President’s Report By Ray Lamoureux #9

It is that time of year when elections for the board. There are two positions

up for election to the board. Don Webb is retiring after nine years on the board and

Dave Merriam is also retiring after his one term. I would like to thank Don Webb for

his long service on the board and Dave Merriam for their time and effort they put

into running Golden Acres to make it a better community. There are three people that

submitted their intent to run to Progressive Management for the election on February

13th at 10:00. They are Paula Bunevith, Jerry Janes and Ron Short. You should have

received your ballot by this newsletter if you have not you can get one at the office

from Karin. Meet the candidates will be held after coffee on February 6th at 10:00.

Please vote for the candidates of your choice.

The board is going around for inspections as of this writing. We have a new system this year and will be

leaving a copy of the findings at each unit that a board member and a resident inspect. The letters took a long

time to get delivered in past years and we hoped this would speed up the process. You will know right away if

there is a problem or if your unit passed the inspection. Please look for the slip in your park mail box.

We are still getting complaints in the office about speed in the park and stop signs not being

observed. We have small streets in the park and a lot of pedestrians walking and riding bikes night and day.

The board members noticed when in the office that the stop sign coming into the park most cars don’t stop.

The sales have been very brisk this month and most of the sale is done before the intent to sell is filed in

the office. Karin has been very busy with people asking to purchase and the sales already going thru the system.

As of this writing we have only two units up for sale currently.

The board talked about replacing the palm trees we lost during the hurricane last year and some of the

dead ones we have removed. We put it off till this years voted to add ten palms to the park. The locations of the

new palms are still being looked at as of this newsletter.

The pool heater went and a new one was installed. The new one seems to be doing a good job no

complaints about pool temperature.

Greetings from the Office By Karin Desmone #1

The 2019-2020 Phone Directory will be going to the printer shortly. I have a form in the office that

must be filled out if you want to make any changes from last year’s directory. You can list up to two phone

numbers or one email address and one phone number. NO form is required if you are not making any changes.

Therefore, this year’s directory will have the same phone number as in last year’s. Please submit all changes to

the office by March 7th.

New directories will be delivered to each unit by April 1st. If you are not in the park when the new

directories are delivered, I will be mailing them in the US mail to your away address that is on file in the office.

From the Editor’s Desk By Sue Bailey #188 [email protected]

Happy Valentine's Day!

Our busy social life here at Golden Acres continues in February. The

calendar is really chocked full of things to do this month, including blood

pressure clinic, Super Bowl, 50th anniversary party, Valentine's Day Dance,

pancake breakfast, progressive cards, Can/Am dinner and show, and a shuffle for

Mel & Skip. Plus, our weekly repeats for almost every day of the week. It

sounds like a great time for all. If you haven't participated in the past, please do.

I'm sure you will enjoy it!

As February progresses, here are some important days to remember:

February 1st is National Wear Red Day dedicated to raising awareness

about heart disease.

February 2nd, Groundhog's Day is a popular observance centering on the groundhog, Punxsutawney

Phil, living at Gobbler's Knob (near Punxsutawney, PA) coming out of his home to predict the weather. If he

sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter, if not, spring is just around the corner.

February 3rd is Super Bowl Sunday. You can watch the game with friends on the big TV screen in the

Clubhouse from 5:30-10:30pm. Bring your own beverage, snacks, and chair (unless you don’t mind sitting in a

clubhouse folding chair for the game).

February 14th is observed as Valentine's Day, an occasion to celebrate love and friendship.

February 15th since 1996 was officially declared National Flag of Canada Day. To this day, Canada’s

red and white maple leaf flag is one of the most recognizable flags in the world. The flag’s main symbol, the red

maple leaf, has since become a symbol of Canadian pride and national identity.

February 18h is a National Holiday in the United States named President's Day to honor the life and

work of George Washington, the first president. Some states consolidate Washington and Lincoln's birthday on

this day. In Canada, it is Family Day. Originally created to give people time to spend with their families.

Activities include skating, playing hockey, snowboarding/skiing, and going to various winter festivals. The best

things about Family Day are beaver tails and pancakes with maple syrup.

Until next time,

May God bless and keep you well and safe…

Recreation Report By Mark Johnson #174

We ended the 2018 activities calendar with some very successful events. The Christmas Potluck Dinner,

hosted by the Rec Committee, was attended by 80 people. The event was highlighted by great food and the

decorating of our human trees. Thanks to Staicy Boyd, #46 (Naughty Pine), Gil Callingham, #159 (All Bark and

No Bite), and John Ayles, #74 (Where's Your Aspen?) for their great imitations of the symbolic tree of the

Christmas season. Congratulations goes out to Kathy Merriam, #50 for winning the ugly Christmas Sweater

contest.

Winners of this year's coach decorating contest were:

1st place - Cindy Hubbard, #114

2nd place - David and Mildred Todd, #2

3rd place - Ed and Donna Richtmyer, #66.

It was a close contest and thanks to everyone in the park who participated.

We also wish to acknowledge all who helped with the placement of the luminaries throughout the park

for Christmas. They were beautiful.

We said goodbye to 2018 and brought in the New Year in style. Thanks to Ron and Nancy Short, #44,

for a great job in hosting the New Year Eve's dance. A crowd in excess of 100 people rocked the night away to

the tremendous sound and entertainment provided by the Boomer Band.

None of these events would be possible without the cooperation and the spirit of volunteerism here at

Golden Acres. We can't thank all of you enough, who stepped forward, with your commitment of time, talent,

and energy.

Please check your calendars to participate in all the extra activities offered.

Looking forward to an exciting 2019 - Happy New Year!

Recreation Activities at a Glance By Sue Bailey

If you want to check out the Recreation Activities and you aren’t in the Clubhouse (where it is posted on

the Recreation Bulletin Board), you can go to our website: http://www.goldenacresfl.com/ . Click on Activities

and all activities are listed along with the dates.

Food Drive By Nancy Baker #103

This season Jim and Debra Whitney #176 will be collecting and delivering the goods to the Dunedin

Cares food bank. Many thanks to them for filling in for me. Don’t forget to pick up your jellies and jams for the

February collection because, once again, there was a lot of peanut butter on the shelf but no jelly!!

Then at the end of March and April, we’ll have our “clean-out-the-cupboards” collection the last week

in each month.

Again, thanks to all of you and thanks, especially, to Jim and Debra Whitney for all their help!

Toy Drive By Nancy Baker #103

Mea culpa! In my haste to report the Toy Drive information I forgot to mention the generous assistance

of Donna and Ed Richtmyer #66 who delivered our gifts for the military families. Many thanks to them and to

all those who donated toys. We have a wonderfully generous community here!

January Potluck By Mark Johnson #174

The Golden Acres clubhouse was filled to near capacity, to enjoy a magical evening of great food, great

conversation, and great entertainment, for our January potluck dinner. 126 wonderful residents contributed their

time, talent, and efforts, to make the night a true success.

The evening was highlighted by the comical magic act of Hugh Turley. He was well received as he

earned a well-deserved standing ovation following his performance.

The event was hosted by Lin and Mark Johnson, who wish to extend a huge thank you, in our sincere

appreciation to all of you who assisted with set up, clean up, and planning, for this memorable potluck. The

display of teamwork of the Golden Acres residents certainly benefited us all.

AquaFit By Nancy Baker #103 / Marlene Scott #128

This season, the AquaFit class will be splishing and splashing on Monday and Wednesday mornings at

10:30 am, weather permitting. My sincere appreciation to Marlene for taking on the extra in my absence. I

know how hard it is to handle that rowdy bunch (LOL) but Marlene is tough. I know she can tame them! Have

fun and splash on!

As you can see from this photo, our former AquaFit instructor was so full of excitement and exuberance that we

sent her packing back up north. Thank goodness we have found another excellent instructor in Marlene.

and a lot of fun.

The following were the winners:

HOLE #4 Tom McGrory

HOLE #7 Ken Hultgen

HOLE #18 Ron Short

Putting Contest winner: Ed Richtmyer (A great putt)

Team Winners:

1st Prize Gordy Spafford and Ken Hulgren

2nd Ed Richtmyer, Lou Tasior and Jim Hatfield

Just for the record 24 orange balls were given out and only 6 were returned.

Don’t forget to mark the calendar for next year’s Men’s Odd Ball New Year’s Day Tournament.

Happy New Year!

New Year’s Eve Celebration By Ron & Nancy Short #44

Once again, a fantastic, fun filled evening of dancing, drinking, socializing and eating was had by all.

Last year we had 67 guests in attendance and this year 100 guests. The band BOOMERS was beyond

any doubt one of the best bands that I ever hired over my four years as Recreation Chairman.

A big thank you goes out to our good friends John and Rose West (108) who helped Nancy organize and

pick up the food at Costco (they have a membership card) Also a big thank you to our helpers who assisted in

decorating the hall and setting up the tables and especially Manfred & Debbie Grasser’s (178) two daughters

and husbands (I think) who were our balloon blowers (thanks guys). Also, a big thank you to Cindy Hubbard

(114) Nadine Templeton (105) and Rose West (108) who were kind enough to assist Nancy Short (44) in

putting out all the food. There was a fair amount of food left over and it was given out on Wednesday after

Coffee on a first come basis (went fast).

A big “THANK YOU” to our two Sponsors – DOMINO’S PIZZA (Pinehurst) and to D-TOWN

RESTAURANT (Main Street) and to all the people who attended. You certainly helped to make this New

Year’s Eve Dance one of the best. Till our next one-

Living Life to the Fullest By Kurt Novakowski #177

Larry Berube #85 and I took time out from our coach renovations to enjoy the spectacular views at Red Rock

Canyon and the magnificent Valley of Fire outside of Las Vegas.

I am surprised the Valley of Fire is not advertised right up there with the Grand Canyon as a top destination.

Our New Zealand & Australia Trip By Gerald & Eleanor Saunders #76

Our New Zealand and Australia trip was one that I certainly won't forget. We spent 24 days discovering

the North and South Islands of New Zealand and 12 days on the east coast of Australia. Pictures were taken in

the Fiordland National Park and sailing in Milford Sound - both on the South Island of NZ. As part of the

'Secret Big Spin' bicycle tour in Sydney we had to jump off the Sydney Harbour Bridge. I tried desperately to

catch Gerald. What fun!!!!

The Paddle Club By Gil Callingham #159

Happy New Year

The 2019 winter session started with a cruise to Pop Stansell Park. We have issued a weekly plan for

club cruises. They depend of course on the weather.

Do you want to go with the club, but have not joined? Please do not hesitate to contact

Gil #159 or Lorne #136 and we will send you the information about our cruises, rentals, and the club. We

present our club information at our Wednesday Morning Coffee Hour and our plans are posted on the bulletin

board in the clubhouse. This is a fun club, all you need is a desire to learn. Come out and get those paddles wet.

Can/AM By Lorne & Cheryl Taylor #136

Can/Am is a celebration of the special relationship we share as countries and friends in Golden Acres.

On Thursday, February 28th, dinner and entertainment are on the docket for a fun filled evening. Once again,

we will enjoy a ham dinner with all the trimmings. Hostesses will invite ten guests to their table and organize a

cold plate meal including appetizers, salads, dessert etc. Ham will be provided by the Recreation Committee

and baked in the clubhouse.

Following dinner, you will be entertained with skits, songs, and dances by individuals and groups that

will be sure to surprise and entertain you. We know that there is a lot of talent in this community and this is

your chance to show case it. If you wish to participate, please contact the Taylors at #136 for details about the

show. It will be great!

The format for the evening is: 5:30 to 6:00 – Social time; 6:00 Dinner; 7:30 Showtime.

Tickets are $5.00 each and will be on sale by the table hostesses. Should you need a seat at a table, please let

Cheryl know. Look forward to seeing you there!
