of long par-5s are reachable along Ben Harmon's 6,548-yard, par-72layout. Greens were enlarged and upgraded and bunkers were added a few of years ago, and a fabulous newclubhouse and pro shop opened in 2007. Meanwhile, players at this gateway to the Wine Country continue toenjoy one of the very best values in the golf world. If your outdoor pursuits extend beyond golf, nearby AnnadelState Park has long been a mecca for mountain bikers, equestrians, hikers and trail runners.

Yes, it’s unusual for a 9-hole course in a tiny faraway town to exert a continued hold on golfers ranging from Joe Six-Pack to Joe Montana. But then Buckingham Golf & Country Club is an unusual course. Tucked into Lake County’s Buckingham Parkarea of “metropolitan” Kelseyville (population 3,000), this country-fresh course boasts nearly year-round blue skies, a No. 3 rankingamong Northern California’s 9-hole courses by the publication On the Links, and universal acclaim for its tremendously true greens.

The par-60 layout ranges from 106 to 289 yards, with 12 par-3s andthe balance par-4s. The course plays narrow and short enough to forgive beginning golfers, while well-placedbunkers and the ever-present creek can require even accomplished golfers to put on their game face. Deep Cliff’swalking feature adds to your enjoyment as you step far away from the traffic and hassles of everyday life at thisgolf oasis. Now offering a limited supply of riding carts.

The Legends Course at Diablo Grande Golf and Country Club takes its name partly from the two golfing legendswhose sole design collaboration occurred here. Jack Nicklaus and Gene Sarazen created a par-72 course on theedge of the Bay Area that befits the classic elegance so reflected in their own approach to the game. Now underthe management of Troon Golf along with its sister course, “The Ranch,” Legends is rimmed by rolling hillsides, vineyards, creeks and canyons. Its location in Patterson means easy access from the entire East Bay and SanFrancisco, while offering all the features of a true getaway. The challenge of traditional Nicklaus bunkering issoftened by wide fairways, though smallish greens demand focus and touch. Five tee placements put you 4905 to7112 yards from the cup, with a long of 547 yards greeting you at No. 2. Recipient of numerous accolades sinceits 1998 debut, Legends, well deserves its already classic reputation in Bay Area golf.

Opened in 1996, the Ranch Course was the first of the two sterling Diablo Grande courses to come on line in thespacious setting of Patterson, at the northern tip of the Central Valley. Designed by the internationally renownedDenis Griffiths (Fairmount at St. Andrews, among many others), “The Ranch” capitalizes on rolling terrain, anatural creek, and abundant other water features to make each round an exercise in graceful, ever-challenginggolf. The 7,243-yard, par-72 layout (four other tee placements go down to 5,112 yards) requires some heftydriving, most dramatically on the 649-yard No. 12 signature hole that will ask for everything you have and pay offhandsomely if you can give it. Modest rates include cart and range balls. Dramatic elevation changes, abundantoak trees and surrounding vineyards add spice and visual variety to this course, which has earned spots on “TopNorthern California Courses” lists in Golf Today, among other honors.

The $3 million renovation includes a completely new drainagesystem, forty-five new bunkers, four tee placements, and a rolling topography that creates unique visual interestand requires a thinking person’s approach to the game. What hasn’t changed is the preponderance of redwoodtrees that you can feast on throughout the course, along with the picturesque mountain backdrop that has alwaysframed the region’s vineyards and valleys. Just a minute off Highway 101 and immediately next door to theresort-style DoubleTree Hotel, Foxtail North offers a premium golf opportunity at public course prices. This is golf as you’ve never known it. The almost other-worldly beauty of Death Valley presents the starkestpossible contrast to the greenery of Furnace Creek Golf Course and accompanying Resort, right in the heart ofthis 3.3 million acre national park. As “the world’s lowest elevation golf course” (214 feet below sea level),Furnace Creek presents an environment that for sheer drama has few peers. The light alone goes through everyshade of intensity, and as the weather cools during prime golf season from fall through spring, the 18-hole, par-70 course reveals its full magnificence. (Summer golf tends to be for very early birds only.) Solid golfing skills arerequired on the deceptively short 6,236-yard layout. The prime handicap hole is No. 6, a 440-yard stretch overwater and into a prevailing wind, with a large Tamarisk tree guarding the left side of the green. Furnace Creekcries out for stay-and-play, of course, and the Inn (seasonal) and Ranch both offer overnight packages. Definitelyput this one on your Bucket List!

The purity of a true links course in the heart of the Bay Area has been exerting a powerful draw upon the region’sgolfers since Oakland’s Metropolitan Golf Links opened in April 2003. Managed by Petaluma-based CourseCoInc., this public course features tremendous expansiveness as it opens to vistas of the Bay Bridge, San Francisco, the Oakland Hills and the Peninsula. Fred Bliss and Johnny Miller created a masterful rhythm acrossMetropolitan’s 7,015 yards, with golfers challenged to find their own groove amidst the prevailing winds, largelyopen and rolling fairways, and greens that offer just enough variation and surprise to keep your putting game on full alert. Mostly treeless and true, the course puts a premium on systematic shaping of your shots from left to right, up and down. An estuary runs prominently through six holes, with two lakes and a pond also addingwater interest. Affordable rates top off the allure of this Golf Digest’s, 2006, 4-1/2 star “Best Places to Play” inBay Area golf.

Here along the dramatic coastline of the Monterey Peninsula, you'll enjoy wide-ranging views highlighting geography (Point Pinos, Crespi Pond), wildlife (Pacific Blacktail deer, seals, sealions, otters, pelicans, and an annual migration of Monarch Butterflies), and enchanting human constructions likethe Point Pinos Lighthouse (the longest continuously operating lighthouse—since 1855—in California). The frontnine was designed by Chandler Egan in 1932 to guide players through the forested areas of Pacific Grove. In1960, Jack Neville, the original designer of the Pebble Beach Golf Links, added to the mystique with a back ninelaid out in true links style, traversing dunesland as it finds its way to the sea. With small greens and few bunkers,Pacific Grove offers an unpretentious golfing challenge in an area renowned the world over as a feast for the eyesand a tonic for the soul.

Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park has a wide following among golfers who revel in the challenges posed bywater hazards on 16 of the 18 holes. Bordering on the Napa River wetlands, the course was designed by BobBaldock and Jack Fleming in 1967 as a partially treelined obstacle tour and the rest wide open links style. Pinetrees rim the course, slowly being replaced by native redwoods and other indigenous varieties. The signature 8thhole is described as a “reachable” par-5, though water left, right and front sometimes makes the “reach” seemmore like a frantic grasp. Napa has served as a qualifier for the U.S. Open and the Anheuser-Busch tourney in thepast. Significant enhancements have been made on the course in the past three years, including new cart paths, tees and bunkers. In addition, the golf shop and clubhouse were recently remodeled, providing a wonderful newatmosphere in the restaurant, Jack’s Bar & Grill. Featuring a menu of specialty sandwiches and distinct salads,Jack’s is an ideal venue for a meal before or after your round.

Aficionados of traditional golf (at traditional prices) will find a highly agreeable experience awaiting them atSkywest Golf Course in Hayward. Bob Baldock designed this par-72 municipal course along classic lines when itdebuted in 1964. Tree-lined fairways can cause the usual kinds of trouble for errant tee shots, though largegreens tend to play true. The par-3s all play long at 140-200 yards, and two lakes insist that you pay themattention on the front and back nines. The three former tee placements (6,789 yards from the back) were recentlyaugmented by a new 5,406, par-73 option from the front. The back 9’s bent grass greens have just been rebuiltto complement the dramatic 6,000 square foot clubhouse that opened in 2005. Classic” golf can be defined in many ways, but if your notion includes a landscape uncluttered by surroundinghomes, with mountains in almost every direction, under huge skies, on a course whose history includes five PGANike Tour events, then Windsor Golf Club is the perfect example. Windsor's 1989 debut helped transform itsnamesake Sonoma County town from a sleepy rural hamlet into a classy destination that includes an inviting newdowntown area built from scratch. An extensive fairway sanding program has now made it a 12-month course, allthe better to accommodate the 12-month wine tasting that golfers can pursue almost immediately outside thecourse boundaries. Although holes 2 and 7 were both consistently ranked among the “Top 10 Most Difficult” onthe Nike Tour, the 6,650-yard layout is relatively forgiving. With a classy lakeside grill and a never-routine courseat moderate prices in a resort setting, this is a club that continues to set the standard in Bay Area golf.
