GAME 1 | AUG. 30, 2018 | @ CHATTANOOGA

#WINGSUP 3

NEW ERA BEGINS: Thursday’s game marks the first game for Dewayne Alexander as the head coach of the Tennessee Tech football team. Alexander is in his fourth tenure with the Golden Eagles, serving as a GA running backs coach in 1997-98, defensive line coach in 2002-03, assistant head coach and offensive line coach from 2013-15 and was the acting head coach after Watson Brown resigned in 2015. Following the Marcus Satterfield’s run in 2016 and 2017, Alexander became the Golden Eagles’ 12th head football coach on Dec. 22, 2017.

EVERY GAME IS HOMECOMING: With the return of Dewayne Alexander as Tech’s head coach, the Golden Ea-gles also have five additional coaches who either played or coached at Tennessee Tech -- associate head coach/tight ends coach Doug Malone, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Tre Lamb, linebackers coach Bruce Hatfield, outside linebackers coach/special teams coordinator Taylor Hennigan (son of Tech football legend Mike Hennigan) and defensive line coach Sam Williamson. Tech’s Director of Football Operations and Leadership Development Chip Pugh was also the former Director of Athletic Development, while Academics Coordinator Cody Matthews is a former Golden Eagle player.

TENNESSEE TECH FOOTBALL

#WINGSUP4

YOUNG GUN: Bailey Fisher currently holds the top spot at quarterback, coming into the game as a true fresh-man. He graduated early after finishing his campaign at Rabun County (Ga.) and enrolled into Tech in January, going through spring practice with the Golden Eagles. He has shown plenty of promise with the Tech offense and could be a valuable weapon.

At Rabun County as a senior, he passed for 3,341 yards with 43 touchdowns, while also rushing for 1,283 yards. In his prep career, he threw for 9,383 yards and 113 touchdowns, while rushing for 3,075 yards and 57 more scores.

SWITCHING SIDES: Two major names from the Tennessee Tech defense will see action on the offensive side of the ball in 2018 as Josh Cunningham and Deven Sullivan return to offensive skill positions. Cunningham played as a cornerback in 2017, while Sullivan was in the linebacker corps to bolster their ranks after Josh Poplar had to miss the season.

Sullivan finished 2017 with 51 total tackles, including eight for-loss. He also recovered a fumble against Tennessee State. His season high was 10 tackles against Western Illinois. He was signed under then-head coach Watson Brown to play running back before Marcus Satterfield and his staff moved him to defense.

Cunningham finished 2017 with 53 tackles, six pass break-ups, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick. He recorded 11 tackles against Tennessee State. He spent 2016 as a wide receiver in Satterfield’s first season at Tech, catching 17 passes for 178 yards.

EMPTY NEST: The biggest hole to fill for Tech on offense is wide receiver Dontez Byrd, who wrapped up his eli-gibility and is currently with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. The first Golden Eagle to ever surpass the 1,000 receiving yard plateau in a season, Byrd leaves some pretty big shoes to fill.

Tech did bring in a graduate transfer and a few freshmen who could grow into the role, however. Melvin Holland Jr. joins the Golden Eagles from Minnesota, while Brad Clark, Jeremiah Edwards and Cam Singletary have all shown impressive moves in camp. With those players joining thr returning core of Cunningham, R.D. Ford, Seth Huner and Hunter Coleman, there could be some impressive days ahead for the Tech receivers.

GROUND GAME: Tech saw running back Yeedee Thaenrat transfer to Towson, but the Golden Eagles’ top runner from a season ago, Andrew Goldsmith, is back, ready to lead Tech on the running attack. Goldsmith finished 2017 with 589 yards and three touchdowns on 116 carries, while also catching 15 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown. He rushed for a career-high 121 yards against Eastern Illinois. Following Goldsmith on the charts is senior Sullivan, freshman David Gist -- a Cookeville product, and D.J. Worthy.

UP FRONT: While there are a few familiar faces on the Tech offensive line, it’s pretty much an entirely different look for the Golden Eagle front five. Under the direction of Jake Thornton, who spent last season with the University of Alabama as a graduate assistant, the offensive line has been shaken up and reshaped. Providing protection at center is Daly Cull, who spent a year as a preferred walk-on at Memphis, then transferred to Tech, rejoining his high school head coach -- former Hendersonville High skipper Bruce Hatfield, who is currently coaching the Tech linebackers. Norman Hand, Mike Rhoades, Eric Kareem and Kurt Huff provide the first-line protection, while Schaefer Almoyan, Manny Avina, Riley Bodine, Philipp Tolksdorf and Mackenan Thompson provide back-up.

POWER PACK: Tech returns four tight ends who could prove to be gamechangers for the Golden Eagle offense. Mitchell McClurg, an Appalachian State transfer, is in his second full season with Tech, and could see a breakout season. Tavin Kilpatrick, a sophomore from Greenback, had a great freshman season, and they’ll be assisted with veteran leadership from senior Alex Carling and junior Clint Zierke. The foursome provides plenty of versa-tility or whichever package the offense sets up in.

OVERSEEING THE OFFENSE: Tech’s offensive coordinator should have a familiar name to those who have followed the Golden Eagles -- Tre Lamb, who was the quarterback for the Golden Eagles’ OVC Championship team in 2011. He was most recently at Mercer before coming home to Cookeville.

#WINGSUP 5

WELCOME BACK: Redshirt junior linebacker Josh Poplar has come a long way in just over a year. Just before the start of the 2017 fall camp, Poplar was diagnosed with a stroke following the team’s fitness test and a hole in his heart discovered. Poplar continued to work with the team, even though he was unable to play in the 2017 campaign. An all-Ohio Valley Conference second-team selection in 2016, it was hard to keep Tech’s leading tackler down, even if he was kept to the sidelines, serving as a student assistant.

Now Poplar is cleared to play and is back in old form, serving notice to opposing defenses that he’s back and ready to get to work. He’s joined by a fairly deep Tech linebacker corps, including Aderick Moore, who led the Golden Eagles in tackling in 2017, and Jake Warwick, who returns to the defense after a year as a fullback. Warwick is the grandson of famed Golden Eagle linebacker Lonnie Warwick, who later became a member of the legendary Minnesota Vikings’ Purple People Eaters defensive unit.

BRINGING THE HOUSE: It will be hard for opposing offenses not to see senior defensive end Tim Collins out on the field. With his imposing 6-5, 250-pound stature, Collins is the tallest starter on the Tech defense. He’s also known to make some noise as he disrupts the offense. A preseason all-Ohio Valley Conference selection, Collins looks to build on his 2017 campaign, where he finished the year with 51 tackles, including five for-loss for six yards, six QB hurries, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

NICKEL-PLATED: Tech is switching to the 4-2-5 defense this season from the 4-3 run in the past couple of seasons. With the switch, Eriq Fadhunsi and Branson Kramm will slightly shift duties as they take on the nickel position on the field. Fadahunsi, a Temple transfer, has been a reliable defensive back for the Golden Eagles and could make some noise in the adopted role.

EYES ON THE BALL: Providing deep support as a free safety, Deontay Wilson proved to be one of Tech’s top pass defenders in 2017, making 64 tackles, while picking off a pass and breaking up two. He also recovered a fumble for 13 yards. During the 2017 season, he had 12 tackles against Western Illinois, his career-high, and 10 against Austin Peay. There is some upperclassman leadership in the secondary with senior A.J. Flemister at left corner, junior Shannon Fayne at strong safety and junior Dami Adekunjo at right corner.

But following that first line, it’s a young, but talented group: Brian Thompson, a freshman at left corner, picked off eight passes for 186 yards as a senior at East Nashville Magnet last season, Aidan Raines at strong safety was a fantastic receiver at Mt. Juliet, and Seth Carlisle was a tremendous quarterback and defensive back at Macon County, picking off two passes and returning one for a touchdown.

UP FRONT: On the front four on Tech’s defensive line, there’s not a whole lot different. In addition to Collins at DE, Anthony Akers is at defensive tackle, Xavier Schlueter starts at nose, while Chris McElderry is taking on what the Tech staff is labeling the Five. The quartet is three seniors and one junior, giving Tech some valuable experience on the front lines.

Backing up Collins at DE is freshman Sam Oldham, a prized prospect from Cookeville, who is also the son of Ten-nessee Tech president Dr. Phil Oldham. His work ethic and skills impressed the staff enough to earn the second spot on the depth chart. Meanwhile, there is experience back on the relief spots on the defensive line with junior Taylor Underwood at DT, sophomore Jale’n Gladney at nose and redshirt junior Andrew Swicegood at Five.

OVERSEEING THE DEFENSE: When Dewayne Alexander took over the Golden Eagles, he knew exactly who he wanted to lead Tech’s defense as he brought in Donnie Suber as defensive coordinator. A graduate from Georgia Southern, Suber was the defensive coordinator at Cumberland, then took over as the head coach once Alexander left to become the offensive line coach for Watson Brown at Tech. After Brown’s retirement in 2015, Alexander went back to Cumberland to assist for Suber, before taking a position at East Tennessee State.

PUTTING ON THE POINTS: Nick Madonia continues to be the kicker for the Golden Eagles, and he certainly has the numbers to back up why. A program-record 57-yarder in the books, nearly perfect on PATs and solid on field goals. He finished 2017 with a 21-for-21 mark on point-after attempts, while he was 9-for-14 on field goals. He was 1-for-1 from under 30, 6-for-7 from 30-to-39, 1-for-5 from 40-to-49, and 1-for-1 from beyond 50. His longest last season was 51 at Eastern Illinois.

Madonia has made 18 of his 25 field goals in his career, an accuracy mark of 72.0 percent. John Arnold has the best percentage, hitting 20 of his 27 (74.1). David Collett has the career record for field goals made with 49.

KICK OFF: Haidar Zaidan returns as Tech’s kickoff specialist. Last season, he had 34 kickoffs for a total of 2,020 yards, averaging 59.4 yards. He had 16 touchbacks and two sail out of bounds.

COMING TO AMERICA: The atest addition to the Golden Eagles’ special teams is Luke Maynard, a rugby-style punter from Australia. Signing with the Golden Eagles just under two weeks ago, Maynard has already started to show a lot of promise for Tech and opening up some options on the special teams. He came through the Prokick Australia program, which has instructed five consecutive Ray Guy Award winners and 12 All-Americans. The program’s alums include former Eastern Kentucky punter Keith Wrzuszczak, who was the top punter in the OVC in recent years.

TAKING IT BACK: On the depth chart for returners are running back Andrew Goldsmith and receiver Jeremiah Edwards. The two have had a lot of speed in camp and could provide some highlight reel quality returns for the Golden Eagles. Goldsmith returned four kicks last year for 100 yards, the longest at 31 yards. Edwards, a fresh-man from Hillsboro, Tenn., has had impressive speed and good hands as he looks to make his mark.

OFF THE FIELD

WILMORE GETS THE TEDDY: Former Golden Eagle linebacker Barry “Butch” Wilmore was named the recipient of the NCAA’s highest honor -- the Theodore Roosevelt Award -- in January. Wilmore played football from 1982 to 1985 at Tech. He then went on to become a decorated combat pilot in the Navy, then went on to become an astronaut, commanding the space shuttle Atlantis and served on missions to the International Space Station. Wilmore is also a member of the Tennessee Tech Sports Hall of Fame. He is the first former Tech and Ohio Valley Conference student-athlete to receive the award.

HELPING BUILD THE WALL: During the spring, the Tennessee Tech football team helped erect the visiting Vietnam Wall memorial -- “The Wall That Heals.” Tech coaches and players helped put together the traveling exhibit as people from all over the region visited the scale replica of the Vietnam War Memorial wall standing in Washington, D.C.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. --Tennessee Tech closed out the home portfolio of its 2014 schedule with Senior Day Saturday, falling to FCS No. 9 Chattanooga, 38-17, as the Mocs (8-3) won their fifth consecutive game. It was also Military and Public Safety Appreciation Day, as well as Scout Day.

The Golden Eagles (4-7) will put the wraps on the season next week with an Ohio Valley Conference finale at Austin Peay. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.

Tech battled early, pulling to within 7-3 on a John Arnold field goal early in the second quarter, and then used a 64-yard sprint by junior Ladarius Vanlier for a touchdown seven minutes later to close to within 14-10.

But the Mocs drove 60 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-10, and a minute later recovered a fumble following a sack at the TTU 22, and converted that turnover into another touchdown for a sudden 28-10 advantage heading into halftime.

The Chattanooga lead grew to 31-10 in the third quarter, and 38-10 on a short drive following Tech’s only other turnover.

The Golden Eagles put together the final scoring drive of the afternoon as Jared Davis rammed in from the one. It was his 42-yard completion to Cody Matthews that set up the score.

That catch gave Matthews 100 receptions for his Tech career.

The Mocs rolled up 457 yards of offense, gaining 234 through the air and 223 on the ground. Tech managed just 171 total yards, with 96 rushing and 75 through the air.

Chattanooga quarterback Jacob Huesman, the son of Moc head coach Russ Huesman, was the leading rusher with 89 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries. He also completed 21 of 27 passes for 234 yards and four more touchdowns. The Mocs also got 76 yards on 22 carries from Keon Williams.

Tech was led by Vanlier’s 81 yards on seven carries. Matthews finished with two catches for 50 yards.

Defensively, several Golden Eagles piled up big numbers on the tackle charts, topped by senior Cory Webber’s career-best 17 stops. Austin Tallant added 12 tackles and forced a fumble, while Jay Rudwall finished with 10 tackles and two tackles-for-loss. Marty Jones, the team’s leading tacklers this season, had nine tackles in the first half before leaving the contest with an injury.

The game was the final home appearance for 16 Golden Eagle seniors: DaJuan Brown, Neil Gannaway, James Huguely, Marty Jones, Cody Matthews, Tevin McDermott, Midoho Okpokowuruk, Patrick Prewitt, Randall Reeves, Zach Sharp, Matthew Smith, Conor Sparkman, Darian Stone, Austin Tallant, Ben Viaene, and Cory Webber.

#WINGSUP 9

When one has been around Tennessee Tech as long as Dewayne Alexander has been, it begins to feel like home.

Alexander went to school at Tech, played football at Tech, coached as an assistant coach for the Golden Eagles and was even the acting head coach after Watson Brown stepped down following the 2015 season.

While he didn’t follow in Brown’s shoes then, that didn’t deter Alexander.

After all, Tennessee Tech is home for him.

On Dec. 22, 2017, as he was announced as the Golden Eagle football team’s 12th all-time head coach and the welcome mat was rolled out for Alexander, he’s returned to a place that is near and dear to him and is determined to lead the Golden Eagles to championships.

“I’m honored,” Alexander said. “I feel very blessed. It’s exciting and I’m just so humbled by the whole thing. I couldn’t be more appreciative of (university president) Dr. (Phil) Oldham and (Tech director of athletics) Mark Wilson giving me the opportunity.”

There is hardly any doubt in the fact that Dewayne Alexander is the epitome of a Tech guy.

“It is an excellent fit,” Wilson said. “He loves Tennessee Tech. He truly bleeds purple and gold. He is the head coach to build a winning program here, can build a championship-level program, but do everything right with a commitment to academic excellence, a commitment to developing our football student-athletes as a whole person and provide great service to our community.”

But while he hardly had enough time to warm up the head coach’s chair two years ago, the opportunity to take the reins this time around is certainly a welcome one.

“I hadn’t been there long enough,” Alexander laughed. “It feels good. I’m just anxious to get started, ready to get started. I’m trying to get in touch with all of our players – hopefully some of them will be at the press conference -- but I want to talk to them, talk to their families, put one foot in front of the other and take Tennessee Tech football where I know it can go.”

With the research into where the program stands, as well as his past experience at Tech, for Alexander to say he’s excited may be an understatement.

“I’m a product of Tennessee Tech,” he said. “I have two degrees from Tech. I’m a former player. The one thing that has always made Tennessee Tech special is the people. It’s an amazing group, the continuity is special, and it’s something we want to do with the football team. We need very good staff continuity, we need enthusiasm and inject it into the program and I think we’re ready to do that.

“But I think the thing that impressed me the most in this whole process was the number of people who have just strong feelings for Tennessee Tech and I have always felt that it is the

people that make Tech special. I’ve been associated with Tech since 1983 in some form or fashion on and off, but the people have always made Tech what it is.”

It’s that family atmosphere that’s really made it hard for Alexander to stay away.

“Absolutely,” Alexander said. “From the top to the bottom in the athletic administration, that is definitely true. I know all of those people very well, they’re people I’ve worked with in the past and I really feel comfortable being around them. During the interview process, it was almost like I’ve never left. It’s very good to be a part of that.

“And Tech and Cookeville have been a great place for my family. I graduated from Tech, my son (Hayden) is in graduate school here, my daughter Kate was born at Cookeville Regional back in 2000. It’s home. It’s always had a family atmosphere and been a second home for me and my family.”

One of the biggest positives for Alexander is his many connections in football, not just from his roots in the Upper Cumberland, but throughout the country.

“He has great connections throughout the state of Tennessee and the southeast in recruiting,” Wilson said. “He’s been a high school coach, a collegiate head coach, a collegiate assistant coach. He has tremendous connections that will help us in recruiting, and I know the staff that he’s working to put together will be a great staff, a strong staff that will do great things as they build a championship football program together here at Tennessee Tech.”

Alexander added, “I’ve been blessed with the time I’ve spent in Cookeville and the Upper Cumberland. From coaching the Bees at Upperman High School, coaching at Jackson County High School, I’m very proud of that, proud of spending time in those communities and glad to still have a lot of friends and connections and familiar faces that I know and keep in touch with. It’s just going to be so exciting getting back to living in this area full-time. I just can’t wait to get here.”

Of course, he’s no stranger to being the head coach, putting together a successful tenure at Cumberland University, and that experience brings quite a bit to the table.

“It brings a lot, because I have been a head coach on both the high school and college levels,” Alexander said. “When I took over at Cumberland, the program was going through some ad-versity. I was their third head coach in four years and they had some struggles. I know what that looks like to rebuild football programs – I did it at Wilson Central High School as the head coach and I was able to do it at Cumberland University and get the program going in the right direction.

“I’ve been there and done that when it comes to those kinds of situations. Here at Tennessee Tech, we have a tremendous amount of resources. We have a great community, a great university to recruit to and I feel like we’re going to be able to get this program moving in the right direction real, real soon.”

And the burning question on most fans’ minds is probably this:

what will it take to make Tech a winning program?

“By recruiting and stabilizing our current roster,” Alexan-der said. “We have to recruit. We are going to go all in on recruiting. We’re going to hire a staff of recruiters. To me, we’ve got a great area to recruit to. We host the TSSAA state championship games. That’s what it’s going to take – recruit-ing and doing things right in our program, whether it’s in the weight room, on the field, off the field. We’re going to hire good coaches who will do right by our players and work extremely hard. I’m a big believer that if we’re doing things the right way on and off the field, the wins will take care of themselves. They always have wherever I’ve been.”

On the side of Tucker Stadium, there’s the large banner that reads ‘Champions are made here.’ Alexander is definitely believer in that.

“There is so much truth in that,” Alexander said. “What an awesome thing it is for us to host the TSSAA state champi-onships. I look back at the 2011 Tech team who won the OVC championship and went to the FCS playoffs, and, in that same year, won the academic award in the OVC. That’s what Tennes-see Tech is all about. That’s what being a student-athlete at Tennessee Tech is all about. It’s being very competitive in the classroom and playing championship-caliber football. That’s what we’re going to do.”

It’s hard to question Alexander’s experience – a career that has spanned nearly 30 years.

Alexander returns to Tech following a season as the offensive line coach for East Tennessee State, helping the Buccaneers continue their rebuilding phase after the Johnson City school restarted its football program. Among his players were All-Southern Conference offensive lineman Alex Rios.

A 1989 graduate of Tech with a bachelor’s degree in political science, followed by a master’s in educational leadership in 1998, Alexander lettered for three seasons with the Golden Eagles from 1985 to 1987.

Following his graduation, he became an assistant coach at his prep alma mater, Hendersonville (Tenn.) High, between 1989 and 1996. He then became the head coach, assistant principal and athletic director at Jackson County (Tenn.) High from 1996 to 1997, leading the Blue Devils to a playoff berth.

From 1997 to 1998, Alexander returned to Tech as a graduate assistant, overseeing running backs. Then, from 1998 to 2001, he moved just down the road to nearby Baxter as he became the head coach, assistant principal and athletic director at Upperman High (Tenn.)

From 2001 to 2002, Alexander then moved to Gallatin as an offensive coordinator, leading the Green Wave to a 10-3 record and an appearance in the TSSAA state quarterfinals.

The 2002 season saw a return to Cookeville as he became the Golden Eagles’ defensive line coach, where he oversaw D.J. Bleisath, who was an All-OVC selection, a Buck Buchanan Award finalist, and later a Tech Sports Hall of Famer.

From 2003 to 2005, Alexander took over the reins of a Wilson Central (Tenn.) team that had gone 0-20 in its previous two seasons. By his second season, the Wildcats had a winning record. By his third, WCHS was 10-2 with the school’s first-ev-er playoff win and a fifth place ranking in the final Associated Press Tennessee prep poll.

In January 2006, Alexander became the head coach at Cumberland University. The NAIA program had only won four games in the previous three years and he was able to lead the team to its first conference championship in 61 years as the then-Bulldogs (the team has since rebranded as the Phoenix) won the Mid-South Conference championship.

While at Cumberland, he was named the American Football Coaches Association’s NAIA Region 1 Coach of the Year (2010) and the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s Coach of the Year (2011). That same season, CU ranked 14th nationally, its highest mark in 13 seasons. Between the span of 2010 and 2012, the Bulldogs won 23 games, the best stretch in the program’s then-76-year history. During that time, the team was ranked three straight years in the NAIA Top 25 for the first time.

In 2012, Cumberland led the nation with 16 NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athletes (with a 3.5 grade point average or better) and led the MSC with 31 conference scholar-athletes (3.25 GPA or better).

During his tenure at Cumberland, he recruited 44 first-team all-conference players, three first-team all-Americans, five national players of the week and the 2012 MSC Offensive Player of the Year in Lemeco Miller.

In 2013, Alexander returned to Tech, joining head coach Wat-son Brown’s staff as an assistant head coach and offensive line coach, a role he held until December 2015 as he became

the acting head coach after Brown’s retirement and oversaw the program until Marcus Satterfield was hired in January 2016.

But during Alexander’s next tenure with the Golden Eagles, he coached two all-OVC offensive linemen in Wesley Sherrill and Charles Mouton. He also oversaw recruiting efforts in the Upper Cumberland, Middle Tennessee, Georgia and Southern California.

After Satterfield’s hiring, Alexander returned for one season at Cumberland as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks and running backs coach for the Phoenix. He followed that up with his latest stop at East Tennessee State.

Alexander has also been the NAIA representative on the American Football Coaches Association’s Ethics Committee (2010-2013), a member of the AFCA All-American Committee (2012), a conference rater for the NAIA Coaches’ Poll (2012), the head coach for the East team in the 2010 NAIA All-Star Game, and serves on the board of directors for the Nashville, Tenn., chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame from 2008 to the present.

Alexander is joined in Cookeville with his wife, Angela, and they have four children – Hayden (a MBA student at Tech), Kate and twin sons Ross and John.
